  • Superb. Bottle from Langton’s (Halliday Collection).
Excellent colour - clean and clear.
Nose restrained at beginning, but slowly began to express itself after about 2 hours. Pretty.
Palate was excellent given its age and the quality of the vintage. Only complaint was that it was a tad thin, but I’m nitpicking.
I find young Vogues hard to drink, esp in recent vintages, because they always seem overly extracted. This was not a young Vogue by any means, but at 27 years young it was drinking beautifully.

  • Fully mature. Savory.

  • Difficult to score this wine. I really enjoyed it - after letting it have a lot of air in bottle, this began to give a sneak peak at some fabulous complex aromas, but as soon as you spotted them they disappeared! Broad and long in the mouth in terms of feel, but the fruit is pretty much faded. Given I have not drunk a lot of mature burgundy, this just piqued my interest in further to try better examples. Great fun wine and looking forward to the dregs tonight! Update - I tasted this the night after and the palate had gained significant richness - really impressive and with a long and tingling finish. Nudged my score up a point.

  • A Retrospective of the Cotes de Nuits though the 90s (Asia Grand): Menthol lifted dried flowers and dried fruits stewed into a tea but with another layer of undergrowth and leather. Sweeter fruits than the Volnay . This has good fruits although it does show that it is taking a turn around the bend downwards. Fading off but before it does, we are given one last mersmerizing kiss of alluring sweet red berries, spice notes and quiet strength.

  • A Retrospective of the Côte de Nuits through the 1990's (Asia Grand, Odeon Towers): Fast going downhill, with the fruit fading away, but I thought we caught it while it was still immensely enjoyable. Brown, brickish colour, with a lovely nose of dried mahogany, dried figs and plums (a touch port-like here), perfumed, musky cherries and dried potpourri flowers. Almost lusciously sweet and very charming. Quite a beauty. There was still enough on the palate to give a thick, luscious feel on the attack with the remnants of sweet cherries, raspberry jam notes and plums along with wood spice, a touch of leather and some beef blood. The wine just lacked a little strength on the finish, which was beginning to dry out, with dried fruit notes, spice and stewed tea - all this lingered rather leanly from the mid-palate onwards. The wine would have been really nice a few years back, but even now, it is a testament to the strength of the house from the mid-1990s onwards. Quite an amazing showing for a village wine from an off vintage.
