  • Very few Chateauneuf age past 12-15 years, with only a handful or so of wines making it past 25 years, but this Clos des Papes was simply off the hook at more than 50 years of age! The nose, with its cigar, mint, strawberry, and charcoal was gorgeous, and the silky, pure, red-toned fruits on the palate were as good, if not better. It is not a candidate for further aging, but if you ever see one of these gens, grab it, and call me! Drink from 2023-2025.

  • started serving around 20 minutes after opening, without decanting. Very cloudy. Pretty fragrant with red fruits like red cherries and some leather. Fifteen minutes later showed some toasty notes, and developed a lovely nose with rose petals. Second pour about 1 hour after opening and the wine was already more muted, showing some mint and eucalyptus. Pretty happy with this.

  • Clos des Papes Vertical (Tribeca Grill): A stunning wine. The nose was ethereal and full of mature nuance of wild mushrooms, truffles and herbs overlying a bed of raspberries. The palate was exceptionally delicate with earthy wild raspberries framed on the entry and finish by garrigue. The finish also showed a touch of spiciness. With no noticable tannin, the fruit lulled quietly along on string of acidity. While others remarked that the finish was short, I could not disagree more. I found a sneaky persistance to the wine that I believe owed a debt to the acidic structure. The thing I loved about this wine was the quiet self-assurance it showed. Whereas many of the later wines shouted to you, this one made you lean in to hear a whisper.

  • Clos des Papes Vertical (Tribeca Grill, NYC): Purchased off the wine list by the group. This wine was recently acquired at auction. Rusty red in color with a deep and powerful nose. Wonderful mid palate but the finish was too abrupt. Tons of acidity and notes of red fruit and truffles. If I had this blind I might have guessed an older Burgundy. So much fun to drink this wine. Mine didn't last long but others let it sit and it quickly died with air. What a treat to taste this.
