Rich, lush, opulent, slightly oily in texture, the wine explodes with white peach, vanilla, lemon curd, tropical fruits and honeysuckle. This is quite long, intense and leaves a big impression. Only produced in magnum, this is probably going to be better and perhaps deserving of a higher score when it matures.
  • Rossodio commented:

Drinking incredibly well right now. Scored this beauty on clearance at my local Costco. Was marked down to … $6.97! Purchased 18 in total. If only they had more out back.
  • Rossodio commented:

1/16/24, 6:29 PM - Now that's a hell of a deal - better than the 2014 Trimbach Riesling that I scored for $6.99/bottle at a local 7-eleven which had been discounted from something like $22 to $18 to $14.99 to $12.99 to $9.99 and then the $6.99 I found it at in mid-2021. No one had any idea what was on the shelf and I only saw it because I had to wait in line to get the chips I was wanting. Bought all 11 of them. Similar strategy.

Unfortunately I only have one of these 2015 CCR's. Any thoughts on optimal drinking window? If you are not sure you can send me a case or so of yours and I can drink them over time and let you know...

Great color. The nose shows perfumed aromas of ripe berries, spices, flowers, minerals, and a hint of oak. This is medium full bodied on the palate with very good concentration and excellent class. The fairly long finish features elegant tannins ad refreshing acidity. Full of finesse! A lightweight vintage that drinks well out of the gate.
  • Rossodio commented:

12/21/23, 6:31 PM - I found a bottle of this which I am guessing was a small production wine given the vintage. In this bad vintage, do you think this wine that St. C made would be an appropriate pairing for a traditional beef wellington? Making one for Christmas dinner and am trying to fine something interesting to have with it.

Method: opened 45 minutes prior; starting at cellar temp; Bordeaux glass

Look: medium garnet

Nose: black cherry / blueberry pie, vanilla, baking spices, very faint cedar

Palate: red plum, dried herbs, graphite; long finish bitter dried herbs, graphite; dry; medium body with hallow mid palate; high- drying tannin; medium acrid / tart acidity that makes it hard to drink

It gets worse with every sip. It’s bitter and tart. Acrid. Drying tannins. I’m tempted to rate this in the 50s, but I didn’t actually spit it out, though I was tempted. I can’t drink this. Is it possible the cork completely failed (although, it doesn’t look like it).? Horrible. One of the worse wines I’ve ever had.
  • Rossodio commented:

9/30/23, 5:59 AM - I have sampled this wine twice and do not recall it being particularly tart or acidic. While this note does not sound like TCA or Brett got it, I do wonder what happened to your bottle. Hopefully you have another of your own, or at least a chance to try another bottle. To me it is quite modern in style but well made if that is your thing.

Really fun with all that aged fun that mature champagne can bring. If it had more acidity, it would be more eye popping but its actually slightly flabby, but rich, vinous, and toasty. The bubble package is also a little lazy and behaves like old bottles would. DRINK

Bienvenue a Champagne; 4/20/2023-4/29/2023 (Les Crayeres, various restaurants, Les Avises and a many wonderful producers): I’m not 100% sure this release has made it to the US yet or at least we haven’t seen it as much as the 2012 that’s been around. Interesting because all of the hype for many years has been around the ‘08 and I don’t remember anyone telling us we need to look out for the ‘13 but on this trip we’re hearing it a lot more. A vintage that is meant to be very long lasting. Earlier in the day we’d tried the Rare ‘13 and here again there’s just a great acid backbone to these wines. Really young and needs a lot more time. But overall great stuffing.

Decanted for an hour. There’s an obvious divide between structure and primary, yet this remains very delectable and quite elegant. Structured. Long. There’s vibrant, fine tannins and a full body, that has bass and treble notes. A gorgeous profile. Blackberries, hot chocolate, char-siu, cherries and red lava. This truly unfolds… Drink 2024 - 2038.

The 2019 iteration of Ridge's Three Valleys cuvée is an opaque ruby blend of 73% Zinfandel, 13% Petite Sirah, 10% Carignan, 3% Mourvèdre and 1% Alicante Bouschet. Uncorked, poured and tasted over a three hour period, it fully opens after the first 90 minutes to reveal a ripe package of blackberries, Luxardo cherries, white pepper, allspice and bramble leaf. Medium-to-full-bodied, low in acidity and with well-integrated alcohol (14.5%), it incorporates a judicious amount of American oak that adds a whiff of eucalyptus but does not overpower the aromas or flavors. The tannins are medium in weight and silky-textured, making for a round wine that is voluptuous on the mid-palate and smooth on the lengthy finish. While ripe, this Zin-based blend is restrained and is a joy to drink. It should be at its best over the next five years. Drink now-2027.

2/24/22, 9:53 AM - Do you know what lot this was from?

For the 2006 vintage, lots that start with 2010 include 50% Riserva juice. Lots that start with 09 and are under 120 have 0% Riserva juice, lots above 09.120 include 30% Riserva juice. The first two numbers are the year, the second number is the calendar day. This is true for bottles and mags. At Produttori each bottling day is assigned a lot number, but there are in reality only three unique 'lots' in the sense most commonly used.

Denijsd writes below "This wine hasn't reached full maturity yet but is highly enjoyable already".

But that is the problem. Something really major took place in the style of left-bank wines after 2005-2009. That change was largely brought about by the influence of a noted American wine critic, who was brought up on Rhone wines, where fruit had to dominate over structure. Since that time, global warming has served to intensify this mode. So we have with all good Claret vintages, 2014 and upwards, forward fruit and accessibility.

But they are all boring. From St. Julien to Montalcino: they all taste the same.

There is perhaps one region where this fruit-driven mania has been held in check. and that is in Burgundy. Wines there are being made there of great delicacy, with sui generic qualities, from a younger generation of wine makers, who prefer style to over-the-top substance, although even the very best only register 90-91 points
Probably time to give this fruit-inspired register the big E.

1/2/22, 6:44 PM - This is a very, very interesting review to me. I purchased around 6 bottles (maybe closer to 10) of this cuveé a few years ago and drank them over 3 or 4 years. I found that they really came into their own more after about 3 years, but was not sure if that sentiment might be shared by others. This house has decidedly changed their style immense from the mid-2000's when it was released as white star and in my opinion had less personality and house style and more generic character.

Have you had any of the most recent releases of this wine? Do you feel that hanging onto bottles for 10, 15 years would be worth my while from the most recent release? As someone who can appreciate a solid Champagne I have been very, very curious about the longevity of this wine particularly with more recent releases...

Deep ruby with a slight orange rim. Attractive sultry aromas of chocolate-mocha, dried earth, ripe blueberries and blackcurrant with a graphite note - almost Pauillac. A soft velvety texture, almost plush, with opulent flavours of chocolate and coffee, tobacco and pencil lead along with fine, powdery tannins. Some layers of complexity this harmonious wine has a heady intensity yet isn't punchy or showy. Certainly modern, this may not have the density and components of a more prestigious wine but is a fine and more-ish example to be enjoyed now. Wow, to think this bottle was purchased within the last year for $15... this is a beautiful aged Bordeaux. A cabernet Franc component comes through along with mostly Merlot, bringing nice perfumed dark fruits with tobacco and secondary flavors of forest floor and cigar box with graphite. The finish is nice, and lasts about 30 seconds.

Extremely well put together considering this is a second wine, and one of the better purchases I have made recently. Drink now +2 or more years. There is good fruit here, but I'm not sure whether this is a more traditionally made (i.e. not fruit bomb) Bdx or whether it is more modern and the fruit is just beginning to fade.

There seems to be a bit of tart apple on the palate as well. The nose is lychee. The color is a bit darker than a young Gewurz. No sugar and no real apparent sweetness. I bought this when Jean Trimbach was in NY about 5-7 years ago. Holding to age a bit was definitely worth the wait. Glad I have more.

Decanted 1.5 hrs. This is a complex, well intergrated wine that comprises plum, boysenberry, cedar, and baking spice onto a medium weight frame. The finish was somewhat drying and of decent length.

This wine was somewhat overpowered by our pot roast dinner, which surprised as I expected this wine to be bigger. Would go better with a pasta dish and if served with other wines should not be served behind "big wines".

Big Bordeaux VIII : 1990 (Kevin's house): Lots of stones and minerals. Rocks and acid. There is an oxidized quality that adds complexity and is not significant. I really like this style and wish that white Bordeaux was more available around here.

1/17/15, 3:47 PM - Hey, I see that you have tried this wine recently. I have some in my cellar; I do enjoy a well-aged Bdx blanc and appreciated the oxidized character (like I love my 15+ year old Lopez Rioja Blancos' oxidation)... but it seems that between the three of you at this tasting only one had much to say on when to drink. Do you think this wine is in any danger of going over the hill or start fading soon? Or do you think it will gain any character or complexity in the coming few years? Trying to decide if I want to hold this or not... last bottle.

Big Bordeaux VIII: 1990 Retrospective with Montrose, LMHB, PB, LP, and more (Rocknroller's (Kevin & Vicki's Place)): Deep gold color. PNP, drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. This certainly improved with time in glass and displayed some charming complexity. The nose is citrus, citrus zest, nutty. The palate is full bodied and bold with citrus, apple, nutty, and an oxidative character. Large scaled and burg-like.

Cellared since release. This bottle was L 9.141, and thus apparently did not contain any of the single vineyard wine in it. Attractive nose of tar and roses; mouth still somewhat tannic, but not too tannic, with dark chocolate flavors and some sensuality.

3/14/14, 4:00 PM - Hey there - just checked your note out... I have 2 more bottles of this wine myself. Just wanted to clarify your comment on not containing any of the Riserva juice. Your wine, with L 9.141 on the label, actually contained 30% Riserva wine. I have verified this through multiple sources. Just for your edification! :)

"The situation with the 2006 Produttori Barbaresco is unusual. As is typical, the grapes from the 9 crus were vinified separately. The decision not to bottle these as separate riserva cru wines was made later than usual, after some lots of the regular Barbaresco were bottled and sold.

In particular, the regular Barbaresco is usually bottled in 3 batches. Each batch is bottled over several days, so has multiple lot numbers. Usually all batches are from the same blend, but in 2006, there was no riserva cru juice in the first batch, 30% riserva cru juice in the second batch, and 50% riserva cru juice in the third batch. From all the reports, I belive these are the 3 batches made of 2006 Barbaresco:

    Batch 1 (no riserva juice): Lots 9.097, 9.099, 9.105, 9.113.
    Batch 2 (30% riserva juice): Lots 9.120, 9.125, 9.141.
    Batch 3 (50% riserva juice): Lots 10.144, 10.148, 10.155, 10.161.

Lot number x.y means x is the year of bottling (e.g. 9=2009, 10=2010) and y is the day of bottling during that year. Thus, lot #9.097 means the wine was bottled on the 97th day of 2009, that is, March 7, 2009.

The lot number can be found at the bottom of the back label."

Tasted non blind at a wine dinner.

Dark garnet color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of soapstone, spices, pepper, currants, berries and plums. Flavors of berries, raspberries and cherries. Bright acidity, medium tannin, full bodied. Drink or hold. This bottle was really singing on this occasion.

2/7/14, 7:24 AM - I see you say drink or hold here... As I have only one bottle, I would like to ask - do do you feel this wine has hit its plateau? Do you think it has yet to hit its peak/plateau? If so, how far out do you think it is from peak? Or (unlikely I would think, given the hold recommendation) do you believe it has started to decline? I do like my wine mature, but not over the hill. I love your tasting notes, it seems we have similar palates... And appreciate any insight you can give here.
