Really, we should drink more of this. I think it loses cachet because it's so available, which is a shame. Everything you want in an old school style Rioja, brilliant with rib eyes after a 3 hour decant, still young. Not sure this vintage is the one you want to keep for another 20 years, but there's no rush now as it's still showing relatively young (for a Tondonia).
Color is light to medium brickish red with very sophisticated and typical Rioja bouquet of red brambly fruits with charred oak and orange peel and a pich of coconut. Palate has refreshing acidity, silky tannins, and good red fruit to carry to a medium aromatic finish. This is a special showcasing of traditional Rioja, as it was velvety, balanced, and complex.

(Viña Tondonia Red Reserva) COLOR-dark; NOSE-has a great gaminess; very earthy; this smells like food to me and makes me hungry; PALATE-great coffee and bitter dark chocolate flavors which I love; a mature wine with very different nuances; very complex; this may not be for everyone as it is not big, fruit forward wine; GV-No Score
(López de Heredia Viña Tondonia Rioja Reserva) The colour here is fascinating; in terms of pigment a dark red-black, but not that intense, shimmering and transparent. The nose has a very savoury and an earthy-spicy, wet-leafy undergrowth character, with a layer of tightly framed dark fruits behind. A gentle well-toned substance on entry, linear and fresh, nicely placed within a frame of acidity which gives a very crisp backbone to the wine through the middle and finish. There is a gentle youth to the warm cherry fruit, but nothing of the awkwardness of grander gran reservas at this stage. And there is evolving maturity too, tinges of zesty citrus alongside the supple fruit. And a good seam of tannins behind which come through to the finish. Great savoury, slightly juicy, mouth-watering finish. Very good Rioja with a fresh, elegant style.
