The stalwart delivers (from a 375 ml half bottle). Good purple/red core with rim fading to crimson.
Hard to say whether I like the nose or the palate more. Both impress, given the modest price tag.
Dry spice, pepper and char mingle with (Grenache) raspberry, strawberry hovering in the background. Composed.
A similarly dry, savoury palate. Touch of liquorice to the above characters. Not only avoids the porty excess of some (many?) CdRs but better still exhibits fine tannins and good line - especially for the price, back in the day (it seems Guigal have cottoned on to ‘international pricing’ and adjusted upwards, alas). Drinking agreeably well now but a few extra years wouldn’t hurt.
Ever since tasting a 1997 Jaboulet Parallele 45 CdR with 20 odd years or so age, I’ve been on the hunt for a good value CdR to buy in bulk and consign most to the cellar. This would have been a reasonable candidate. Me thinks the 2015 even more so. A good Komrade bought a stash of the 15s. I must remind him of what a good deserving pal I am.

Much respect for this budget bottle. From magnum, given a couple hours of air in the bottle. Just med intensity but nice cool red cherry & dried black fruit tones beneath some earth & woodsy herb. Palate isn't as giving or "fun" as some CdR might be expected to be, but has good structure and spice/earth tones. I like it. Easy, works on its own, better with food.

First of a new case. Needs air; it's takes a while to open out. Youthful dark purple red. Fresh nose of violets, metallic tin, geranium leaves. Tannins softening, medium-full body, blueberry/cranberry fruit. As ever a benchmark for Southern Rhone wines with a good QPR.

Not a fan necessarily. Light dry flavor without much noticeable fruit or berry. Would not get this again, not because it's not good, it's just not our thing. It's dry and doesn't have the fruit and jamminess that we like.

Not much to add to the excellent TN below this one dated April 28th, except that with a cellar like mine you might follow my plan to drink up until the end of 2025, and that I would opt for an 89, especially having directly compared with the 2015 and having given that one a 90.

Certainly not at the level of the superb 2015 & 2016 but another good CDR from Guigal. Opaque ruby in the glass. Earthy red and black fruits waft up on the nose along with toasty spice and roasted herbs. The palate is typically ripe and sumptuous displaying nicely defined fruit, crisp acidity and peppery licorice notes through the balanced and quite impressive finish. This took a little while to open up in the decanter but soon showed well. Will hold for at least another 3-5 years - Guigal classique.

Nose: quite nice, lightly perfumed, mushroom. Tasting: a little green even at 1 hour airing, tannins of unripe blackberries resulting in very dry finish. Nice body with some oak. Some meaty notes, pepper in finish. 83p

D+0h: no deposit in the filter nor in the bottle, smells of blackberry and violets D+4h: purple red colour, smells of blackberry, violets and eucalyptus with a little bit of leather in the background, smooth in the mouth, medium body, has a certain residual sugar, so not completely dry, the 14,5% alcohol are well integrated, in the mouth blackberry, violets and a little bit of eucalyptus, in the aftertaste blackberry, eucalyptus, violets and acidity, good length (30 sec), really good red wine for the price.

My second bottle of the 2017. This vintage isn’t up to the standards of the best vintages, as it is rougher, more rustic and unbalanced than the best. But it remains an outstnding QPR and remarkably consistent from year to year.

Costco for 14$. Slightly rustic with fine rough tannins but a great nose of raspberries , cherries, earth and a little mint. Excellent qpr for a CdR of this quality.

Is it possible for a wine to be both elegant and rustic at the same time? This wine says yes! There’s some really nice fruit here (I pick up cherry), but also a leathery undertone that provides a solid foundation without overwhelming the fruit. It’s a bit like a Pinot Noir with a an earthy base, if that makes any sense. Paired with a roast chicken with a hearty pan gravy, rice, and a salad made from the fat drippings from the chicken—something that I usually pair with a Pinot, but this worked perfectly. I know my score is a bit high compared to the averages, but I really enjoyed this wine. And for the price, it’s a downright bargain!

As a pop-and-pour this one took a little bit to grow on me. Dark ruby color fading to just a little garnet on the rim with watery miniscus. Nose had a barnyard note that blew off after a few minutes. Left more of a rich, almost syrupy cherry to raspberry with a little leather and funk. Hint of strawberry in there too. Mostly more of the same on the palate with medium+ body and some light well-integrated tannins. Pretty short finish, a little more cough syrupy than I'd like - maybe a longer decant will help.
Day 2 edit: a fridge decant did some good. Less cloying/cough syrup, leaving a fruit-forward wine with a little complexity and some light tannins on the finish.

Not quite as enthusiastic as I was about the bottle mentioned on November 26th last year. Still the consistently good product I enjoy so much. Botte was best on day 3, a 90 then, so it has lots of life left in it.

Consistently enjoyable wine and an great value. Dark fruit and a bit of earthiness. Ready to drink but does benefit from a 30 minute decant and continues to nicely evolve. Does not have a long finish like higher end wines. We will continue to keep in our cellar.

Drunk over 3 nights. With steak on 2, poached pheasant on the other.
A big hit of red and black fruit on the nose. Depth, and some tannin backing it all.
Better on first and third nights. Seemed a bit more angular on second. No Coravin used, wine had mellowed nicely by night 3 with smoother fruit. Fair bit of sediment.
A little more forward that I expected for a 2017, but still got a few years in it yet.
As ever, a dependable and top end CdR.

Extremely good value for money! Not a complex wine but what do you expect for under $15?! A very reliable “any day of the week” wine. Cannot really think of any other wines which are the same price that are as good! Can be had right out the bottle but benefits from 2+ hours of decanting.

Complex wine with long finish and considerable body. A blend of 50% Syrah, 40% Grenache & 10% Mourvèdre with pleasing aromas of berries and spice. On the palate flavors of blackberry and cherry with smoke and savory spice. Long finish, spicy tannins ending with earthy herbs. Great value, tasting well now. Will by again because of different nose compared to most tasted so far wines. Best at the first day.

PnP. Notes after bottle had been opened at least one hour. Ruby. Funk n fruit nose. Dark fruits, menthol, tannin. My initial impressions (from PnP to about the 40 minute mark) had been that this was a toned down 2016, but it has tightened up with air and is showing more bitterness than I recall the '16 ever displaying. Still, it showed well earlier. Judgment reserved.

90/91. This has aromas of gunflint, leather, cedar hints, blackberries, black olives+spice. Its savoury, crunchy medium bodied a bit rustic chewy freshly fruited black fruits palate has excellent depth+ ends medium longish and tapering with some drying tannin. 14.5%. Excellent value at 9E 99. Lay down 3-4 years.
I was initially disappointed with this the first time I drank it, after having enjoyed many bottles of the fantastic 2016 beforehand.
Revisiting the 2017 now, it must be said that this vintage is still a cut above many other Rhone offerings at this price point, offering a richness of fruit on the nose and palate which is rarely found at this level.

Last May I wrote: "Brilliant QPR at 9€ on sale! This is of course not a complex but rather reliable crowd pleaser wine. I missed the typical CdR heat and was a bit surprised by the sweetish finish."
Still true, though the finish didn't feel that sweet this time.

Very consistent product. This bottle and/or vintage surprises with a raspberry fruit drop note on the nose while the palate maintains the tradition of forest berries and olives with its chalkiness, graphite or even asphalt. Will follow this up with one of my five remaining bottles per year until 2025 unless the increasingly chaotic influences force me to use this up more quickly.
Cotes du Rhone (Frank's place in Matraville): From Coravin. Slightly austere, leather, wild blackberry, a little lavender and liquorice, gets more jubey with time; a little baked blackberry lozenge. Juicy, savoury, the acidity lends freshness, tannins are talc textured, persistent, fruit present but a little muted, slightly fleshy, okay.

This bottle is darker in complexion than my notes and memory of the previous bottle; fruit is closer to bramble than cherry. In a large production cuvée like Guigal's CDR, this variation could result from different bottling runs. Good nevertheless.

While there is some minimal quality variation year-to-year, this is a good value red Rhone, usually drinks best at 3-4 years as was the case with us. Light enough to pair well with fowl and other fare, but structured enough to pair well with lighter meat dishes. Would be a good turkey or ham pairing. Mostly Grenache as I understand it, not thin, but lighter and elegant.

Opened one hour in advance, dark brambly fruits on nose. Deeply coloured, very slight bricking towards the edge of the rim. Not massively complex initially but very drinkable, similar palate, slightly spicy finish with hints of leather. Nice balanced tannins and acidity. More tertiary structure on nose on the second day. Overall balanced, restrained, classy Rhone

Deep ruby with thin clearing rim, subtle green herb nose. Intense! Black fruit up front with a wave of sweetness which evokes blackberry and raisin. This gives way to an herb note from the aroma which carries into the palate, and eventually becomes spicy black pepper in the finish. Salty mineral character makes itself known, and the tannic grip and structure ties the whole thing together. Although this is intense it does not feel "tight" and should be fine to drink now.

Complejo y elegante, de final largo. Nariz: fruta roja madura, especias, te y tabaco. Boca: cereza, frambuesa, canela, salino, pimienta blanca. Es un vino que necesita tiempo para abrir (en mi caso, mucho mejor al 2do dia). Bastante redondo, con unos taninos suaves y amables. Para acompañar una comida mas que para degustar solo. Reservar.

Another winner from Guigal. Decanted and served two hours later, it was an 87 on night one and an 89 on night two. The alcohol is a bit too much, but thankfully isn’t as distracting as many Grenache-dominant Rhone wines; wish they could bring it down to the 13.5% sweet spot. That aside, it has lots of typical red and black fruit aromas, lots of mid-palate sweetness, a good acid backbone and a balnced finish. Probably best ‘22-28. As usual, excellent QPR.

Deep ruby with a narrow rim. Medium intensity aromas of lavender, acai berries and freshly ground pepper. The fruit profile on the palate is initially red-toned (strawberry and cherry) but turns black with time in the glass. Lots of spice (herbes de provence) and a hint of smoke emerge on the mid-palate and carry through to the finale. The alcohol is a problem for me - hot and scratches the back of the throat.

Bright red fruit, espresso, some earth, a very very subtle salinity on the nose. The palate comes across similarly notes-wise but is rather soft, not in a flabby way, but just feels like it lacks a little acid and drive on the palate. There’s a little bit of lack of flavor intensity. It’s not bad, it’s just missing some of the depth and drive you’ve seen in some previous vintages.

So....new vintage , and holding its own against the 2015 and 2016 previously reviewed here..... A 3 hour decant is a must for this 4 year old. On nose: blackberries , brick dust and cherry pits. On palate: a follow through of the above flavours, as well as notes of sage, cranberry and coffee , bolstered by good acidity.....lean , well made but needs a few years to loosen up....good with Lamb.....
Solid and dependable mid-week selection. Drinks above price and a hour favorite. Dark medium bodied blend with enjoyable finish. Needs a little time open.

Corked, but… I really like the mid weight I can see in this release. 2016 lacked the elegance and grip that I see in the best vintages of this style (like 2015).

Finally, I can taste this classic of a classic. For the price of 7-10€ this performs really well. This wine had initially some red fruit on the nose, that turned quite fast into dark cherry, plum and spice. In the mouth the impression continues, and I get notes of iron, leather and crushed stone. Very round, no edges. On the finish some tannins. I would have loved a bit more structure, but then also this wine has everything you can ask for at his price point. Perfect mid-week quaffer.

Bought Majestic UK April 2021 for £9.99 promo reduced price.
N...more interesting than I expected, a nice surprise; rich ripe dark fruits, a tad smokey.
C....deep red, not clear; off-muddy for a 'commercial' wine, the second surprise of the day.
T....medium+ body, good concentration, everything in balance, drinking very well at 4 yrs old. I wouldn't keep it any longer, drink up while the acid's still balancing all that 2017 ripe fruit: cherries/raspberries/pomegranate/damson plum. Ends near-dry, just a hint of some grippy tannins. Flavours are a bit shorter than previous years/vintages, but this 2017 is still a very good example of a 'commercial' CdR and, at £9.99, billiant value for money (VFM). A reliable quaffer, especially reliable in reportedly decent seasons/vintages.
Dark ruby red colour. Medium nose with dark plum, blackberry and crowberry. Medium taste of dark plum, blackberry and crowberry. Medium long and dry finish. Medium (+) acidity. Medium tannins. This wine is extremely closed even after 60 minutes decanting. Deep ruby. Not much of a nose. Some cherry and mineral, but I am not getting much. After some aggressive swirls of the glass, I do get some tobacco smoke notes. Medium-full bodied and grippy tannins. Cherry, plum, and faint blackberry on the entry. Turns peppery and spicy on the mid palate. Moderate tannic finish that is mineral heavy. All of the flavors were faint and I had to really struggle to pull out the components. This was not what I expect from a Guigal CdR and we opened a different bottle for dinner leaving this wine in the decanter.
Revisiting with another 4 hours exposed to air and we have a completely different wine. I didn’t take any notes, but the flavors all seemed to pop out more. The typical perfume notes I associate with CdR appeared and shined through on the mid-palate and finish.
I expect entry level CdRs to be a lot more approachable than this. The price is great at $12.50 a bottle. If I had a large cellar, I would buy a full or half case and revisit in 3-5 years. I am sure this wine will blossom and become an awesome cellar defender.

Purple. At this stage it seems still quite young to me and my first impression has been one of a wine inferior to its 2016 counterpart. But after 3-4 hours from the opened bottle it puts on weight and even more important: complexity. Mulberries, dark berries, dark cherries, plums, incense, celery. The tannins are intense, but round and ripe. I'm quite confident, that this is going to be a worthy successor of the 2015 and 2016. Excellent. 5/12+/16+/7+. -2026. 89-91 from the WA, as in the last vintages.
According to Guigal's website this reliable cuvée is typically a blend between Syrah 50%, Grenache 40% and Mourvèdre 10%. I enjoyed this 2017 more than I did the 2013 and 2014, if my TNs were reliable. It was medium++ bodied with very attractive sweet cherry infused fruit, like a lot of the better CDRs and CDRVs from the northerly parts of the South like Vinsobres. in addition there was a faint sprinkling of spice, a Balsamic hint, decent depth, suave texture and fresh enough acidity leading to a finish with ripe well covered tannins. At the price I paid, €10, it is well worth repurchase but it can be bought for less on the web. Very good.

Appearance - dark, deep ruby red
Aroma - fruit forward, blackberry, cherry plums. Some earthy/mushroom notes as well. Leather, vanilla.
Taste - round, juicy. Blackberry, cherry, spice and some vanilla. Mild tannins are silky and add structure. Relatively low acidity. Medium full body.
Overall - a great value, the lower acidity makes it a lesser recommendation for pairing with food, but for quality at its price, hard to beat.

Really loving this. Great story on the bottle for us. But not the point here. Opens nicely with some time. Blackberry comes to mind with every sip. Nice lingering fruit notes. I enjoy this consistent (not flat) note that goes from front to back. Juicy not jammy.

I really like the mid weight I can see in this release. 2016 lacked the elegance and grip that I see in the best vintages of this style (like 2015).
Will buy some to give it another crack.
Ps- does the app only crash for me when I type too quickly?

Finally, I can taste this classic of a classic. For the price of 7-10€ this performs really well. This wine had initially some red fruit on the nose, that turned quite fast into dark cherry, plum and spice. In the mouth the impression continues, and I get notes of iron, leather and crushed stone. Very round, no edges. On the finish some tannins. I would have loved a bit more structure, but then also this wine has everything you can ask for at his price point. Perfect mid-week quaffer.

Brilliant QPR at 9€ on sale! This is of course not a complex but rather reliable crowd pleaser wine. I missed the typical CdR heat and was a bit surprised by the sweetish finish (due to extraction, 14.5 % ABV).

Had high hopes for this, but it just doesn’t deliver. It didn’t get any better with aerating. Medium body with tart fruit flavors. What we could not get past was the very acidic/tangy taste is has all the way thru start to finish on the palette. Food didn’t really help the flavors.

Very good.
