Beat the '91 Heitz: Everyone was convinced this was the Heitz on the basis that it was their favourite but I was quite sure this was an Aussie since it reminded me a lot of the Diana Cullen that I tried previously. Lots of pyrazines and mint on the nose, sweet attractive fruit but thought it lacked a little precision and structure. Thought this was good but I didn’t like this as much as the others. Nevertheless, thankful to have tried a birth year wine. 4/8.

The wine was certainly in a better shape than the cork. Dark deep red, opaque. The colour did not give away the age. Nose of dark red, blue and black fruit, cassis if I have to pick one; touch of wood and mineral notes, quite complex. Palate was intense, well structured, good mid palate; ripe fine soft tannins, fruit and acidity in near perfect balance. Still fruit driven after all these years. Nothing missing. I do not think this is getting better but not near its end either.

Had this together with a 92 Montelena. Really exotic and delicious. Camphor, eucalyptus, nice finish, albeit a little short.
