Dark purple Fruit forward on the nose, blackberries, oak, and smoke Blackberries, tobacco, and some minerality Medium tannins and medium acidity. Nice bang for the buck. It comes to life after about an hour decant

Classic Bordeaux from a less ripe vintage. Earthy notes along with cedar on the nose. Slightly dry and lacking in fruit but enjoyable nonetheless. This is in a good spot and fully mature but will hold nicely for 5-10 years.

This 2008 Chateau Meyney was a very pretty light bodied red, elegant, with an aromatic nose of cassis, spice and earth with a hint of vanilla, after an hour decant, and cassis, earth, spice, pencil shavings, and mineral tones on the palate. Everyone loved it, its a nice food wine, but also pretty and elegant on its own. It made the 2018 Grimms vineyard Cabernet which was also at the table taste like spicy oaked grape juice.

Interesting to note the relatively recent notes on this wine. Tasted a couple of years on now from those, and at the same time as Phélan Ségur 2005 (see separate note). This has the hand of the old régime with the influence of the CA Grands Crus ownership beginning to show. Colour: med deep red, thin rim, just a hint of brown. Nose: full, fresh, very floral, clearly CS dominant, vanilla notes from the oak. Taste: med body, rounded, still tannic, quite good fruit, rqther hot (13.5% ABV), med finish, rather astringent, cassis note dominating. Overall, enjoyable but not up to the more recent vintages, e.g. 2014, as the Merlot probably was green and is 30% of the blend.
