2009 Red Burgundy - BLIND (NY, NY): complex palate. A bit subdued. I felt this needed some time to flesh out. finish was a bit light. Fruit is restrained. This finished 8th out of 12 wines served blind in tasting of 2009 Red Burgundy.
Stunning depth and quality here that is already open and oozing with character. Pure, ripe fruit stamped through with fresh, clean cut minerals and a dose of dry soil. What a wine. Given the plump nature of the fruit this will probably stay drinkable for a few years before shutting down. Will last 20 years easily. But is is Volnay?
Another Saturday at Knightsbridge - mostly blind (Northbrook, IL): Tasted double blind. Lush, sweet red and black fruit on nose and palate. This didn't show much floral character so I didn't think from Volnay. It also had great energy and textures, making me think this more likely 2010 than 2009. Oops. This is a huge Volnay with the stuffing and raw materials to age beautifully as some of that baby fat softens.
Grand Tasting - La Paulee de San Francisco (Westin St. Francis - San Francisco CA): Really sensational Volnay, this reminded me of tasting it from barrel in late 2010. Floral start. Lush and spicy, showcasing an array of cherry aromas and flavors with great energy and textures. Already nuanced from start to finish, this will be a sensational and classic Volnay, even if slightly bolder and more robust than some others.
