Heidi's Gang: Wind Chill & Frostbite (Maison Margaux, Mpls): Medium red color. PNP, drank a glass over an hour plus. Drank this next to the '01 which started out big and brooding but eventually showed its beauty. But I will admit to being taked by the '07 right from the start. It's the pretty red fruits, the perfume and elegance that gets me every time in these classy '07 red burgs. Great acidity, tart red fruits, tart red berries, savory, earthy and filled with potpourri. Loved it, and the bottom of my glass proved it.

ESTG Year-End Tasting (Newcastle, WA): More mineral and austere than the 2001 tasted alongside at first impression. But it opened up more easily to savory, umami-laden core. Just silky and easy to enjoy. It has considerably less depth than the 2001, more to drink now or sooner.
Bottle breathe for 45 min, and then double decanted before serving. Deep and sexy nose with loads of strawberry with hint of raspberry and some mineral. The palate is full of density, sappy, fruit with chewy texture yet very silky. Medium/ long finishing. Fully opened up 1.5 hours in the glass, showing the full body, fruit and smooth texture. The nose is so nice for whole night. Apparently, this is nicer than the taste 2 years ago. Happy to try in another 2-3 years time

Great and bright ruby color. Complex nose of red berries, spice and quite floral. Bright in the palate as well with great balance between the fruit and acidity, lasting through the long finish. An excellent showing. I love the 2007 red burgundies.

Splash decanted an hour, but needed 2 hours to really open up. At 2 hours this shows dark red fruits, ripe tannin, very nice finish. At 3 hours it starts to close up again. I think this has a promising future but needs a slow-ox (like some other notes here seem to suggest) or just more time in a decanter than I was able to give it (and my last tasting of this also suggested 3 hours was not enough). But maybe at this price just realy more time in the cellar to properly enjoy (Meadows suggests 2027 in his last note? Maybe not that long but doesn't seem crazy to me). A-/A?

Decanted 3 hours. Again, at open, this shows promise, but then shuts down. With 3 hours it still is not fully open and at 4 hours it finally does start to express itself. Elegant, maybe not the power I remember of the glorious bottle 2002 I had last year, but very nice fruit and as this continued to evolve it feels like with more time (or possibly an even longer decant of 5+ hours - note for next time) this might improve. Decanted 90 minutes. This was very promising at open, with med-light red color and bright cherry fruit on the nose. Although needing to warm, the taste at decanting was also bright with tangy red fruit. But at 90 minutes it had shut down a bit. Never really emerged over the next 90 minutes of drinking with dinner. Not flawed, just probably caught it in a closed spot and will need to try more air next time? A-?

The Last Dance Magnum Dinner (The Krengels - Bannockburn IL): Magnum. Opened 3 hours before serving, but I wish I decanted. Complex array of fresh red, black and blue berries on the nose with equal variety on the palate. Floral, spice and meat hints come and go over the course of the hour in glass, but the textures remain bright and dancing. Still somewhat firm in the middle, this will be one of the longest living wines from the vintage. A 93-94 point wine today with 95 point potential.

Tasted in a blind pair with the 2007 Bonnes Mares. Light on its feet with the typical brown spectrum torrefaction aromas of Vogue. The nose was really nice here and the palate elegant. Solid, popular with the group. I kept part of my sample and it turned oxidative after a few hours only unfortunately.

Gorgeous ruby color. Reticent on the nose, with animal notes, red fruit, spice and floral notes. Delicate and balanced on the palate, yet more intense and burly that the Mugnier. Long finish. This has the bones to age.

Very fine nose of blue flowers, potpourri, incense and spice (aniseed and cloves). Complex but harmonious on the palette. Very elegant, classy, silky and weightless. This wine somehow conjures up for me, images of fine tapestry and beautiful lace...

Tasted blind. Quite a ripe palate here, Chocolate, red and blue fruit, underbrush. Good depth, pleasant, soft palate. A solid rather than an outstanding effort and therefore possible to replicate this experience for 150$ instead of 500+.

(Half-blind tasting Burg GC 2007) A bit mute nose at first. Reductive even after a 2 hour decant. But slowly reveals perfumed berry nose of violets, small strawberries and raspberries. Also a bit of blueberries, milk chocolate and liquorice spice. Not the greatest depth. Medium body palate. Very soft and silky. Chalk. Good balance between soft berry fruit, acid and tannins. Elegant and of medium length, but also a bit sour and tart in finish. My guess: de Vogue Musigny. Correct and unfortunately a bit of a dissapointment. But we have tasted de Vogue Musigny before, and so far it has failed to live up to its reputation. I still wait for a reprise of the great showing of the 99 back in 2012. Give this 5 more years to see if it impress more then.

Wine Dinner #162 - 2007 Grand Cru Burgundy (Urbane Restaurant, Brisbane): The last of seven 2007 Grand Crus the de Vogue Musigny fell a whisker short of the best. It showed a deep cherry colour with a nose of redcurrant, strawberry, cranberry and red and dark cherries with some spice and limestone characters. The palate had lovely shape and complexity of fruit with some minerality but not the drive and completeness on the finish expected at this level. Pretty and intriguing yes, profound no !
Montrachet and Musigny: Cherry, raspberry, strawberry and cranberry with violets and plum. The palate has a intense core of fruit, with good depth of flavour while retaining the brightness that you want to see when drinking young Pinot noir. Excellent length, with fine structure that will serve it well in the medium to long term. Very similar to a half bottle 6 years ago, this will blossom if it has time to do so.

Musigny Blind (Extra Space): Tasted blind. Drank from decanter over 3 hours. Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour. Legs. Nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of floral perfume, sweet oak spices, candied red fruit. Bloody youthful. On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol (13%), silky soft goose-feather-like light tannins, medium body. Medium flavour intensity, with flavours of sweet ripe red cherries that increased in concentration with more air, sweet spices, emerging fresh savoury earth, and some leather after 2+ hours. Long finish. Before the big reveal, I was guessing this was only about a Chambolle premier cru standard. On hindsight, I suppose this just goes to show a case of gross infanticide. No doubt, this has an extremely silky smooth mouth-feel that gets full marks in that department, and has so much sweet red fruit concentration that is bordering on seeming like New World Pinot fruit. Very good quality. Don't touch this till the time is right! My blind score is conservative.

Normally It takes a decade at least for a Vogue village to show and much longer for Musigny. However we are on a treat today as this 2007 Musigny is generous and seductive! Vibrant. This show the seductiveness of a Musigny, kirsch, sweet blue fruits, loaded with red and blue flower and complex sweet spices. Wow! Super refined sweet tannin, weightless yet w incredible grip and persistency. Pure and classy.

Rustic and dark, broody nose. Typical Vogue for me with Rhone notes, too dark and unfocused (I'm not a Vogue fan). The palate was better, but still lacked the sap and zing I would expect from a Musigny. I always prefer the Mugnier version of this terroir.

A long Sunday lunch at Noble Rot (Wellington, NZ): Darker, deeper colour than the Bonnes Mares. A beautiful but subdued, musky, spicy, dark fruited nose, with a top note of violets. Elegant with a little iron austerity, next to the more expressive Bonnes Mares. Pristine, pure, tight and young on palate. Full bodied and dark berried with that iron austerity at its core. Lovely acidity and good persistence and length. Unctuous and rich. I thought that the wine was, at present, a little monolithic. Tasters described the oak as a little "resiny" or "varnishy", while I thought it only a little over-prominent, yet to more fully integrate. People guessed the wine as a 2002, this is no skinny 2007. I thought it had all of the components and outstanding potential to be a great wine (hold for 5-7+ more years).

All but closed up with tight structured tannins not unlike a Bordeaux. Grippy red fruited and spicy berries too. A wine of power now and not showing the musigny softness yet. Maybe needs much more time.

In a word, finesse. This is a beautiful Burgundy. Nose of flint, wet stone and Asian spice, but all subtle. The flavor is silky with great acidity and superb length. I was impressed with the delicate, yet powerful nature of this wine. I have not always had great experiences with de Vogue Musigny when very old. Somehow they feel too tannic and hard to approach; this was also the case with a recent tasting of a 1988 de Vogue Les Amoureuses. I was expecting difficult tannins in the 2007, but instead I got a fruity, balanced, and long wine. I am considering tasting these wines in the 6-12 year range instead of waiting for the 15-20 year secondary development. There is something to be said for the vibrancy of youth.

Striking aromas of blood orrange, potpourri, plum / damson pit and ripe red cherry become darker & more expressive as the wine sits in the glass; the the palate, chalky, crunchy and succulent in texture. This irresistible red Burgundy is amazingly appealing and juicy already—an amazing achievement in this difficult vintage!

Killing baby Burgundies at the Playground (Playground , Santa Ana, CA): Light and elegant pure red fruit running down the mid palate with great minerality. There is this sappiness to the wine that runs on the back end but due to its youth hasn't really brought out the power on the palate. Needs time to pick up that typical Vogue Musigny power.

Popped and poured which was likely a mistake as a 2007 Vogue BM, which was decanted for several hours was much more approachable earlier in the evening. Rich dark dense nose of black berry, sweet strawberry, and wet soil elements. Dark sleek velvet mouthfeel, great purity of fruit, yet seems a bit closed and compacted. Shows breed and potential, yet largely ungiving. Hoping with time this will bloom, but hard to assess currently.

Popped and poured. Dense red and black cherry and berry on both the nose and palate. Not showing the level of spice I've found in other bottles of this. Lots of firm mineral stucture that will need some time to really come around. Great purity. A long, mineral based finish. Lots of potential here.

This is the best Vogue I've ever had. Ethereal, lacy, pretty and pretty close to Burgundy perfection. I kept reaching for more of this. None was left over at the end of evening. No signs of greeness that some 07s show. More Rousseau like than any Vogue I've ever had.

Unusual wine. Very French. Both pink and violet color. Elusive nose with earth and dried fruit, complex and interesting. Although Kathy thought it tasted young, I demurred though it tasted much older than just five. Not a floral, delicate, sweet style of Musigny, this de Vogue was a mixture of many different Burgundies, like a hypothetical blend of Volnay, Beaune, Morey St Denis and Corton. I find it fascinating. Too bad the finish was a little sour or it would have been even better.

The 2007 Vogue Bonnes Mares was very approachable a couple weeks back, so I decided to try the Musigny tonight. Decanted for roughly 5 hours before dinner and then consumed over the course of about 2 hours. From the second the cork was pulled and it was poured into the decanted, fragrant bright red fruit and and soared from the decanter. The palate had firm fruit right upon opening. Each time I went over to taste throughout the afternoon before dinner, the palate became ever so slightly more giving. By the time I sat down to dinner, the aromatics had gained in intensity and exhibited dark red cherry, dark flowers, crushed stone, and bits of cinnamon and clove. The palate, while pretty fruit forward, had a certain firmness to it. Beautiful red fruits on the palate with the same spices throughout the long finish. Great grip to the wine. While it was fantastic, it is much further from being ready than the Bonnes Mares was.

Knightsbridge Burgundy Tasting: New Releases (Northbrook, IL): Wine tasting. Red cherry, black cherry and really charming spice on the nose. Palate shows same fruit profile but not very accessible for now. Lots of tannin and acidity, more than I'm finding in other 2007s, but of course this is Vogue Musigny, not just any other 2007. Really impressive finish brings everything together, but this is the rare 2007 that really will require lots of time and patience.

Knightsbridge's New Release Burgundy Tasting (Knightsbridge, Northbrook IL): nose: wow, what a nose. Immense purity and depth just flow from the glass with succulent and vibrant tones of tart cherries, spice tones, loads of red florals, red currants, and slight bits of earth round everything out. A very sensual nose that welcomes you in with a soft touch
taste: utterly beautiful and etheral feeling on the palate that just seems to skim across. Silky and elegant with great depth and purity and utter stunning tones of red cherries, all sorts of red and purple florals, red currants, red fruits, and sweet hints of spices. medium/high acidity really lets itself be known on the palate showing off its youth, but still has a caressing state to it
overall: Hard to believe, but this can and will get better. There is really good layering already and the wine just possesses this real warm embrace that can also blow you away. This is a real etheral wine right now, but can easily turn into a mind bending wine. It will need the requisite time, but a patient hand will be needed as there is something extremely special in this bottle

2018 Villa d’Este Wine Symposium – Kelly, RJ, Justin and Kevin's excellent adventure; 11/7/2018-11/11/2018 (Villa D’este, Lake Como): Medium expressive nose displaying very ripe black fruit, blackberry jam, black cherry, caramel, milk chocolate, a hint of stem and earth. Very good concentration, generous but not finely layered black fruit, good acidity and mineral, and a medium to long ripe black fruit driven finish. It lacks the finesse of great Musigny.

A bit mute nose at first.

Palate shows same fruit profile but not very accessible for now. Lots of tannin and acidity, more than I'm finding in other 2007s, but of course this is Vogue Musigny, not just any other 2007.
