  • I inherited this wine along with many others from my father's wine cellar. When I decided to open it, I did so with great anxiety, fearing that so much time had passed that it might have declined past the point of enjoyment. Happily, my fears were largely unfounded. The first sip was preceded by a delightful bouquet and flavor which was sadly eclipsed by an acidity and unpleasant basement-like flavor which I feared indicated that the wine had spoiled.

Fortunately, patience prevailed and as I continued nearly all of the acidity in the finish eased away. While I am confident that I was perhaps five or even ten years late in opening the bottle, it still had much to offer. The bouquet offered a honeyed crispness which matched the initial taste, though due to its old age - the minerality that is so typical of Puligny Montrachet had given way to a slight sourness in the aftertaste. It was acidic, with a dark golden yellow color.

Bottom line: if you have a bottle - open it immediately. It is quite bold in flavor and would pair better with fowl or even pork as seafood will be hopefully overpowered by this formidable wine. Still a highly enjoyable wine, though allowances must be made due to its late age.
