  • Decanted 2 hrs. Full ruby to deep garnet. Gorgeous nose, rich with Madeira cake. Classic cedar and cigar box aromas cut through with a lovely Cab Franc herbal line. Really quite complex and engaging. Downright gorgeous in fact. A lovely cool line to the dark red fruit with a spice and fruitcake top note. Cheval-like. Amazed this is 14.5abv — just so smooth and balanced. A truly lovely bottle. ****

  • A great vertical tasting at Wine professionals in Amsterdam
    from 2001-2013. All wines between 90-93. the top 3 was 12, 01 and 09.

for me second best, nicely balanced with burgundy sweetness, soja sauce, smooth and silky tannins, still refreshing acidity and saltieness, almost reached his top 92-93

  • Medium garnet red, brick hue. Nose of dark fruit with some woody, earthy tones as well as green bell pepper scents. On the pallet this is ripe and sweetish similar to an old Claret. There is a green note in thr background complementing the tertiaty CabSav aromas. May be it comes from the CabFranc or PetitVerdot in the blend or CaSav itself was not fully mature. Since the tannins were soft, the green notes did notarticularly disturb me in this case.

  • Dinner at home: Was curious to try a mature Bordeaux blend from a quality South African producer, and given some of the guests preference for bigger reds I thought would give it a try. Medium garnet color, very new world with rich sweet dark fruits, which for my taste is overripe, eucalyptus and tar. Was however puzzled by a clearly green streak, from the Cabernet Sauvignon I suppose in the this otherwise overripe wine with 14.5% alcohol. What I don't mind in a Sociando Mallet with it's cooler and dryer aromatic profile, does not work for me with much sweeter dark fruit.

  • Sweet, saturated, clunky. Not Bordeauxish and and not at all the wine I thought it would be now based on a bottle in 2013 (from the same cellar). Almost dessert-sweet.
