  • 12,5% alcohol. Bottled in a 0,72-liter bottle.

Moderately developed, translucent dark cherry red color with mature mahogany overtones and a pale, brick-orange rim. The nose feels pungent, slightly oxidized and subtly aldehydic with aromas of funky lambic beer, some salt-cured beed, light raisiny tones, a little bit of smoke, a hint of peppery spice and a touch of sweet pipe tobacco. The wine is dry, moderately full-bodied and quite ripe on the palate with relatively concentrated flavors of bitter sour cherries, some wizened red plums, a little bit of tar, light sweet notes of dried dates, a hint of tobacco and a touch of tart lingonberry. Overall the wine feels quite aged and getting somewhat dull, yet still showing enjoyable complexity. The high acidity and moderately firm and grippy tannins lend good sense of structure to hte wine. The finish is tart, acid-driven and quite grippy with pretty long flavors of crunchy lingonberries, some aldehydic salinity, a little bit of wizened dark cherries, a little bit of tart red plums, a hint of meaty umami and a touch of earth.

Based on the nose I was quite sure the wine was completely flat and oxidized, but it turned out to be quite attractive and complex on the palate with a little bit of aldehydic oxidative character but otherwise just nicely developed and tertiary. Apparently these Caremas by Ferrando - while being more attractive while they're young - don't seem to age as well as the Caremas by the local co-op Cantina dei Produttori Nebbiolo di Carema, since when both the Carema and the co-op wines are still alive, the Ferrandos seem much more oxidative and aged, whereas the co-op wines can be remarkably youthful for their age. Nevertheless, this is a lovely example of aged Carema with tons of depth and complexity - and a rather oxidative nose. Most likely the wine isn't going to get any better from here, so it's best to drink it ASAP.

  • Second to the '67, this was showing phenomenally, with very little sign of falling apart anytime soon. I sometimes wonder how something that has been in the bottle for around 46 years can taste this fresh, but that seems to be Ferrando for you. Continuing the pattern, great acidity and freshness, with a bit more fruit than the others, but still plenty of tertiary goodness to sink your teeth into. Another fabulous wine.

  • Alto Piemonte (The Gander, NYC): Tar and black fruit nose with a hint of something floral. Gorgesous and full in the mouth with a long cherry finish. This is in amazing shape considering the vintage and that it is the white label. Great showing.
