  • We tasted five Les Fuees in two days. The concentrated but at the same time delicate and superbly delineated Mugnier 2017 (95pts) showcased the quality, finesse and elegance this domaine is able to produce, as well as 2017s appeal as an early drinking vintage. On its heels, Ghislaine Barthod’s 2022 (95pts) which showed incredibly purity and that typical to die for red fruit core, complemented by many other layers. Already superb, despite its youth. We tasted her 2010 too (94pts) which showed an even broader aromatic spectrum with pure, fresh fruit in all shapes and colors at the core and lots of minerality but at the same time still had noticeable tannins which have to mellow further. The Amiot Servelle 2020 (92pts) showed that it’s not a good time to open the 2020s yet, while it showed promising complexity, it was too powerful and structured to truly shine. The Felettig 2020 (86pts) was very dark and concentrated, definitely more Northern Rhone than a Chambolle, but maybe this might come around in 20 years.

  • At Les Mirandes in Avignon. Beautiful wine which defies the vintage. No candy fruit or stewed fruit, just pure, clean and transparent fruit with prefectly balanced acidity. Nose of floral, tea and etheral and balsamic notes. Light and elegant and amazingly succulent finish. Bravo in 2017!!

  • Floral nose, medium red, a very feminine wine. Light weight on the palate with wonderful flavours of red berry. Primarily Raspberry/strawberry with light tannins that persist on the back pf the palate. This drank better upon opening and through the first two glasses. I put it aside and the next day the tannins were more evident. Easy to drink ....but it,s no where near it's potential

  • At a restaurant in Dijon. A fleshy wine with raspberry and sour cherry fruit, earthy notes, iodine and a fine layer of spice. A harmonious and complete plate, but with limited mid-palate and minor bitter notes into the finish.

  • Opened at Le Cave des Remparts in Tokyo. Initially P&P, but decanted for more air.

This was a slightly strange Fuées for me. I think it's in a bit of an awkward phase. This wasn't quite what I was looking for - i.e. elegant Mugnier Chambolle: red fruits and a reflection of white soil, yet with meat on the palate. It was a bit disjointed and confusing for me personally on the nose, even yielding slight hints of orange.

The wine came together much better towards the end, and after I took the decision to decant this, and the score reflects the final few pours. However, I'd lay this down for a while and see where it's at in 5+ years.

Perhaps I had high expectations given 2017's reputation as an easy-opening vintage, and also because I had the 2019 a few months ago and that was absolutely fantastic. Perhaps this is just a muted phase, and it will wake up again and blossom in a few years time. Definitely excited to see where this bottle goes, and will definitely revisit when it's more ready.
