Drank my last bottle of Carlisle Petite Syrah's. Had over an evening with marinated skirt steak and a rib eye. I have to say although the wine is well made and has held up, I don't get an real development of any tertiary flavors. The wine just seems more restrained versus when it was young. The wine has finely resolved tannins, smooth black fruits and a long finish. As I have gotten older, my palate has shifted away from these type of wines. To open a good Petite with a friend who both appreciates good Petite and knows how smoke a great rack of ribs to accompany said bottle is a rare treat! And so I was treated in early March. The wine was in stellar condition. Brooding, but not heavy. Purple/black coloring with playful tannins and great balance. This was exactly why I enjoy cellaring Petites, an archtype bottle. Bit of smokey backnotes but this was not a garrique style, more about the focused fruit and length of finish. In a window now but feels like will hold at this level for a while longer.

Based on a previous reviewer’s note that this would go well with any charred meat - I pulled this to go with a sous vide flank steak that was then charred to finish on the grill. The wine is solid and the match was great, but I guess my preferences are shifting. A big, bold but well aged petite sirah used to be my absolute favorite. As I’m getting older, I’m tending toward more delicate nuanced wines. Nothing wrong with this Carlisle, it’s a fine specimen - just no wow-factor for my aging palate and shifting preferences.

Truly of of the greatest Petite Sirah's I had. Purchased from the winery, stored perfectly, this is a real standout. Fat, round, dense, deep dark purple color, this wine will probably live a long life (10 more years?). I will hold on to my last bottle for another 5+ years...

Still young but showing well. cassis, rustic berry and herbs, blueberry notes on the nose as well as syrah-ish savory touch. young mid with a hint of rustic tannins. ripe black berries and fruit along with pepper and herbs. the finish is plush and long with structure to keep it balanced. just excellent and years to go.

The Carlisle '06 Petite Sirah showed a remarkably dense and intense bouquet of crushed blackberry, cherry sauce, olive, pepper, minerals, and spice. On the palate, I found velvety textures with dark spicy fruit, sweet herbs and a bump of tannin / acid on the mid-palate that excited the senses. It finished a little shorter than expected, on dark fruits and a hint of bitter herbs, yet with a coating of dry fruit extract. Very Nice!

Breathed in glasses around 45 min before serving. Pitch black core with a violet rim. The nose is straightforward blackberry & cracked pepper. The blackberry notes follow to the palate with some blue fruit. Oily texture & huge concentration. This one doesn't show the structure one generally sees in Petite. Pure, clean fruit, but a bit one dimensional. I like it, don't quite love it.

A bit tight at first but opened up quickly in the glass. Nice rich dark fruit flavors, ripe but not overly so. Soft tannins and drinking well now so I don't expect much improvement. BUT . . . this does not say Petite to me at all. My wife was shocked when she saw the label. I don't need Petite to be a teeth staining brawny monster, but this bottle did not seem to show the varietal character at all. Overall a nice but not very complex high 80s table red.

My last one. Pretty good, with some zip in the wine with less thick/glycerine. Iron, spicy char, dark chocolate. Dark fruit in the realm of black cherry and blackberry in the finish, which also repeats the spicy tones and the same zip of nice acid. Won't seduce you with heavy fruit or sheer petite power but instead draw you in with a more gentle touch.

Dark garnet to purple color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of Kirsch, black pepper, black currants and a hint of flowers. Flavors of black cherries, black berries and dark plums. Medium acidity, firm tannins, full bodied. Drink now with plenty of air or continue to hold. Big, young wine.

Opened and tasted, then left for about 2 hours prior to sharing. Deep purple, inky as one expects in just about any Carlisle. On the nose, it smells 'complete' with elements of earth, stone, some blueberry. Wonderfully flavorful and balanced with more dark fruit, earth, and 'dark' elements - chocolate, coffee. Tannins are still strong, but definitely in balance; stood up beautifully with lamb chops. I've bought Carlisle PSs for some time, but never get higher end PS when tasted early - too much tannin, too grippy. This is the first Carlisle PS I've tried with some decent age on it and it really rewards. Definitely will go for a while, but I'm thinking its getting into a really pleasurable window.

Splash decanted, let sit in the decanter for about 1/2 hour, then rebottled and took to dinner. This is a big-un, as in a big wine. Lots of dark fruit, iron and some heat, which is tamed down when the wine is cool. I don't recall any big structure in the wine that would require for further aging. Sent the final glass home with one of our guests.

wonderful bottle. Very dark color throughout. Absurdly youthful. Graphite/lead pencil on the nose with dark fruits and underlying oak (mocha.) Full bodied, but not sappy or overblown at all. Very flavorful with blackberies and black fruit shining. Very juicy and flavorful. Loooong chalky/dusty finish with great grip and wonderful acidity to balance this out. Will age well for quite a while.

Purple and black in color. The nose has lightly perfumed notes of blueberry, black currants, and earth. The palate shows plenty of tar, ripe blueberry, mocha, licorice, and dried herb flavors. Still just a bit tannic, yet possessing a very nice texture and racy acidity.

If there is yet another varietal that we do not drink enough of, it is Petit Sirah. I have yet to have a petite sirah that has blown my mind, but this one was very tasty. Popped and poured tonight at Delorenzo’s Tomato Pies in Robbinsville, NJ, this showed a very nice dark color in the glass. When I say dark, this was dark. On the nose, some very nice dark berries dominate, with some nice hints of earth and vanilla. The nose was rounded out by a bit of cherry and mocha tones, and it was very pleasurable. On the palate, the wine showed very young, with some strong tannins and oak dominating, showing that I think this wine will easily age for another 4-5 years plus. More mixed berries on the palate, with a ton of black fruits strutting their stuff. This wine really started to open up at hour one, but the tannins and oak were still there. We put the cork back in the bottle and brought the rest home to finish, and it was a bit more of the same, but some blue berry started to come out as we got to the end of the bottle. There was a quite a bit of sediment in the bottle, so I don’t know if this is unfiltered, or if it was just a fluke. This bottle has been stored at 55 degrees since purchase direct from the winery thanks to our good friends Tom and Denise sharing their allocation with us. All in all, a nice petite sirah, and I look forward to the other bottle we have in the next 3-5 years. 90 points. Cheers!

Its been awhile since Ive had a young Carlisle PS and it didnt disappoint. Super concentrated and brambly, this really is more of a cocktail or after dinner wine. The tannin is pretty high as well as the oak on the nose. If it wasnt for the oak I would rate this a bit higher but for me that is a bit bothersome. Really just a seamless wine through the mid palate, I love the tannic finish as I think it gives the fruit something to stand up against, no flabby finish here. Nice wine and Im wondering if really these huge PS syrahs really just shouldnt be enjoyed young for what they are?

OC Fratello Offline--Stainless Chards And Petite Sirahs (Fratello's Laguna Niguel): Well done, Mr Nordhoff. Thank you for bringing this bottle. Since we tasted the wines blind, I had no idea this was an Officer petite but my notes placed this wine in my Top 3 for the night. Iron ore, red and black fruit, milk chocolate, cherry, plush and decadent. I also found an olive/tampenade note to the wine, too. Dense so give this wine another few years or decant really well. An excellent bottle.

Given my past trips up to see Mike, I suspect I drank the components of this wine from barrel, but this is the first time I have tried it bottled. Lots of cobbler, chocolate bar, what I wrote down as "tarry" and espresso. I took the remainder of the bottle home with me, will finish the note tonight when I drink the last glass. A big wine. At 24 hrs and finishing the wine now........dark color, as expected but I still think the 2007 Carlisle RRV syrah is still darker! Still some grip in the wine but it's fairly approachable, with same dark fruit, a red-ore edge to the palate, along with the same espresso finish. One thing of note tonight, there is some acidity lurking in this wine, enough to freshen up the fruit, the toasted oak, giving it some balance. Not a giant petite but true to the flavors.

Big wine, but the tannins are concealed by the abundant rich fruit. On the nose a nice loamy earthiness and dark fruits. Tannins come back on the end of the finish, but are fine grained. In the mouth, great balance and richness, along with blackberry and blueberry.

Dark as it gets. Not much on the nose initially -- after coaxing, some dark berries, charred oak and a savory/meaty element. Palate didn't show much fruit -- mostly just meat/beef blood. Finish was incredibly tannic -- not surprising for a PS -- but without a lot of fruit, this was not all that enjoyable. The next day the nose and palate were somewhat better but still not my favorite Carlisle -- score reflects the improvement after 24 hours.

This was one of my favorites of the night. Loads of dark fruits with a nice balance of acidity and tannins. I got some chocolate and with brie cheese, coffee and blueberry notes showed up on the finish.

Viscous, glass-staining. So thick and rich, you can almost chew it. Blackberry & eldeberry, very fruit-forward with nice spice on the long finish. Drank at the end of the evening with dessert and really enjoyed!

Decanted 2 hours. Still tight. Started to show better after more air time.
Will try the end of the bottle tonight.

This is really fantastic. Loads of burnt or toasted oak, which is consistent with most carlisle's I've had. Great extraction and balance to this wine, a great bargin.

The nose had black currant and pepper, blackberry, and a touch of blueberry. The palate was soft and had blackberry, pepper, blueberry, tar, and a nice graphite finish.
