I just love this wine, for one thing you can enjoy it almost immediately, for its delicious raspberry fruit. I kept this to see how it developed, and it is still very good, now with more complexity, adding forest floor and nuttiness to the fruit flavors (now less prominent in the mix). Very long, slim and elegant on the palate, and works wonders with baked chicken. You may argue that this wine is best appreciated young, but as revealed tonight, it tastes deliciously after a few years also, and may perhaps keep well for even longer.

2010 Château Coufran Haut-Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend (view label images)

I have fond memories of Coufran 1981,-82 and -85, but later vintages have sometimes been disappointing, the 2000 and 2005 surprisingly uninspiring. This vintage, however, shows more promise. To me it seems in a somewhat mute and closed phase, and I believe it will improve in 3-5 years. Initially the wine was one-dimensional, the nose dominated by prunes and plums, but after decanting for an hour, it revealed more complexity with notes of anise, leather, cedar wood and chocolate. The fruit is cool, acid and dry matter in balance, all wrapped and almost boxed in by the tannin structure.

Wonderfully expressive nose of dark mountain berries ("krekling" in Norwegian), gauze/medicinal, metal and blood (yes!), juicy, cool, long and fresh taste that works magic with reindeer and game sauce. One of my favorites. Perfect for drinking now. No need to keep it longer, although it may hold for several more years.

Christmas dinner, very young of course, but chosen for acidity to go with pork ribs and sauerkraut. Dark fruited, with notes of cherries and a little leather, earth and tar, big fruit with fresh acidity and prominent tannins. Worked well enough for its purpose tonight, but will probably need at least five more years to reach maturity.

A little tight upon opening, yielding more in an hour or two, to reveal a slightly dark fruited nose of cherries and wood, fine intensity and some structure. Had almost half a bottle left for next day, when the wine was substantially more open and approachable, and fruit pitch more red towards strawberries, also some forest floor and a touch of anise in the finish. Very delicate and elegant. May keep for some time still.

Very tight and almost mute, only letting off some intensely sweet red berries on the nose, which is hard to decode. Firm and fruity with good amount of dry extract. Seems very promising, and may score higher in time.

Takes some time to get started, but then it really knocks you out. Fragrance of citrus, wax (deep and quite prominent), gooseberries (comes and goes), white flowers, wood spices, and eventually pineapples (in a positive way), very energetic mouthfeel, lots of fruit, acidity and a very long lingering taste. Stunning.

This is a wonderful wine, but it it not really ready to drink. Last time, in spring 2019 it showed better, perhaps due to a longer decant, and I elected to try it again now, and found it very tight and a little closed with mostly dark berries and earthy tones. After around three hours it started to open up, to show notes of strawberries, anise, furcoat, leather. We drank this alongside a Gros Frere Echezeaux 2014, which was a lot more fragrant and seemed the more mature wine. In fact, tasting them blind, I noted that the Clos Vougeot 2005 seemed young! the mouthfeel however, is impressive, and the sweet fruit, power and persistence of this wine was even better than the Echezeaux. Wait around 5 more years for this.

Lovely nose of cherries, a touch of anise, earth and forest floor, in time also a whiff of metal. Fresh, juicy, firm, long taste with finely grained but noticeable tannins. Probably even better in two years or so.

Very good Rosso, fragrant and with the body and intensity that I look for in this type of wine. Nose shows notes of cherries, earth, orange peel/marzipan and wood spices. Approchable now, may get even better in a year or two.

Not on the same level as 2018, but still quite pleasing, and will perhaps add some weight with a year or so? The nose is very nice, fruits, some wet stones and leather. The palate a little light. Drinks well and may profit from a year or two.

Restrained but delicate nose of strawberries, wood, anise, forest floor and something undefinable but very pleasant and elegant. Elegant is the word to describe the palate also, slim and long. Tannins seem to be completely resolved. Would have wished a more expressive nose. I am uncertain whether this will evolve or should be drunk now (I chose the latter).

Got a little concerned about the development of 2007 red Burgs, so elected to open this which was probably a little early, didn't offer a lot this time, some anise, leather and minerals on the nose, slim and good length, but seemed a bit hollow on the palate. Slighty disappointing. I wondered if it was already going downhill, but now some time afterwards, I think it was still not ready.

A slight disappointment the first day, as I thought this would be more open and expressive, but alas - no. Discernible black currants, earth, cedar as it should be, but subdued and not really coming out. Cool fruit wrapped in noticeable tannins. A step up the next day, both on the nose and palate. The fruit is sweeter and more well rounded, and it gives away more on the nose. Needs at least two more years, perhaps four or five.
