Drank this at Kai Garden for a wine dinner with my wine mates. Theme of the evening: A wine to end the year with.
Gold in colour with a beautiful aromatic nose filled with honey, tangerines, lime, and fresh minerals. The sweetness and acidity are in delicate balance , delivering perfect harmony and gastronomical excellence.

Golden color. Pear and honey on the nose. Amazingly light in the mouth. But then the flavors coming pouring out. More pear, honey and stone. This is only just coming into its own and will get better. The sugar is light but present. Great acidity. Great precision. Wonderful wine.

Still a young wine with plenty of sugar still left here. It's a classic Riesling with very good definition, precision and acidity that keeps everything in place. In a good spot, but still more to come, I think. 93+ point #From RAL #FogheadInTheGarden

4th Saturday Brown Bagger (Eagle Brook CC): I had somewhat recently turned a couple of folks in the group on to the joys of riesling, and Dönnhoff in particular, so I thought it would be fun to put it in the double blind warm ups for the group. I poured it off into and empty cab bottle, bagged it up with the others and hid the real bottle. Deep color. Terrific bouquet of ripe pear, petrol, slate and stone fruits. Has a really nice weight on the palate with plenty of ripe stone fruit and balancing acidity. Love me some Dönnhoff. This is drinking very well right now- I’ll have a hard time keeping my hands off our last bottle.

Still very youthful, pale lemon yellow color. Seductive, sweet and fragrant nose with aromas of lemon marmalade, some perfumed floral tones, a little bit of beeswax, light notes of hay, a spicy hint ripe red apple and a touch of saffron. The wine is quite light-bodied and weightless on the palate, starting off as medium-sweet, then the acidity kicks in and cuts off the majority of sweetness from the residual sugar in an instant. Focused, bright flavors of ripe citrus fruits, freshly pressed farmhouse apple juice, some steely minerality, a little bit of fresh pineapple, light floral notes of apple blossom and a hint of ripe clementine. Despite its relatively light body, the wine shows great intensity and sense of structure, thanks to its racy acidity. The bright, acid-driven finish segues into an off-dry aftertaste of ripe red apples, some fresh orange, a little bit of beeswax, light steely mineral tones, a hint of pineapple and a touch of juicy clementine.
A very nice, structured and still slightly restrained yet not at all closed Spätlese. Not a bold, hedonistic Riesling, but not too lean, tightly-wound and austere either. Very true to the producer and the genre of Nahe Spätlese. Coming across still very youthful despite its 12 years of age, so I can imagine this will continue to improve for another dozen of years, if not longer, and keep good for way longer than that. Promising stuff, expect the score to go up over the years.

Pineapple, citrus, apple, some exotic fruit and slight hay and wood on the nose. The medium-sweet palate adds creaminess, more apple and exotic fruit, as well as decent acidity. Long finish with apple and acids, and with an extended aftertaste. Beautiful and very enjoyable, with hedonistic creamy fruit and fifty shades of apple, but with enough layers and acids to keep things balanced, and to make it also work with food. Entering now maturity and certainly drinking well now with some budding age-driven complexity, but will keep and probably still improve with time.

Marvelous again. This time (for a first) I get a distinct taste of bing cherries mid palate, down to a hint of cherry skins on the long finish. Lovely, paired with Spicy duck noodles from Thai Kitchen.

Maturing, showing sweet (Auslese level) and slightly caramelized notes, honeydew melon, and pineapple. Lingering, just enough acidity to keep it afloat. Very nice now and I think it’s at peak. Drink up over the next couple of years.

Opened for a virtual "cocktail hour" with a dear friend, and it's hard to express how well this showed. Precise delineation, harmonious fruit mellowing into early maturity, deep, bracing acidity, and a long, long finish describe the experience, but do not do it justice. Sometimes a wine is in a special place. This bottle was there - more than just a wine, but a sublime expression of site, as molded by a mindful producer.

Sweet fragrant nose with white flowers, honey, kiwi, apple. Moderately sweet palate with more tart apple, honey, lemon and a crisp tart finish. Well balanced and good length. Very enjoyable Spätlese in a good place, but lacking a bit of the depth and complexity I’ve seen in the best examples. Still, opening up and deepening as it warmed up.

Translucent yellow, with strong aromas of Stayman Winesap Apple along with hints of peach. The sip glides into the mouth on runners of bright acidity and residual sugar. The swallow is a well integrated chorus of all that came before, culminating in a long, juicy, and delicious aftertaste. Overall, an excellent example of how a master winemaker gets superb Spatlese from the Niederhauser Hermannshohle Vineyard in the Nahe region of Germany.

At Adrian's Hermannshoehle tasting. This was a disappointment for me and hard to drink - I loved this when this came out, but now it's awkward with the fruit not showing clearly, and lots of sulfury reduction I didn't experience on release.

Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Spätlese mini vertical (Chicago, IL): #12-09, 8.5% abv. Really reduced and a little stinky (perhaps a Joh. Jos. Prüm collaboration?). We threw this one in a decanter because it was the tightest and most ornery of all the wines tonight. I wasn't particularly thrilled with this one, since it seemed to show far more green and leafy notes than any of the other wines. Despite that, there was still some of that floating, ethereal lightness here that I love. This strikes me just as a leaner, less giving wine. I'm not too excited about this vintage, and it's hard to reconcile this with CCT's and Salil's notes from release.

Glass: Zalto Universal Clear, medium golden color. Clean, medium intense, developing nose with lots of ripe yellow fruit, a bit musty notes, fine crushed stones, herbs and some unidentifiable notes (yeast?). Good, but not as exciting as its dry brother. Off-dry, medium+, lively acidity. Low alcohol, 8,5% abv. Fine crushed stones, salt, ripe yellow fruit, citrus on the palate. Creamy mouthfeel, very good balance, great tension and pressure. Long, lingering and mouthwatering finish. Has a long live ahead, at least another decade and also some potential. 92+

Joy in a glass! Great notes, great structure, and still showing plenty of freshness – an excellent showing from a Donnhoff staple (not that I’d expect any less!). The nose provided an immediate, intense hit of ripe peach/gala apple, apricot, melon, papaya, and banana; no subtlety there, and that’s not a complaint. This was followed closely by white pepper and honey, as well as a pleasant creaminess with vanilla and coconut undertones. The palate was a tad less intense, but the notes stayed more or less consistent – fruits were a bit fresher, while the wine showed more of a mineral streak and floral hints. All of this was kept in check by powerful, but well integrated acidity. Despite drinking well now, the slight inconsistency between the nose and palate indicate that it still needs further development – at some point down the road the two will meet up entirely and this wine will absolutely sing! 94+

Tasted blind. Very Donnhoff-like, quite sweet for a spatlese. Like many Donnhoff's, this is ready now but can be enjoyed over the next 5-10 years, depending on how mellow you like your Rieslings. Very nice balance hear, pronounced acidity but good pineapple fruit that balances it.

What a nice wine. The beauty about this Riesling is the perfect balance of minerals, sweetness, acidity and elegance. Aromas of honey, apricots and quinces but all is so light. Amazing quality that reminds more of an Auslese than a Spätlese. Great wine that will last for a long time.

Worldwide Chards plus Rieslings (Edina Country Club): Light gold color. Drank 1 glass over 60 minutes. This was disappointing given the previous bottle's showing. This was way sweet, and for me, very cloying. Nice on the nose, very ripe, pineapple, peach, light petrol on the nose and palate, grapefruit, lychee and minerals. Seemed to lack the acid tonight to balance that sweetness. It did improve as it got warmer. This needs a couple years.

Worldwide Whites (Edina Country Club, MN): This wine needed to warm up to room temp to reveal much. Subtle wine with citrus, apple and lemon. A bit sweet and much more so than the 05 Loosen UW Auslese. Not nearly as good as previous times. Hold.

Consumed over a period of four days. The wine offered lemon, lime, peach, apricot, pineapple and a hint of petrol on the nose. On the slightly spicy palate the light- to medium-bodied Spätlese Riesling showed minerals, lemon, lime, lemon effervescent powder, some pineapple and a mild tea component, paired with high acidity, medium-level sweetness and a long lasting aftertaste.
I opened this bottle too soon as the wine seemed to be in a slightly awkward phase. The slightly sharp acidity seemed off the chart compared to the fruit and residual sugar, particularly on day one. I expect the wine to show even better in a year or two and it might then also merit a higher score.

Yellow gold. Pop & pour. The nose is loaded with stone & citrus fruit showing excellent depth & allure. Medium bodied as it took on air with excellent intensity. This is in a deliciously fruity youthful stage of life. Fleshy peach & apricot gives way to tart, bright crisp citrus on the mid palate. Showing a highly acidic cut & a drying refreshing mouthfeel. Great length. Delicious.

Worldwide Whites (Edina Country Club): Pale gold, slightly green color, dilute cat urine. P&P, drank 2 glasses over 1.5hrs. Nose has grapefruit, apricot, fusil, white florwers, a bit tropical, . The palate has pear, apricot, elegant, smooth, still primary, , tart, lemon, great balance, nice acid, mildly sweet but offset well. Stellar wine. My and group #2 WOTN.

Taste: A classic kabinett style of riesling. Straddling between the just starting to shed the fruits of a young riesling but just haven't started developing the secondary notes in older rieslings. Long finish with notes of figs and flowers. Very good riesling. One of my fave for the evening.

Quite mute upon opening, became somewhat more expressive through the evening, and even more so the next day. Citrus, wild flowers and honey. A very easy going wine slightly on the sweet side of Spätlese, medium body, intensity and length, lacks complexity, but still very young.

A perfectly serviceable, though not remarkable, Spatlese. Rather one-dimensional, with notes of lemon predominating on the palate. Refreshing quaff, but not terribly complex or interesting, and certainly nothing to chase after. The 2007 Rieslings were in general much better.

I was tempted to say "monumental" and give it a 96 or 97 this time around, but stuck with 95 since it's really a "simple" thing - the big Acid/Sweet balance - that really bowls me over. Over time, more complexity will come and we'll see about the "numbers" then. For now, this is just a mouth-watering wine.

"Drink between 2015 and 2040" - WHAT? This is *so good* right now... Perhaps it really is too young - I thought the nose was restrained, though floral, perfumey, and enticing. Swirling the wine in a glass, I've never seen such beauty - it foreshadows how it feels in your mouth. My first taste: "WOW this is the best ever!" It's sweet, and I was bowled over by the fruit - I'll try to restrain myself as far as waxing poetic, but you're instantly transported to one of those idyllic tropical scenes.
There is a dancing acidity for balance, and a mineral edge that comes in after a bit. Best German wine I've ever had, very good Quality-to-Price-Ratio. This is why people drink German Rieslings.

The color is bright yellow lemon. The nose is intense and clean, very rich, with sweet caramelized pineapple, perfectly mixed with mineral aromas of hot stone, petrol, discreet smoke, Asian spices, ripe apple and pear. The taste is full body, rich, quite unctuous but lifted by a high, almost sparkling, acidity. The acidity gives great balance to the sensation of sweetness. There are pure flavors of pineapple, lime, hot rocks, peach and plenty of tropical fruits. Unbelievable texture, concentration and balance in this wine. The finish is long and intense, off dry, with a mineral pineapple aftertaste. Incredible balance between the sweetness in the mouth and the off dryness in the aftertaste. 94+ points

Well, my favorite dirt in this part of the world. I wrote "The incredible lightness of being" as my first words on my TN. Beautiful, effortless, transparent and terribly deep. Herr Doennhoff said that he likes his Riesling to drink like mineral water. This wine is the embodiment of that goal. Great freshness, perfectly melded RS and acid. Fantastic!!! 97pts.

The man, the myth, the Legend. Tasting with Helmut Doennhoff. (Weingut Doennhoff): Another winner. Ranks right alongside the Oberhaeuser Bruecke, but not quite at the same level as the Kupfergrube Spaetlese for me. It showed rounder and fruitier than the other two Spaetlesen, but showed its tropical fruit very well along with some honey and even doughy notes.

Hold.

Donnhoff Riesling Masterclass, with Cornelius Donnhoff (Handford Wines, London): This is their highest rated vineyard and 60yr+ vines. 2008 was a cool vintage to the level they did not produce any ausleses. Petrolly nose here, good acidity and balance. Good wine with depth and maybe the . 90ish

Peaches and citrus. Great acidity, chiseled fruit, moderate sweetness. Long finish. As expected, superb with slow-cooked lamb with Indian spices and hot chillies. But was hoping to sense more complexity and development.

Drank over three days. Tropical fruit, juicy mouth feel, medium acidity, very seamless. Petrol aromas by day 3. Great Donnhoff but I'm not sure I'll pay up for the Niederhauser Hermannshohle in the future.

A mixed bag of Whites (Edina Country Club): Super light in color, almost clear. Apricots, floral, peaches and super balanced. A touch of sweetness but this should really age into an amazing wine in a decade or enjoy right now!

Dönnhoff Tasting with Helmut Dönnhoff (Taberna Wine Bar, Singapore): Gentle with good core of minerality. Balanced with enough tension to make it interesting. A moreish wine which you can gulp down glass after glass. A quiet and serious wine.

Tasting of Weingut Hermann Donhoff Wines (Taberna): Nose: At this point the nose was rather subtle and tight without revealing much.

Dinner with Helmut and Gaby Donnhoff (Herbert Samuel restaurant, Tel Aviv): Very elegant. Notes of lychee and baby powder. Linear and chalky. Great now, and I'm not sure it's the kind of wine I'd like to age for a long time.
