The 2009 is finally in its zone! If you don’t know Charvin, try one of these.
Medium dark in color, with a lot going on in the exuberant nose : sweetly ripe raspberries, crème caramel, lavender, vanilla. Soft, rich, palate-staining. Hard to resist going back to the glass… the endless finish makes it even harder : the wine seems to linger for ten minutes! Awesome.
PS: eventually, reduced this from 97 to 95. With food, it seemed off-scale amazing. But after dinner by itself, I started to feel that the back half of the finish lacks stuffing and comes off as a little hollow. Not a flaw, but not as close to perfect as I was initially thinking. FWIW we paired it with butternut squash-stuffed ravioli in a sage and butter sauce and zucchini poached in white wines, shallots melted in butter, and a little “better than bouillon”, the roast chicken one.

A fine nose that suggests plummy fruit and a hot hillside. On the palate the fruit is muted but there are great notes of garrigue that are interesting and long on the finish. This really settles well and improves over several hours. It has depth, layers, dark beauty, fine tannins and lots to give. Ace.

Pnp. Medicinal red fruit to start giving way to taut, candied berries and spice. Consistent. Continues to be in an ideal phase and should be for a good while.

Ripe, plummy cherry fruit. Rich and spicy, great purity. Lavender and thyme. Great expression of terroir, as always, from Charvin. Many years left.

Popped and poured - earthy and tight.
