Finishing off a lovely Leoville Poferre evening with this gem, popular at the table tonight. Mature with lovely aromas of citrus, hawthorne, a touch of pear. Precise acidity supporting the RS. Really went down in a jiffy, did not feel too sweet to anyone of the tasters. 94+

This one should win an award for Most Improved Player. So dramatically different and better than earlier bottles. Maybe it just needed that much time? While still on the sweeter end of the Spatlese range, this time the acidity was there in balance and it was a refreshing compliment to the richer Thanksgiving foods. Was just so happy too see this blossom. A delicious showing. Golden apple, some light apricot, just a little spritz. Danced on the palate. So it really was a Donnhoff after all!

Full yellow. Exotic nose of pineapple and red cherry. Substantial weight, quite sweet for this level. Decadent fruit, adequate acidity, and late arriving soil. Rich, open, loosely knit Spätlese. It worked with California/Asian fusion dishes tonight.

Really delicious. Could’ve used a touch more acid but all the elements are there. Unctuous, full and round tropical fruit, touch petroleum. Long finish. Not cloying but on the brink. Very interesting saltiness and salinity.

My last bottle from this vintage, and thankfully a good showing after a decidedly lackluster one three years ago. It’s still not a wine for acid freaks, but it is finely balanced now that some of the youthful fat has backed away. Ripe peaches and pineapple are layered over river rocks and iron filings, creating a solid core that fades to an ethereal finish. I wish it had a little more zip, but with a spicy green curry it was a lovely drink.

Medium gold. Honey and almost overripe tropical fruit nose. Orange marmalade, fresh orange, peach, mango, brown sugar, baked apple Medium weight. Crisp apple skins on the finish mixed in with marmalade. Juicy. Good, but not exceptional, length. Sweet, but appropriate to a Spätlese, and well balanced by the acidity. Easy to drink. Great stuff!

Had a bottle a few years back that was very evolved, but this was in a better spot. More sweet than it should be but delivered the goods on flavor profile and matched the mango chutney with the naan bread best out of the Indian dinner items on the table. Can last longer but doesn't have the acidity to make it more interesting so I'll try and work through these sooner than other vintages.

This one was a bit concerning. I love me some Donnhoff and have been excited to start looking at the '07s but this was so evolved and cloying. Deep golden coloring, very pronounced sweetness. Flavors still attractive but that deft touch was missing. Label did have some sign of leakage but not sure if it was this cork or a bottle that may have been above it. Own a few of these, will need to open a 2nd bottle soon and hope it's in different condition.

Served blind to my guests in a vertical tasting with 2000, 2001 and 2005, this was the clear loser. It was thick and flat. Hopefully it was just in a stage, and will come out of it. The other three vintages were vibrant and complex, even the 2000.

Citrus fruits, mainly lemon, predominate, with pear accents. Lovely texture, nearly creamy, but the still ample acidity adds cut and deftness to balance out the richness imparted by the sugar. Still fresh tasting, vibrant. Better IMHO than some of the recent notes; better than I was expecting.

Rieslings & Pinots (Sun Wah BBQ, Chicago IL): Nose: The nose is tropical and with a distinct sweetness to it along with bing cherries, tropical fruits, papaya, white peaches, red apples, and some white fruits. The nose is highly aromatic and there is a succulent balance to it.
Taste: Medium/full bodied with medium+ acidity. The acidity isn't as cutting as it should be given the weight and density of the feel along with bing cherries, minerals, tropical citrus, papaya, white peaches, and some red apples.
Overall: This is a confusing riesling. The sweetness is borderline cloying, but it doesn't get flabby or overly done. I would love to check in on this again as I really enjoyed the nose, but was slightly confused by the palate.

Riesling and Pinot at Sun Wah (Chicago, IL): #07-08, 9% abv. Uncharacteristically, this was an unconvincing bottle of Dönnhoff Spätlese. Extremely large-scaled and broad, with almost Auslese-level sweetness. Not quite enough acidity here to keep this fresh, and you really do feel the weight here. Lots of very sweet fruit, to the detriment of the wine, unfortunately. I'm not quite sure what happened here tonight, but I'd definitely be open to revisiting this at another time.

Classy Riesling with tropical fruits galore. Appreciate the balance with it not being overly sweet, nor mouth ripping acids. Good length on the finish to boot.
Plenty of grace and elegance here, carrying it's vibrant acidity without a ton of RS or fruit, but enough to make their positive presence felt. In a good place right now but no rush. This suffered slightly from order of operations, served after a '61 Oddero and '99 Kiraludvar Tokaji.

The nose is very "cool" - not tropical or overwhelming. Same with the palate - very lithe yet still fully concentrated and sweet. Seems to have a minty / menthol component along with the tropical fruit. Medium acidity but not at all flabby. Delicious.

Interesting showing for this wine. When I first opened it there was an intensely tropical aroma of pineapple and mango. Once we got around to dinner that had calmed down a bit, with more mineral and some citrus poking in. It has shed some baby fat, so what was once a lush spätlese has become more linear, though still on the rich side. We left some in the bottle to check on it in 24 hours. Looks like it will be a long term keeper, as the balance is good.

Not a very complex nose, even if it was a little warm. Clove, marmalade, red apple and baby powder. Much more going on on the palate. Texture of grape or apple skins. On the palate, red apple, orange marmalade, peach and candied pineapple. Sweet but certainly not heavy at all. The sweetness is well balanced by a subtle acidity and the marmalade bitterness, especially on the finish. Good length. Delicious and eminently gulpable due to the 9 percent alcohol. Had it with Chinese food which, was perfect.

2007 German Rieslings at the Magnum Society (Wellington, New Zealand): Colour, with the last wine, the darkest gold. Initially on bouquet a whiff of turpentine that largely blew off. Aromas of citrus, tropical fruit such as pineapple and rock melon, a little spice, with some chalk, seashell notes and attractive minerality. On the palate, more racy acids up front. Again the profile is very ripe fruit but with a lovely, silky texture. Nice integrated structure, good acid balance with some elegance. Quite long. Flavours of rich, ripe tropical and orchard fruits on the palate. Again seemed quite primary and again I would have liked a little more complexity or development in the flavour profile. Cellar for 3-5 years +, 92. Drinking very well the next evening.

A wonderful Brucke that is drinking unsurprisingly young. Aromas of citrus, melon, some white orchard fruit and a little tropical fruit over complex saline minerality. Great balance of RS and acid and wonderfully silky with that amazing serenity that Donnhoffs often show. Very good persistence with its beautiful mineral-laden finish. Can't wait to revisit this in the future.

Great bottle of Riesling. Tasted very sweet and creamy on the first day, almost a Sauternes-light, but the acidity evolved over the course of 3-4 days to balance it out. Wish I would have bought several more bottles at $30, but looking forward to enjoying the second one in a couple years.

Smell: stone and tropical fruits with an underlying mineral note.
Taste: Apples, citrus, and pineapple with a hint of sea salty air at the tail end.
Overall: I think this wine has some serious potential for the future...but right now it's not warranting the $45 price tag I paid for it. While I really do enjoy this wine...I have had others from the Mosel that were similar enough and half the price...

Really tasty wine ... I was surprised not by the roundness of the fruit, but by the lack of residual sugar. Surprisingly balanced for a spatlese. Nice tropical fruit and white flowers on the nose. The palate has more of those tropical fruits, pineapples and pears and kiwis with surprisingly bright acidity. Went really well with our spicy seared tuna and spicy asian noodles. Last bottle.
AS this wine compares to other like wines it is amazing, at the rick of sounding bias, its really nice balance between stone and fruit... slightly sweet and perfect...

Lemon lime and cherry flavors. Fruity at this point without much minerality. I was surprised at the apparent (relatively) low acidity. Soft and easy. It did seem to firm up a bit on the second day but, in general, this lacked tension. Further update: on day three, the acidity seemed to have become even more pronounced. Not so soft now, with a lively, pungent, tangy mouthfeel. Perhaps I underestimated this wine.

German wine tasting (Martins office): Clear light yellow color. Intense nose with aromas of wine gums, champagne extract and white pears. Loads of white pears juice on the palate as well, but with more nuances of mushrooms, minerals and white flowers on the midpalate and finish. Very good length and refreshing acidity in perfect balance with the sweetness.
Wonderful fruit and a finely layered mineral backbone, but Brücke is not supposed to be this friendly when it is young. I would have liked to have seen more structure for long-term development.

Beautiful spicy aromatics of flowers, white fruits, herbs and minerals. Intensely bright, clear fruit flavours on the palate over spices and herbs with a sudden mineral infusion at the back end. Terry Theise tasting - German wines from 2007; 6/10/2008-6/13/2008 (Tribecca grill): more floral, riper, touches of botrytis, will need a long time but very very good.
