Atkin 95+ Tasting Event (and dinner wines) (Strauss Auction, Cape Town (and Jo'burg)): A complex array of sawdust, woodsmoke, cassis and blackberry on the nose. A nicely extracted palate with cedarwood, toast and wild berries with a lively acidity that provides freshness. This is set against a compote-like intensity of the fruit with richness and flavours of mocha; coffee grinds and very dark, bitter chocolate. Dry-edged firm tannins with a long finish and a linear frame. It could benefit from a little more material to the mid-palate - a little hollow? It finishes with that pastille sweetness and some dried herbs and remains enjoyable. Blend of 57 CS, 14 Merlot, 14 Malbec

Big and bold wine. Dark cherries, blackberry, dark chocolate. Nice to rink already now, but will be better in 5-10 years.

Well made, as always, but this was way too early.
Will try again in 4 years.

Tasting @ De Toren; 4/23/2022-4/25/2022 (De Toren, Stellembosch): The ‘regular’ flagship offering. Medium/deep ruby, cigar box, tobacco, cedar, blackberry, dark cherry, medium + acidity, medium + tannins, clearly not ready to drink yet.
