  • Fabulous wine. Perfectly structured and showing no signs of fading despite being more than 40 years old.

  • Nose: Still a beautiful amalgam of sweet red fruits, nice tobacco hints and a delightful vanilla character which this vintage (and the 1978 and 1979) had. Enchanting. Classic Mount Mary of the era.

Palate: Velvetty smooth (as always) and still with that beautiful blend of gorgeous red fruits (albeit fully mature) and - like the 78 and 79 - the most enticing vanilla I've ever seen in an Australian red. Very gentle and supple palate now - a few years past its peak - but still fabulous; I don't know how the great Doctor got such yummy flavours in his Cabernets in those years. That said, much as I dislike excess alcohol in many modern wines, the 1980 is a touch light in alcohol (the label says 11.5%) unlike the glorious 1979, which was just perfect!

Note that Mount Mary "Cabernets" became Mount Mary "Quintet" some years later.
