Ma dernière bouteille et la meilleure !! Italian Night in Jax (La Cena): My slight favorite between this and a 97 Ornellaia but both are to me just excellent wines. This still always reminds me of our stop right before the visit where we drove the two mins it took to get to the sea. You can taste that in the wine. Just a touch of brine and seashell along with everything else. Lovely wine. Wish we had more of it.

This was a big surprise as it seemed that the wine had put on some "weight" over the last ten years. The remaining fruit is compact and sweet and there are some clear aged notes but still with plenty of freshness. Tannins are nicely polished and the wine is very drinkable.

This is a lovely vintage with good ripeness and a nice lifted note from the Cab Franc. Elegant and refined but lacking complexity and interest on the finish. Again, for my palate, this does nothing to dissuade me from preferring to drink Sassicaia in its first 10 years of life.

Whenever I open a bottle of a legendary wine from my cellar for the first time, I feel apprehension lest it underperforms. This bottle, however, lived up fully to the estate's reputation and was the perfect accompaniment for Easter lamb. Colour was limpid with very little bricking at the rim. The nose was discreet but fine with notes of ripe berry fruit and hints of rose petal which I don't recall before in a left bank style Bordeaux blend. The palate was medium bodied, linear shaped and harmonious with quite some underlying roundness and silky texture and showed similar fruit and aromas as the nose. Acids were mouth-wateringly fresh but perfectly integrated except after a mouthful of sweetish spring vegetables which brought them forward. Tannins were riper and more resolved than with most Bordeaux of the same vintage and supported well the decently long finish. A lovely elegant bottle. Excellent.

Enjoy this magnificent wine !!

This was not showing well, and had high acid, a bit thinner mouthfeel, old musty earth tones (but not faulty), Bordeaux underbrush, forest floor, wet earth, rotting log. Just paled in comparison to the others and just seemed a bit lacking to me. Guessed Bordeaux blend Super-T. Not sure why this one 3rd place over all. DD at Cotzen's.

In the glass is a deep ruby colour with a grenade nail. Intense aromas of ripe red fruits, wet earth and on the finish a note of after eight (mint chocolate). Elegant and not too persistent tannins.

MD’s Birthday Wine Dinner @ ZYX: MD’s Sassicaia vertical of 1995, 1999, 2003, 2004 plus my 2001 (what a coincidence) - ranking from top: 2003, 1995, 2001, 2004, 1999. Initial nose of aged Bordeaux and honey. Red fruits, raspberries, eucalyptus, truffles, tobacco leaves, spices, saffron, terroir. Very long mint leaf finish. Elegant with silky tannins. Harmonious and in a great place now. This is in my lane - very impressed. Really an eye opener for Sassicaias tonight.

Transparent ruby, and quite green/vegetal--I'd almost compare this character to a cooler-vintage Leoville Barton, though it's too polished to remind me of Loire. Red fruit with a touch of sickly character. Lightweight and persistent.

Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia Masterclass with Greg Sherwood MW (Handford Wines, London): Sweet, light cooked feel on the nose, light leather and tobacco. Tasted blind: Nose of mint, coffee and red berries. Very elegant wine, one could almost say a bit short. But the sirupy style and the subtle complexity makes this a nice Sassicaia. My best "old" Sassicaia so far. Drink - 2018.

Two-hour decant. Lots of layers on all dimensions: color, nose and palate. Cherry red color and showing a little oxidation at the rim. Roasted peppers, cherries and red berries (in the background), white chocolate and leather (with a little dried sage) on the nose. Sour cherries, strawberry rhubarb pie, orange bitters and tea on the palate. Showed sweeter as it opened it. Very fine tannins. A bit astringent. Medium bodied. Drink now.
One additional note: I vacuum sealed and refrigerated overnight. On day two the palate showed mostly plum and less layering. Definitely drink any you have cellared now.

Predominant flavor is a shifting balance between a cherry and plum tastes, with the later predominating early and the former later on. The wine did not fade so I think it is still aging well although I may have not gotten it at its peak. There are touches of pepper and earthy tones, although only the pepper shines through at the end No need to decant. Moderate to long body and duration. Stands up to food well and can even overcome "lighter" meats like chicken.

Sassicaia! (Roma - Hilton Cavalieri): The ripening of the grapes in 1995 was good. Nice ruby red. Complex at nose: crispy mature red fruits, leather and balsamic hints. Velvety glicerin in mouth, with an integrated tannins, still a bit astringent. Not my favourite, was the best for the class. ****

I have had this bottle for 10 years, having bought it at Berry Bros. in London following a tasting. It definitely needs to be decanted for 45 mins. before drinking. It is probably a bit past its peak, but still displays subtle flavor and texture on the palate. It did not hold up well to a heavy Italian meal, but would be better sipped with an appetizer or with no food at all.

Sunday afternoon at the Sampler (The Sampler, South Ken, London): Brownish colour. In general feels past its peak and although we need to discount for bottle variation this felt a bit overly sweet on the palate and sort of tails lightly in the end. Lost its vibrancy. Gorgeous aromatics; very Bordeaux like with a perfume of cigar smoke, leather, graphite and earth around rich dark fruited flavours. There's tremendous depth, richness and power here, at the same time there's a sense of incredible elegance and finesse with all the flavour and structural components in perfect balance as a seamless whole. Stunning.

Medium ruby with some minimal hints of age on the color. A flat out beautiful nose. Cassis, stony fruits, very floral, with some baking chocolate and asian spice in he background. Medium to full bodied and extremely well balanced. Great midpalate texture, not heavy but everything in order. Dense yet not heavy, with more perfumey sweetness on the mouthfeel that I seem to get in Ital-Bordeaux blends form this area. Some choco-cherry notes, and fine minerality. Long and delicious on the back end. Lovely and at early peak and tons of time in hand. Beautiful 94 pts.

BirDungy opened this because he heard reports that there were a bunch of fake '95 Sassys proliferating around London and he wanted to make sure his bottles were the real deal. He can rest easy. This was a bruiser that is years away from revealing its tightly wound core. We tasted over the course of three hours and it its heft and weight remained intact. Smoky chocolate notes on the nose. Primary flavor of roasted plums and a hint of fennel on the palate. Long chewy finish. Hold for at least another 5 years.

I was a bit suprised by this wine! The last bottle I had was about 2 years ago and I was not impressed. It was well balanced with flavors of sweet cassis. Maybe I have had too many big CA cabs recently as it was nice to drink a wine that work so well with food. Mature - I would drink up over the next 5 years as I believe it will start to decline after that.

Great, Great Wines With the Boys (Vancouver): A very smoky nose. Sweet cassis on the palate balanced nicely by some green pepper. A nice Bordeaux-like profile. Lovely medium body with well-integrated tannin. Perhaps this was a tough night for this soldier, but it was overshadowed by the other bottles on the table - lost in the excitement. Perhaps the finer style of this wine would lend itself better to a full evening over a relaxed dinner.

Dinner at La Zie with the NYC crew (New York, NY): The nose here is bright with a barrique and red-fruit profile, cedary. The palate is a bit tough and lean at first with impressive acidity, but it does open up very nicely. Whereas the 1995 Ornellaia is nicely unwound and ready to drink, the 1995 Sassicaia seems to need a lot of time still.

Wine tasting. Perhaps lost in the company of more complex wines, this didn't stand out or impress today. Already seeming long-in-the-tooth given fruit level and concentration vs. still firm tannins. Shows more age without the added charming complexity I expect from Sassicaia, like the 1997 also tasted today.

bottle was shot---nothing left; decanted for an hour before serving and had to re-pour another wine as this one was unacceptable.

Beautiful and soft bouquet with still fruit some earthy impressions and luxurious oak. The tannin is completely ready in this soft and elegant wine with good acidity, complexity and a long finish. Ready now and the next 3 - 5 years.

Producer Tasting. Decanted 1 hour? Brick rim with dark red core. Nose of delicate potpourri of red fruits, wild strawberry, coffee beans. It had a strange herbaceous (mature capsicum, young green olive) taste. Long and lingering finish. Very interesting wine. Not sure if slightly past it's peak?

Sunday afternoon at the Sampler (The Sampler, South Ken, London): Brownish colour. In general feels past its peak and although we need to discount for bottle variation this felt a bit overly sweet on the palate and sort of tails lightly in the end. Lost its vibrancy. Still a good enough bottle but we expected a lot more. 91

Unexpectedly delicate, elegant, and restrained--I had imagined that a Super Tuscan Cab would be more of a bruiser. Didn't take detailed notes but this was definitely well-balanced.

Berserkfest weekend (Leo's): An absolutely captivating nose of cherry, cedar, leather, and herbs. Very refined, plush mouthfeel, black cherry and raspberry. Lots of very fine tannin. Yum!

Stunning.

NOV 09 Deep ruby. Cassis, vanilla, spices, dark fruits, intense and ripe nose, layered. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, dark fruits, vanilla, blackberries and raspberries, layered and nuanced, still young. Impressive. 96

Complex, feminin wine. A little more light in the mouth than the nose promissed - but hold an elegant feminin style. Long taste.

Occasional tasting group: A mixed set; mostly Bordeaux (blends). (@ PVa): Beautiful bouquet with cassis and black forest fruits and luxurious oak. Same in the juicy taste. Firm and supple tannin, good bitterness. Elegant and complex wine.

Wine-Pages.com Italian Wines Offline (Harts Restaurant, Nottingham): The nose some black cherry and blackcurrant fruit with a slight mushroomy note and some green vegetal notes. There's a richness on the palate, which feels fairly direct. Quite sweet fruit. Good acidity. But it lacks depth a bit. Good tannins on the finish.

G7 (Pat): Tastes of blackberries and earth. Well balanced with a soft finish. Lacking the complexity and elegance of the other wines. The weakest wine of the flight.

i read many notes indicating that this wine needs time. no. it's just not that good, and no time in the cellar is going to rescue it. decanted. it's a good wine, but lacks the proverbial complexity to make it outstanding. too much oak. not a wine i would seek out.

Tasted at blind horizontal 1995 Super Tuscan tasting at the Bungalo. Opaque purple with red rim. Moderately intense nose of vanilla and cherry. Hugely tannic wine, with simple berry and plum flavors. Medium, astringent finish. Needs time.
