Introduction
Maybe one of the last, rare chances to taste this great vintage,
went from my hometown Hamburg in a first step some 600 KM to my beloved Riesling dry county, the Nahe, said hello at some places, restaurant Hermannshöhle, Niederhausen,
Dönnhoff, Oberhausen,
Schäfer-Fröhlich, Bockenau
Schneider, Niederhausen,
Schneider Bad Sobernheim
Started early on friday morning to make it some 450 Km to lake Biel, Switzerland for the 1982 semester rehearsal
Great ride with my Mustang GT 5,0 through Kasseler Berge on my beloved UNLIMITED GERMAN Autobahn,
one of the last adventures for none woke mankind!
As I am a real Nordic Man, need my river Elbe, the salty winds of North and Baltic Sea, but I can enjoy some days at the mountains too!
Therefore a ride to Switzerland is highly recommended!
Great locations at Lake Biel at Rousseau hotel and restaurant, as well as the following night at Avenches,
some two dozen wine freaks, mostly swiss citizens, but some half dozen Germans too!
Organized and moderated by the swiss wine "pope", Rene Gabriel , a warm and always in a good mood wine friend and "entertainer".
The wine tastings with RG at Switzerland are always held in a very relaxed atmosphere,
this is what a wine nerd like me is searching for, meet the people, have some great days/nights and discussions!
Flight 1 - Some 1982 bottles from other destinations (4 notes)
Hotel Rousseau:
tasted with beef fillet Carpaccio and truffles
no rating,
Flight 2 - Warm up Bordeaux round 1 (6 notes)
Tasted with something with asparagus, puff pastry and morels
firm, earthy showing from a very good bottle, a lot of fruit with cassis here, well structured, long+
Flight 3 - Some 1982 Bordeaux high lights (5 notes)
Paired with a Beef Entrecôte
a "little" Montrose in a good vintage,
as nearly always an earthy showing, still some rough tannin, tar, saddleleather, meaty, very lively showing, good + length, but rough the finish, very good bottle
blind would have talked about an maybe 2000 or 2005,
this power still,
firm with great cassis nose and palate, tobacco leafs, mineral core, really great structure, very, very long aftertaste, a monument of Saint-Julien!
***(*-*****), around 95,96(+) potential
95 for tonight
Flight 4 - First night greater name Saint-Emilion bottles (5 notes)
Paired all this bottles with some delicious Swiss cheese plate
very , very elegant, but for me a little too light,
maybe it is the competition problem right here tonight
needs enormous aeration, very herbal palate, not to mention the great swiss Ricola candy feeling, very good length
clearly CF driven, fresh red berrys, stunning vibrant supporting acid, that young appearance still, firm and full of power, great bottle
full of creamy barrel hints, but lacking charm and greatness,
more than less stubborn and blocked,
no rating
the magic words for this bottle are:
balance and finesse, enough said!
Flight 5 - Amuses geules (2 notes)
Honestly would kill for this one........,
this ultra lively appearance, deep as the Mariana trench in the pacific ocean, a basket full of delicious nuts, great finesse like flow over the mid palate,
as RG served the last sips for the ladies present, I really decided to discover my woke, feminine side of personality,
did not work, the rest of this bottle only for REAL ladies! ;-)
Flight 6 - Margaux 1982 (5 notes)
Greater pairing with food tonight!
Carpaccio de bouef fume terrine de foie gras en manteau de pistache
some leather hints, "stingy", green finish, puh,
no rating
some elegant flow, mineral hints, good finish,
but the best time of this chateau is NOW!
this bottle is in its fruit phase still,
lovely cassis while swallowing, firm, deep and with stunning structure due to the refined tannin, long+
among the leading pack of this evening,
finesse like flow of cedar, tobacco leaves and a full load of ripe cassis fruit, very long and with good acid mouthfeel and resolved tannin,
Flight 7 - Pauillac/ Pessac/ mixted 1982 (5 notes)
Paired with
Creme d´asperge suisse ris-de-veau et jambon cru
a little lean and short on the palate,
ripe, maybe a hint of opulent appearance, long finish
one of the best bottles from these two days,
juicy, opulent but with this outstanding finesse on the palate, to really chew and chew on!
Great, great bottle!
lacking some of the power from there, finesse like flow here though,
but if you can compare them right away in the two glasses in front of you, there is no doubt about it,
winner tonight is the Mission!
Flight 8 - Greater Pauillac (5 notes)
Tasted with
Cote de Pork "Grand Cru" au miel et poivre noir
Mouton is NOT delivering on this evening,
at first the Jeroboam of Mouton Phillipe....., now this one,
something like a choco-banana split icecream with a lot of oxy tones,
bad bottle
ultra refined, still demanding but ripe, fine tannin structure,
would recommend to decant this one some more hours before enjoying,
or just wait another decade+,
a very feminine showing for an Chateau Latour,
one of the best bottles of this two days
from MAG here again,
very fresh appearance, graphite, fine mineral core, delicate dark cassis fruit,
not quite as good as the Latour, but also top bottle
Flight 9 - Pomerol, SIC! (5 notes)
Cheeeeeeese, again!
creamy sweet fruit flow, tasty cranberry, delicate finish, very long, very good bottle here
a lot of not really perfect bottles during these two days, but the ones everybody is waiting for are mostly in a perfect condition,
same here,
what a nose, perfumed, sweet, delicious forest berries in the nose,
deep, deep , deep, but not the massive bid handed sword,
no......, this bottle is a florett!
Feminine powerful,, finesse like flow, very long and creamy, some strawberry hints..... really, opulent, great finish
a huge wine with fine opulence, tasty plums, herbs all the way, chocolates, creamy very long aftertaste
Flight 10 - Sauternes (3 notes)
Cigare au chocolat et glace Koa
candied fruit, dense still, tasty with an elegant long finish,
but the two that followed..........
perfect bottle,
this elegant showing, fist in gloves, nutty, deep and ultra fresh, still young showing, great bottle
Creme Brulee in the nose,
dancing the waltz on the palate,
concentration, delicious orange peel, intensive, very long finish,
perfect finish of two impressive days at Switzerland!
Flight 11 - Other wines from Thursday to Sunday (2 notes)
really flawed,
wet dog fur, eyeyey......, what a pity
compared to the 1982 bottles this is a carribean fruit cocktail!
and...... you can see the difference Monsieur Parker brought to Bordeaux!
very good structure, improves with aeration, but in this context "out of place", **(*- +?), around 90(+) potential
