A few epic bottles in July: This pours very light garnet in the glass, medium plus bricking, with significant yellow/orange toward the rim. The nose initially comes across a tad tired showing brown sugar and autumn foliage turning to beef broth, dried red cherry, lemon peel, sautéed porcini, and mulchy earth. The palate is light and silky with medium tannin and medium plus acid. The finish closes on significant brothy character. Unfortunately this really didn't live up to the producer reputation and while there were redeeming qualities to it, overall it came across as too tertiary to merit a higher a score. This could be a sub-optimal bottle, but everything about it looked sound visually.

La Festa del Barolo: Rare Wine Dinner - Bartolo Mascarello (Legacy Records): From a magnum. The nose is a bit off but the palate is really quite nice. A bit of a juicy style of wine. Darker red fruits. Very round in style. Not quite at the level as some others in the flight but still an enjoyable wine.

Was so excited to try this, but think the bottle may not have been 100% sound. Slightly musty on the nose and just a bit shut down or tired on the palate - not overtly flawed but just very quiet. So sad.....

Celebrating 60 (The NoMad): This might have potentially been a tough off or if not off then it wasn't strutting it's stuff quite as well as the other two. Came across as a bit more tired. And while I love the traditional wine making I think sometimes the downside of old oak is there can be a touch of funk to it and this had some of that.

La Festa at Del Posto. This was consumed along side Bartolo's 58, 61, 64, 67 and 71. Decanted at 1pm for an 8pm dinner. As the baby of the group this showed extremely well. Such amazing perfume on the nose. Depth and complexity are hallmarks of all his wines and the 88 is no different. This wine is big, balanced, elegant, nuanced and complete. Treat these bottles right and they will last a lifetime. Drink this now or in 30 years. Just amazing wine making.
