This is perhaps the most compelling '75 Left Bank I've tried to date (besting Latour, among others). Like many Medoc wines from this vintage, there are savage tannins that overshadow the fruit, and this was giving very little on day 1, other than its stunning nose. But on day 2, this had transformed into a balanced and very enjoyable claret, with cassis and red berry fruit and an interesting nectarine note on the finish. Still rather primary considering its age, I think this still has decades of life ahead of it. This and the '66 remain benchmark wines for this estate in that era.

Smell of my early childhood, rosehip syrup. There is still a whiff or cassis but it is in homeopathic quantities. Old Bordeaux fruit (40 years +) tends do go from cassis to rosehips to tea to chocolate if it avoids becoming oxidised along the way. Still plenty of fruit, tannins have gone though it is starting to dry out a bit. Nice aged sweetness to the fruit, healthy signs. A charming old Bordeaux.

Coravin glass, really full of life, beautiful nose, vanilla spice and wet dog. Soft and elegant on the pallate, dry and chewy but also airy. Tobacco and leather finish. Fantastic old Bordeaux.

My first impression was it may have been done for but it slowly opened up offering the typical nose of funk, tar, graphite and dark stewed fruit. Unless undrinkable, vintage wines are a unique experience and an education. This example was past it's prime (imho) albeit enjoyable enough.

Drank over 2 hours. Opened 8 hours in advance and served at approximately 16.5⁰C. Perfect neck level fill.
Light red with very subtle bricking at the edge. There's a decent amount of fruit left for a 47 year old wine. The fruit is mostly red, cherries in particular. There's some cedar and a tiny bit of tobacco. The tannins are almost fully resolved and the finish is very good (20 seconds +). Even though 1975 is not an exceptional year for Bordeaux and it might be time to drink these up, this is a very good mature Margaux.

very similar to my last note - brick red with touch of orange on the rim - reticent nose, but could coax out some old cabernet fruit, violets and leather - soft round fruit in the mouth, but much lighter body than my last tasting note - tannins mostly resolved but still present - good acid-fruit balance - 10-15 sec finish - a good example of a nicely developed mature Margaux that still can hold up to food (leg of lamb) - another 1975 that has done much better than predicted with time, though definitely on the down slope based on this bottle

Base of neck fill, with a bit of mold under the capsule from minor leakage. Cork came out nearly in one piece, with only the last 3/8" breaking off. Decanted and returned to the bottle. Color of garnet with some browning. Wonderful complex nose. Similar on the palate, with cedar, sight barnyard and a little sous bois, and substantial tannins. Modest fruit component of red cherries and raspberries. Well balanced. Picks up some viscosity and weight over time. Gently acidity helps extend the finish. A great bottle of traditional Bordeaux.

A private dinner (Restaurant Bak, Amsterdam, NL): Included in the line-up to celebrate the life of Eric Albada Jelgersma, the owner of Château Giscours since 1996, who passed away yesterday. Not tasted since 15 May 2004, when I first met him. A beautiful 1975, very much alive and together, nicely resolved tannins still provide grip, lovely Cabernet character, masculine but elegant, retains its fruit, slender but not skinny, good length. On fine form.

J&VB with RIBBS (Brunswick House): Following on as a 'backup' to the 66, the chances were this was Giscours too. The nose is far richer and more recognisably Margaux. Younger, but not hugely so as it turns out though I was a decade even younger in my guess. Just a touch of hardness on the finish that points to 75, but plenty of lush and rounded fruit to cover most of it. Nicely resolved and a treat to drink. Far better than a bottle (same source) six years ago. ****

Nice drinking for its age. Very earthy dusty and old school Bordeaux. Not much fruit left but still drinking nicely. Reminded me of being in an old, dark, french, damp, stone cellar. Did not decant for fear of going downhill too fast. Consumed over about an hr and held up.

Very surprising wine. I was not optimistic when decanting... lots of sediment even after allowing the bottle to stand upright for several days. Not much happening right after decanting.... and then!
Color: brown-red, clear
Nose: closed at outset... then very subtle aromas of dried fruit, smoke, and tobacco.
Body/flavor: light to medium body; very good balance with right acidity and tannins (still!); complex with dried fruit and leather. Continued to open, even after several hours.
Aftertaste: lingering.
Wine was not flashy... but very enjoyable with food; low alcohol 12.5%

For the money this stands strong amongst the better '75's. A bit more rustic, with barnyard and some teeth to it, but still very nice. Jo preferred it to the '75 Pichon Lalande tonight but I disagree as the latter was much more balanced and complete, and this one just a bit dry at the finish - but either way this shows well for it's age and the price. B+/A-

Birthday dinner at Luke's. Asked staff to open and let breath for 30 min but not to decant which was the right decision I believe. In neck fill. A youthful and fairly dark garnet with a translucent rim. From the beginning nice dark fruit, cedar and some leather. Nice balance. Medium finish. With more air the fruit faded a bit and fine to medium tannins came out. Also some slightly awkward metallic notes which might have however been due to the combination with creamy spinach which we ordered with the steak. Very nice mature Bordeaux which has still a few more years to go. 91-92

First impression is a little bit thin and a weak but very good smell of old Margaux, leather, earth, farmyard. It opens up over the next 1-2 hours with a little bit more power and a much better complexity. It has a good balance, tanins are well balanced, ot has some secondary flavours. Very good wine and worth drinking now and the next 2-3 years

Mature wines at Marco's (Milford, CT): A pleasant surprise, a '75 left banker that's not really tannic and austere! This is drinking really well right now with a core of sappy red and dark fruited flavours framed by mature cedar, leather, tobacco and dried floral notes. There's a nice richness to the fruit, the tannins are surprisingly finessed and fine grained and it's drinking very nicely with an hour or two in the decanter.

Blind at The Medlar 2 (The Medlar, London): Maturing, mid garnet, quite dry but with a slightly madeira cake ripe character. Seems claret-like but persuaded by a suggestion it might be a trad Rioja. **** A very dark colour with browning rim for a wine of this age. Taste rather fresh with sweet fruits of dark, ripe cherries and plum. It actually puts on weight after 1 hr in glass which I did not expect. Well balanced and tannin is soft and integrated although you can still tell its there, probably helps to keep this wine alive. Maybe 1975 is really the year of tannin for bdx? Good showing.

The last bottle in my stash, this beautiful Bordeaux paired well with filet, lasagna, potatoes lyonnaise, and ginger carrots. The group smelled hints of cigar smoke, plums and cherries followed by a tongue of well-balanced fruit, finishing off with light tobacco and soft tannins.

surprisingly, still quite a bit of tannin for a 32 yr old bordueax...the group felt that these bottles have another 3-7 yrs of life in them. We smelled new leather, light cigar, some hints of raspberry and black cherry, some earth and smokiness. On the tongue, we tasted some citrus, blackberries, and bitter chocolate around the cloak of tannin.

A beautiful jeweled color noting less age than you would think. At first cassis and cigars with black olives and a cherry cough drop note. Great texture and mouthfeel to this wine, Quite supple for a '75. The finish was long and with a hint of smoke. Ater an hour or two it fleshed out even more with darker fruits, plums and a very pure, precise fruit essence almost. Really good stuff. After a little more time, a very Margaux like perfumey sweetness came along as well as more depth. A little longer and black olives and iron that made me think of rare meat. Then the cedar came out bigtime, with a freshness like walking into a cedar closet. Porcinis and black licorice arrived even later. Quite a progression/ evolution that I am glad we were able to spread out over two plus hours or so. I think I would have appreciated this less drinking only one glass. A wonderful glass of wine at peak. I started out with a 92 but after two hours, I have to give it 94pts.

An easy afternoon with close friends (@ PdV): Dark carmine. Very mature and little sweet bouquet. Creamy taste with a lot of (too) old acidity. Still in good balance, but too smooth. The aftertaste is long but not inspiring. This wine is a caricature of what it was 10 years ago. Together with the 1978 this wine belonged to my favourite Giscours and even Margaux. As you understand this wine is at the end of its life, but I expect it to last at about the same level for another 10 years. Because it was absolutely beautiful in the past I do not score in in CT. If I would do it for the quality at this moment it would be around 76 Before posting this I see that my opinion differs a lot from the other TN's. The scores I find here are about the same (or even lower) than my scores 10 years ago. You might think my bottle was an off bottle, but I doubt that at the moment. I followed the evolution of this wine and drank it at least 7 times. If I find my older notes I will publish them here as well.

Just found an older TN. Giscours 1975 and 1978 were among the 10 wines which made me crazy about wine. This was a superb bottle. Mature with a beautiful dose of oak. Cigar box, cedar, cassis, smoke and soft licorice in the bouquet. Same on the palate with beautiful ripe fruits and soft and round, melted tannin which still offers a pleasant bite. Full bodied and a long lingering finish. Fully mature now, but this can last another 5+ years (I wrote in 1996).

This is really is decent shape, considering the age....37 years! It actually opened up over 90-120 minutes. Great mid palate texture. Dark fruits and secondary leather....really smooth. Give it some time open.

Very dark for its age; Deep dark and sweet fruit, some pipe tobacco, tannins almost gone, fresh and long, layered. This is what we hoped for with the 75’s.

Garnet with tawny rim followed by tertiary nose revealing florality, brett, cassis and spice with well integrated oak. Silky and ripe in palate with supple tannins and zesty acidity. Very harmonious and long.

Blind at The Medlar 2 (The Medlar, London): Maturing, mid garnet, quite dry but with a slightly madeira cake ripe character. Seems claret-like but persuaded by a suggestion it might be a trad Rioja. No, claret. A bit too light for mid 80s. 75? Yes. Pretty, but lacks real length and depth and persistence. ***

Wonderful ruby color without material browning, tannins fully resolved revealing a long, complex soft finish. Nose is modest, but complex with dried fruit and mineral dimensions. Good for at least five more years and probably more. Delightful mature Margaux.

As with my recent bottles, this is a classic but not overwhelming aged Bordeaux. I would hesitate to leave these much longer - although I can only speak to my bottles, where the corks are almost entirely saturated; perhaps other bottles may have more life...

Didn't decant, but left to breathe for about three hours. I was somewhat apprehensiveupon seeing the cork, but like my previous bottles, this one was superb. Beautiful Margaux nose and palate of sweet fruit. Lovely balance. It's hard to beat aged Bordeaux, and aged Margaux in particular. Life is too short not to drink these wines.

If I would do it for the quality at this moment it would be around 76
Before posting this I see that my opinion differs a lot from the other TN's.
