(161 Edition) Woah this is fantastic. Super autolytic, oxidative, and toasty nose. Aromas of dark salted caramel, brown butter, toasted caraway, rye bread.
Palate is gentle and soft/round. Creamy mouthfeel and gentle effervescence. It’s super broad on the palate and it grows and grows. Massive finish and fantastic complexity.

kɹʌɡ wɪθ dʌɡ (Chicago, IL): Honestly, given its age, I had really high expectations for this so I was pretty disappointed in how it was showing. That said, Krug is Krug and in general, that's a very, very high watermark. But this bottle failed to impress. It was soft and in some sense a bit shapeless. Gentle fruit, but maybe more subtle and less cut and weight than I want in Krug. More on the white side as far as fruit profile goes, and slightly amorphous. All that said, it still tastes like Krug, and pretty delicious.

Base 2005. Very marked nose of hazelnut and fine oxidation. Winey and sunny palate, very serene, which unfolds its score on a creamy touch, aromas of almonds and hazelnuts, beautifully toasted, the juice is warm but stretches thanks to a beautiful integrated acidity. Sensation of fullness and optimal maturity. Great finish which alternates between spices and pear.

Krug masterclass with Manuel Reman, President Krug (Pall Mall 67 SG): From Jeroboam, surprisingly youthful, oldest amongst the wines but easily one of the freshest. Krug tasting at 67PM: From jeroboam. This blew me away with its explosive nose out of the gates. So powerful but retained tension and freshness. Don’t have much experience with old Krug but this ticked all the boxes. Supremely balanced, with the intensity, richness and power dialled up to 100. Supremely youthful.

Guys Night - Something Special! (Jason's House): Very nice older Champagne....this wine aged effortlessly! Nose shows classic straw and sea shell, with slate and hints of unripe stone fruit. Palate is very lively, with plenty of acidity, slate and some stone fruit and tropical fruit, with hints of marzipan and chalk. A nice Champagne that may be slightly past its prime, but still drinking well. 93 points for my palate.

Dinner at Darren & Sophia's (Fifth Avenue): Built around the 2005 vintage and bottled in 2012, this was showing beautifully on the night. I loved the nose on this, with its lovely warm aromas of toast and toffee, cereal and sweet red apples, all garlanded with a ream of browned butter and a gentle sprinkle of nutmeg and cinnamon spice. Lovely. The palate showed a good bit of Pinot Noir on it, with a round, powerful feel to its rich flavours of red apples and cherry flesh, these seasoned with a bit of spice and a hint of those browned butter notes pick up on the nose. On the midpalate, a more lemony acid steak, and a nice creamy mousse emerged, carrying the wine into a lovely long finish that wed cherry flesh notes with a beautiful warm wash of spice. A full, generous Grande Cuvée, this was really enjoyable indeed.

Medium straw colored (like a mid-aged white burg) and an ample very fine bead; quite floral but a tad pungent on 1st nosing, loads of apple and spices emerge as it warms and softens a bit. Gains complexity with some hints of smoke and almond paste. A mild gingery undertone, RICH. Serious complexity here. Krug cellared it for 7 years, I did for an additional 6. Worth the wait. In an ideal place now, but if you enjoy slightly oxidative older Champagnes, this isn't to that point yet. 94+

From what I have ready, this is mostly from the 2005 vintage. Absolutely top notch quality with a very assertive, rich nose of almond patisserie, baked apple, nutmeg, butterscotch and smoky minerals. The palate starts off with bright acidity but adds weight and power with just a bit of air time and warming up in the glass. Lots of layers, generous Krug style and good punch to the aromas and flavors in the hallmark fashion. I guessed this as a 2002 vintage.

Dinner at Osteria Langhe (Chicago, IL): What a treat to try this wine. As far as the Grande Cuvees go, I think this is a bit weaker than some of the other editions. It's not as intense and insistent on the nose, with a slightly more diffuse character than the more-focussed 160eme, 164eme, or 166eme (don't recall having the others yet). End of the day, Krug is Krug, but I think that there are better editions out there.

Krug Lunch with all Grand Cuvees (Krug Champagne Maison): GC Edition 161eme Vintage base is 2005. For me the “weakest” GC, maybe because I’m not a big fan of that year. Drinking in a great spot. Yeasty and energetic, acidity isn't wild, just great fruit and balance with teenage exuberance.

Mostly Northern Rhone Dinner with Sir Charles (Sole Ristorante Italianom, San Mateo): 2005 base; beautiful, crisp fruit, turns mineral, with hints of peach pit, lively with tons of energy and verve. Outstanding.

Krug Tasting with Olivier Krug (Knightsbridge - Northbrook IL): From magnum. The cuvee with 2005 as the youngest vintage, while also making up the plurality of the Cuvée. Rich and nicely mature. Good weight. Shorter than either 162eme or 163eme, and slightly less elegant.
