Phil's Birthday tasting (Phil's place, Putney, Sydney): From Coravin. Initially closed and showing a little cork taint which grows with time. Blackberry and plum under this with black cherry, biscuit and sweet spice. Juicy acid, sweet black fruits with lovely tannins that grip and grab at the palate. Pity about the cork taint though. Bah.

Oozo, blackcurrants, iodine, violets. Lots going on. Intense but refined, structured but smooth. Think Cornas, Clape. Drinking well now and will continue to develop nicely. (94 Excellent wine)

Some Wendouree: A step up in power and intensity from the Shiraz Malbec blends. This is richer and more intense on the palate, showing those classic Wendouree flavours of eucalyptus, smoke, and green herbal and minty notes around a core of ripe red and dark fruited flavours, but there's also a note of VA on the nose here. This is just starting to hit its drinking window - it's not particularly tannic in contrast to the other Wendourees at the table, and has a more gentle palate presence (albeit after an hour in the decanter).

PNP into Zalto Burgundy glass (“Root” day): Medium purplish ruby.
Darker red cherries and plums that is now full mature. Very well integrated vanilla notes from oak. Very slight hint of VA.
Acidity is fine boned, medium dry and ever so slightly touch of sweet. Finishes dry and tight in a nice way.
93-94 points.
