  • Excellent fruit, saline and olive notes. Darker and softer than the 2017 we just tried.

  • Burlotto Barolo Monvigliero 2013.
    Strøken parfymert nese.
Skikkelig digg, men bra stram i maska fortsatt.

  • The '13 Monvigliero was super enjoyable, but a bit disappointing relative to expectations. From this 3L bottle with good provenance, it is unclear how the wine will respond to further aging, as we found it surprisingly light on the palate relative to this wine in the best more recent vintages like 2016 or 2019. To be clear, I don't see any signs it will degrade with another 5-10+ years of age, but it's not immediately obvious from what is in the glass that it will get better. Served next to the 2014, the '13 was a bit darker and more complex, but most preferred the '14 for its brightness and energy, and the '14 showed a similar level of concentration and structure as the '13, which was really surprising. Next to a Bartolo Mascarello 2013, the Burlotto seemed almost diluted in comparison.

The nose was intensely perfumed, with signature Burlotto Monvigliero aromatics of dark strawberry fruit, orange peel, candied red roses, and menthol, with a touch of olive and earth notes peaking out from time to time. Compared to the '14, the fruit tones were similar, but a bit darker. On the palate, I found a pure red fruit and floral expression, with red strawberry fruit, red floral tones, and mint. The wine was medium in acidity and medium to light in body, with virtually no perception of tannin. The wine lacked the concentration and structure of the best 2013s, and came across to us as a bit lighter than the recent good vintages like 2016 and 2019.

The 3L was sourced from Rare Wine Company, served alongside the 2014 as a comparison (from 750ml). We opened the wine and decanted into two magnum decanters in the afternoon, which were left in the cellar until dinner. The '13 did not really show any meaningful development with air, with the expression consistent from initial opening in the afternoon through the end of the night.

I think I will try to taste a bottle of the '13 from 750ml soon. The 3L is a fun, but odd format. I'm not sure about Burlotto, but I know that many producers bottle 3Ls by hand, resulting in possible inconsistency.

  • 2023 Barolothon; 11/3/2023-11/10/2023: Tasted from a 3L over a few hours. Agree with Rob's detailed tasting. This had all the typical notes I expect from the Monvigliero: strawberries, mint tea leaves, and tobacco, but overall, this was a little disappointing relative to '13 expectations. This seemed to close down more and more with air. Very, very smooth, but way too simple. Wanted more depth from this. I hope to pop open a 750ml in the near future to see if there is a big difference. 94

  • Drank over 3 days. Initially sweet red fruit, olive and firm tannin but pleasant. The tannin and olive came to dominate over the next two days.

  • Wow, a total baby with loads of candied red cherry and strawberry. It has that olive and stem spice but perhaps just a bit subdued and shielded by the fruit at this early stage. Best 2030+. A taste on night two was hard as nails. A glass on night three was texturally thrilling - totally Burgundian.

  • Nebbiolos, white truffles, Volume VII (Chicago, IL): This is probably a great wine in two decades, but it's definitely not there today. Distinctly candied with lots of sweet red fruit; almost exuberantly so. Lots of confected notes and behind it of course is the lovely stemmy perfume of Monvigliero. Intense and ripe, I wonder if they pushed the fruit a little too hard (which is kind of strange because the 2015 has never struck me that way, and I'd think that the vintage was even riper). 100 points though? An open faced sandwich heaped tall with Galloni baloney.

  • Very very reticent. Even after a few hours in the decanter and over an extended evening of drinking. Started to try and open at the very end, but not enough. After a night of drinking, everyone seemed to appreciate its freshness and general weightlessness, but very closed in terms of its fruit and flavor expression.

  • Opened ..left opened for a few hours as the first taste was more tannins then fruit. What a change. Beautiful nose of roses and raspberry, excellent red fruit flavours, great length, tar, liquorice and leather notes with a good tannic spine leaving a dryness on the back of the palate. Drinkable now but will age well. Excellent

  • BYO Centropa (Centropa, Oslo, Norway): Middels dyp, funklende klar burgunderrød. Bravo!

  • Burlotto Barolo Tasting + X (Freiheit Vinothek, Ulm, Germany): Almost en par with the 2013 Cannubi, just a bit less depth. Beautiful clear fruit, floral, amazing tannin. 93-94+

  • A private dinner (Caffè Toscanini, Amsterdam, NL): A second bottle, after a slightly off one. Explosive aromatics, strawberries and roses, light and creamy and supple, bright and firm, elegant and relaxed, so flowing and refined, so easy, so supple and juicy, effortless tannins, excellent length. Star quality.

  • A private dinner (Caffè Toscanini, Amsterdam, NL): Not completely clean. Not massively corked, but there is an edge, something muffled, which mars the aromatic expression.

  • 3 hours in Decanter. Like previous bottles, this has a lovely feminine expressive way to charm you with this delicate lighter red berry fruit with cool strawberries, wild strawberries, the most beautiful roses, greener herbs, forest, light stone, against graphite and this more earthy touch in the background.

Medium-bodied wine with a fresh and delicate mouthfeel with this wonderful fruit character of wild strawberries, leather, a hint of tar, a slightly cinnamon-like tone, herb garden and wonderful salt minerals. This is pure silk. Long finish with tannins that are so balanced that it brings tears to the eyes. This is the outermost reference from the Monvigliero vineyard. Of course, there is more to wait for, but silk is great regardless of age and development. 95 points. For now.

  • Drinking my second bottle of half a case. Opened for 2.5 hours. Color is classic Barolo , light brick red and a hint of orange on the rim. The nose: Pure fresh Strawberry, rose, cherry and some forest floor. The nose is just magnificent. On the palate: Strawberry, cherry , rose and violets, forest floor, some tar and still quite tannic. Mouthfeel is luxurious silk. This wine exudes class and elegance. It’s what I love in a good Barolo. It deserves to be drunk in great company, on Lake Como under the stars. This is top stuff.

  • I don't know what the going rate is for this wine, but it's probably worth it. Extremely fragrant with a palate this is still open-knit, complex, and expressive. Youthful and wild and complex but still impeccably balanced. Hard to recall a more impressive young Barolo.

  • Getting the Band Back Together (Ciao Bella, Mpls): Very pretty medium translucent maroonish red color. Same bottle as Chablis28; decanted 4 hours; drank a glass plus over an hour plus. This had an absolutely killer nose. Dried cedarbox, savory herbs, bright roses, balsamic strawberries, red fruits, sweet cigar, cinnamon, airy spicebox, tobacco leaf, wow, wow, wow. The palate shows cherry, dried wood, balsamic strawberries, dried fruits, with some darker fruit, cigar and polished fine grained tannins that are rather approachable for the youth. Great stuff, hope to have this again in a few more years. Thanks to Craig for this one. 95-96pts with some upside if the palate catches the nose.

  • Opened and decanted 4 hours prior to leaving for Ciao Bella tonight. Back in the btl just prior to leaving. Removed cork again at venue just before drinking to keep it cool while seated on Ciao Bella's outstanding shaded garden patio. Semi translucent bright red without any telltale Nebbiolo bricking yet. Right now, this is most striking for 3 things; a profound perfume and its weightless purity & intensity. The fruit is vineyard fresh like it was picked today. The aromatics are amazing, even sitting outside. I love the youthfully vibrant wild berry supported by minerality, spice, herbs and other more subtle harmonics. The nose is packed with rose petal, berries and pungent overtones. This is a highly refined wine perhaps only toped by the best examples from G Rinaldi. Tons of upside but super intriguing right now too with lots of air. The tannins were much more pronounced on opening. Sadly, this cuvee has lost nearly any semblance of value and I had to stop buying it with this vintage. Paid $58. The very next vintage I was offered from my same store was around $150. Which made buying it a maybe at best.

  • Gorgeous, perfumed nose is classic Monvigliero but ratcheted up to eleven, with wild strawberry, rose, black olive, and stemmy spice. Soft, regal tannins and soaring, ripe acidity frame large-scale strawberry and earth flavors. Such elegance. Likely entering its shutdown phase so if you haven't enjoyed a bottle yet ... see you in a decade.

  • Dinner with Roger and Vivian (SF): Olive tapenade on the nose, red cherry, roses; palate is light bodied, approachable tannins, red cherry, fruit persists through the midpalate; finish is medium length and a bit shorter than I expected. A very nice elegant wine, classically made, but doesn’t strike me with its intensity as much as its balance. 92

  • Easily the lightest and more delicately colored Barolo I’ve had. Texturally it’s also delicate but also packed with structure and acid. Fresh strawberry and pine sing on the nose. The palate remains tart and in need of 10 plus years. Still some light red fruit and minerals come through.

  • Incredible. The nose is one of the best I have ever had in a Barolo, tons of wild strawberries and cherries. Palate is of fantastic structure, lots of cherries, a bit tar and still young tannins.

  • Magnificent . I bought on a recent trip to Italy . While young it is already drinking well but with some age I imagine it will get even better. strawberry and cherry with violets , mushroom and tar. Luxurious mouthfeel. Just a brilliant wine.

  • Hugely complex. Simultaneously savoury and sweet on the nose, with pepper and liquorice but also red cherries and violets. It is approachable now but I can't help but thing that the best is very much still to come.

  • Nahe^3: 10 vintages of Halenberg, Hermannshöhle and Felseneck + X (@Private location, Frankfurt): *** brief note from an extensive tasting ***
    Glass: Gabriel Gold
Decanted about 30min before. Clear, medium, glowing ruby-garnet color. Clean, medium intense and youthful nose with lots of wild strawberries, some floral notes and some fresh roses. Round, soft and nice, but still lacks the complexity of great, ripe Barolo.
On the palate it has everything a great Barolo needs: High, ripe and well-integrated acidity, medium+ ripe, not fully integrated tannin. Very elegant and round, beautiful texture. Lots of wild strawberries, only a hint of oak, some herbs and extract sweetness. Drinks nicely now, very approachable. But for me still far away from the deep complexity of great Baroli. But it has all it takes. Will try my first bottle in about 10+ years time 92-93++

  • Brought to restaurant for a pop and pour, so no formal note taken. I generally bury my young Barolo and don't touch them, but after a friend kept saying how well this was drinking I decided to open one with him to check in. Having just had a 2010 Barolo from another producer the night prior, I was skeptical, but... he was absolutely correct. This thing was gorgeous! It was an example of singing elegance. The wine smelled like the most delectable strawberry compote you've ever had. It was gorgeous, lifted and elegant. This profile carried onto the palate which was wonderfully textured on a medium frame, but had incredible structural integration, showing killer acid and tannins, and a kind of bloom that is rarely encountered in young Barolo. Indeed, this feels fully integrated. All these elements carried into a long, detailed, expansive finish that was spectacular. Indeed, this is drinking at an incredible access point. I am unsure if this will shut down as many Barolos do, but it's so classy and integrated right now that it may stay that way for a bit of time. I think I'll need to check into some other recent vintages of Monvigliero to see how they're doing. It was fun drinking this after the 1958 Cappellano earlier in the evening, which for me, scores identically, but as you can imagine, for radically different reasons. Great to see this level of polish in a young wine as well, though!

  • Strawberry pie. and a little jam. But light bodied with enough structure to provide a nice offset. Disagreement at the table on the structure. I thought the structure was quite interesting... a delicate/elegant wine paired with fine tannins that were deceptively present and there on the finish. Not worth the points-chasing retail price on this, but I am glad to have 2 more in the cellar to try again many years down the road.

  • Dinner at Hotel Castel; 9/21/2018-9/22/2018 (Hotel Castel, Dorf Tirol, Alto Adige, Italy): I let the wine open two hours before dinner and give it a certain amount of air in the decanter. This Monvigliero was open for business then. Like some tasters already mentioned it is a very burgundian styled Barolo. Lots of red fruit like strawberry, a bit of raspberry and also red currant mixed with cinnamon, underbrush, rose petals and other floral components on the multi layered nose. Very fresh on the palate. The tannins are super polished and already very well integrated. Sometimes younger Barolos can be a bit harsh on the tannins but this one not. Elegant, balanced palate with a long finish. This is really serious Nebbiolo with a lot of potential left to go a long way. Can´t see the 100 points from Galloni here though.

  • Color is pale ruby to the rim. Nose explodes with strawberry, raspberry, olives, and white pepper. On the palate, this is surprisingly drinkable now - red fruits, subtle core, and nice balancing acidity with a nice tannic bite at the end. Beautiful and high-toned now, I will be interested to taste it again in years to come. A very elegant and lifted Barolo.

  • Really nice wine and quite drinkable, already now. The tannins are not disturbing in any way. Burgundian in style, light and elegant. Improved with air, of course.
Will probably be even better in 10 years.

  • soaring nose of freshly picked strawberry at the perfect ripeness. It was crazy how fresh and vibrant the strawberry is on the nose. Mixed in with the right touch of peppery stem. Delicate but persistent. Bed Bath and Beyond could put this into a bubbly hand soap and I’d go buy 3 get 1 free sale all day. Easily one of the best wines I’ve smelled in awhile. The palate shows that same light airiness, sweet cherry and olive, far more though. Has a light extract and elegance but needs far more time to really unfurl (not tannic or obstructive just light bodied). Thanks for this gorgeous wine @pavlovich.robert,

  • Classic strawberry and stems on the nose, per this vineyard and producer. Very much the same on the palate, medium light frame with good extract and freshness. Shows plus tannin and length on the finish. All this needs is time for the stems to integrate and it's going to be another classic Monvigliero. Tasted along with the 13' Bartolo Mascarello, this was the prettier, more feminine expression of the two. Will be fun to follow both of these beauties over time.

  • Piemonte BYOB, wine #12: light transparent color. Amazingly pure fruit with bright red berries, licorice, wild strawberries, juicy. Velvety mouthfeel with beautiful clear fruit, huge drinkability and accessible already. But knowing the producer, this one should be laid to rest minimum 5 years to discover its true magic.

  • OK, I don’t get the hype, and I’m reduced to searching for nice things to say about this wine. The nose is exceptional. It’s perfumed, feminine, and with plenty of detail. The texture... there isn’t any. If you told me it was a Nebbiolo d’Alba I’d believe it. It has a touch of ‘13 warmth, but not much else. Huh.

  • 2018 Festa del Barolo AM Seminar

Olive tapenade, stemmy nose with cherry and strawberry fruit, and lovely "herbals" and florals. This is a wine of harmonious contrasts: it's elegant and mid weighted, yet an incredibly deep wine. Sappy and with terrific density yet it remains lithe. Subtle and understated yet with layers of complexity and simultaneous lift. Weightless power. Singular wine. 97

  • 2013 Barolo: Sublime Finesse & Elegance Tasting, La Festa del Barolo (Del Posto Restaurant, NYC): [100% whole cluster.] Heavenly nose. Expansive and harmonious. A beautiful fragrant evocative wine.

  • La Festa del Barolo Master Class Tasting (Del Posto): The nose showed the classic Burlotto Monvigliero bouquet with black olive tapenade, roses, violets, crushed cherry and minerals. On the palate, I found soft textures with pure strawberry fruits, inner florals and life-giving acidity. The finish was medium-long with lingering cherry, minerals and olive-tinged inner florals.

This wine receiving 100 points from one of the major critics is the worst thing that could have ever happened to it. In my opinion, it's a very unique wine that will only be appreciated by those who love it for being an outlier, a singular expression unlike most others. Years from now people will taste this 100-point wine and scratch their heads over it, while those who would have appreciated it, have been shut out by the massive increase in price. It's very sad.

  • Beautiful wine that is just too hard to rate at this young stage. You can tell there is plenty to love here, but I am not sure I taste "100 points". With that said, the wine is something really special though - as it is in every vintage. The nose is just full of roses and olive tapenade. This will need some time to unfurl, but it will surely blossom to be a beauty. One thing I noticed was how much more reserved this wine was in comparison to previous vintages as this same stage.

  • Italy Vacation Part 2; 10/29/2017-11/5/2017 (Bologna, Parma, Modena and Roma): Youthful light ruby; aromatic, deep red fruits, spice, cinnamon, some roses, deep but also elegant; palate is light bodied, high tannins, youthful, high acid, plenty of red fruit, difficult to assess at this point; medium-long finish. Well balanced but not the most complex at this point. Will be interested to see how this develops with air. 92
1 hour air: not much different. Nose and palate are still well balanced but still reticent.
At 1.5 hours, this shut down. Can't get much out of this now. Overall probably too young to judge, but I was expecting more for this wine and my first exposure to Burlotto.

  • I was super thrilled to taste this even after I haven't had my big moment with the Burlotto wines yet. I think they are very good Barolos but from my perspective always lacked a little to be in the top group.
This is super interesting to taste. Incredible silkiness, superb mouthfeel, Burgundian in texture but I am missing all the aromatics at the moment. Also the whole-cluster fermentation is for me personally more distracting than adding much... I would give this a 98 for texture, tannins and mouthfeel and a 90 for aromatics...

  • Given all the hype surrounding this vintage of this wine I thought I should Pobega a bottle … and I was not disappointed. All class, this is potentially an outstanding Cru this year. Light, pale, translucent claret colour. Red cherry and red berry perfumes with touches of blueberries, rose florals and mixed spices. A sweet seeming entry but it’s bone dry. It’s packed full of ripe and rich red cherries, strawberries and other red fruit with cinnamon and other spices and hints of iron minerality. Ultra-fine grained, spherical tannins, with the precise, racy acids well balanced by the fruit. The stem component, at least at this time, well integrated and aligned. Clean and very pure. Satiny mouthfeel but with real volume and serious structure. Drinking beautifully over the two days, it really should be cellared for 5-8+ years, of course.

  • Decanted, then drunk over two hours. Powerful, dense, and very ripe, this is fully of sweet red cherries and blue fruits. There's so much fruit that the signature whole-cluster influence of this wine, while present, is very much in the background, presenting here as woodsy olive and sage notes. The tannins are rich and refined and there's a lot of acid, making for an elegant structural frame, but this is still a big, concentrated wine that's showing a little monolithic and primary at this point.

This is a lovely young Barolo, but I don't think it quite justifies some of the rapturous critical hype. And the resulting price increases are a damn shame.

  • Burlotto Barolo Monvigliero 2013.

  • Usedvanlig lys rød bærfrukt, sitrus-gulaktig i kantene. For noe herlige toner...

96 poeng.

  • with Fabio

Cherry fruit, roses, and stems. Olive tapenade, but it blends in with the rose and perfume more than usual in this vintage. It's hugely perfumed, heavenly really. Elegant and weightless, yet intense. Pure and deep. The stems leave an herbal, almost basil like lift to it. Like drinking water, it's effortlessly beautiful. Fine tannins on the back end. Precise, fine brush strokes. Incredibly long. Fantastic.

  • This is unmistakably Monvigliero. The nose displayed black olive, savory herbs, exotic florals, crushed strawberry, and Indian spice. On the palate, I found soft textures with pure red berry fruit, inner florals and a balanced mix of fine-grained tannins and brisk acidity. It was lifted, pure and classically structured throughout. The finish was long of dried cherry, strawberry and floral tones.

  • 2016 Villa d’Este Wine Symposium - Kelly, Alan and Kevin's excellent adventure; 11/3/2016-11/12/2016 (Villa D’este, Lake Como, Piedmont, Milan and Frankfurt): Refined and very detailed nose displaying decadent sweet red fruit, rose, lavender, iron, caramel, anise and sweet spices. Powerful and structured. This seems to be more structured to age. I like the 12 and 13 equally, prefer this for the impressive scale but prefer the 12 for the sensual texture.
