Fabulous All Sauternes Tasting Dinner: Part Trois (Brad's Place, St. Paul, MN): Medium amber color. Drank a glass over an hour plus. Unripe melon, dried prange peels, Mandarin orange, deep and intense, layers of tart citrus and pineapple, toasty caramelized sugar, abundant spices, creamy pleasing texture. Much more vibrant than the '83 Rieussec next to it. Very nice. 93+ to 94pts.

Popped and poured. A large well structured and well balanced wine with a tree like sap suggesting this is still young. On day 1 this is a 92. Day 2- poured a 4 ounce glass 3 hours in advance and wow. Perfect harmony, viscosity way down, balance improved and drinking in or near peak. This should drink well for a few more decades and requires a lot of air at this point.

Last tasted 6/19 from a split; this from a 750ml bottle.
Color/App: deep, old gold, verging toward amber in bottle but still deep gold in glass; high viscosity. Large-scaled, faintly Germanic bouquet of caramel, barley sugar, honey, apricots and saffron. Still showing a nice, sweet palate with creme brulee, toffee, peaches and apricots, apricots, apricots. Wow; simply perfect acidity and a towering, sweet, super-long finish. Lafaurie knocks it out of the park in '86. I'd say this easily has another 5-10 years with well stored bottles, but there is certainly no reason to wait.
Amber. Delicious! Marmalade, hints of caramel, great acidity. Dried apricot. Long finish, multi layered, complex. Drink now but still going strong, will last for many years yet.
Tasted blind from half bottle. A really nice amber color with plenty of sugar having visibly crystallized. Burned sugar, saffron, candid berry fruit, a bit of smoke and a fresh herbal layer to shake things up. Perfect creaminess on the palate with ideal acidity. This is a beautifully aged Lafaurie-Peyraguey and was a joy to taste.
Friday Night Brown Bagger (J&J's): Double blind, from half bottle, showing a light golden color and a slightly off nose- something a little musty at first, turning to a funky ripe cheese aroma. Strange. Much better on the palate though, with pear liqueur, marmalade and apricot flavors.

From 375ml and not suffering at all coming from a split.
Color: mid/deep gold core with crazy long, viscous legs. Huge bouquet of caramel, barley sugar, honey, peach, butter and a pinch of lime zest. Still quite the sweet palate showing creme brulee, toffee, peach/nectarine and white flowers. Perfect acidity and with a towering, sweet finish, this is punching well above it's price and weight class (Lafaurie was pretty forgettable & inexpensive in the 20+ years prior to the '83).
I think this reinforces the quality of the top echelon of the '86 Sauternes. Too many wrote off the vintage as light and/or early developing. With the exception of a few wines (Suduiraut come to mind), most of the 86's have aged tremendously well and show they have the sweetness and botrytis and stuffing to last many, many more years. Glad I have quite a few to enjoy over the next 10-20 years. If I had more room in the cellar I'd be searching for these at auction -- especially considering they're not much more expensive than the current vintages being released !

Vinetasters: Pessac-Léognan (Skokie, IL): Served double blind, but obviously Sauternes. It could have been Barsac thanks to the fresh acidity here. Light, with a very pleasant demeanor, even if this doesn't have the most gravitas. Good freshness, and given the relatively lower amounts of botrytis, I guessed this to be a 1996 instead.

Beautiful fresh Seville orange marmalade but otherwise a little too uncomplicated to merit a higher score. Perhaps a touch of almond, a touch of spun sugar. I like the 86s a lot and this is a nice example of the mediation between sweet and acid that is the ultimate marker of success for the vintage.

Caramel Popcorn, butter, salt, button mushroom, baked apple, raison, orange, flowers, lime-blossom honey. Rich and thick with just the right amount of acid. At 32 years old, still drinking perfectly fine. Very intense, yet pretty. The oaky flavors distinguish this from the Baumard Quarts de Chaume from a few weeks ago (made without oak). I liked the caramel and butter, but I can’t say that this wine was better than the Quarts de Chaume, with its perfect purity of fruit. In fact, I might choose the Quarts de Chaume over this one if I had to pick. Neverthless, I liked them both.

Mill Pond Weekend; 6/9/2017-6/10/2017: Wow, I was expecting this to be good, but this bottle was exceptional. The cork and wine were in pristine condition and the wine was effortlessly young and alive. Gorgeous orange color. Intoxicating nose of honey, peach nectar, graham cracker, ginger, sweet floral perfume, lavender. Rich but so bright, the balance was excellent. Candied orange, peach nectar, guava, lime, the fruit is blended expertly with floral, white tea, honey, graham cracker, almond and minerals. This was a birth-year wine for my brother and sister and they were both blown away by it. Unanimously the wine of the weekend.

Wineberserkers dinner with Herwig (Heirloom cafe): Just a wonderful nose with honey, spice, wonderful balance, highly aromatic and complex; palate is full bodied but just a unique wonderful balance of density and lightness, freshness, and elegance, medium sweetness, medium-plus acidity, wonderfully fresh, honey, citrus peel and citrus fruit; long finish. Wonderful superb sauternes at early maturity with decades ahead of it. 94-96 Day 2: This has held up very nicely with just superb elegant balance on the nose on the palate but still with a nice richness and sweetness. The overall texture and balance on this is a real strength. 94-95

From a perfect looking bottle, this wine had a deep yellow/light orange center with yellow rims. The high- intensity nose displayed sauvignon blanc brightness, honey, almond paste, and soil.
In the mouth, this wine is rich and ripe with excellent acidity and fantastic length. The balance was impeccable.
This wine is right at it peak and will easily stay there for 10 years. This is a lovely Sauternes that is ready to roll.

My third or fourth time with this now (always in 750), and I never grow tired. Each year the fruit recedes a little more leaving even more of a stony imprint. Acids are fresh, the wine is alive (of note: the color tonight was probably the darkest yet, but still only a light>medium amber gold - these bottles have been well kept). For those thinking of pairing this with some kind of traditional dessert, no sir, do not attempt. This is best with some hard cheeses, and or nuts, but a sweet dessert would be a huge mistake here. A wonderful looking glass into the past, always a treat. recommended
PnP, served non-blind; cork 100% soaked.

Caramel, orange, saffron nose. Palate shows some orange pith, lobster bisque, bitter orange oil, and a light touch of burnt sugar. Fantastic stuff, though this lost a little vibrancy after a night in the fridge so I'd say there's nothing to gain from further aging.

WineBerserkers Burgundy Dinner (Garcon, San Francisco): Orange-golden color; aromatic nose with wild honey, orange fruit, orange rind, slight saffron; palate is full bodied, intense fruit flavor with fresh orange marmalade, medium-plus to high vibrant acidity throughout the palate, medium alcohol very well integrated; medium finish. This is an exceptionally well drinking sauternes: full bodied and full of fruit while also fresh and possessing vibrant acidity throughout with good complexity throughout. Excellent sauternes, drinking well now and for at least 5-10 years, though no reason to wait... this is at peak. 93.

G-P-L Vertical (82',90',96',98',00',03',05') Evening: This was an add on to the already splendid evening of drinking fantastic bordeaux all night long. The color was dark gold, with a nose of butterscotch, heavy pears, vanilla, and, as a more venerable wine taster accurately described, orange creamsicle. The palate added a slight mineral element, with edgy acidity to keep the sweetness in balance. A very long finish meant you could sip this for quite a while and enjoy the wonderful nose without draining your glass too fast.

This wine is light gold in color at this stage. It has a fine vanillin and toasty nose. On the palate, it is adequately sweet as a dessert wine, showing notes of apricot, toast and honey. The level of botrytis is moderate with balanced acidity to make this a wonderfully charming wine. This wine will significantly improve with five or more years. It has not turned around to the light amber taste which is the sweet spot for a great Sauternes like this wine. I am scoring it 91 at this stage but this wine will add points in time.

From .375ml. Dark gold in color, much darker than the 1975 La Tour Blanc drunk side-by-side. Apricots, crème brulee top, orange blossoms, some peach on the palate. Not in decline at all or barely so, will still drink very well for at least 7-10 more years.

Amber -1 color. Juicy aromas, of vanilla, honey, orange, peach, caramel. Arrives creamy and big in the mouth, texturally ideal for this house. Develops flavor of orange, peach and vanilla heaped in hot caramel. Very fruity but not over-sweet. In great condition. Finishes very full bodied, ripe and rich. Release price $18.99. All-sauternes dinner (Jardiniere, SF): Wild honey; big body, good weight and sweetness, orange flavors, balanced but very full bodied with ripe expressive fruit; fabulous medium-length finish. This was probably the only representative of the "full bodied/riper" style of sauternes at this dinner, and it was excellent. It was fabulous with the fish. This wine could also use 5-10 years. 92-93

Michael Whitehead Bon Voyage PDH Intense golden in color. Ready to go on opening. Bright nose of apricots and stone pit spice, creamy and rich on the palate. Medium bodied, intense note of spice and burnt orange peel on the midpalate and a soft, creamy vanilla/creme brulee finish. Very nice.

From a .375ml bottle. Medium gold in color. The flavors were amazing, burnt caramel with apricots with a touch of lanolin. The wine is showing a good bit of acidity that I've found evident in this vintage, but it gives it more of a backbone than a flaw. There's plenty of life left in this wine, even in these half bottles. Paired very well with the flan and sauteed plantains served for dessert.

Saturday Night at Ian's (Ian's House): This had a beautiful medium-gold color and turned out to be quite nice. The nose had nice lanolin, apricot and baked pear. I got a bit of a metallic tone on this that was a bit off-putting, but it wasn't aggressive. The palate was better than the nose and was rich, dense and classic Semillon. I liked the toasted vanilla bean a lot. Not really sure this can age much longer.

A stunner. Developed over a two hour period, being served with Foie and again with dessert. Showed Yquem like almondy volatile acidity, a bit of petrol, clean and clear pineapple flavors tinged with vanilla and spice. Perhaps a bit flat on the finish, but just a stellar bottle.

A crazy good bottle (Denver does Bordeaux at Mitch) First of 3 recently acquired from private collection. Color pale and very young, condition pristine. This was a delicate drink but very complex and the balance between sweetness & acid just right. Some notes of banana & passion fruit clove & spice. What made this particularly enjoyable was he lightness & delicacy yet there was great tension and structure. A harmonious drinker from start to finish. Based on this bottle this has a nice long life ahead of itself.

This was an unusual Lafaurie-- very different from the '83, '88, and '01 that we've had recently. Deep gold, with a hint of amber. It smelled more like Cognac than Sauternes at first, with quite a bit of heat. After an hour of air, it revealed rich notes of hazelnut, caramel, and botrytis. On the palate, it's sticky sweet with caramel, a big dollop of toasty oak, and bitter orange peel. Good acidity and a long finish are saving graces here, but my overall impression is in the neighborhood of a B-.
I'm not sure if it's because we drank this from a 375 or if it's the vintage, but I really prefer the bright pineapple-orange fruit that's more typical from this Chateau.

What made this particularly enjoyable was he lightness & delicacy yet there was great tension and structure. A harmonious drinker from start to finish.
