  • Rayne Vigneau 2002: Beautiful wine, smelled of fresh apricots, honey, marmalade, and a little bit of butterscotch. Nice acid, good sweetness. Textbook Sauternes, which you'd expect from a premier cru with 20+ years of cellar age.

Foie gras from Robuchon delicatessen, Piccadilly.

Opened on NYE, just finished it off for breakfast today (7/I/24), no noticeable degradation during that break. I love foie gras and Sauternes for breakfast (or bacon sandwiches and Sauternes in years that I can't get foie gras). It's usually a Boxing Day or New Year's Day treat of leftovers from the night before, but this year it had to wait a while because of children: having a three year old plus a baby going through a sleep regression during the two weeks of nursery shutdown per year really meant that the celebrations were rather squished in where they could be! Decided to finish it off this morning as I'm coming down with a cold and wanted to have it before I lost my sense of smell for a few days!

Now to make some more coffee as the wakefulness of the sudafed is wearing off!...

  • Vertical at Château de Rayne-Vigneau (sur place): Amber in colour. Coffee grinds, a little funk, and tertiary notes on the nose that reminds me of aged Champagne. Unctuous with good midpalate density where there is spicy marmalade. Still, it works well, all in balance.

  • Beautiful nectar. Apricot, peach, honey with some floral notes and a wonderful finish that just goes on. This bottle got better after a couple days open

  • Rayne Vigneau Tasting Event by Altavis (Bund 6, Shanghai): Fully developed honey, elder flower syrup, dried pineapple and apricot, sweet vanilla notes lay beautifully on the palate. The spreading, gently-touched acidity diluted the high sweetness. Luxurious and lush. A pity finish with a lack of power.
Fresh and clean, exceptional now, can be enjoyed in the next decade or more.

  • Cotton candy, smoky botrytis and steely apricots on the intriguing nose. Palate is sadly lacking in concentration and texture - almost feels a little watery. Could be over the hill? Not bad, but the requisite acidity and punch just aren’t there.
