  • I'll admit I had high hopes for this wine although didn't really have the time to do the prep exactly right. Meant to decant for sediment but ended up having to decant for about an hour to do a work call in there. The wine was very subtle and quiet and that was esp clear next to a '13 Horsepower which was a lot more intense. Missing some of the power I associate with Northern Rhone (although to be fair this to me just confirms that Cote Rotie and Cornas are more my jam than Hermitage).

  • Tale of two '90 Hermitages. Decided to open a couple of old Hermitages for a cage match on a cold New England Winters night. '90 Chapoutier Sizeranne vs. '90 Sorrel Hermitage (regular bottling).

Color/App: light/medium ruby core -> diffuse fully mature garnet/bricked rim; just a bit lighter than its counterpart, the '90 Chapoutier Sizeranne. Much better nose here though, showing leather, barnyard, cherries, roasted meat and iron -- certainly more intense than the Chapoutier. Palate also more expressive with olives, cherries, leather, forest floor and savoury spices. Good depth of flavor and finish though it did start to tire after about 3 hours (while the Chapoutier continued on). Amazing how well these base-level Hermitages were made (granted, in a great vintage) years ago. Lovely wine and delicious to enjoy with venison stroganoff. The winner by a nose . . . .

  • Dinner Ederer in Munich. Quite enjoyed this bottle, the vintage was so good for Rhone and this bottle was no exception. Probably would have scored it higher if if wasn't for a small musty note that just wouldn't go away, big wine with ox blood and dark berries mingled with asian spices. fully mature.

  • BYO Rhone Dinner (Cyrano's Bistro): Olivey, leathery, dry. Reserved from nose to finish. Definitely past its peak.
