While we sacrificed a bottle this just three months ago, it was with another visit. Nothing different about the color. It continues to be “somewhere between maroon and ruby; not opaque.” But the flavor profile deepened and broadened, likely due to decanting. The nose offered rich cassis, plum, smoke, lavender, a touch of iodine, smoked meats, and coffee. Very much the same on the palate but deep and distinct flavors, with each note etched clearly and cleanly. The coffee on the finish goes forever. The silky mouthfeel is smooth and balanced. No shortness on the finish at all. Decanting this wine made all the difference. Just a skid of sediment. 13% alc. With duck confit in mushroom sauce. 09.30.23. Highly Recommended.

The color is a bit light … somewhere between maroon and ruby; not opaque. The nose and palate offer up cassis, blackberry, plum, smoke, smoked meats, rosemary, and iodine. The mouthfeel is full bodied. The smokiness of the grilled bison pairs quite well with the smokiness of the wine. The rosemary adds an interesting component that marries well with the dish as well. The heft of the mouthfeel is not “heavy” but deftly balanced with every other aspect of the wine. The finish is surprisingly somewhat short. Absolutely no sediment. 13% alc. With grilled bison sirloins wrapped in bacon; a tremendous pairing. 06.10.23. Recommended but leaning toward Highly Recommended.

Rich, deep colour. Aromas jump out of glass/decanter - rich, ripe redcurrants and raspberries. Intense fruit on palate coupled with smokey/toasty notes. Mature. To be drunk. Soft, fine tannins. Fresh acidity. Long finish.

Decanted off of light sediment - breathed 1 hour, then returned to the original bottle to take to Flavours Restaurant. Deep red with a tawny hue at the edge. Smoky meats, bacon, heavy black ground pepper, nice tart red fruits on the nose with a very nice floral component. Powerful and energetic palate of tart fruit, earthy tannins; sweet but bone dry. Intense earthy wine that needs food, esp. red meat. Very long but a bit rough on the finish. Drink up 2020-2021.

We tasted this after a 3-hour decant, then rebottling and refrigerating for another 2 hours.
It was a classic Northern Rhone, splendid, all the more so because it's only 13% alcohol, a big wine with a restrained kick. The acidity and tannins were at a perfect level; there were flavors and aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant, olive brine, flowers, and light toasty oak. Drinking at peak now for primary flavors. If you want tertiary characteristics, these are quite some time off yet.
Highly recommended. Great QPR @ $45 from Westgate (back in 2014).

Hugely aromatic nose loaded with roasted black cherries and grilled herb switches such as rosemary, thyme and tarragon. Medium-full bodied and supple. This is loaded for bear! Still plenty of fruit, a weird, Syrah funk and more charred herbs! WOWZA. Drink Now-2029 93

Very impressive Cote Rotie. First time I have had this wine. Very pure, text book Syrah. Rich and meaty, with mouthfilling grip and long finish. I would try again in 2-3 years. Lots of stuffing.

Popped and poured. This is a medium red wine with virtually no sediment before the very end of the bottle. On the nose, I get smoke, pepper, and olive -- this is a classic nose for the appellation. In the mouth, this is a mid-weight wine, but one that is very lively with great acid and raspberry flavors. The finish is crisp, with acid lingering on. Overall, this is ready now and very yummy. Add some food! A very nice wine for the money. 92 points.

One of this years biggest let downs. Saint Cosme makes some great Gigondas so I could only assume their Cote Rotie would be stellar. Unfortunately not. Popped and poured, then eventually decanted and sipped over a 3 hour period. None of this helped.
A beautiful nose dominated by meat on a smokey BBQ but that eventually blew off. The palate was extremely flabby. A bit of fruit at the front but missing mid palate and a finish.

Monthly Tasting Group EEE #046; Côte Rôti (@ JWS): Beautiful and complex bouquet with red and dark berry fruits, minerals, iron, leather tobacco, animals and bacon. On the palate ripe dark berries, minerals and metal, some earthy flavors, bacon, good and juicy acidity, firm and round slightly drying tannin with a good bite. Some good bitterness. Good length. Overall a beautiful wine which will benefit with some more ageing. Around 2019+?

Part of an Old World/New World wine night.....Great bottle....Sweet dark dark red fruit on the nose and palate, lovely silky smooth finish with low alcohol, very mellow tannins and great balance. Like review from JNewmann77, handful of us also though could be a bottle from Central Coast of CA....Really, really liked this bottle.

The fruit is receding now, subtle but very complex. The wine still possesses generous acidity and tannins, along with some tobacco, oak and caramel flavors, and a distinctly Cote-Rotie nose. It worked well with our rare grilled ribeye.
The tertiary flavors are only starting to emerge. I think I'll sit on my remaining bottles for a couple of years.

Riper example of Cote Rotie from a warm vintage with lots of dark berry fruits, bacon fat, floral scents and perfume notes. The palate is rich and ripe with loads of fruit, ripe tannins. Very tasty, but I almost thought this was a new world wine when I first tasted it.

Importer tasting: This will be one tasting note for the 2004, 2007, 2009 and 2012. The grapes for this wine are not destemmed and the wine ages for 12 months in 40% new oak and 60% in one year old barrels. In the bouquet all vintages are more or less the same and show red and dark berries, minerals, blood, bacon, pepper and are rustic. Especially the 2007 and 2009 also have some sweet impressions in the nose and of course the 2004 shows some development. On the palate the wines have the same impressions as in the bouquet as well as some iron. In the 2012 the minerals are quite up front and the wine is more tight than the 2009 and also lighter. It has good acidity and sticky tannin. The 2009 has a pleasant touch of sweetness which is beautifully balanced by good acidity, also a lot of minerals and more smooth tannin than the 2012. The 2007 has mainly dark fruits, also minerals and iron as well as some licorice. A touch of sweetness, firm acidity and good tannin. The 2004 is mature now and also shows some herbs, a nice balance between acidity and sweetness and soft tannin. Concluding: 2012: Elegant wine, still too young. Wait until 2018 and drink until 2024+? 91 2009: Beautiful and tasty wine. Early maturity now, but can last another decade. 92 2007: Beautifully structured wine, showing what it has. Ready now and approx. until 2020. 91 2004: A fairly light and elegant style, completely ready now and the next few years. 90

Tasted blind. Textbook Cote Rotie. All 7 tasters at the table knew where we were at. Only a couple thought another region of the Northern Rhone. Iron, blood, bacon, blueberries, and tons of granite. Silky, mouth filling, yet elegant. Decanted 2 hours prior to drinking. Just so happened to have another Cote Rotie that evening tasted blind as well. 2005 Guigal D'Ampuis. The Guigal didn't hold a candle to this wine this night. (I find that often the case with D'Ampuis. Perennial underachiever.) Wonderful example of negociant wine done right. Bravo!

Decanted for an hour. Initial barnyard and forest floor funk blew off, revealing licorice, roasted meat and black fruit aromas. Crispy bacon, along with red and black fruits across a smooth finish. No rough edges or aggressive tannins. In a really nice place, and continuing to evolve every 30 mins or so, which makes each glass a good bit of fun. High QPR a bonus-- this would be just as nice at 2X the price. L. Barruol, I am an admirer...

Friday Night Double Blind Semi-Mondo $80+ (Bin 75): Deep blackish purple core with light purple rim; slight candy, black pepper, perfumed, violets, sexy, peppered beef, fresh, smells delicious, pre-tapenade; very fresh and tasty, sexy though there is a slight heaviness probably from Louis' use of the whole cluster; nailed it.

Forward in style, lushly textured and with a complex set of aromatics set off by licorice, vanilla, black cherry liqueur, jam, pepper and fresh herbs, this is one of the few remaining value wines from Cote Rotie.

Woof! Packed full of intense Cote Rotie characteristics - all turned up to 11 and stuck into a glass. Grilled meat, raspberry, pepper, black fruit and dense, powerful fruit. Despite the power, this has balance - yes, definitely get some more of these for the cellar.

Deep purple black almost to rim; at first the nose was out of place amongst the CDPs and the 30% new oak used initially coming off as plush, overoaked, vanilla, and cocoa, but after 45 minutes this wine shed the oak and emerged as a classic Northern Rhone Syrah with sour dark berries, iron ore, and cracked black pepper; delicious on the palate with a certain plushness, fine grained tannin and rich mouthfeel, good acid and lingering minerality; a pleasure to drink.
Dark color with little color change; olive, pepper, juicy dark fruit, rust, some creamy oak is there but not distracting. Delicious syrah that fooled nobody at the table as Northern Rhone. In a great drinking window as the secondary notes have already developed. Need to get more.

PHMG WAG: the '09 Northern Rhones (Casa Lyon): This is a wow wine. Still opaque purple in color, this wine has an open nose of blackberry jam, spice, and pepper. The balance and depth are outstanding. Still great overnight w/o gas. Going to be amazing in 3-5 years.

Purplish-red color. Light-medium body. Lots of metallic earth, florals, and red berry flavors. The wine shows finesse and delicacy as well as some robust strength. Bewitching complexity; it continues to evolve over the course of several hours (let it decant for at least two) always showing more facets of itself. There is some bitter tannic bite, so some time in the cellar would only help. Distinctive, outstanding wine.

PHMG WAG: Tour de France 2014 (Chateau Lyon): Didn't blow me away like in 6/12, but this bottle was still outstanding. Black fruit, spice, pepper, and earth all in good depth and length. Made me want to have some more syrahs, perhaps in an upcoming event...

Friday Night Double Blind Tasting $40+ (Bin 75): Dark reddish purple with lighter rim; velvet on the nose, vanilla from good French oak, black pepper, dense but fresh, Syrah, granite...nailed it again!

Quite good. Floral, dark fruit, and smoky minerality on the nose. Tannins are present to provide good structure. Finishes well. Definitely has years to improve.

Dark reddish purple with lighter rim; black pepper, a hint of vanilla, slight bramble on the palate, denser mouthfeel; very tasty and good as always.

Aromas of stalks and black pepper. Quite generous fruit but nice spiciness. Smooth but drying.

Delicate and sure-footed at the start. A nice shoulder-season CR. I don't see this having long term appreciation though. 50/5/12/16/5

Awesome nose - stinky, delicious, red, spicy, peppery, slightly unresolved oak. Mineral.
