11/4/23, 8:35 AM - Nice note! Sounds like this is coming along nicely! I only have 1 bottle, so will likely wait a few more years....but getting excited!
11/5/23, 8:30 PM - WBW...forget Abreu...they all need age....stick to Carter. :)
11/5/23, 8:42 PM - LOL
11/1/23, 8:56 PM - Thanks for the comment! These wines are always bottle to bottle, but yes, this was a nice one!
11/1/23, 10:26 PM - LOL...that must be Gillman....CT defaults to his ridiculous dates....97s are drinking quite well....but certainly no hurry.
11/1/23, 9:11 PM - I really think it was drinking older wines with this affected the perception.....a bottle I had previously drank much nicer. Not that 94 is a "bad" wine.....but I know it has performed better, and I attribute it to the wines drunk that preceded this one. Of course, I could be wrong! Wouldn't be the first, nor last, time!
11/1/23, 10:22 PM - Yes....he was at the tasting....
11/1/23, 9:13 PM - LOL...well, since I have you to thank, I will open one whenever we get together!
11/1/23, 10:21 PM - I still have a half dozen of them, and bought some 18s too.
11/1/23, 9:15 PM - Always nice drinking older bottles in good shape!
10/29/23, 8:03 AM - Very nice! You have some generous friends!Would love to do something like that with older VHR wines! Or in another 10 years!
10/30/23, 12:07 AM - I pulled a 12 recently too....very youthful, but oh so good! I thought it was even better than the 16....I am not as diligent as you getting my notes in!
10/30/23, 11:33 PM - I know! I opened a few bottles. with Wombat while doing inventory.....need to post those!
10/29/23, 7:56 AM - I thought about an Ultramarine, but then thought what a waste of a nice sparkler....plus, I really wanted to taste the VO
10/30/23, 11:33 PM - Agreed!
10/29/23, 8:06 AM - Nice note!
10/27/23, 9:50 PM - Thanks Mark! Was fun! Someday.....Cheers!
10/8/23, 8:50 PM - There could be a lot of reasons for your disappointment....I suggest a couple possibilities, if it helps:1. Bad bottle....older bottles have lots of bottle variation, and perhaps yours wasn't as good as others.2. Your palate is not geared to more tertiary wines....perhaps you enjoy wines with more fruit at the forefront? Everyone has different palates, for example, I have friends who tastes fruit where I don't, and conversely, I have friends who don't taste fruit where I do...so wine is obviously very palate dependent. That is the beauty of wine....we all like different things! The bigger question, IMO, is whether you can appreciate the wine for what it is...for me, even if I don't particularly think an older wine is a great fit for my palate, I always appreciate the opportunity to taste the wine, and have often commented about what a privileged life I lead to even be able to taste many of the wines I have had an opportunity to taste....finding one that actually "wows" you is the icing on the cake!
10/9/23, 5:52 PM - You thought the 1994 Dominus was highly extracted?
10/10/23, 7:37 AM - Sorry....doesn't really matter.....bottom line is that wine was not in your wheelhouse, and that is the important thing! Cheers!
10/7/23, 8:13 PM - Sorry....a little slow getting to some of my comments! Thank you for the support!
10/7/23, 8:15 PM - MJP - I only have 4 left, but I agree, will be something special in down the road...and not just for the 14 vintage! Not sure it will ever beat 16 or 18 though, but will definitely give them a run for the money, IMO!
10/7/23, 8:16 PM - CL - Give it a good decant, and I am confident you will be quite happy!
10/6/23, 10:30 PM - Do you think this needs more time? I also have a box set plus a mag of this wine (I love VHR fruit). I guess they are 10 years old.....man time flies....Does sound like I should start popping open some of my 13s though! Thanks for the reminder!BTW.....I am originally from St Louis (Twin Cities, MN now)...let me know if you ever make it out this way, would love to share a bottle with you....seems like we have pretty similar palates!
10/7/23, 7:14 AM - Thank you, and definitely will do! My name is Jason, and e-mail is jmponfil@gmail.com....shoot me an e-mail next time you come up!
4/9/22, 11:44 AM - Never had this wine, but I am a fan of Saxum James Berry Vineyard, so I am not surprised by your review or score (except a little surprised you opened it so young). Sounds like one I would like....too bad I am totally out of room (with more wine still on the way).....Many of my California trip wines are coming in this week and next.....needless to say, like a kid in a candy store, my eyes were bigger than my palate and I overbought (if that is possible!) I will need to wait to taste this with a friend (hint....hint). :)
10/3/23, 6:42 AM - WOW DQ....You still have cellar space.....I am so jealous!
10/3/23, 2:19 PM - I guess I just assumed when you talked about buying more, that you had somewhere to put it! :)
10/3/23, 2:21 PM - Jennifer, you should see my cellar...I can't even walk around it, much less get to certain bottles! It's pathetic...I know, I know.....I need to drink more!!!
10/3/23, 2:22 PM - Mark....about getting too many wines for my kids and grandkids....I have neither! I plan on living a long time! :)
10/4/23, 8:48 AM - I can relate to the cellar space, etc....LOL, and I still have several cases pending, including (and I say this for Mark) 2021 Bordeaux futures! And, I still have quite a few CA club memberships active....just can't pull the trigger on dropping some....and to compound the issue, I think I just got on Marcassin and MacDonald.
10/4/23, 8:49 AM - RE: my nieces....they will take all the younger CA wines and I have a friend lined up to liquidate the rest!
10/4/23, 2:35 PM - One persons stupid is another..... :). I bought Right Bank futures and figure I can drink them at 7-10 years old, even if not at peak, they should be quite tasty!
10/4/23, 6:16 PM - Maybe your experience or your palate is different than mine Mark, but I have found many older right bank wines drink quite well a lot younger. In fact, I had a few Lafleur that I didn't care for because I thought they were too old, and recently, I had an Ausone (1989) I thought was definitely on the decline....To put things in better perspective, I had a 12 La Violette not too long ago, and I thought it was singing! That wine was only 10-11 years old.....so yes, I would drink them that young!
10/4/23, 8:14 PM - If you actually read what I wrote, I was not comparing the two. I was saying 1989 was a great vintage in Bordeaux, and I felt Right Bank wines were not holding up as Left Bank wines, likely due, in part, to the lack of Cabernet in Right Bank wines. IN a separate statement, I also pointed out that some 2012 Right Bank wines are drinking quite well....all of this to illustrate that your comment about me not drinking Bordeaux wines young is untrue....you want to call me stupid for that, so be it! I can live with that!
10/4/23, 8:17 PM - Jennifer....I can totally relate....I have more wine than I could possibly consume, yet I keep buying old and new "favorites"....although, I am definitely getting more picky on the wines I buy....unfortunately, they tend to be more expensive too....someday I will have more will power, but that day is not today!
10/4/23, 8:22 PM - On a separate note, have either of you ever had Fairchild and Stones wines?
10/4/23, 9:01 PM - Fairchild and Stones is in Pritchard Hill...they make several wines, and Seven Stones winery is totally different, they are in St Helena.
10/4/23, 9:08 PM - Have you had their wines? Which ones?
10/4/23, 9:48 PM - Mark....maybe you should look at my notes before making statements? :)
10/4/23, 10:03 PM - FYI.....Ironically, my friends who love older wines tell me I have a young palate, and my friends who prefer young wines tell me I have an old palate.....go figure! Even more ironic, my palate is exactly like you describe yours....I can appreciate the purity of fruit as much as the character added by tertiary flavors....my palate truly runs the gamut!
10/4/23, 10:16 PM - Oh...and one last thing....I have quite a few pretty expensive wines, and my preference for most of those wines is to drink them when they strike that balance of fruit and tertiary flavors, which compared to many of my friends is more moron the fruitier side of the scale. I need fruit in a wine (although I still have an appreciation for any old wine, as I often feel privileged to even get to taste them), but I also think it is best when it has developed some tertiary qualities too. This is especially true for most Bordeaux wines and old school CA wines. I think where you may be confused is that for my palate, some wines can be 7-10 years old, some 10-20 years, and others 25+....for less expensive wines, some I like much younger.
10/4/23, 10:18 PM - Regarding Fairchild....have you had any of their wines? Not sure why you are saying they are posers?
10/5/23, 7:44 AM - Never had their wines, but received an offer. They received good reviews, but their wines are priced like Bryant (also from Pritchard Hills). I do like Bryant, especially in good vintages, but as Mark alluded, they do take a fair amount of time to develop (at least Bryant's Cabernets....their blend seems more approachable at a younger age). I will likely pass on their offer, but may try to pick up one bottle on the secondary market.....like Bryant, the wines seem more expensive from the winery, especially library wines.
10/5/23, 8:56 AM - So you have tasted their wines (Fairchild)? Which wine(s)? What did you. think of them and what do you think they are worth?
10/5/23, 5:41 PM - Passed on them....thanks for the info
10/6/23, 7:20 AM - LOL Jennifer! Yes, I shouldn't be buying anything! Yet, somehow, I still do! No will power, I guess! Funny thing is I dropped quite a few wineries where I was on lists (Dana, Colgin, Montelana, etc.), but somehow managed to add a couple (Marcassin and MacDonald). I think I am hopeless! Going to take inventory this month, should be like Christmas as I have not been putting in a lot of wines I already received! God help us with this compulsion!!!
10/5/23, 1:02 PM - Surprised this came at the end, rather than the beginning of the meal, or pre-meal! Sorry for your loss!
10/5/23, 1:00 PM - Thanks for the note! Good to hear v they are drinking well!
10/5/23, 12:58 PM - Sorry to read about your poor experience with MR...I have not had a 2008, but other vintages have been stellar. Hope you have better luck with future bottles! I would try another MR, as they are typically excellent!
10/3/23, 6:47 AM - A stellar 2017....that says a lot!
10/3/23, 6:48 AM - I know you want to keep a vertical, but I skipped 17 and 20, even VHR
10/3/23, 2:17 PM - I don't see any for 158
10/3/23, 2:24 PM - I would chance a 3 pack for that price! Even though I have been pretty disappointed with most 17s I have tasted...but I did misspeak, I saw I did buy some 17 Abreu and 17 Carter
10/3/23, 6:45 AM - With a name like that, how could it not be good?!?!
10/2/23, 10:09 AM - Nice note! Thanks for the decant info!
10/2/23, 7:22 PM - Based on my tasting of 18s during my previous trip to Napa, I think 2018 is destined to be a legendary vintage...I have never tasted so many well structured wines! Needless to say, I stocked up, but I do think they will need a few years to come together.....just my personal opinion for what little it is worth. :)
10/2/23, 10:08 AM - Nice note....sounds like a winner.....always looking for something different in a white for tastings, this sounds like it may fit the bill for future tastings!
10/2/23, 9:04 AM - Nice note....curious, did you decant?
9/29/23, 4:06 PM - Nice note! I am fortunate enough to have kept my hands off these for 6 years, so now I can drink them regularly from here on out! I know it is hard to do, but I think it is worth it! Good luck!!
9/22/23, 9:00 PM - I think the best year ever.....but never had other legendary vintages like 29
9/23/23, 6:51 AM - If we ever get together, we will need to pop a 2001 Yquem!
9/23/23, 6:55 PM - LOL......I don't have enough of them! but will pop one with you someday!
9/23/23, 7:30 AM - I find 2003 lent itself to more sweeter wines, i.e., less acidity.
9/20/23, 1:40 PM - Sorry to hear......such a nice wine when it is on....hope you have more!
9/19/23, 10:35 AM - I suspect a bad bottle....typically, this needs time for the bubbles to calm down!
9/18/23, 3:41 PM - Nice note! Fun reading about your first experience with Sauternes! A Sauternes was the first Wie I drank that really got me interested in wine, in general! So, the good news is that you are interested in Sauternes! FYI...they pair well with foie gras, creamy desserts (pot de creme) or spicy foods! The bad news is that you cut your teeth one of the best Sauternes out there! 2001 was the best year for Sauternes in my life time (I am over 60), and Rieussec knocked it out of the park! In my opinion, only 3 other producers who made as good or better in 2001 (Yquem, Climens and Suduiraut). so you are starting with a very high bar! Good luck with future bottles! Cheers!
9/17/23, 6:57 PM - Nice note! Did you decant?
9/18/23, 8:49 AM - Thank you for the additional information! I will need to open one of these soon!
9/17/23, 11:58 PM - FWIW, I find these do need significant age to shine. Have never had the 19, but 14s are drinking quite well right now. Possibly an off bottle, or an off vintage for Margret River.
9/17/23, 6:47 PM - I didn't notice any heat, and I feel like I am pretty sensitive to heat....maybe we tasted at different times or we just have different palates...either way, no heat for me or I would not have enjoyed the wine! Different strokes for different folks! :)
9/17/23, 8:04 AM - Still a baby, but nice to know it is still drinking well with a long decant! I will likely wait a few years to pull the cork on any of mine!
9/17/23, 8:05 AM - Still a baby, but nice to know it is still drinking well with a long decant! I will likely wait a few years to pull the cork on any of mine! Quick question though because I have not drank many FM wines.....do you think they are built to age or should be consumed young?
9/17/23, 7:07 AM - FYI...The wine was decanted for 2 hours before consumption. :). Nice note though!
9/16/23, 7:46 PM - Nice note - I am surprised this is fading already....but again, I do prefer their Chardonnays!
9/17/23, 6:29 AM - I absolutely agree!
9/16/23, 10:07 AM - Nice note. Thanks for opening one of these.
9/16/23, 6:59 AM - Yes! As good as the wines were, the food was even better! Thank you for the comment!
4/10/23, 6:02 PM - Hey, no matter what, at least you know one person REALLY enjoyed it! J/K....I open these wines for non-wine drinkers too, simply because they are so pure and fruit driven and plush, with chocolate notes, I mean who wouldn't enjoy them!? I recently opened one too, just to compare to 2018. I thought they were pretty darn comparable!
4/11/23, 9:20 AM - See! WBW confirms I open them for non-wine drinkers! j/k Marvin!
9/14/23, 12:18 AM - Marvin....I can let you taste a few different ones and vintages in October, if you want to wait! I agree with everyone, they are excellent, and offer a pretty good value compared to SQN (plus I think they are more approachable young....you know, kinda like the ages you enjoy...j/k.....not really though!)
9/8/23, 10:30 PM - Nice note...thank you for the update! Curious....did you decant?
9/9/23, 7:14 AM - Thank you for you response and the additional information! Cheers!
9/8/23, 10:25 PM - Hope it was bottle variation! I am looking forward to opening my one bottle, but in no hurry! Curious....did you decant? Cheers!
9/9/23, 7:13 AM - %Thank you for the additional information. Hope you next experience is much better! Cheers!
9/8/23, 10:33 PM - Thank you for the update on this! Curious...did you decant this wine? Pricing is getting crazy!
9/8/23, 10:29 PM - Sounds like you had a great time! I am surprised this didn't show better, as I think all 12s are showing pretty well! Slightly surprised the Penultimate wasn't shut down....I know it is made for earlier drinking from younger vines, but figured all 2018s would be shut down some. Nice notes as always!PS....Sounds like Bryan wasn't very keen about this either!
9/8/23, 11:25 AM - Wow! That is a big surprise as 12s are typically so accessible!
9/8/23, 9:52 AM - Nice note! Thank you for posting. Surprised this is drinking well now. Most 18s seem to be shutting down for their slumber period. Did you decant?
9/8/23, 11:22 AM - Thank you for the decant info! Cheers!
9/6/23, 11:06 PM - You need a Coravin, Jaime!
9/7/23, 5:01 AM - DECISIONS, DECISIONS! Can't fault you either way! (I am waiting on mine...) :-)
9/7/23, 5:18 AM - We just started cooling off yesterday....I think fall is here for us!
9/7/23, 6:45 AM - LOL...well, if it is any consolation, I will be the jealous one in a couple months!
9/8/23, 9:48 AM - Would love to join you and Mark in Napa....let me know dates, and I can try to schedule a few winery visits!
9/7/23, 1:19 AM - Nice note Mark! You should consider aging Aubert. Of course we all have our individual palates, but I find their wines really shine with 6-8 years on them. You may to purchase an older one on the secondary market just to see if that floats your boat!
9/7/23, 6:44 AM - I understand! Everyone has their preferences! For me, I usually like Cali Chardonnays on the younger side too (3-5 years, typically). I just find Aubert and Kistler taste better with a minimum of 6-8 years (depending on vintage and vineyard). Of course, I almost never decant my Chards either. But I think a good litmus test would be if the Chard keeps improving throughout the bottle, i.e., last glass better than the first, then their is a good chance you will like it better with more age! Of course, like I said, different strokes.... :)
9/6/23, 5:14 AM - Hi MJP.....I am trying to decide on the 2020 vintage....I have the 2018 and 2019, but have yet to drink one, as I think quality HM fruit needs a lot of time, and from everyone's review, this seems like a tannic beast! It may even be a 20 year wine to show well (although at my age, I certainly hope not! I would suspect 5-7 years minimum for the tannins to smooth out and sounds like the fruit is there, so I am hoping for a "better-than-Dunn" wine, which I am quite happy with Dunn, so this would be a very pleasant wine for my palate.I am concerned about whether I should keep purchasing this wine, without a track record for agreeability, and also because I getting older, so time is no longer my friend! Have you tasted 2020s? I value your opinion, because I think our palates are pretty similar for the most part, i.e., we both seem to like fruit and tertiary flavors in a wine. Thanks in advance
9/6/23, 3:55 PM - My bad.....I meant the 2019 HM Cab. I have the 2018 HM Cab and the 2019 Blend....I totally agree with you re 2020.....will get MacDonald if I get an allocation, otherwise passing on the vintage. I think I even passed on Bruce's wines....
9/7/23, 5:21 AM - I am pretty sure the 19 Proprietary came out with 18 CS....From what I have been learning, it seems like 19s may be more approachable and earlier drinking than the 18s, but still quite agreeable too.
9/2/23, 3:24 PM - Nice note and thank you for the decant info! I was a little worried after reading a previous review, but sounds like it may have been an off bottle! I only have one of these, so saving it for the right occasion!
9/3/23, 5:04 AM - Thank you for the confirmation! Cheers!
9/2/23, 7:47 AM - Nice note....did you decant?
9/2/23, 2:35 PM - Thank you for the response! One more quick question, if you can recall, did it improve throughout the evening?
9/3/23, 12:38 AM - Thank you! Cheers!
9/2/23, 3:22 PM - Nice note! I totally agree, their Chards are tops! Cheers!
2/23/22, 8:42 PM - Right up my alley! I bought several vintages a while back....glad I did because the price keeps going up! I saw you had one of the 2008s with DQ...hope you have more because you're right....they. bare killer!
9/2/23, 2:33 PM - Joe....I am not sure of the dynamics, but Mark and you are correct regarding the dates. I cannot really comment on 2006 or 2007, but the scores indicate 2006 was the vintage they changed ownership and started making a serious wine, Prior to that, highest score was in the 80's.I paid less than $200 (but it could have been as high as $190 for some of 2008s (which I thought gave the most bang for your buck....but keep in mind, I have only had a few 08's and 12 I opened with you). For some reason, the 10's were always outrageously priced (over $1000....my guess would be low production, great wine and Asia).I started purchasing them about 4 years ago, when I started getting into Right Bank wines and found them comparable to Trotanoy and VCC in quality, but closer to Petrus and Le Pin in quantity....I bought a couple 2008 vintages to try. I didn't get my shipment until 2020, and then I think it was this bottle the first time I opened one. After tasting it, I found some more 2008s at auction and then also purchased some 2012s which seemed like a good value, then purchased some 2020s on futures (at close to $300 per bottle). and filled in a couple more vintages at lower prices based on vintage and critic scores, but $300 is the most I paid) One of the things I really like about La Violette is that you can actually taste violets in the wine! I still think that it is not a bad value, but prices have gone up considerably. I think they are phenomenal wines, but also feel at current prices that VCC gives more bang for your buck. The only vintages I would consider now would likely be 2008, 2020 (even at $350) and 2022 futures. I can open one of these when I get back, if you like. I think I still have 2 bottles and a magnum, so you can taste it if you are considering purchasing some. Cheval Blanc is by far my favorite Right Bank wine (but have yet to taste Petrus or Le Pin, although hard to imagine they can be much better), but they are priced through the stratosphere! I guess pricing is all relative! Hope this long winded note helps! Good luck no matter what your decision is! As a side note, maybe our next tasting should be Right Bank Bordeaux?
8/29/23, 5:30 AM - Nice note! Imposed one of these early too...was nice to see it progress in the glass, but still look forward to tasting it with some significant age (probably try again around 2026). Thanks for the update though!
8/29/23, 3:48 PM - Of course, we all have different palates, but for what it is worth, I went to a VHR tasting Bruce did in AZ. He poured the 12, 15, 18 and 19. The 12 and 19 were drinking best, but both still needed more time, IMO. Even the 12, as good as it was, seemed like it would improve. Of course, that is my palate! If you have a few bottles, and enjoy the way it tasting, why not pop some of them while you know you will get enjoyment out of them...but if you believe their best days definitely lie ahead, then make sure you hold back quite a few so you don't get upset if they meet or exceed your expectations in the future!
Thanks for letting us know about this problem. We will review your comments and be in touch soon with an update.
