Nose of black fruit, pepper, spice box, hint of green pepper. Mouth is medium full with blackberry, nice pepper, and strong but balanced tannins. Nice dustiness. Finish is quicker on the fruit than on the tannins with nice lingering heat.

Port like nose. Raisins. Stewed plums and cherries. Over-ripe blackberries but in a kind of luscious way. Soft tannins. There some acid holding the berry fruit.

Nice bouquet of berries and oak caramel with full body and ripe tanning with floods of black berry, plum and spice. Very fresh and juicy yet has hold on to its structure. At its peak but from the tannins I think it will hold together another couple of years.

Very dark purple in the glass. Fruity and volatile nose. Somewhat unusual fruit flavors on introduction to the palate. I’m getting more strawberry and red raspberry when I normally get blackberry from Zinfandel. This seems to give it a lighter feel than I normally see in Zin. As it passes from mid-palate to back of the throat I’m getting alcohol. I don’t know if I am getting more sensitive to alcohol or what, but I sure seem to be noticing it a lot, lately. A pretty good wine, but I’m glad I pulled this one from storage. I don’t see much more potential for this.

Decanted for 2 hours, ate with tourtiere. Spice and clove well matched by this structured Zin. Bouquet was heavy on the toasted oak, vanilla, stewed greens, light notes of red berries. Palate was round and full, tannins medium and finish somewhat limited. Terrific vintage and expression of the Seghesio terroir.

Time to drink. Has mellowed since last time. Balanced. Fruit just slightly faded. Medium dark color with no brown edges in glass. Very much in the Seghesio "house" style.

We double decanted the wine before we poured the first glass. It was dark purple in colour and offered blackberry, black cherry, raisins, clove, cinnamon and some leather on the nose. On the palate the wine was spicy and slightly raisiny, with blackberry, dark cherry, some plum, chocolate, pepper, clove and cinnamon, paired with a good, creamy mouthfeel. The wine paired reasonably well with 90% cocoa content dark chocolate, but not with 85% cocoa content or below.
We had this 2007 Seghesio Zinfandel Old Vine next to the 2008 Seghesio Zinfandel Sonoma County. The wines were surprisingly similar in flavour profile. The 2007 Seghesio Zinfandel Old Vine contained the alcohol better and was the more serious, more elegant and longer-lived wine of the two, but the more candy-driven 2008 Seghesio Zinfandel Sonoma County was not outdistanced by the 2007 Seghesio Zinfandel Old Vine and might even be the slightly more delicious wine of the two at their current stages. 89+

Almost a year since my last bottle (see 12/17/10 note). Opaque purple with a ruby rim. Nose of plum, vanilla, spice, and iodine. Ripe balata of blackberry, fig, plum, and licorice. Very good length. Pleasant acidity. Integrated oak. Mild tannins.

Decanted 1 hour, rebottled and left for another hour prior to drinking. Enjoyed this more than the previous bottle. Think the decant helped. Nice Zinfandel nose of bramble and black fruits. Medium plus body with nice freshness and acidity to go along with boysenberry, blackberry and blueberry fruit profile. A little pepper and spice on the medium length finish with smooth tannins. The oak was much more integrated in this bottle. Very solid Zin and a decent QPR at $30.

Some notes of vanilla oak and cacao. 20 second finish with smooth tannins. Drank very well on the second night also. This is very good but not my favorite in the Seghesio stable at this price point.

A lot better than any bordeaux at this price (cirka 30 euro) and should be rewarded for not being jammy, as so many other zinfandels. However, will a zinfandel ever reach greatness? I doubt it.

This is the old vine zin. this is one thick and juicy bottle of wine! on the nose i get tons of blueberry and strawberry and a bit of the grapey grape with a touch of mocha and a little spicy oak. on the palate there is more of that great fruit like cherry and blueberry and some more of that licorice mocha on the mid with a peppery oaky spice on the finish. the finish is nice and long and the tannins are prominent, they way i like them! i really like this wine.

Popped and poured. All around nice bottle of wine. Much more integrated in aroma and flavors than most of the zins I have had. Nose of black pepper, boysenberry and bramble. The mouthfeel was very smooth and although the tannins were present they melded into the overall structure of the wine. Flavors of boysenberry pie. Medium length finish. Would purchase again.

This was very nice, but I'm not sure the price difference makes it worth it as compared to the regular Sonoma bottling. More structure then that wine, and it's likelier to be better in a couple years. Rich, peppery, pretty full throttle, but not in the over the top over extracted way, it's just a big, deep, zin. touch of heat which goes away. Good.

Decanted about 2 hours. Nose, red fruit. Drank after dinner, to be fair, probably should have been paired with a meal. Found the tannins moderate. Long finish, and overall a nice wine. But found it a little out of balance. I've had better Zins for the price.

Opened 3 hours before dinner to a pleasant surprise of fruit, berries and road tar (strange?). First sip was young yet strong with late lingering honey smells. For a Zinfandel these are all very strange yet wonderful smells and tastes that evoke memories of the past. Shared with venison, Brussels sprouts, potatoes, and salad. Venison had a strong wine, onion, cherry, and cognac reduction sauced. This wine held up with all of these strong flavors. A definite repeat buy.

Initial blast of ripe black cherry, black raspberry with creamy vanillin nose, followed by sweet tannin-laced, lightly spiced black cherry fruit. Some dark tannins kick in at the medium finish. And after 45 minutes the fruit is shutting down a bit, so don't know if this'll get better w/age. Has enough acid, but I doubt it. I need to find me a fat-boy, where are my Woody Artists when I need them???
Really liked the '07 Sonoma bottling a year ago for its fruity exuberance. This is a little more nerdy and less sexy, which is not mutually exclusive in a well made wine. At least that's what I'm thinking at the moment. Also tasting an '05 Dunham, Trutina along with the Seghesio OldVines which I'll report on as well.

A: Deep purple N: Blackcurrant with a jammy tendency, over ripe dark berries and vanilla so powerful it might just break my nose. P: Cracked pepper is dominant and the vanilla is eye watering. Nothing subtle in this effort. At first tasting, it has the suggestion of a merlot/cab before resolving into this disappointment.
C: Chateau Montelena makes fabulous mature zin compared to this and costs less. JTH would have this if his 4 fav zins were not available. I think this stuff isn't worth $30 and has little going for it. The U.S. makes way better zins than this.

C: Dark red N: Dark red fruit with a mature complexity displaying a nicely integrated oak tone and som minerals P: Nice Acidity, good grip in the tannin, dry red fruit, some sweet tones in the finish. Medium lenght. Nicely structured wine if not for the sweet character in the finish. Remeber to add some suger in the sauce ;-)

Rather coarse after pulling cork, but better and better with air. Big Zin fruit, moderate tannin (not too high), good acid seasoned with oak. Nice now if you like them a bit rough, but should improve over the next few years to 90+ quality. Good food wine.

Popped and poured. Dark garnet. Nose of smoke, plum, blackberry and cherry. Ripe full palate of blackberry, spice, pepper, and espresso. Nice length. Pleasant acidity. Mellow tannins. Not overly oaky. Some alcohol. Rounder, fruitier midpalate than the basic '07 Sonoma Zin. Excellent wine!

Amazing hedonistic bomb, high alcohol and extremely bruising, should hate it but we loved it! - Dark, well concentrated with a nose of black fruit, plum, cherry, spice and vanilla, huge, a touch of heat that will integrate over time, spicy complexity, smooth, sweet on the palate with terrific length, should be even better in 2 years or so, awesome! (91 Points).

Old vine zin called for Australian rack of lamb with pomery mustard, candied pecan and penko crust. Being a young wine, it was alcohol forward, at 16% but tasted cassis, sour cherries and licorice. If I could hold onto wine, this one would do well in a few years with polite company.

Served after a two-hour decant. Dark, blackish-red color. Briar and blackberry nose. Dense red and black fruit flavor with pronounced acidity and nicely integrated tannins. Velvety smooth. We had this on July 4th to accompany baby back ribs smoothered in KC Masterpiece barbeque sauce. Wine and food matches don't get any better.

Having drank much of the regular Sonoma Seghesio 2007, I was interested to taste the old vines. It actually offered much of the same jammy fruit flavors I have come to expect from this consistent Zin producer. The difference was in the texture and mouthfeel. Less spice, and tannins. Really a smooth cream-like fruit explosion on the palate. Very easy to suck this juice down. Rich deep purple color, and lots of red raspberry, and cherry on the nose. Again, taste is much of the normal Seghesio Zin experience, but much smoother and more creamy (little if any spice notes). Paired with the Wednesday Meatload special at Rosebud Steakhouse in Chicago. The Bacon wrapped meat smoke paired well with this Jam-Monster Zin! Not sure it's any sort of value wine, but a nice experience.

For the 2010 Nashville IRP (“Inventory Reduction Party” - credit to Kacy in SF), we compared five Segeshio Zin’s: 2006 Sonoma County Old Vine, 2007 Sonoma County Old Vine, 2007 Sonoma County (#10 2008 WS Top 100), 2007 Rockpile and 2008 Sonoma County. All five wines pleased the tasters. The 2007 Sonoma County won top honors with the 2006 and 2007 Old Vines close behind (this wine’s CT score is my own). This wine was the only one of the five that was not a "stand-alone" wine - acidity suggested best with food. Described as "floral" by Hugh. Prized by Joe.

Tasted at the winery. Lots of red floral character on the nose that seems to be in perfect proportion to the black and blue fruits, blackberry pie and white pepper. Mouthwatering acidity and a long, layered finish. Lean, focused and very polished, this shows solid structure, tremendous complexity and lots and lots of value. 15,6% abv, drink thru 2014.

Refined and elegant for Zinandel, with a well knit, opulent structure. If you like the oaky, vanilla thing then this offers some enticing aromas once it's aired and has been open awhile. I've said it before; I can't get cali wine to work with food, this time pizza. I thought it was fool proof.

Again, I think I should buy stock in Seghesio. To date I have not had a Seghesio product I didn't love. Everyone experiences some 'proclivities' in their life in which one product causes them to become obsessed and with me it's Seghesio so allow my bias to show through.
This wine like the 07 Sonoma was fruit forwad, full bodied with dark berries, vanilla, oak with velvity tannins and just a hint of spice. The finish is lingering of honey which we love. I can see where some would suggest the wine being one dimensional in that it is sooooo well balanced that 'nothing' jumps out at you. I find I enjoy allowing each taste to linger and more and more character emerges.

Very dark in the glass, full body. On the nose and palate sweet jammy blackberries and black cherrries. There is some pepper, earth, and acid to help distract from the fact that this is candy-fied. An easy drinking Friday night slurper.

Plump, soft fruit: plum & black berry. A touch of cocoa. Soft tannins. Long, spicy finish. Delicious. A nice compliment for our take & bake pizza with heirloom tomato salad.

A: Deep purple
N: Blackcurrant with a jammy tendency, over ripe dark berries and vanilla so powerful it might just break my nose.

C: Dark red
N: Dark red fruit with a mature complexity displaying a nicely integrated oak tone and som minerals
P: Nice Acidity, good grip in the tannin, dry red fruit, some sweet tones in the finish.

Old vine zin called for Australian rack of lamb with pomery mustard, candied pecan and penko crust. Being a young wine, it was alcohol forward, at 16% but tasted cassis, sour cherries and licorice. If I could hold onto wine, this one would do well in a few years with polite company.
