The 2018 is a slightly unusual Beychevelle in the modern era. Always a wine with a relatively high percentage of Merlot, it’s a particularly large portion of the assemblage this year and it shows. Tasting this blind, I’m struck by how soft and fleshy this is, full of red and black cherry with a slightly liqueur-like, griottine nose. The alcohol shows slightly more on the palate than usual, probably in the context of the fleshier textures imparted by the higher than usual proportion of Merlot. 12 hours after opening this, the palate becomes more cohesive, though, the alcohol less conspicuous and an appealing potpourri note develops in the mouth. The pencilly, potpourri-filled finish is impressive. The Merlot was harvested from September 21-October 9 and the Cabernet Sauvignon from October 8-16 at a yield of 55hl/ha and a final assemblage of 50%M, 41% CS, 6% PV, 3% CF. The ABV is 14.5% and the pH 3.74. Tasted December 2023. 91-93 points

Deep, clear, dark garnet red, ruby in the center. Deep, rich red and purple fruits on the nose. Really deep purple fruit with notes of tar and charcoal. Needs another 8+ years to integrate and mature.

Currants, red berries, green pepper, herbs good minerality. Already a joy to drink now. But will obviously continue to evolve over the next decade or so. A bit too sharp for my palate at this stage.

Quite surprised. Purchased at a restaurant. PnP into the glass with the rest splashed into a decanter and consumed over 2 hours.
Very approachable and well integrated. Could taste the impact of the higher Merlot this year. Crowd pleaser
