  • Poured into decanter and drank over two hours. Excellent cork. Dark garnet with thin translucent rim. Pretty nose with sous bois, earth and sweet dark fruit. On the palate initially a bit austere with dark fruit, plenty of earth, coffee and even some iron. Later the wine mellows and is increasingly dominated by leather. Fine to medium tannins. Medium (+) finish.
    Nice but would not wait much longer as I am not a fan of wines dominated by leather. Just like Pape 95 and 96, this does not seem to be built for the very long haul.

  • I seem to have liked this wine more each year for the last 4-5yrs. This is now in prime drinking window, but will easily hold for 10+yrs. A gorgeous thick tobacco, truffle and sweet blackberry nose, some signs of slight fading, but plenty of dense fruit and tannin left. Acidity is discrete, but there - providing excellent balance. Heavy and hedonistic body, framed with the sense this has enjoyed lots of expensive oak, with with black fruit and dark cholocate taste and a lovely rich lingering plum and spice finish. Requires a 1hr double-decant now (from 375ml), after which it will open quickly in the glass. Note this would perform poorly in tastings or pop n pours... there's a funky smell that needs to blow off.

  • Getrunken zusammen mit Leo Barton, Papier Decesse, alle 1998. Alle einheitlich rund. Am Anfang Pape Clement etwas vorne, dann holt Pavie Decesse auf.. Tolle Weine.

  • Au début je crains les Bretts au nez mais ça disparaît rapidement dans le verre. A toutefois besoin de beaucoup d'air pour déployer ses ailes et la prochaine fois je le caraferais quelques heures plutôt que de le servir à brûle-pourpoint. À la fin de la soirée, on est face à un très beau vin, avec assez de charpente pour tenir la route plusieurs années - un bel équilibre entre le fruit encore croquant et quelques notes de feuille de tabac, de terre. Pas de note oxydative.

    (Pape-Clement) This wine was so overextracted and bitter that quite simply put, Michel Rolland raped the extract out of these grapes to the point of no return. These grapes were forced to give it up, and all of it up, as every single bit of extract was sucked out these grapes and it is dead or to keep the metaphor going, severely emotionally damaged. A shame as this wine showed very well five years ago. It was not an enjoyable beverage at all and I see the wine going nowhere. It was dark black and bitter with mild aromatic notes like tobacco that one would commonly associate with Pessac. A shame. Why does Michel Rolland have to mess with this estate? The were making perfectly fine wine in vintages like 1961. A shame as the material was probably good as 1998 was excellent in Graves/Pessac-Leognan.
