The '16 Rocche opens with an incredible perfume of dark red to black berry fruit, citrus peel, red floral tones, menthol, and spice, with the aromatics showing beautiful sweetness. While I don't think the aromatics are quite as open and vibrant as they were on release in 2020, for a Barolo of its caliber and age, this is quite open aromatically.
On the palate, I found the wine medium plus in body with beautiful inner sweetness and a significant amount of very finessed tannins, with the level of sweetness and medium plus acidity providing a lot of energy to the wine. Texturally, the wine will definitely benefit from time in the cellar for the tannins to integrate, and I also found the palate a bit more clenched than the aromatics. I found dark red to black berry fruits, sweet spices, dark florals, and a touch of anise, all a bit reticent.
The '16 Rocche seems every bit as impressive as in 2020 although as you'd expect it has clenched up a bit, in need of another 10+ years to be in its prime (a recent bottle of the '10 Rocche was one of the few '10s I regretted opening in a horizontal, for what it's worth). My score is a notch lower than my notes from 2020, reflecting less the wine and more so that I've had a lot of great wine over the past 4 years that has driven my perception of the relative quality here down a touch.

This will be an explosive wine in 20 year’s time. Perfumed nose with no single dominant note of: violet, dried rose, dark red berries, spice. On palate I found raspberry, black cherry and violets. Med+ acids. Prominent tannin on the finish. A very long finish with raspberry and tannins. In 15-20 years this wine has the chance to be full of purple violets alongside more common Barolo notes – which would be rather stunning. My wine-searcher alert for the release price will never be triggered.
An incredible ~20 wines tasted with incredible knowledge transfer about Vietti (they are badass if you haven't had their wines)- wines, history, style, etc. No note, impressions only. Speed tasting.
Wow. This is a Wow wine. Anything else I write is meaningless. Amazing, dark red fruit, super everything- flavors, structure, complexity, minerals, long finish- awesome

Barolo 2016 arrivage tasting; 11/6/2020-11/7/2020 (@Home): Glass: Riedel Vinum Burgundy Drunk from 0,1l bottle that was professionally filled from original 0,75l bottle two days before. Clear, deep garnet color with tawny reflexes. Clean, medium+ intense nose. Lots of chalky mineral notes, dried petals and blossoms, fine red fruit. Ethereal, deep and beautiful. Dry, high, beautiful racy acidity. 14,5% abv. High, fine grained tannin that gives the wine a beautiful velvety texture. Very mineral, salty, great fine red fruit, herbaceous. A bit more masculine than the Lazzarito, with more pressure, but otherwise equally great. Beautiful balance, very complex and so juicy and joyful to drink! Very long, complex and multi-dimensional finish! Obviously young, but already an amazing wine. Great potential. 95++
