  • Not sure how this stands at 90 average points. It deserves way more than its original WS/WA as well as current CT scores. I had the opportunity to taste this at a NYE party at the end of the night. It would have gone well with food but am grateful that the host opened it regardless. He said it was purchased at auction at a good price. Hopefully it was not the Wine-Searcher U.S. listing of $350 that I found. That's Burgundy for ya. Very enjoyable, so much so that I poured myself a little extra. If you are reading this, I apologize.

  • Dinner at Mark’s place (Karori, Wellington, NZ): Decanted two hours earlier (it could have used more time) and served double blind to Mark in Zalto Denk’Art Burgundy stems. A dark, young-looking colour, with only a touch of garnet at the rim. Rich, powerful and savoury bouquet of wet bramble, damp, dark soil, sous bois, barbequed, smoky game meats and musk, lifted spices and dark florals. The musky, lifted top notes largely disappeared when drinking from the Gabriel-Glas. Nothing sweet on the palate, all savoury and earthy, yet drinking fairly young. Very structured with serious mid palate weight. Polished black fruit and a little tar. “Chewy with rich tannins and quite long”, said Mark. He picked the Villages wine as 1er or even Grand Cru and 2016 as the vintage. He did not see a Gevrey-Chambertin signature and suggested Morey-St-Denis. Drinking it double blind – based on what was in the Zalto – I would probably have guessed similarly. The high percentage new oak presumably here (100%?) had mellowed and integrated with the fruit so to become virtually invisible. A long, dry, somewhat firm finish. Finishing the last glass the next evening, the nose was more mute and the mouth more earthy, meaty and funky, with those dark cherries. Not falling over. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was drinking similarly in 2030!

  • Blinded, and initially this was quite herbaceous. Some sour cherry notes, and mellowed red berries. With some air, it gains more sous bois and earth. Finish has a bit of a medicinal character. I quite liked the wine.

  • Let the wine breath for two hours in the bottle, and it was beautiful. Fresh, fruit, secondary perfume. Little to no barnyard (unfortunately), and paired well with sushi.

  • Tonight this was a delightful, fully mature village Gevrey with lots of rich, earthy red fruit, an abundance of sous bois, Asian spice and dried mushroom notes and some subtle tarry undertones. There's still some chalky tannins on the midlength finish. This was drinking beautifully for a nearly 20 year old village burgundy and, surprisingly, not at all tired.
