Bienvenue a Champagne

Les Crayeres, various restaurants, Les Avises and a many wonderful producers

Tasted April 20, 2023 - April 29, 2023 by MC2 Wines with 789 views

Introduction

It’s a little bit criminal that this is the first visit since I’ve loved the wine for years and it’s not like we don’t travel for our wine habit. And yet…. I let it wait. After so many others. So we were definitely due and while I’d hoped we could do it for the 40th COVID intervened and then life and so this year we just made it happen and I’m so very glad we did. It was a fantastic trip from start to finish. Often I find it takes us a trip or two to find our stride with a new wine region and to understand the food scene and find the places that we really love but here I think we did pretty well right from the beginning (many thanks to the many folks who provided us with all of the good recommendations).

Flight 1 - Welcome (1 note)

A good friend of ours many years ago said if you go to champagne you must stay at Les Crayères. It stuck with me and when we planned this trip we took that advice for 6 nights. Great advice. I’m completely charmed. I travel a lot for work and this is in my top hotels ever. Partially for the welcome.

N.V. Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) Champagne Brut Concordia France, Champagne
Wine is so much about time and place and after almost 24 hours of traveling from NY to Jax to Atlanta to Paris to outside Paris for wine storage to (finally) champagne to arrive at the hotel and be escorted into the bar and served bubbly wine was exactly right. My memory of this wine has little to do with the wine and just how very happy I felt at the moment to be starting a trip that we’d been planning for a long time and that promised to be a great time to reconnect with old friends and to learn more about a passion. The wine itself is totally fine. In a trip with lots of great champagne it is neither the best nor the worst bottle. But it was very enjoyable this day.

Flight 2 - Opening dinner @ Le Jardin (3 notes)

First night in Champagne after a bit of travel around Paris to pick up some wines and so it was nice to take a little jaunt down the hill to the restaurant on property. We were managing between a fish for two and a steak for two and probably were a bit easier on the later than the former but all great wines.

N.V. Pierre Gerbais Champagne Extra Brut La Loge France, Champagne
I want to have a strong opinion because I love the producer and we ordered this off the list at Le Jardin at Les Crayeres and so we should know and honestly right at the end of the night it started to show the way I wanted it to (please tell ppl not to put your champagne on ice). It’s interesting and herbal and different and lovely but it was just in those last few sips and most of the night my friends thought I ordered a more ordinary champagne. Alas.

I thought maybe this wine could live forever but I am learning maybe 25 years is the sweet spot. At least this poured with a nose that jumped out of the glass and then it was lovely the entire time and still great but not necessarily better than it was originally. All meat, pan drippings, acid, and structure. Beautiful. I could drink this ever night and twice on Tuesday. But it’s in that spot now.

N.V. Marie-Noëlle Ledru Champagne Grand Cru Brut Rosé France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
Ok - we’re in true unicorn wine territory. I’ve seen Marie Ledru but never the rose and now we’re in champagne and they haven’t marked up her bottles the same way. It was bright and lovely but also not something that jumped out. I wish we’d try it again.

Flight 3 - Tasting @ Bereche (7 notes)

One of the visits I was most excited for and it didn’t disappoint at all. We’ve drunk these back to the 90’s but it’s very hard to find that wine. One I’ve quietly been building up. A truly excellent visit and a great way to start our stay.

Sharp and bright and fruit. Very crisp. Very pretty. I like this a lot. Not a wine we see enough in the US

1/3 of each of the major grape varietals. Base 2020. So very easy to drink. I remember a few times this wine has blown me away and what it is is if it’s a bad year they just supplement with extra reserve wine. 2020 is a good year and still this is great. It’s Bereche, they make great wine. Mineral and fresh and structured but mostly young (the difference with the great NV where the reserve is more apparent). Drinking well but needs more time.

2017 Bérêche et Fils Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut Cramant France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
5 years of age on the lees from the chateau. One of our favorite visits and we were basically just charmed by the wine but how you could not be? 5 years of age on the lees. A lot of citrus. A lot of crispness. It wasn’t our overall group’s favorite but I can see how it was super appealing and we did have one vote for it at the tasting.

2017 Bérêche et Fils Champagne Grand Cru Ambonnay France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
Courage. This isn’t the best showing Bereche but we’re in a tasting and tour where it’s obvious that Bereche makes great wine and then you are tasting this with ppl who love the wine. So yes, it’s not 100% what I’d expect. Slightly oxidative (honestly we liked it a bit more - we love old champagne). Apparently there was the touch of boytritis (my husband’s favorite wine is D’Yquem and it was also this). Still as a person who shys from sweet wine this was just classic, slightly more aged and beautiful. I liked it a lot (and can see how if you like sauternes maybe you like it even better).

Our second Pinot from the same year and yet a totally different vineyard and structure. To me it was showing what the difference of the terroir can be. Same north facing. Same chalk and clay. But this is a wine that is neither overaged nor very developed. It needs time. Pretty, but just starting to show the things to come.

2015 Bérêche et Fils Champagne Grand Cru Aÿ France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
The vineyard of kings and yet it’s in this line up that is so tough and beautiful that this is not obviously the historical winner. It’s a bit more herbal. Very fresh. Very special for sure. I loved this. Very classic. Very beautiful.

2009 Bérêche et Fils Champagne Vieilles Vignes Selectionnees France, Champagne
I might have picked this wrong. From 2009. From grapes that aren’t traditional like Arbabane and Petit Meslier. 15 hectares of each wine. This was created to be extremely unique and extremely different. Very herbal, all bright but slightly not ready and sort of just different. For a Sacre Burger/Racines/Bereche event. Special and unique. We came at the end of Printemps and there was a bottle so we got to experience it too and with age, but it’s s very different.

Flight 4 - Lunch @ Bellevue (2 notes)

Funny because I thought I’d avoided this restaurant since I hadn’t heard the best things about the food although the view is pretty stunning. Actually we only sort of got the view as it was chilly and rainy so we were sitting inside but we enjoyed each of the items we had.

2014 Champagne Suenen Pinot Meunier Champagne La Grande Vigne Vieilles Vignes Extra Brut France, Champagne
Love this producer and had never heard of this wine so we ended up trying that. I’d say it’s not quite the same as some others. A bit more moody of a champagne style. More oxidative and slightly intense. Good but I’m not sure that I’d pick this over the Robarts or some of the others.

2017 Savart Champagne Premier Cru Le Mont des Chrétiens France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru
Also off the list at Bellevue and drinking incredibly well and just getting better in the glass. We had a bit left over and so it was wine for another night and funnily enough this is a wine that likes that extra time and age. Very interesting and thought provoking champagne that is indeed more of a true ‘wine’. Pity we are not visiting this producer but he was traveling while we were in town. Would love to learn more about the wine.

Flight 5 - Tasting @ Charles Heidsieck (6 notes)

One day we are going to grab a bottle of Champagne Charlie and watch Champagne Charlie on Netflix I think it is now. It’s a wine I always enjoy. The old ones are rare-ish but delicious. The focus of the house is a champagne I will bring to more laid back events or give friends. It’s a wine I’d be very happy for them to open with me. Prob the BdB is a bit more of a strength but I like them all.

White - Sparkling
N.V. Charles Heidsieck Champagne Blanc de Blancs France, Champagne
From 2018 base which was the 5th edition. I remember the roll out of this wine right before COVID which was probably quite sub-optimal, but the wine has turned into quite a nice one. It’s really an easy wine. Light with bubbles. Easy to drink. Well liked.
Rosé - Sparkling
N.V. Charles Heidsieck Champagne Brut Rosé Reserve France, Champagne
From 40 villages. All 3 varieties. 60% 2018 and then 5 other years because they created the reserve wine a bit late. 5% red wine added. Bright red fruits. Nice and easy afternoon sipper.

N.V. Charles Heidsieck Champagne Brut Réserve France, Champagne
2018 base but the most important wine the estate makes. It’s the biggest production. Lots of effort. Very approachable and easy to drink. Not so complex or interesting. A more standard wine.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Charles Heidsieck Champagne Brut Réserve France, Champagne
From the 2015 base but otherwise the same wine that we saw just before in the glass. This is a testament to what just a few years in bottle can do for a wine. Lovely and soft and yet you get more of the secondary notes and a bit more nuttiness and a bit more brioche and maybe a bit of caramel. Maybe a hint of oxidation as well. Overall just a much different level of wine. Fun to try.

2013 Charles Heidsieck Champagne Brut Réserve France, Champagne
From 10 different villages. This is 57% Pinot Noir and 43% Chardonnay. Very young. Cooler climate and a later harvest for the year. Still get lots of the chard factors - more lemon and citrus and brightness. It is very young and perhaps a even a bit more restrained than some other 2013s we had on the trip but with a great potential. Fun to get to try.

2007 Charles Heidsieck Champagne Blanc des Millénaires France, Champagne
A wine that has traditionally been a favorite of mine although I don’t remember this vintage specifically. Very pretty though here too. Disgorged in 2022 so given the time that it needs to integrate. Lots of different flavors. Lots going on. Well structured. One of the flagships for this brand I think (even if the NV Reserve is so very loved).

Flight 6 - Afternoon Bonus @ Le Routand (1 note)

It’s a wine list that makes you want to say ‘yes’ and so every day we tried to get a few more ones to try. Along with those little brown sugar cookies. I will definitely miss those.

White - Sparkling
1991 Philipponnat Champagne Brut Clos des Goisses France, Champagne
Off the list at Les Crayeres. This is a wine that we are drinking more and more of and we just love the older ones. It’s one of those wines that you can trust in every vintage and in some ways it’s interesting to try the ‘off’ ones because you get a better feel for the evolution of champagne. This was one of those. Drinking quite toasty and nicely. A great wine.

Flight 7 - Dinner @ Le Parc (3 notes)

It was our hotel restaurant where we also have breakfast every morning and while a nice room it doesn’t make me think multiple Michelin stars. The food really does though. It was really super. Wine was perfect. Service was exceptional. Many great restaurants and I think this might be too overlooked. As I look back at the meals we had over the entire trip this was a real favorite of mine in the quality of what we ate.

1989 Veuve Clicquot Champagne Brut La Grande Dame France, Champagne
Absolutely great wine. Always love these old LGDs and this one was no different. It’s relatively evolved in style so nutty and bready and overall excellent.
Red
2005 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Ruchottes-Chambertin Clos des Ruchottes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru
This very well might be the first time that I’ve ordered a burgundy off a list but it is rare to see a Rousseau that doesn’t have four digits and Rousseau is on the short list of burgundies where I understand why everyone loves the region so much. So we went for it. And it was really lovely. Just lifted, delicate, lots of intrigue and yet so very soft in style. Very enjoyable.
Red
2008 Clos Rougeard (Foucault) Saumur-Champigny Les Poyeux France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Saumur-Champigny
Opened and decanted and we might have gotten one of their last bottles. This was truly excellent. It’s almost a crime because the wine is much too young but it’s still really delicious. All herbal and moody and interesting. Paired very nicely with the meat course. Delicious.

Flight 8 - Tasting @ Roger Coulon (4 notes)

One of the surprises of the trip for me. I knew I liked the wine but I’d maybe had the base NV and thought good. I was more than charmed by this place. It is wine that has bubbles. Very thoughtful in how they approach the wine. Like some others they bottle at a lower pressure and I find that I do like that style. It’s a wine that we will certainly be keeping a better look out for.

White - Sparkling
N.V. Roger Coulon Champagne Premier Cru L'Hommée France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru
One of 3 of the NV by Roger Coulon. This is made from some of the oldest plots in the vineyard. 60% Chardonnay and 40% PN. Very dry and crisp and lots of brioche and maybe a touch of pear as well. It’s a classic style. Originally there’s a touch of extra acid/higher bubbles but once it’s in the glass for a few mins it softens and then that’s probably the best way to describe this wine. Very soft and gentle. Aged about 5 years. Drinks really well and seeing the price tag this is a really excellent QPR in Champagne.
White - Sparkling
2013 Roger Coulon Champagne Blanc de Noirs Brut Millésimé France, Champagne
50/50 between PN and Meunier. 3 grams of dosage. Lots of red fruits. I get a ton of plum. Big more tart than the first champagne. Crisp red apple with more time. This is all stainless steel (no oak). No malo allowed. Very bright and drinking particularly well. In retrospect this was maybe our first ‘13 vintage of the trip and one of the takeaways was for all of the hype of the ‘08 the ‘13 is very much going to be a special vintage. These are still fairly high acid and young but there’s potential for sure. One of my favorites that we tried and certainly a champagne that made you take notice.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Roger Coulon Champagne Premier Cru Brut Nature Esprit de Vrigny France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru
Blend of the three vines in Vrigny almost 1/3 of each. The Meunier comes from sand, the Chard from chalk and the PN from clay so all of the classic locations. There’s quite a bit of salinity and classic style to this. At this point it’s quite gentle and easy drinking. I suspect there could be more depth here but at this point not showing as much. Very enjoyable though.
Rosé - Sparkling
N.V. Roger Coulon Champagne Rosélie France, Champagne
This is a saignee so it spends 24-48 hours on the skins. 2 grams of dosage. Very fresh and bright and fruity. Mostly raspberries and other slightly darker red berry flavors. Very easy to drink. Pretty and still has some elegance which is a nice combination with the easy to drink.

Flight 9 - Lunch @ Grillande Gourmand (2 notes)

This was a contender for our meal of the trip in the less formal style. It was truly wonderful with the open flame cooking. Some of the best escargot I’ve ever tried. Both lamb and cote du boeuf excellent. Not light by any means, but very good.

Rosé - Sparkling
N.V. Alain Bernard Champagne Premier Cru Rosé de Saignée France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru
Sometimes there are wines which are just meant to go with a particular type of food and they are perfectly matched. This was one of those times. A bigger and bolder and more intense rose that is almost one step away from a true red wine but with just that extra hint of bubbles. I found myself liking these esp with the bigger meat dishes and when you wanted something that was a balancing act with the meat.
Red
2015 Domaine Michel Juillot Corton-Perrières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Not a producer we were familiar with but a pretty standard and decent burgundy. Well priced. Went well with the meat which appreciated the slightly more austere style.

Flight 10 - Tasting @ Voirin Jamel (5 notes)

I’d never heard of this producer before but it was recommended by the hotel that we were staying at. It’s a very reasonably priced place. Busy on the day we were there. Looks like it was a mix of ppl who had booked or who dropped in. Bigger production than I would have guessed (around 80k). Interesting to try.

White - Sparkling
N.V. Voirin-Jumel Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Brut Zero France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
Very bright with saline and lemon flavors. Maybe some citrus. Easy and fresh. Not really at the same level as the wines we were drinking earlier in the trip but this is an easy wine and to me I thought good party wine when perhaps the group is not so wine focused. Base of 2020 with a blend of some 2019 and 2018.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Voirin-Jumel Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Brut France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
Overall this is a somewhat basic champagne but it’s also priced as such and so it’s hard to hold that against it. It’s got a bit of orange blossom and a nice level of freshness. Meant for drinking in the first few years post release. 5 grams of sugar. Fairly easy wine. Good party bubbles.
White - Sparkling
2014 Voirin-Jumel Champagne Brut Millésimé France, Champagne
Blend of a bunch of the grand cru Cote de Blancs regions - Cramant, Chouilly, Oger, Alize. 4 grams dosage. It’s very classic and basic in style. For some reason the sugar stood out more to me here. Perhaps they started with a bit more. It’s very drinkable if perhaps not quite as contemplative.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Voirin-Jumel Champagne Grand Cru Cuvée 555 Blanc de Blancs France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
Blend of Oiry and Cramant. Again aged for 5 years before release. 2018 base wine. Some years this would also get a reserve but not this year (perhaps because ‘17 wasn’t as big of a vintage and ‘18 was quite large). 6 months with oak. 4 grams of dosage. It’s very crisp and precise. Feels like maybe there’s more depth here but at the moment it’s mostly sharp edges. I suspect the line-up somewhat colored the way I thought about these wines but it seemed to me just ok.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Voirin-Jumel Champagne Premier Cru Blanc de Blancs Brut France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru
Base of 2020 with a blend from 2018 and 2019 as well. 6 grams dosage. It’s classic and bright and somehow not so much else. Not really my favorite in the group.

Flight 11 - More afternoon drinking at La Routande (1 note)

Encore the drinking. Great to get a chance to try something that we heard quite lovely comments about but which was not part of our tasting of the Grand Crus. This was truly lovely.

White - Sparkling
N.V. Bérêche et Fils Champagne Reflet d'Antan France, Champagne
The day before we had a tasting at Bereche where the person showing us around was of the opinion that this is the best wine of the house. Made entirely from Reserve wines. It’s more toasty and nuts and secondary really almost from the beginning. More brooding in style. Not that bright and airy thing but a wine that you want to sit and contemplate. Very much enjoyed.

Flight 12 - Dinner @ Le Bocal (1 note)

When we were at a La Fete event with Barbara Sandrone I think back in 2022 I was sitting next to someone who had been to champagne and felt quite strongly this was the best restaurant and one that we had to go to so we made the reservation. Not what I was expecting but exactly the right style for the evening. It’s mostly a fish shop and then in the back there are some tables and you can get some oysters, etc. Great champagne list. Light and easy which was a nice counterpoint to the heavier meats at lunch and a pleasant walk into the city.

White - Sparkling
N.V. Étienne Calsac Champagne Les Revenants France, Champagne
Alas the Bereche was sold out and so we ended up with this instead. A winery that I like and that is certainly getting more and more popular with folks but somehow hasn’t totally wow’ed me yet. I’d say this was in that same category. Well made champagne. Enjoyable. Good pairing for seafood (we were at Le Bocal in champagne so that was important). Lighter style of bubbles and easier drinking esp compared to what we’d had at lunch.

Flight 13 - Tasting @ Leclerc Briant (8 notes)

The story for this winery is just fascinating and so while I’d say it was a bit of an odd experience since we were with a bunch of other folks and all at maybe slightly different levels of interest (read geekiness) of wine I really enjoyed understanding a bit more about the house. I’d met the winemaker at La Fete a few years ago and he was great and quite passionate. This was a house that operated under the same family until 2010 when the father passed and the daughters were not as interested in joining the business. So many of the vineyards were sold to others and then two American businessmen formed a venture with a few Frenchmen and brought the brand and the one remaining vineyard and have been investing their way there ever since. Amazing because the original owner turned the vineyards organic in 1960 and then biodynamic in 1980 and that philosophy has continued forward. They seem to be constantly pushing the boundaries of what can/should be done in wine with lots of new fermentation vehicles (titanium, gold, glass) that I’ve never seen before and most everything that you have already seen others play with (ceramic, concrete) in addition to oak and stainless steel. And testing the blending that can come across those.

The Abyss project is also quite interesting and while I’m not sure that I truly believe in the impact we were intrigued enough to get a bottle to test.

N.V. Leclerc Briant Champagne Brut Réserve France, Champagne
From a 2019 base and in fact an interesting fact about this winery is that every wine is a vintage but they don’t share that on the front of the bottle because these wines are made to drink like a NV so that they are more every day style. At the end of the trip I now know that 2019 was a stunning vintage and I do wonder if that helped this a bit. 40% PN, 40% Meunier, 20% Chard. 4.5% dosage. Very classic, easy drinking and light and bright. A wine that we will buy because it’s well priced for something that you might want that evening.

N.V. Leclerc Briant Champagne Brut Rosé France, Champagne
Assemblage with 93% Chardonnay and then 7% still Pinot Noir. Interesting to see the different %’s but this was probably somewhere in the middle of the places that we tried. 3.5 grams dosage. Lots of fruit, lots of strawberry, very easy to drink and a wine that you’d be happy on a hot summer’s day with some porch sitting and rose sipping. Good on its own.

N.V. Leclerc Briant Champagne Premier Cru Extra Brut France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru
70% PN, 15% PM, 15% Chard all from 2017 (although officially not labeled with the vintage). Stainless steel. This is 3 grams of dosage. It’s bright and fresh and easy. Blend across all of the Premier Cru vineyards. The person giving our tour was very clear that she did not believe the best wines came from the ‘designated’ vineyards and it was interesting because the other group at our tasting didn’t necessarily prefer this versus the standard Reserve Brut. I can see that in this instance although I’m less convinced when you get to some of the other wines and one could argue that some of the difference was just a difference in quality of year (2019 being a vintage that many are very excited about in Champagne and 2017 being a particularly difficult one). Interesting to see. This was totally fine. I found myself appreciating the ‘nicer’ flight of four that we had after although we do sometimes get these wines as more easy drinking for before a meal.
Rosé - Sparkling
N.V. Leclerc Briant Champagne Rosé de Saignée Extra Brut France, Champagne
There’s definitely a personal preference to all of this but for me I found myself liking the Rose Saignees a fair amount. It is true that they can change year to year and the maceration is a different style but I feel like they create more of a wine versus the assemblage (although there’s a time and place for both). 2014 vintage. 100% Pinot Noir. 3 days of maceration so this is quite dark and deep. 4 grams dosage. It’s all of the blackberrys and dark tart fruits. Lots of berries but more in the black and blue style. Tart. Wants food. I can see this with more game dishes or to support a BBQ.
White - Sparkling
2017 Leclerc Briant Champagne Clos des Trois Clochers France, Champagne
From a single vineyard of Chardonnay. 1.9 dosage. Lots of floral and fresh. Vilified in aged chablis barrels from burgundy. This is fresh and bright and easy. Interesting to compare to the Grand Blanc. This has more of the feeling of time and place where that has a bit more depth and structure. I quite enjoyed this though and understanding the wine.

2016 Leclerc Briant Champagne Premier Cru Blanc de Meuniers Brut Zéro France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru
100% Pinot Meunier from 2016. 6 years of aging. 1.8 grams dosage and despite that my impression of this wine was almost a bit sweet (probably my mind translating the fruit that way). It was drinking fairly well but didn’t stand out as much as some of the others.

N.V. Leclerc Briant Champagne 150th France, Champagne
50/50 Chard/PN with 2 grams of sugar added. The idea was to take wines from the previous owner (I think it was 07/08/09 and blend with wines from the new ownership (maybe 11/12/13?) to create the wine. Limited edition to celebrate 150 years last year. This was nice and old school with more age and structure. Drinking fairly well I’d say. We enjoyed it.
White - Sparkling
2015 Leclerc Briant Champagne Grand Cru Grand Blanc Brut Zéro Blanc de Blancs France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
100% chard from 4 different villages which I believe are a mix of the Cote de Blancs and some of the Chardonnay that shows up in Montaigne de Reims. 7 years of aging. Barrels are used from the Sauternes region in Bordeaux. No added sugar. This was all spice and cinnamon and kindof a different style of BdB for me but one that was very interesting. I think I might have called it a blend or even a straight Pinot given that spice style. But quite tasty and fun to have our expectations surprised a bit.

Flight 14 - Lunch @ L’Assienete Champanois (4 notes)

I think it says something that just about everyone who you mention Arnaud Lallement (I hope I got that right)’s name to says wonderful things about the man. Who is as a person. What he’s managed to do with his restaurant which is just in his backyard now. The level of generosity. And the way that he has very much made the effort to support champagne and whether it’s more well known houses like Krug or growers he has a list that is hard to rival and he clearly prices it so you will take advantage of the region you are drinking in. Also - the food is just delicious. I think it has to win best meal of our trip. Very glad we did lunch - we were there close to 5 hours I think.

I really enjoyed our tasting at this location and one of my takeaways from it was we need to drink more of this wine so when we saw this on the list I jumped on it. It’s a really enjoyable wine. Seemed to have more of the secondary style to it and perhaps not exactly the right order for lunch but we took more of a take it as we find something interesting approach. I enjoyed it.

N.V. Jacques Selosse Champagne Grand Cru Lieux-dits Extra Brut Ambonnay Le Bout du Clos France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
Always a treat to get to drink a Selosse and of course this time was no different. This is one of my favorites of the Lieux Dit. It’s got the spice from the Pinot. Needed time to open in the glass. But a beautiful wine and just interesting.
Red
2016 Domaine Denis Mortet Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux St. Jacques France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
So very incredibly young and while some Burg in Champagne seems to be priced to sell well I got the feeling at L’Assiette they were ok for you to mostly stay in Champagne both with food and pricing. This definitely needed some time to open up. Got better with time. Was good with the pigeon course which really appreciated a bit of red wine.
Rosé - Sparkling
2015 Jérôme Prévost La Closerie Fac-Simile France, Champagne
I think now that we’ve gotten to have Prevost Rose maybe 3 times in a year which is a minor miracle since there’s so little of the wine. This was a fun find. We finished the meal with it so with the meat and also with dessert. A really excellent wine always. Very bright and fresh fruit style. Intense. Likes food a lot. Drinking well.

Flight 15 - More afternoon at La Routande (2 notes)

You have to give it to Les Crayeres who got to know us quite well and were quick to bring the cookies and the champagne list and ensured that we actually did get to make quite a reasonable dent in the ones we were most interested in getting to try.

Rosé - Sparkling
2019 Emmanuel Brochet Champagne Rosé de Saignée France, Champagne
This kindof blew me away a bit and it blows me away even more knowing that this is made from Emmanuel’s neighbors grapes and in a reasonable quantity or at least in more quantity than his own wines. This is that very dark style of rose that perhaps flirts with being a red wine is probably more of a sparkling red than anything else. It’s dark and brambly and blackberry. On a chilly afternoon where it was almost raining and we were hiding under blankets to get some time outside this actually was quite a nice champagne pairing for the moment. And it’s one of the wines (and there have been a lot of wines) where I can think back and still taste it. Unique and stands out and wonderful.

2005 Ployez-Jacquemart Champagne Extra Brut Vintage France, Champagne
This isn’t entirely fair as one of the wines that really stood out to me is the one we drank right before and it was a Rose de Saignee and so it was quite intense and dark and brooding and then we went to this which just came across as a bit light and lacking the depth. I’m not sure I’d have felt the same way if we changed the order (although by this time we’d gotten chased back into the bar room as it was raining again). Totally fine, but didn’t jump out.

Flight 16 - Tasting @ Veuve Cliquot (2 notes)

Snobby statement but some years ago we pretty much confined our VCP drinking to the LGD and ideally to the ones with age and we quite like those and so there was a bit of trepidation on this visit but also a recognition that they make wine that we really enjoy. I’d also over the years heard stories about how much the La Grande Dame really did for Champagne and so I was intrigued to hear the story. For sure this is a big house (maybe the biggest?) but they did a truly amazing job putting together a tour and show and multi-sensory experience to feel like you really understand how champagne works and all of the great contributions that came from one of the original owners of the house (riddling, rose assemblage as a method, vintage).

I’ll admit I’ve been pretty shall we say wine snobby about this. It’s a gigantic production. Relatively expensive (at least compared to some very good growers that I like). Always more money on restaurant lists because it has the brand recognition. And so a wine that I actively try to avoid. Of course I should know that when you are doing a tasting at Veuve Cliquot you are likely to get served this and to their credit it was always out of magnum which does taste better. Let’s put it this way - if your goal is to make a wine that tastes truly the same every single time you make it and that has a reasonable quality to it there is a talent to that and when you need to make it in quantity an even bigger talent and the house does that very well. We have not been above getting a mag for parties where people are perhaps less intensely focused on wine and a big bottle of that never fails to get people excited. Also the story is beyond charming - she was a pioneer and the amount she did for champagne is really something. So for all of that I will say this might have been the best yellow label that I have had and while I don’t think I’m going to start seeking it out perhaps I’ll be a bit less negative in the future.

Very easy drinking and basic and again not a champagne I’d particularly seek out but I can very much appreciate the skill and talent required to make this wine every year at the quantity it is made and with the same level of focus. While I don’t think these are the best champagnes, I was impressed that they do not go with the minimum requirements either.

What a really wonderful treat! The hotel is just stunning (we had it to ourselves for the mid-day) and the food was really excellent. This too could have competed for one of the best meals of our trip.

We are fairly unfamiliar with the vintage Veuves and so I’m trying to think if we’d had many at all. This was a solid champagne. Reasonably well done. Also our wedding year so that has a special significance. Not sure that I will be actively seeking this out but I wouldn’t turn down a glass in the future either.

Similar to the 2015 vintage this was a wine that we haven’t had much of although I truly love the LGD Rose and this is probably the little sister to that. It was drinking nicely. The food was excellent and it worked as a nice pairing to that.

Funny to see my old friend. Once upon a time this was my favorite champagne. I liked the sweetness that it has and the bubbles and while obviously wine tastes evolve there’s a soft spot for this one which is about where I started when I started drinking champagne (before I thought of champagne as a ‘real wine’). The surprise for me with this was the pairing between this and the dessert. It was actually almost perfect. I have often paired more dry champagnes with the sweet desserts but there is something to be said for having the sweetness in the wine match the sweetness in the dessert. Perfect pairing.

Flight 18 - Tasting @ Ruinart (5 notes)

One of the surprises of the trip for me. The reason we wanted the visit was to see the caves which you hear so much about (although at this point we’d already been down at Charles Heidsieck and Veuve Cliquot). These were quite lovely too and there are surprises here that I quite liked in how they managed them. Everyone takes their own approach and with Ruinart I thought they did a great job of pulling out the ‘art’ in their name.

With the wine though I’ve always had ok associations but in general it isn’t a wine that I’ve spent much if any time focused on and I’m realizing that’s a mistake. This is a Chardonnay house which they are quite proud of and where their focus is. The Dom Ruinart especially are incredibly well made and just very classic styles and I was quite taken with them. I’d thought perhaps I might be more of a Pinot person but I am realizing that I am a fan of most all of the well made champagnes and have favorites across each of the grapes. Great experience.

A wine that has gotten its own jacket as the bottle is beautiful with the clear glass but then goes off in about 30 mins in the sun. Something to keep an eye out for if getting served this wine. Which to me is just a fun wine. This is not for the serious or the contemplation or any of that. It’s for a trip to the beach where you want something fizzy and fresh and bright and fun in your glass. And for that it does really quite well and better than some others. Blend across 2020, 2019 and 2018. 10 grams dosage. From 35 different villages so can truly get that right blend. It’s basic but also enjoyable.

One of the revelations for me. I know we’ve had these wines before but I really don’t think I gave them serious enough heed as real wines. This was really great though. Of course still quite young but it’s brioche and nutty and even a bit smokey and overall a wine I really enjoyed. From 6 different Grand Cru villages with generally ~10 years of age before release. Something that I will be seeking out in the future.

Base 2020 with 45% Chard and 55% Pinot Noir. 12% red still wine is added to the blend to get to the color they are going for. 7 grams dosage. Very similar to the blanc de blanc this to me is just a very easy fun and accessible wine. It feels a bit more like it hits the receptors of ‘yummy’ like when I was a kid than it does of more serious wine drinking but then again there are occasions for that. Like when you are sitting somewhere quite toasty and you’d like a glass of pink bubbles. Enjoyable. Not in the league of the Dom Ruinart but nor is it in the price range.

Another - wow - how have I missed this wine. It reminds me almost of a dark fruit liquor. Lower dosage here - I think only 4 grams. It’s really pretty and structured and elegant and a wine that seems like it might have quite a long life ahead of it. I was impressed. Very young but as I said also quite pretty.

Great to get to see this wine with a bit more age as well and very kind of Frederic to share. This was before his time and while I’m not sure you see a major difference it does feel like they could have a slight shift in style. Still, this is quite enjoyable. I like the extra age. 6.5 dosage. It’s still drinking on the younger side and quite nice. Disgorged in 2015.

Pre-dinner sipper which was just excellent. We had spent the day at Veuve (amazing history, but mostly we were drinking the ok wine) and Ruinart (amazing wine but very much this bright style) and then this was more creamy and evolved and slightly more intense. A second to recalibrate but a really lovely wine.

First impression is just young for a 25 year old champagne. I didn’t realize that this producer is a collective. The wine is made up of many of the best Chardonnay vineyards. Very well priced and very tasty for that price. Light and bright and a bit of lemon and all of that. It was an enjoyable wine.

This didn’t really get the focus that it probably should have as we’d finished our starters by the time we poured it and in fact had already poured the reds as well. Still - it was a very enjoyable style of wine. I think overpriced at this point. This is meant to be more of a table white wine. Great for me as I don’t love Chardonnay (unless there are bubbles) and so I always like to see the Aligote make it out when it’s white burg. There’s more spiciness to the grape. Fun to try.

We had been aiming for the 2008 but it appears we drank them out of that and so we had to settle for the ‘07. Opened and decanted and drank. It was a stunning wine next to another stunning wine (98 Jamet Cote Brune) and so a basically crazy line-up. I actually forgot about eating dinner I was just focused on the wines.
Red

With such an amazing wine list it is a bit of a surprise to go back but this was so good the first time we had it that we figured why not again with the rest of our friends. Similar in style. It didn’t really need the decant. Was opened for business almost from the beginning and stayed that way the whole evening. All feral and meaty and gamey and wonderfully what you’d expect from a Jamet. I was impressed again. In a sweet spot for sure.

Flight 21 - Tasting @ Krug (3 notes)

Ah - what can I say. If there was one visit that was most important to me it would probably have been this one. I still remember the first time I had a Krug MV and it completely changed the way that I thought about champagne or the value in ‘spending money on bubbles’. So to see where it happens and meet people and learn more of the story was just exceptional. Krug ties everything to music and they do such an excellent job bringing the two sides together. This was a really special treat.

It’s the newest release even newer than the new release I had only maybe 6 months ago and which we still haven’t bought any and I don’t think we’ve been offered any. This is of course Krug Grande Cuvée and so at the base you know it’s a great wine before you even try it. There’s a house style which is more toasty/bready/brioche right from the beginning. The bubbles are cashmere and almost you can forget they are there. It is pure class. Drinks well young and kindof what you expect more aged wines to drink like young. A bit more of the toasty and maybe a hint of nuts. It’s a relatively intense wine to ponder. I suspect also to pair although we paired only some of the later wines. It’s quite nice. I look forward to seeing it again. Like all Grande Cuvées I’d welcome it quite happily but also like all Grande Cuvées it’s older siblings prob drink better in the moment but it opens with air.

There are many opinions on this wine and it’s not easy because it is one of ‘the producers’ and probably this was ‘the’ year and if by chance you have some other top end cuvées from top producers from the year it’s almost like they are fully transparent and so you know what they can be. This wine is not like that. It’s maybe slightly more open and expressive than the last few times but every time I have it I think the wine is quieter than some others. This paired incredibly well and my most favorite version of it was with a bit of a lemon appetizer devised in the Krug food series. Pulled out the Chard style. Reminded me of the finesse of the Clos du Mesnil from this year. Just maybe a hint of what it will be. We have bought a decent amount and I look forward to drinking them one day but I am surprised at how shy this wine is. Most days I feel like I have knocked at a door that was never answered. Today I feel like someone peeked a tiny head out and then back. Perhaps in 30 years we will actually meet. I’m happy to wait.

One of Krug’s strongest philosophies is we do not have a hierarchy (at least as they discuss, less so as they price but perhaps we should appreciate that). This wine is the wine that makes me think more than many others that it’s clear if they have a choice between making the best Grande Cuvée or the best of that vintage it’s possible sometimes that they pick the Grande Cuvée. I mean this wine has for some time been ‘killing it’. Drinking super expressive, super lovely, just a special wine. Classic Beauty? I remember the release and with just a very few years this has turned into something that constantly delights. Today no different. It’s a lovely wine.

And an even bigger treat to get to pair the wines with food afterwards. Alas the chefs for Krug were working on their food project and out of the Domaine so we ended up going to a nearby restaurant (which I think might be too much under the radar - our meal was quite excellent). Wonderful afternoon with great conversation and food and wine.

It’s almost a bit unfair because I added the wine to CellarTracker and I tried it and then I tried it again and now I write my second note. The first time we had just entered ‘The House of Krug’ and it was lovely and we were sipping on the new Grande Cuvée and meeting new people and all good. The second time we were at a lunch where we’d already bonded about a few different restaurants and food and wine and so it was a different experience. And this time we were letting the wine sit for multiple courses. So what was very young and fresh (in a Krug sense - still that true intensity and verve that is Krug) was evolving and developing and really like a great Selosse or a great red wine it was different as we got later in the meal. It maybe softened a bit the brightness which anyway is not 100% the Krug way and instead it deepened the complexity and it was again a truly lovely champagne. Very enjoyable. Interesting to do twice.

This wine has for me always been one of the more open and expressive and immediate versions of wine. It’s probably true that it’s little brother the ‘08 will be longer lived and maybe even more spectacular at its peak, but somehow I find myself almost wanting to stick up for this wine. It’s always delivered. Always great. Pairs great with food but you can drink by itself. It’s classic Krug but almost a bit like the Grande Cuvée where it wants to be open for business almost right away. And yet a slight standoffish class to it. It’s hard to describe but maybe if the ‘08 is that super awkward super hot super rich classmate that never talks to you and you never know if it’s you or them the ‘06 is the gregarious person who is popular with all of the popular people but also seems to know your name. Maybe it won’t always be the case, but for the moment it is and I like this wine for all it brings.

N.V. Krug Champagne Brut Grande Cuvée Edition 162eme France, Champagne
It’s hard to know and so it was either this or the 161 that was my ‘first Krug’ and sometimes in my mind also ‘my first Champagne’. I remember the moment because for some years I had agreed with others that if you added bubbles than maybe champagne better than some others but one champagne was very like another and so we didn’t need to stretch for wines in that category. And then I am sitting at a still red wine tasting where it was just an aperitif and for me it was this ‘epiphany’ because suddenly I understand that bubbles can have character and age and style and some years later I find myself in Champagne and in that time I almost drink this more than I drink any other wine because always I believe one should start a dinner with champagne (and often I like to end it even though the Champanois keep trying to tell me it’s not ok to pair their dry wine with sweet stuff). Ok - so to the 162. It’s not the 164 ‘Hello - I am going to be your best friend’. It’s still drinking really lovely. Class and maybe almost a touch more elegance than the 164 which surprises me. But with many of the same Krug notes. It’s excellent. I really do wonder was it this particular one or the year before…. But still, it is a wine where I can understand how someone can have the ‘epiphany’ so maybe that is all that matters.

I am I think a bit hard on the Krug Rose. I love rose wines and I love Krug but despite the conversation that was once had where someone agreed this is a Krug wine before a rose I’ve struggled to find that in some of the earlier versions. In these more recent wines though I see where they were going (and it does not surprise me that the ppl at Krug had more vision than me on their rose). It’s still I think maybe 8-11% of PN and mostly from Ay and mostly a very good red wine area. It is originally very dark when created but they age it for some time so by the time it’s in ‘pre-release’ (current moment’ it’s salmon in color. It’s a wine that wants reflection, contemplation, time. Evolving for sure. But maybe more importantly it want food. And with food it’s surprising to me what this wine can become. It is happen across many courses from carrying the load of primary meat to cheese to a very light-meringue based dessert this wine is lovely. Different of course with all of those bites, but somehow managing. It’s your all-around athlete. Drinks very well at this point. Of course could use some more time but I do wonder exactly how these age or what they can be but also if you want to spend a meal with just one champagne this could easily be the one (an experience that I have tried a few times and actually am quite happy to do).

Flight 23 - Tasting @ Chartogne Taillet (3 notes)

If you look at our cellar the top two most represented makers are Krug and Chartogne Taillet so to try to do them both on the same day was a bit ambitious but scheduling was tougher than expected and so we ended up a bit more crunched. We unfortunately were a bit late to our appointment which meant we had to rush some. I most appreciated that we got to try some vin clairs. This isn’t something we had experienced before but it was a very cool experience to understand the different wines/terroirs/grapes. Alex was charming as informative as always. My only regret is it was too quick.

We have drunk now from the 2022 of this wine and so we’re learning what it will be and when I said that tasting young wine takes talent the winemaker said something akin to practice aka experience and so we are gaining that. First wine we tried and it was from a new oak barrel and a then after that no more of that but they are mixed in there I guess maybe somewhere. And yet the impression of the wine is very much like I am serving you a version of terroir and place and weather and all of that on a plate. It is what he is known for. It’s a lovely style of wine. Slightly more Pinot than Chard (60/40). A tough year (esp for chard) but there is a blend he wants (give or take) so the production level just goes down. Drinking well.

It’s all brightness and freshness and that wine that just wants to be your friend almost from the very beginning of time. I’m enjoying it and even a bit more than I expect because often I like to brood and think and ‘geek’ on my wine and while I suppose you can do that here (well of course you can, more than some other places of Blanc de Blanc) the initial reaction here is somehow more primary and immediate and just ‘I like this’. Drinks well.

Again we’re in Chardonnay and yet now with the different soil and the different climate. I’m not sure if we weren’t some years ago Alex wouldn’t have served this and the other wine in reverse order. He said it took him some years on how he felt about the wines. This today is more moody and more completive and yet still quite nice and interesting. If you want to with bubbles tell a story of a place I think maybe Alex knows this better than most. I can feel where the wine is coming from, what the wine is. It’s kindof special. Enjoyed. Too young. We’ll drink in many years.

Flight 24 - Dinner @ Sacre Burger (3 notes)

An institution I think in Reims and you can see why when you look at the list which seems to be a who’s who of the up and coming makers. Got some help from the bartender to figure out where we should go since I was less familiar with the wineries and I mostly wanted to try places that we didn’t know as well. I’d say mixed results, but it was good to experiment and I’d have loved to do more. Alas Les Printemps was the week before and so the list was quite a bit drunken down.

As for the food - if you like a good smashed burger (like me) then you would probably have enjoyed your food and I thought the meatball appetizers were also quite good. For those who like the big and thick and juicy style burger these are not that.

A recommendation we received along the way for a very small house that is just starting to make Champagne. There is a hint of the Krug style to this - from the very beginning more bready and toasty and brioche and a bit more comfort with the secondary flavors early that I notice in the Grande Cuvée. It’s perhaps a touch more sharp with the acid. An interesting and kindof fun wine to get to try off the list at Sacre Burger.

The only tour which truly went vineyard to production to aging to library. As we started a bit late and this was our day that was quite packed in I wouldn’t have minded if we’d skipped some of the more standard pieces but I really appreciated the chance to get to walk in Clos does Goisses and understand that part and how it feeds into the rest. Every time I have these wines I’m reminded that I really do enjoy them. They’re another producer probably too under the radar for me. Bigger house but also with a grower mentality. We’ll need to keep an eye out a bit more for them going forward. Unfortunate that we didn’t try any of the roses as I feel like those have especially been more interesting to me in the past.

Flight 27 - Tasting @ Rare (2 notes)

Probably the more accurate description is a tour which shared both Piper and Rare but a tasting that focused truly on Rare. In 2018 a decision was made to make Rare its own brand but the execution of that is still in progress (and in fact in CT it would be quite impossible to find ‘Rare Champage’ if you searched and so having Piper as part of the name is very helpful). We were very lucky to try the pre-release 13 and here we learned just how much hype and potential the ‘13 has for some folks. I had not before this trip heard it compared to the ‘08 but it was quite an interesting tasting. I’m intrigued to see where these go.

Rare started in 1976 (so not as long of a history as the others which was part of the fun of seeing what exists with the other wines as well). 11 vintages released. I suppose ‘13 will make it 12. So they have been careful at holding back. I could imagine though that there might be more coming in these mid 2010’s.

It’s a champagne that splits me. On the one hand I think it has the bling appeal and marketing that is not for the serious wine lover and I imagine that is a decent amount of sales. On the other hand the wines are actually quite good and somewhat under-rated I think.

To be truly accurate this wine is now it’s own house and no longer part of Piper Heidsieck but the name is such that it’s quite hard to figure out how to do that since Rare is so common of a name and so I’ve just continued the same designation it has for others. Wine will be released tomorrow to the press and then rolled out slowly through the world so this was a very early preview for us. 70% Chardonnay but mostly from the Montaigne de Reims and so not the classic champagne style which often comes from Cote de Blanc. I get lots of crystallized ginger, a bit of orange blossom, some orange peel. Good freshness and lots of acid and structure. VERY young but you might expect that as it was disgorged quite recently. Nice crisp style. A wine to keep an eye out for. Drinks through 1960

While the dosage has decreased on these they are still dosed in a way that should make for some interesting aging ahead (8 gr/liter).

Flight 28 - Tasting @ Emmanuel Brochet (5 notes)

How to describe this? It was such a treat and it’s a huge thanks to many people for making it happen. Emmanuel is making some of the best wine in champagne quite clearly and as such I’m sure is totally overrun with requests. He said he mostly sees trade folks but it’s enjoyable for him to spend some time with the end consumer as well since that is often so much further away from his day to day. We spent many hours (in fact missed our dinner appointment but completely worth it). There is clear focus in these wines. They are more in the crowd where they need time to open and you can have a bottle one day and go back the next and it is perhaps even better. Small quantities and we got to try wines that I’ve never seen offered before. I love the entire line-up (including the Rose which are not his grapes but it’s still a really thoughtful wine). These are more for contemplative situations. Emmanuel himself is quite bright and despite it being perhaps our 13th or 14th tour I felt like I was still learning new things around the importance of humidity at different points in the process or the length of drop when wines are going into the press or even how to think about where in a vineyard each grape should be planted based on their preferences and sturdiness. Fascinating conversation. Didn’t hurt that the wines were some of my favorites of the trip.

This is the only one of his champagnes that I was really familiar with before we left for the trip and it’s the wine that got me wanting to go visit. I sense he might be a bit under radar (which is ok since there are very few hectares of vines) and that when that changes even just a bit more these will mostly be impossible to find (much like the smaller plot ones). This is a living and breathing wine that continues to change in the glass and was almost completely different when we went back after having gone through the whole line-up. Bases is 2019 but there is 20% of the 2018 as well. We were just talking gin and describing the cycle and I almost get some juniper in this wine as well. More spice notes. Apricot and peach. Very approachable now and yet always changing. A wine to mull over an evening. Beautiful.

Again really interesting and a wine that keeps evolving in the glass which makes you want to spend more time with it. Lovely.

Again no dosage here. Tons of freshness and tons of flavor. Saline and mineral and bright and very crisp but with somehow still the softer style of bubbles. It’s a wine that likes to keep changing again and different flavors peak at different times. All very enjoyable though.

2020 Emmanuel Brochet Champagne Rosé de Saignée France, Champagne
We had the 2019 earlier in the week at Les Crayeres but this is the more recent release. Disgorged in Jan of 2023. Vines were planted back in 1965-8. Again all blackberry and jam and yet fresh and prettty. 2% dosage. Just the right amount but there’s a feeling of fresh sweet fruits to it that is very natural. More of the gastronomic wine which would love a good meat pairing. Really wonderful.

2009 Emmanuel Brochet Champagne Les Hauts Chardonnays Extra Brut Millésime France, Champagne
Quite possibly my wine of the trip. This was just awesome. There’s that age that comes with time and while this is by no means old it has a few more years on the wines than some others. A warmer vintage and perhaps not as much for long term aging and yet there’s something so classic about the styling and the structure and the overall impression. Hints of burnt caramel. I am not describing it well but this was just one of those wines that makes you sit up and take notice because it was so interesting. Had been opened the day before and was very well evolved. Lovely.

Flight 29 - Dinner @ Le Stelvio (2 notes)

We had to pull an audible with this one since we’d had such a great tasting with Emmanuel that we were not going to make our original reservation time and Le Why Not was not able to accommodate. Many thanks to the folks at Les Avises who found this place which was actually just kindof perfect for dinner. A bit of a Italian to mix up the French and very easy and laidback place but with great food.

We seem to be a group who quite enjoys our Rose champagne and with some Italian food for dinner this was an easier style to pair. I would say good and solid and generally well priced. We’d just finished an Emmanuel Brochet tasting a few hours before and this didn’t stand out the way that his wines did but it was solid and easy to drink.

2013 Dom Pérignon Champagne France, Champagne
I’m not 100% sure this release has made it to the US yet or at least we haven’t seen it as much as the 2012 that’s been around. Interesting because all of the hype for many years has been around the ‘08 and I don’t remember anyone telling us we need to look out for the ‘13 but on this trip we’re hearing it a lot more. A vintage that is meant to be very long lasting. Earlier in the day we’d tried the Rare ‘13 and here again there’s just a great acid backbone to these wines. Really young and needs a lot more time. But overall great stuffing.

Flight 30 - Tasting @ Larmandier Bernier (5 notes)

One of the visits I was really looking forward to so I was perhaps not 100% happy that our driver did not arrive on time and we were late for the visit. Not a big deal as we didn’t miss too much that we had not already heard in previous sessions but still it felt a bit behind the eight ball. Also a larger tour that we joined (I am realizing that I’ve been very spoiled with our private tours but at this point I think I much prefer them - if you are with someone who knows what they are doing you can adjust script and focus and that really makes a difference). The wines are delicious as always. Interesting to see the different styles. Here it is all aged oak for that first year. Another thing I am learning with champagne - I like the variety and I like most all of the different styles. Happy to see I also liked a number of these that were more recent purchases.

N.V. Larmandier-Bernier Champagne Premier Cru Rosé de Saignée Extra Brut France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru
Base wine is 2020. Disgorged Nov of 2022. This is a blend of PN and Pinot Gris (not so common) from a single plot. 3 days in concrete egg for Mas creation. Lots of berries, very bright, very pretty. It’s an easier lighter style of bubbles and yet there’s quite a lot of interest there. Bubbles are very fine and light and add to the enjoyment. Like a fresh strawberry field in the spring.

Base wine is 2020 with 40% from reserve wines which are split between the previous year and a solera/tank which goes back to 2004. 3 grams of dosage. This initially is almost a sour lemon but not overly sour but that kindof ripe but tart style. A bit less acid perhaps than some others. With time it’s more soft and classic style. Looking back at my old note I expect I found this less flavorful than some other wines and that’s probably still true with it although it is a nice classic champagne starter.

A very unique style of wine for sure. Non-dosage. This wine just reminds me of what you’d want with a seafood pairing - all mineral and slightly salty and almost the shells of the fish themselves. Lots more acid here. Very bright. Really enjoyable and clearly distinct style.

2015 Larmandier-Bernier Champagne Grand Cru Les Chemins d'Avize France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
Wines are all from Avize as you might expect from the name. 2 grams dosage. This reminds me almost of a cognac or brandy if you pulled out the alcohol and just had some of that flavoring. Some blood orange as well. A kindof darker style of Chardonnay. Very classic and to my mind also quoi the interesting. I enjoyed it.

Glad to see that we liked this because I just bought some bottles. It’s a very classic style of champagne. At this point perhaps a bit more tight but I have a feeling that it will age quite wonderfully. Another 2013 from the trip that is young but with great potential. There’s a lovely tartness and structure and connectivity to the wine even if it is a bit young. A treat to get to try.

Flight 31 - Lunch @ Sacre Bistro (3 notes)

Had to try the new place from the ‘old classic’ and so we booked this for lunch. We had a bit more fun with the wine list (the upside to a birthday). I probably preferred the food at the original a bit more but I was alone in that opinion and both were to my tastes quite good. Worth trying the fried shrimps to start. Great champagne pairing.

N.V. Pierre Gerbais Champagne Extra Brut Rosé Beauregard France, Champagne
Off the list at Sacre Bistro and quite enjoyable to me although probably the wine that we should have looked to end with rather than the starter. It’s the darker form of rose. More almost brambly and darker fruits (think blackberry). I find myself quite liking this style esp as I imagine pairing it with food. The wine evolved a lot and actually I think was drinking it’s best after more than an hour in the glass.

2017 Georges Laval Champagne Premier Cru Les Hautes Chevres France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru
A side by side comparison between this and the Roger Coulon Le Synode which is also 100% Meunier. These just need a lot of time in the glass and this one was no different. Opened and it was almost startled to be getting poured and was a bit closed and maybe even a bit off putting at first. But with time a bit more interesting and more time a bit more interesting still. I found myself conflicted on which I liked better. The Synode was more oxidative. This funnily enough came across as quite fresh in comparison. But it was never quite as interesting. Still a good wine. I’m glad we had it. I’m also glad to see that we have a few coming.

One of the producers this trip that really spoke to me and probably one of my ‘finds’ from the trip where I didn’t realize how much I might like their wine. This started off a touch tight and at first all I really got was more of the oxidative side. With some time though it opened and opened even more. Had next to the Laval Les Hautes Chevre which was an interesting comparison point. This ended up really quite tasty with more time in the glass. We got a few at the winery and I look forward to laying ours down for some time and when we do open making sure that we have enough time to really let the wine open up.

Flight 32 - Afternoon drinks on the patio @ Les Avises (5 notes)

Champagne weather in April is perhaps not the best (to be fair we’ve heard that champagne weather in general is perhaps not the best) and this year was rainy and chilly and overall not mostly weather that you would like to be outside in with the one exception of my birthday afternoon. Sadly Guillaume was heading out of town and so what we’d hoped would be a Selosse tasting was instead an afternoon of raiding some wines from our French auction winnings + a really spectacular bottle of Rare from the domaine. Honestly maybe one of my favorite memories of the trip just sitting around and enjoying the sun and telling stories. A bit of a respite from a busy few days.

It took us three 375s of this to finally get a bottle that was ok (one of the three we tried earlier in the week and it wasn’t good). It’s old champagne so of course the bubbles are gone and it’s more like a burnt caramel and nutty.

Flight 33 - Dinner @ Les Avises (4 notes)

I’d say that for my birthday and a dinner at Les Avises/Selosse we were quite tame but that could also have been because we had started the morning at Larmandier Bernier and barely taken any time off. I think though we did this just about perfectly. Got a few more Lieux Dits under my belt (I think that I am really liking the Ay wines). Got to try Selosse with some more age which is almost impossible. And got to end with one of my favorites from Bordeaux. Overall all of the wine was excellent and I think I probably paid it more attention than the food although the food was good as well. A really special treat.

Drank at Les Avises. This is from the Selosse cellar with the 04 base. It’s awesome. I didn’t take detailed notes and so it’s just general impressions. This was bright and very open and fresh and all of that but also had some spice and maybe a touch herbal and for sure you could tell there was a bit more age here and a bit more evolution but still with a long life ahead of it. A truly special bottle.

I agree with the last note - this is a producer that makes great wine in every vintage and this vintage was no different. The classic Cheval slightly herbal style which I really love. Perhaps a bit lower on the fruit side but there was still some there. It was intoxicating. Great wine.

Flight 34 - Tasting @ Pierre Peters (5 notes)

We will not be repeating use of our driver for this trip as for the second day in a row he was quite late and as a result we were quite late for our tasting and so it got a bit condensed. Rodolphe was charming as always and perhaps it was for the best as we basically stood around drinking champagne and listening to stories. I don’t think I came anywhere near doing them justice in what I captured. I did pick up a few nuggets.

Rodolphe is also a big fan of white Rhône’s and we talked a bit about the ‘dumb period’ that is so common for the whites from that region. He said that often it can be true of the champagnes as well and so sometimes when you think a bottle is ‘more advanced than you expected’ the correct answer is to let the rest lie and see how things go. Interesting insight as I haven’t heard that before but it does make sense.

Top terroir should be able to produce a wine in any vintage and when the goal is to share the terroir you should produce a wine in every vintage which is the best example of that vintage. A different POV but I buy in.

Rodolphe is quite brilliant and passionate and that has led to some really wonderful wines and collaborations and ideas.

The conservatory is very impressive and I think more front and center than I’ve ever seen it. It’s great because it makes it clear that the winemaking philosophy is quite focused on the terroir and vineyards. One thing I am noticing is if you have one of the great terroirs you talk a lot about it and the soil, etc. etc. and if you don’t you tend less to.

Overall a fantastic visit and a real treat.

N.V. Pierre Péters Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
I thought this might be a new wine for us as it’s mostly not distributed in the US but it looks like we managed to try in Piedmont on one of our trips. This is very intense and my first impression is lots of bubbles but then you get more of the shell and mineral and saline and very clean lines to it. This was based on the Espirit ‘18 but with reserve wines as well. While all of the wines officially are ‘Extra Brut’ (Rodolphe never uses more than 6 grams of sugar/liter) this is named that way because it has the most of that style of the wines.

Much more round in style. Almost a hint of butterscotch. Lots of citrus. For me it was more in the orange/tangerine/mandarin style. Really accessible and happy to drink. It was a very enjoyable wine. I suspect though a few years in the bottle only helps.

The story behind this wine was fascinating. Much like ourselves Rodolphe has always really enjoyed old wines and wines that are truly quite old and so he set about to figure out what flavor it was that he found so compelling. He settled on marzipan and so he started thinking about how he could give his wines some of that marzipan style. This is all reserve wine mixed from the best large barrel, best stainless steel tank and best concrete vessel. He hit it right on. Sometimes people mention a flavor and I don’t get it but it’s fully here. A bit more of an evolved style and much easier to drink younger. Hazelnut and almond butter and slightly toasty. Drinks quite well.

A real special treat to get to try. The story behind it is wonderful. A blend of Les Chetillons and Reserve Oubliee. There is still drinking quite young and has that brightness and yet there is a lot of interesting things going on. Too often the ‘top’ or at least most pricey of the cuvées are the easiest to blend but this struck me as quite a bit of a feat for Rodolphe. Perfectly balanced. The best parts across each of the wines he makes. Really nice.

This was maybe one of my bigger surprises in a positive way on the food. I thought it would likely be good but many of the dishes I think were quite great. Another Bereche that we didn’t have with our tasting that I am quite a bit fan of. This one is always quite nice and more of the Pinot styling and a bit more reasonable for the price point. A wine that needed some time to open up and with perhaps a bit less ice or more time in the glass but a bottle goes fast around 6 ppl. Still, I liked it.

This is a wine that is in the heart of all of us. I still remember our 2017 dinner (Grenache with Panache) which had an embarrassment of the wine. It has since become really truly for the special occasions but sometimes it’s great if you find it at a semi reasonable price to say hi. I won’t say this was a perfect bottle (my choice - I tasted). There was just the slightest hint of Brett in the background. But the thing is it worked for the wine. Very in balance. Added some gaminess to that pure clarity of fruit that he has. A perfect combination. My only regret is that we didn’t do the side by side.

Flight 36 - Tasting @ RL Legras (2 notes)

Perhaps a bit off the beaten track but I’ve been buying their wine from Envoyer for some years not and it works very well as a ‘house champagne’ and their higher end wine is something we’ve quite enjoyed (I remember once having a 1990 off the menu at Maialino a few years ago). So a winery that we’ll continue to keep an eye out for and fun to see the history (they make a lot of the house champagne for some pretty serious wine locations). Very classic blanc de blanc style.

These are easy to buy and easy to drink and truly great for the price point. You can understand how such big names want this as their house bubbles. The light and bright and slightly citrus and very easy all there. I think I’ve said it before but for me if we were to have a house bubbles this would likely be it because it is so enjoyable and with a great QPR.

A bottle that jumps out quite a bit at you. It’s funny because we’ve been ordering these for awhile but they always go to our offsite and we’re letting them age so I don’t think I’ve ever tried one save for the 1996 magnum that we got a few years ago that was much too young since it had just been disgorged. Something to look forward to. The wine is well made and well structured. Last tasting of the trip and somehow the note taking went a bit awry so I didn’t take any detailed ones on this. My impression though was good. Good potential to age. Nice style of chard that is a bit lighter and brighter and easy.

Closing

And so we come to the end. After ten days of which 8 had tasting appointments I think it’s fair to say that we are ok to be going home. But what a truly special treat this whole trip was.

In contention of Wine of the Trip - 2009 Emmanuel Brochet Les Hauts Chardonnay, RP04 Selosse Cote Faron, 2014 Bereche Ay, 2013 Roger Coulon Millesme, 2016 Monsieur Victor Pierre Peters, 1998 Jamet Cote Brune, 2010 Rayas, 2008 Clos Rougeard…. It’s actually quite hard to imagine or to pick. When you start to write them all down it was just an embarrassment of riches.

My big surprises were at Roger Coulon and Ruinart.

My favorite visits were likely Emmanuel Brochet or Krug although I think Pierre Peters needs to be up there too. Completely different styles all three and each wonderful and charming in their own way. Even places where the wine perhaps didn’t speak as much were so amazing for their experience.

Alas I don’t think we found our ongoing driver for the next time we are back so suggestions always welcome.

Many thanks to everyone who helped make this happen. There are almost too many to name but I really appreciate all of the help and the work and the connecting and to the winemakers/owners/wineries who made themselves available. To the places we stayed - both just top notch and I was incredibly impressed at the attention to detail that was shown with an amazing amount of friendliness thrown in. The trip was truly special. I can’t wait to come back.
