Displaying very fine notes of dark berries, bacon, meat, smoke and tobacco, this regionally typical wine is in a nice phase at the moment. The wine is having a good acidic structure, but I had maybe expected it to be more fruity at this stage of the evolving process. However, there is certainly enough fruit so that the wine can still evolve for many years from now.

100% Syrah from multiple parcels in Hermitage. Fermented and macerated for 4 weeks in vats. Aged for 36 months in oak barrels (50% new). 14% alcohol. Annual production approximately 35,000 bottles. Tasted blind.
Deep, dark, slightly evolved blackish-red color. The dark-toned nose feels somewhat oaky and more Bordelais than reminiscent of Rhône Syrah with aromas of wizened blackcurrants, some vanilla tones, a little bit of cloves and other Christmas spices, light plummy notes, a hint of wizened black cherry and a touch of blackberry compote. The wine feels dense, ripe and concentrated on the palate with a full body and somewhat oak-driven flavors of sweet blackcurrants and juicy bilberries, some vanilla oak and cacao tones, a little bit of savory meaty character, light crunchy notes of fresh redcurrants, a hint of woody oak spice and a touch of plummy dark fruit. The rather high acidity and somewhat grippy medium tannins lends good sense of balance and structure to the wine, but the overall feel is quite modern, polished and bit too sweetly-fruited for my preference. The finish is long, rich and somewhat grippy with a rather sweet-toned aftertaste of ripe blackcurrants and plum jam, some vanilla and cacao notes of toasty oak spice, a little bit of crunchy red currant, light blackberry tones, a woody hint of savory oak spice and a touch of savory meaty character.
A rather big, oaky and glossy Northern Rhône Syrah that is a bit too polished and modernist for my preference. With the rather blackcurrant-driven fruit profile and all the vanilla oak tones, I thought this was a young Bordeaux. I honestly couldn't go to Northern Rhône, because the wine was so far removed from the style what I think is typical of Northern Rhône Syrah. Most likely the wine can turn into something complex and interesting with enough aging - and the wine feels like it is built to age - but at the moment the wine does nothing for me. Way too much oak for my taste.
