Decanted 16hrs (10pm night before a 2pm lunch).

Hedonistic aromatics. Fine boned, ridged structure, sweet fruit and length dancing on the tongue for minutes. Surely at the height of its powers, but easily another 10 years left.

I get it now. This is what the fuss is all about. Outrageously good.

2016 Kalleske Shiraz Greenock Barossa Valley
Test driving this to determine whether it ought get a start on The List (as one of my few entry level daily drinkers). High stakes then.

Let’s start with the things I like:

1. Packaging. I’m a huge fan of the propriety bottle and I’m a sucker for a red cap.

2. Barossa Valley Single Vineyard Shiraz. When I see those words on a label it is a reflex reaction to reach for my wallet. It’s conditioning. Like Pavlov’s dog and the bell.

3. Concentration of fruit. This is proper wine, they haven’t saved money on the grapes per litre ratio that’s for sure.

Things I’m not sure about:

1. I decanted this for 3hrs on account of it being a 2016 and a bit of a bruiser by reputation. That wasn’t enough. It needs about a day. It is still as tight as a watch spring and it is the wall of savoury tannin that I can’t get past. I bet there’s sweet fruit hiding behind it that will be revealed in years to come, but right now it’s drying.

2. The oak. The label says American and French. I’d ditch the French. This style is crying out for a 100% big sweet American. I get it that French is more fashionable, and for Cabernets and cool climate shiraz American is an unnecessary distraction, like a low cut dress on Lady Di. But big Barossa shiraz is not that girl. This is Sophia Loren, so let’s get the girls out.

3. Vegetable farts. Slight whiff of veggies or V8 juice. This is just a result of a very young, big wine needing some time to resolve itself.

Overall, this is almost certainly excellent wine that’s suffering from understandable immaturity tonight. I want to try a 2015 before making a final assessment of this label.

This Cab. Just doesn’t do it for me. Frm the amazing reviews bestowed on this wine I was looking for the wow factor. My take, over Oaked, overly acidic, probably picked at 23 bridge giving it a vegetable component. I get current on the pallet and mint.

2015 Bindi Chardonnay Quartz Macedon Ranges
Well, this changes everything. My first tasting of Bindi Quartz, and boy did it put on a show.

It’s quite an individual this wine. It’s a heavy hitter, but not in the blockbuster Margaret River style. It has its own way, and it rocks.

Ripe stone fruits and cedar on the nose, which follow through in a very beautiful way on the palate. Purity and length holding hands like they’ll never let go.

Mesmerising stuff. Find it, buy it, drink deep.

Candied raspberry with moderate glycerin on the nose, quite inviting.
Delving in smooth, light herbaceous notes, though struggling to find substance to this wine. The finish was not overly memorable, lasting maybe 15 seconds portraying slight acidity. After an hour and a bit open, some chocolate mint notes started coming across. The second day open its body picked up, and the wine maybe gained a point or two, showing some reticent white pepper notes. All in all not memorable, and most certainly not worth the price, Penfolds once again clearly shows their low budget wine making style, as this wine knows virtually no new oak, and it shows... If the wine drank like the nose, an additional one or two points could easily be added, quite a disappointment after the first impression.

2017 Moss Wood Chardonnay Wilyabrup Margaret River
11/11/2018 - BBPP Likes this wine:
The owners of Moss Wood are very proud of this wine, their mailing list letter suggests it might be their best vintage ever. James Halliday doubled down on that giving it 99/100, the first time he has given 99 to a Chardonnay. Take that Leeuwin and Giaconda...

I like Moss Wood. They just go about their business in a most unpretentious way. They are bit old fashioned, like most of the best things in life are. They don’t bang on incessantly about the new age wine making gimmicks or endless virtue signalling about organic farming (even though they employ a wide range of sustainable/organic farming methods). Nor do they release a myriad of new labels that make no sense. They keep it simple.

So, I was keen to grab a bottle and see what all the fuss was about. Excellent Chardonnay, but I wouldn’t be losing sleep if I owned Leeuwin Estate. Flavoursome and rich in the Moss Wood style with a bit of extra finesse and length this vintage. This will be a real peach with 5 years on it. Not a 99 pointer in my opinion, but top notch stuff that is good value at around $60.

Grabbed a single bottle to see if this could be a house wine candidate. History means I have a soft spot for the label and inclined to see the best in it. Even so, it is coming up a bit short.

Excellent deep black red colour bodes well, however, the palate doesn’t quite live up to it. You won’t see this said about Penfolds reds very often but, in my view, it needs a bit more oak. The fruit and tannin are both there, they just need a bit of a cuddle from some more creamy oak. Length is not bad and when I’m trying to assess wine that is very young I find length to be the most reliable guide to quality and future enjoyment.

Good wine. Missing that extra something. 2013 is superior.

2nd half tonight. I was a bit too tough on this yesterday – just popped and poured and shot my mouth off…

It’s fleshed out nicely. Rounder, more integrated, more complete wine tonight. A bit rich and jammy like some Penfolds from 2012, but that’s fine with me. A few years will tighten it up and do it wonders.

This is pretty good stuff. You just need to approach it with a $37 per bottle frame of mind and give it a few years. Then it will be just what the doctor ordered

Decanted for 3hrs. Not a great cork, but it did its job, albeit for only a few years.

Some wines have a knack of reminding you of things unrelated to wine. This wine does that for me. It puts me in a cigar bar or a Jaguar dripping in the best leather or a mahogany courtroom that’s seen it all.

It’s the smell mainly (how good is it?), but the cork closure, the plain label and the basic old style bottle all add to the feel too. It reeks of tradition. The palate is all sweetness and length, berries and warm pie crust.

If I had to choose, I’d say I was a full bodied wine type of guy, but gee I’m glad I don’t have to choose because this is outstanding medium bodied wine and I’m a fan. Makes a nice change to the blockbusters that are the bulk of my collection.

It is one of the most cellared wines in Australia for good reason.

Interesting I made up my mind the points I would give and then dived in here to find it rated average 94 today. I give 95 as it tasted to me at a wine function today (against 3 other Aussie Shiraz's).

There is a little toffee on the nose from very ripe fruit. Perhaps we could say a hint of prune also. Its very dense and rich and some will object to a decent amount of American oak still showing, yet to integrate. I'm pretty sure it has 20 + years ahead of it still.

I find it nicely balanced with subdued but supporting acidity, smooth, chocolatey, highly extracted very ripe fruit and that coconutty American oak. I love it, even though I would generally prefer French oak this wine can cope with the new American oak they've thrown at it. I think it would be somewhat better with more acidity and perhaps it lacks fruit definition but I surely can't complain about the density and amount of flavour they've packed into the bottle.

I find it smooth but intense, rich, long and totally enjoyable but I do understand if some find it a bit over extracted and with a bit much oak for their liking. I just think it can sustain that and will only get better with more age. I'm delighted to find so many reviewers find it enjoyable too.

I think I get as much pleasure out of drinking this as I do anything else, regardless of price. I have many better wines in the cellar, but this just makes me smile.

That’s probably a function of it being something I discovered without the assistance of any expert review, and being well priced, and being such a faultless expression of its variety and region. I could smell it all night. Pure Cabernet Sauvignon.

Not as good a bottle as previous, starting on the downhill run with dark fruits, black currant, veering from jammy to porty, coupled with dry earth and tar. Subtle cedar, plums and toffee on the nose. Juicy plums, black cherries, liquorice, tobacco, vanilla bean, toffee and hints of raspberry. Impeccable balance; bright and lively with a superb acid spine that helps lift the flavours on the finish. Superfine sandy tannins. Medium bodied and very approachable now, but likely to age for many years. A superb wine and among the best Wendouree wines I’ve had.

Nose shows big notes of red fruit, anise, and caramel. Palate is big, broad, and mouth-filling, but not intense. Broad, smooth tannins, bright acidity, and massive fruit flavours of cherry, raspberry, blackberry, rancio, caramel, and smoke. Finishes with moderate but persistent acid and tannin. I was blown away by the 'bigness' of this wine: it's opulent, yet balanced. By far my favourite wine of the night.

Excellent, superb wine. 12.5% alc. This bottle restored my faith after an off bottle a couple of weeks ago. Less Cabernet than usual, at 61%, and 18% Shiraz, 11% merlot, 10% petit Verdot. 2014 was a great year in the Hunter, especially for Shiraz.
Colour: red and black berries, somewhat dusty
Bouquet: quite floral, bright ripe fruit, generous soft aromas of earth and twigs and black berries and olives, dusty, touch of mint and vanilla, black pepper
Palate: as bouquet, cedar, incredibly balanced and restrained though substantial, fresh fruit driven at this point, but big soft tannins, long clean finish. Dry, herbal, raspberry characters.

My first bottle of a case plus of this vintage. Too early, but such a delicious, complex and substantial wine. Black stained cork...the wine has no visable signs of aging at 8 years and has the stuffing for the long haul. A nose of chocolate, currants and dark berry leaps from the decanter across the room. Complex palate of bramble, currants, chocolate, graphite which evolved over the few hours we drank it. The fine tannins are pervasive and create a welcoming mouth feel. Lengthy finish. Buy this one if you can find it. I will open the second bottle in a few years, but I believe this wine will be delicious for decades.

Well CT readers of our reviews (the few of you that can handle our short books on each bottle) here it is, our Bin 389 review. After mentioning this King of Juice in numerous other Notes & Reviews, we finally get around to setting this one out on its own...

Drank after a two hour aeration, which allows one to take in its gorgeous whiff from half a room away, this big buttery red offers structure, richness, depth, complexity to describe it differently from the first sip to the last. Dry & still tight, it has girth, body; rack-able for another 10+ years. Muscular in its density, there's a lot to chew on here. Yet it is immediately approachable. A touch of dark chocolate on the finish. Big and delicious! You’ll be pleased with Bin 389 as a vin, BUT… pick up a better vintage! - maybe it was just this bottle.?.

We have been enjoying Bin 389 for decades, and each bottle, in general, became more legendary, more representative of what we LOVE in Aussie blends. Bigger. More story-worthy.

Until this one.

Maybe this is the only 2010 we have ever had. Maybe we do not know how this bottle was stored for 4 years before we brought it home.

Maybe 2010 was just not Penfolds’ best 389 year.?. We have not done the research.

Our score reflects what we think of this bottle after drinking it, not of this vin, enjoyed since 2001. It only reflects what we thought of this OK bottle.

But Bin 389 is such a pertineer perfect wine, that an OK Bin 389 scores 91, where the 389 WE remember is more of a 93-or-so pointer…

So glad we have a dozen of these in various vintages in the cellar. And honestly, we are glad they are NOT 2010s.

In general, not this bottle, but in general, this is our GO TO wine for a standard-bearing delicious big bold buttery red.

A side-by-side comparison of 2 of Australia’s top Cabernets (outside of Margaret River). Wynn’s John Riddock from Coonawarra vs Penfolds 407 multi-region blend. Both from the 2013 vintages. The Coonawarra has a Langton’s Classification of ‘Exceptional’ (Aus 1st Growth equivalent) and is roughly $125 vs the ‘Excellent’ Classification of the Bin 407 which retails around $80. Day 1: on the eye and nose, these were near identical and I would struggle to tell them apart in a blind tasting. Palate-wise the Coonawarra was the clear winner- with more regional distinction (given the single location) and textural pleasure. The 407 seemed somewhat one directional and missing a mid palate- nothing really interesting going on. Day2 however seemed to put the two on a level playing field. The 407 had opened up more to reveal beautiful dark berry fruit, cassis, bay leaf and mint chocolate. Overall, there is no clear winner for me – both are very elegant wines from Day 2 onwards. 95 points for both.

2001 Penfolds Cabernet Sauvignon Bin 707 South Australia
Never had a bigger, silkier, more alluring, bolder, more buttery Cab (or any wine, for that matter) than this Bin 707 on this day. Absolutely Monumental. This bottle, this moment was the only time we ever experienced a wine move like Grand Marinier in the glass... Mesmerizing to watch it roll; the legs went on like Elle Macpherson's; the bold strength of the juice, like another Aussie, Mr. Jackman...

Simply put, the best bottle of wine we've ever had. Completely outclassed what we'd enjoyed before or since. Years later, we are still talking about this wine. We kept the bottle and didn't put any other vin in the glasses until we cracked an eleven year old 389 in 2017. Bin 707 for us is liquid silk. Just incredible.

Sorry we don't have the details of whether the wine tasted like tar, chocolate, pencil or blackberry, but what we remember is it is and was, simply the biggest, most fulfilling, rewarding, mouth pleasing, vin we have ever shared. We have one more of these 2001 gems in the cellar and wonder when we'll have that pleasure!

For him, it was the oral equivalent of driving the Ferrari 458 at MIS-Brooklyn at 150 MPH on the front straight. Simply put, smile-inducing and forcing uncontrollable giggles...

For her, it was like attending live, the Vienna Boys' Choir at its annual Christmas gala; awe inspiring and moving as an event, crescendos to an unforgettable experience.

Of course, we enjoyed it at The Huron House in Oscoda for the wife's birthday, so that couldn't have hurt any wine's chances for loving it.

Purchased at $90 for the cellar probably around 2005... Now we see it's $325 - $400 per, and we understand why. That's our photo of the two glasses flanking the 2001 bottle, with the Penfolds "Rewards of Patience" book in the foreground and Lake Huron darkness beyond...

Yes, we LOVE this wine.

Put on your dancing shoes. This has you waltzing across the dance floor with your hair slicked back.

Balance, polish, silky power. How can it be so enjoyable at such a young age? Penfolds witchcraft.

Ahhhh, the sweet scent of vanilla from American oak ... to know you, is to love you.

Sensational wine right now, but it will dead set blow your mind in 25 years. I have a dozen, and a few magnums, I’ll be needing substantially more than that to cure my cellar anxiety on this one.

White label, made from very old wines. Storage history unknown. A very nice drink despite leaking moldy cork ans no pop on opening. Krug makes indestructible and unoxydable wines. Golden orange color, pinpoint acidity, subtle moka, apple on the nose and still sparkling on the tip of the tongue. Everything you want for a great Champagne. How a suspect bottle can be this good ? lower level, leakings ? take your chance with an old Krug.

3/3/18, 4:04 PM - Great note. I think the importance of cellaring temperatures etc is overstated. For long term cellaring (20yrs plus) good conditions pays off, but for 5-10yrs, much less so.

This is obviously excellent wine. Perfectly balanced, super length, fine tannins, good on the nose etc.

But I don’t love it. What is wrong with me? I felt like this after an Adelina Shiraz. These modern style reds just don’t push my buttons. I miss the full bodied, ripe fruit, toasty oak experience - that feels like quality to me and it feels like home too.

It is no criticism of these wines, but I shall not be buying them anymore. At least I know who I am though...

I am a dinosaur. RARRR!!!

This is a very well-balanced and exuberant champagne. I particularly like the sweet fruity flavors (apple, banana and honey), which work in perfect harmony with the refreshing bright minerality, plus a light hint of yeast. The wine was served chill, and I really enjoyed it both by itself and accompanying oysters.

Friends brought this over for dinner. When it comes to bubbles, my view has always been that if you’re not going to pay for at least Billecart/Veuve, then buy a nice bottle of Chardonnay instead.

This Arras does nothing to change my mind about that. It’s ok. But I know lots of $40 Chardonnays that are kick-arse, so, ... yep. “Now, who would like a Gin and Tonic?”

This is obviously fine wine but right now it is unapproachable. And I don’t think it’s likely to be otherwise this side of 2028. A tannic monster. I think I did myself a tongue injury after one glass.

It is finished now, but I suspect it would have been peaking at lunch tomorrow - three full days after being opened. Extraordinary. I would have never believed it.

From a Balthazar, cellared for around 10 years. At 50th birthday celebrations. Difficult to assess objectively under the circumstances, but was a huge hit with the guests - a really gigantic bottle of champagne is a great talking point! Wine was round & satisfying, still plenty of bubbles, extremely satisfying. Must locate another for the 60th....

2010 Majella The Malleea Coonawarra Cabernet-Shiraz Blend, Red Blend
Majella’s flagship from an excellent vintage. This is really whistling a tune and striding down the high street now. Because I am tragically patriotic, I tend to find great comfort in Cabernet/Shiraz blends - an Aussie trademark if ever there was one. Lovely stuff.

And here’s the but ... you have to be a Coonawarra fan to love this. It reeks of Coonawarra. The shame is I’m not sure I am anymore. I really only buy John Riddoch, Limestone Ridge and Parker 1st Growth from Coonawarra now (although Wynns Black Label buys itself in good years). On the other hand, Moss Wood, Leeuwin Art Series, Jack Mann, YY No.1 and the Wendouree Cabernets just keep appearing in the Cabernet part of the cellar. That’s a big change from, say, 10 years ago.

I fear I am on a path of discovery that ends in Bordeaux and, potential, financial ruin. If so, may the Cabernet Gods be kind to me for the only Bordeaux I’ve got excited about to date is Chateau Palmer. That’s a problem. A $700 per bottle problem. Pfft. That’d be right ...

2013 Penfolds Shiraz Bin 28 Kalimna South Australia
I only have three things add about this wine:

1. I took it to a rollicking Christmas party a while back. I took it along with 4 other bottles that ranged from $70-$150 and vintages 2013 to 2006. The wines were served blind to everyone except the bartender (me). The guests ranged from wine snobs to the vino disinterested. At the end of a most satisfactory multi course dinner I casually sought the opinion the 6 diners closest to me. 5 of them nominated this Kalimna as their favourite. The other diner was too busy singing along to a Dolly Parton/Kenny Rogers duet to bother responding.

2. I recently advised a friend to purchase 4 dozen of this wine to take up the important role of being front and centre in the house wine department. Telling someone to put their money where your mouth is, there’s no other word for it, brave. I get that now. But what is done, is done.

3. I am tonight sampling perhaps my 6th bottle of this in the last 12 months. It is plain now that I made a terrible mistake. A costly error of judgement that may haunt me for years. I should have recommended 5 dozen, not 4.

2015 Penfolds Shiraz Bin 28 Kalimna South Australia
I realise it is fashionable, in an inner city kinda way, to shy away from Penfolds. Indeed, I am guilty of it myself sometimes. But it is hard to maintain the rage when they deliver so reliably and one whiff is usually a summons for a flood of fond memories.

This is good wine, despite its youth. In time it will be very good wine. What I admire most though is that it is nothing more or less than what it has always been. It just does its thing without any sign of effort. A style resolutely fixed, unmoved by the winds of change. Good on them I say.

This is phenomenal wine, lush but not at all unctuous, with glossy purple fruits, incredibly, elegant but structured tannins and endless layers of flavour. Opened up and unwound over more than four days. It is approachable now. I imagine it might yet close down for a bit and I would approach this again in 2025 and drink over the next 30 years.

No detailed notes. While I like the structure, the wine is a bit too extracted, a tad too artificial with full throttle sweet red and dark red fruit and tons of eucalyptus. Quite monolithic. I enjoyed a glass but wouldn't wanna drink a bottle of it.
