Dinner with Keith at Table, Donkey and Stick (Chicago, IL): On most nights, this would have been an amazing bottle to open, but this had the misfortune of having been served after an amazing example of the 1990 Jadot Pougets. Despite that, this still stood its own. Despite the ripe vintage, this showed quite closely to my mental image of the Clair house style -- bright red fruit and acid-driven. There's a touch of earth and rust on the palate as well.

The hard pruney tannins that marked many 1990 red burgundies are falling away leaving in this case a red burgundy on the elegant red fruit side. Quite rich, plenty of finish.

Lighter, fading ruby color. Classic old Burgundy nose of sweet cherries, barnyard and pitched earth. Really ripe and succulent fruit with earthy cherry and cranberry flavors and crisp acids. Really holding up well although there is a metallic element that I find a bit off-putting. The finish is mildly complex with nice red spice and mineral notes. Fun to drink.

Dinner at RPM (RPM Italian - Chicago, IL): Aromatics were off the charts here with lots of earthy mushroom, cherry, dried florals, and forestal tones. Deep, complex, and hypnotic, this was firing on all cylinders. The palate was elegant and lithe with cranberry, some damp earth and brambly cherry. Loved it.
