Deep ruby red with brick red brim. Pleasant, developed nose with notes of leather, dried cherries and underbrush. Mouthfeel is mature, with fine, vital fruit, smooth tannins, nice acidity and notes of leather, dried cherries and underbrush.
Very nice, well developed Pommard, drinks very well now. Very classic, very good.

2002 Burgundy @ Noizé: Dense mid ruby. A little cloudy. Dark and brooding. Just too muddy. All stewed tannin. Three day old black tea. No. This can’t be representative or what the wine maker intended after twenty years in bottle. No.

This bottle a little over the hill and otherwise not quite right. Cloudy for starters. Still some positive features but the structure has dissolved and weakened leaving a sense of baked goods. Falling apart a bit.

Deep and quite translucent dark cherry with a hint of developed bricking towards the rim. The nose feels open, somewhat sweet-toned and slightly developed with aromas of cooked beetroot, some wizened dark fruits, a little bit of strawberry, light floral notes of partly wilted violets and a hint of brambly raspberry. The wine is ripe, medium-bodied and somewhat developed on the palate with layered flavors of wizened black cherries, some tart lingonberries, a little bit of sour cherry bitterness, light earthy tones, a hint of dry old leather and a tertiary touch of meat stew. The wine is balanced and enjoyably structured with its moderately high acidity and nice, textural medium tannins. The finish is long, somewhat grippy and slightly bitter with flavors of brambly raspberries, meaty umami, some earthy spices, a little bit of meat stew with rosemary, light sour cherry bitterness and a hint of tart cranberry.
A very lovely, harmonious and enjoyably developed Pommard that has started to lose its most noticeable grippy nature and power. Although the wine still retains good tannic backbone at the age of 17 years, the wine has resolved quite beautifully and although doesn't feel old, the wine certainly shows nice developed character. It's now in a very attractive phase and well in its drinking window, although I can imagine it will take years more before the wine is on its plateau of maturity. Can be drunk now, but will reward further cellaring. Priced according to its quality at 54€.

(de Courcel Pommard Clos des Epenots) Drunk directly following Bichot's 2001 Vosne-Romanée. Deeper medium-plus cherry-red. The nose is sweet and black, actually very nice and pretty though primary. The palate doesn't show an obvious concentration upgrade vs the Vosne and in the mouth certainly isn't as texturally impressive. Plenty of medium-grain tannin and good acidity. Again a nice black cherry aspect to the palate coupled with a medium finish. Nice, fun and tasty but I expected just a little more...
