Dinner at Chengdu Impression (Chicago, IL): Every time I drink a Prüm Himmelreich, I ask myself why it is I generally only buy Sonnenuhr, and I have no sane answer to that question, because this is a phenomenally good wine year in year out. The mineral intensity here is fantastic, and forms the core around the fruit, sweetness, and acid. Almost chewy in that minerality, which I really love.
(Followed over 3 nights) Delightful riesling, a bit on the sweet (for me) and primary side at the moment (after 20+years, no less) and yet so pure and full of life. Light golden color. Bit of petrol on the nose, then lots of peach/apricot liqueur aromatics and flavors, honey, new tennis ball (yep), and by day 3 some savory, brothy notes emerged, which I enjoyed. Great acidity. Give bottles another 10-20 years and you will be richly rewarded. This will be a 50 year wine, easily, in cold cellars. Rating: 94+

Purchased on release, with the $29.99 price tag still intact. Rich gold color with lots of petrol to go with the white peach and apple tart flavors. Lots of energy here, with plenty of acidity to temper the initial sweetness, keeping everything in balance. Aging gracefully with no sign of decline.

Improved with air, how many other 21 year old Germans can say that? A little sour at first, became this honeyed apple delight that lingered forever on the palate. Bought the 01 WS Auslese and this for $27.99 on release... and wow... both were amazing after 20 years.

Showing beautifully with very light petrol aromas, baked apple, and slate. The wine is considerably less sweet then expected in a more off dry sense. The bright acid and cool chalky components with a sense of denser fruit works very well. This is a food friendly easier drinker that gives a lot of pleasure. In a great drinking window. At Peeking Duck House NYC.

(J.J. Prum Graacher Himmelreich Auslese) The Prum funk is singing on the nose. Under that funk though there was apricot, minerals, apple spice, pineapple and honey. But man that funk is strong. This was open for two hours and the funk blew off but you could still tell it was there. Delicate palate with a gorgeous creamy texture. This wine is just crammed with flavors of orange cream pie, honey, baked apples, and white peach. Your palate is coated with honey-baked apples for minutes after. There is also an exotic hint of fresh ginger on the finish. Just plain incredible length. The acid is there but currently covered up by the baby fat. Perfectly balanced and very deep wine. This is great stuff. After around three hours the slate component started to really show on the nose and the sweet/sour interplay on the finish became very intense.
