  • 2018 m.vineyards home block

    Day two.

Refracting medium red with flashes of orange.

Glossy cherry boiled candy nose with woodsy stems. Strawberries and cream candy oak. Smells decadent, lush and inviting

Lands like cherry and raspberry cordial, with a glossy mouthfeel but had acids to clean it up.

Through the middle, to borrow from the Duck, it gets Toffee Apple chewy candy.

Just when you think it’s about to be all confected and sweet the savoury spice and stems really pull it back in to line from the mid palate out.

The finish is layered with spice, tannin and a real tacky, savoury meaty chew. It really does it’s best work through the finish, a real ‘peacock tail’ of a wine.

Finishes long, with a slight menthol herbal edge keeping things fresh and complex. It’s long, and the bitter stalks come back in through the very good length and aftertaste.

It’s a wine of two halves.

Sweet and slightly sour up front but serious in the rear. It shows that 2018 warm vintage in that sugars and alcohol and tannins sit slightly higher than fruit density. It’s balanced, but lacks stuffing to make old bones.

It’s in the excellent range but only just. Some fancy winemaking on show here in a challenging vintage.

93, drink now for its youthful complexity. It’s got tannins to hold it, but they along with savoury spice will quickly overtake the fruit density here.

Glad to pick this one up on deal, it’s a wine that I really enjoy but recent prices rarely catch the quality level on this one in Oz.
