A light yellow colour; ripe, slightly creamy fruit (peach), medium weight, elegant and very long. Lovely now but will keep, as it is still quite youthful. Very fine.

The nose is a cleanly of flowers, anise but a little shy. So much more fruit in the mouth plus energy and that steely structure. I love this! A youngster.

This was paired with a scallop and mushroom risotto. Broad and fleshy, medium low acidity, and some ripened tropical notes. It was mouth coating and long. Probably near its peak for my palate, but can hold a while, no rush.

Quite aggressively reduced on the nose still - slightly too much 'struck match' for my taste, really, although underlying notes of ripe, creamy fruit could still be detected. Ripe and creamy were defining characteristics on the palate, too, along with honey and lemon. Good wine, but I've had village-level wines that showed better than this.

I stopped buying this wine from the 2009 vintage after having thrown more than 50% of my bottles of the 1990, 1992, 1994 and 1996 vintages in the sink due to premox. This experience makes it somewhat frigthening to open a new bottle. But this time everything was OK. And what a wine this is when the condition is perfect. The 2009 (tasted together with a 2008 that also was in pristine condition) is still a youngster. Light straw color with intense green hints. Open nose at first dominated by oaky tones (vanilla). After a while, nice tone of lemon, red apples, some peach and pear emerge, complemented by those intense spicy tones reminiscent of cardamom. Full bodied, somewhat oaky in the mouth with lots of dry stuff almost reminding me of tannins. On the finish the oaky tones gives way to more fruity tones in the vein of lime, lemon zest and green apples. The aftertaste is very long, and has that fascinating hint of cardamom. Still, like the 2008, incredibly young, but somewhat more evolved, robably due to a warmer vintage. Another immortal wine from this producer (if it's not oxidized....). Perfect match with boiled lobster.

Nose: This was decanted ahead of time as I wanted to make sure it got its due. That paid off as it was deeply pungent from the outset, filling the glass with warm oils, custard, bakers vanilla, red apples, Meyer lemons, quince, pears, ginger, creams, yellow flowers, and a touch of mineral notes.
Taste: The feel is Full bodied with well integrated, but still crisp medium+ acidity. The feel is deep, textured, and an overall experience. There is so much depth to the tones of warm oils, custard, baker’s vanilla, red apples, Meyer lemons, pears, ginger, and mineral notes.
Overall: This is glorious right now and I have a difficult time seeing how it gets better. It will clearly age for a good while, but this is pure hedonism right now in Corton-Charlemagne form.

This has a fairly deep colour, and quite lively, peachy fruit with a touch of hazelnut. A very elegant wine, with good depth and long on the finish. Good now, but should keep well.

Lean, sleek and seductive, a bracing, top-down ride along the French Riviera. This wine takes you in with its oyster-shell salinity, bracing lemon zest and hints of burnt almond, hazelnut and kir. Drinking beautifully, and will evolve over next 10-12 years.

Slightly corked but it still offers floral nose with honey, lemon zest and full body texture. Medium finishing. It should be a good one if they are in good condition.

Classic nose with butter, oak, allspice and citrus. Fullbodied, surprisingly nice acidity, a bit warm finish. Lacks maybe the nerve from the best vintages, but still a great wine. No hurry.

Bonneau du Martray managed well in 2009 in the context of avoiding premox, I have had multiple cases of the 2009 from various sources and so far none are advanced or premoxed. However, the wine shows the heat of the vintage and displays high alcohol on the palate. Reductive, big bodied with a classic oily white flower tone of Corton Charlemagne. (86/100)

A good bottle of this that's not premoxed with a nice level of acidity and delicate flavors of peach and pine. There is a nice complexity on the finish but it's still very '09 meaning a bit flabby without enough intensity and mineral lift compared to other vintages of this great wine.

Very tight open opening. Much better after 2 hours in a decanter. Buttery and oily. Some minerals. Medium to full bodied. Quite 'flabby' in that the warmer vintage gives a rounder mouthfeel without the high acidity of cooler vintages. Tried at Kame sushi

67 Pall Mall vertical (2017, 2014, 2009, 2008, 1998, 1993): light straw color, Although a warm vintage, this wine has excellent texture and cut with a nice minerality to balance the rich fruit. A touch muted on the nose, and a shorter finish than some of the other wines, but likely drinking at its peak now.

Straight, tight, precise, lots of citrus with clear herbal and spicy notes. Close to perfection. For now 93, but I expect even higher ratings in future. This wine creates a smile in your brains and in your face.

Citrus and herbal notes on the nose, not typically buttery and blousy as the usual BM CC - very elegant and precise with super long finish. Mouthfeel is nice but not overly velvety. Lacks maybe a bit body colume but other than that a great wine which has legs to go further

A bottle kept in refrigerated storage since release. Brilliant Corton-Charlemagne not just surviving premox. Quite tight and primary. Drinking much younger than 11 years of age. I plan to hold other bottles for 3-4+ more years ... Pale watery gold. After some flinty reduction on opening, a citric nose of wet limestone, green apple and lime, pear and white peach and oyster shell. Over three days some gentle meadow flower and spice notes emerged. A powerful mouth of dense, weighty fruit. Strict and austere, not stereotypical 2009 white Burgundy. Tart, green apple acidity. Lemon, lime and chalk. Some vanillin oak present but now largely integrated with the fruit. Pure and mineral. Very long, finishing bone dry.

Gylden strågul farge. Moden nese med klare sekundære aromaer. Veldig ren og pen. Nøtter og olje. Moden og gul i fruktbildet. Rik i munn, uten å bli tungt. Høy kons. Fyldig med sødmefull frukt, men med rensende syre. Har tydeligvis ikke plukket for sent i 09 - langt fra varm i stilen. Medium pluss pluss lengde. Nærmer seg fullmoden.

Impressively 2009 Bonneau du Martray Corton Charlemagne is still incredibly fresh and not a sign of premox from every single bottle of the case according to my friend who served this. Tasted blind - Fresh white orchard fruits, generous smoked minerals, smartly toasted wood integrated well with fine lees. Slightly reductive with a clean finish. 2014 Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru? Pure and focused at this stage. White flower, stones and some honey on the nose. Palate is more alive with layers of delicate vanilla, crushed chalk, oil, toasted brioche. Still has some tightness but none the less showing classic corton richness.

Because 2009 was a warm year, I feared an overripe version of Corton Charlemagne, but this was delicious, balanced, recognizably Corton on the nose but really quite lovely. Over 3 hours it opened considerably but still retained its balance and gained complexity. A genuine pleasure.

Coravin sample from a new full bottle at La Voile restaurant in Annecy, France. Pale yellow that looks very young. On the nose, this is timid, but nicely balanced. As this hadn't had the opportunity to breath, it was still surprisingly closed but opened up a bit over the 30-40 or so minutes I had it in the glass to reveal the beginning of a nice fruit (apple, pears and a faint touch of oak). Also, I was surprised (in a good way) by the acidity and structure for a 2009 as well as the good concentration, which I expected to be a bit flabbier - no flab here! Nice fruit, but everything was very restrained and barely opened up towards the end of the glass. Personally, I have a preference for the style in the general area of Montrachet (Chassagne, Puligny and even St-Aubin... Ramonet in particular for the 1st), but this is very good, but feels way closer to top Chablis in style. Would I drink it again? Certainly. Would I pay 135$ for a bottle? I'd rather spend half of that on a Ramonet Morgeot or Boudriottes or splurge on a slightly cheaper than 135$ Caillerets or Ruchottes, but then, at this level, it is a question of taste. 91 for the overall impression and 92 for its balance. I also feel that it needs another 5-6 years at least. I expect it may be worth 92 or 93 in the future, but I have a hard time giving it a 92 today based on my less than optimal tasting experience. That being said, if I'd had the bottle and enjoyed it over 5-6 hours, I feel my score would have been higher. I'll give it a 92 based on the last sip and hope some day to be able to taste it again.

A very nice Corton-Charlemagne from much esteemed Domaine Bonneau du Martray. It is balanced and very approachable, quite rich and long, but it lacks the tension and crispiness other CC can offer. I drunk this wine with enthusiasm while not being impressed, and thought the wine was good but not great. Nor did I have the feeling it could someday become great. So although the wine is more than decent, I was however slightly disappointed considering the pedigree of both the estate and the vintage.

At first, the scent and taste of alcohol seemed to be so strong that the rest of the elements seemed to be closed, but after the decanting, they showed a complex and delicate appearance. Feeling exotic ripe fruit and warm (2009 vintage)

For a "soft" vintage I found this way too primary. All about structure at present with power but the flavours have not really unfolded and are certainly there but elusive. Re-assuringly pale in colour. Lots of life ahead.

This is my second bottle, the first 2 years ago was pop and pour. This time 45 min. decant, a very delicate nose and taste on the light side with an acid attack, no tropic elements but fine tuned palet of peaches, tangerine and citrus.Had reached the plateau and will I guess stay there 10 years.

Chicago Wine Flock...Burgundy Al Asks "Is it Grand Cru?" (My home - Chicago IL): Served blind a 2nd time to tonight's group. This was the 2nd half of a magnum, The 1st half of this magnum was poured into a clean bottle and served with dinner; this latter half re-corked to be served blind (again) with cheese 3 hours later.
Bigger and more powerful when revisited several hours, but slightly less opulent and less vibrant. Still lots of apple and some peach, just less complex for me.

Chicago Wine Flock...Burgundy Al Asks "Is it Grand Cru?" (My home - Chicago IL): Served blind to tonight's group in what turned out be a CC 2009 flight. Lots of ripe apple with some peach. Rich spice gave this an opulent feel to start, but there was so much energy and brightness keeping this fresh. My favorite of the flight, as well as the group's favorite. This was 1/2 of a magnum poured into a clean bottle, the rest re-corked for being served blind (again) with cheese 3 hours later.

Still needs more time. Nose - gun smoke, candied orange, lemon. Palate - oak a bit obtrusive, though fine notes of roast nuts and vanilla, lemon zest, lanolin, spice. Fruit - taut lemon, orange rind, some apricot. Lots of acid. Supreme body with oily mouthfeel. Finish is a bit abrupt.
A bit hard to make sense of this wine. Elements don't quite knit together, perhaps as fruit doesn't seem to come to the party. With more time in the carafe, more white nectarine and white peach came through.
I think this wine might have the pedigree, acidity and structural elements to be much better in 5-10 years. But on the other hand it's not that long so I don't think it will ever reach greatness.

Lang!

This has really tightened up and is now a classic, strict Corton-Charlemagne that is supremely youthful. It had a suggestion of lanolin and lavender to the aromatic profile and fruit flavours were of the white peach persuasion. There's plenty of minerality and it is an '09 of great energy.

Monday Cellar Visits in Burgundy - Clos de Tart, Lambrays, Bonneau du Martray and Perrot-Minot (Cote d'Or): Tasting at the domaine. Very ripe Apple and peach immediately following by a fine degree of minerality and acidity that provides restraint and textural energy. Comes together as a refined wine despite the ripeness. In fact I get the identical crunchy minerality here as in the 2013 just tasted, despite this being a very different package.

HDH Auction (Tru - Chicago, IL): I don't think I loved this wine as much as others did, but it was still very good. The sweetness of the wine was the big marker for me, and, in a perfect world, would have liked it a bit more acidic. Great fruit concentration, though. Despite the less-than-perfect acidic backbone, it still had really nice elegance.

HDH auction tasting at Tru; 12/10/2015-12/12/2015 (Chicago, IL): I think this needs to be served quite chilled, since this is definitely on the fatter end of things. A nice touch of matchstick on the nose. Ripe and fleshy, but with very nice tension thanks to some very prominent acidity. Sweet white fruits and very judicious oak use here, even though this is clearly oaked up the wazoo. I have to admit, I've really liked all the young Martrays I've tasted. I think it might be time to put some in my cellar.

A wonderful Martray clearly requiring 3-5 years to begin unfolding the subtle complexities and teasing out the tropical notes from the denser core presented now( but risking premox if you wait). Nevertheless an almost regal white burgundy, and while less complex than great Montrachet, it is a contender for a great burgundy experience even now. Expect to sense retrained, nice honeyed viscosity, butterscotch with lemon, and a persistent hint of vanilla and more citrus tones.

Friday night wines at Thierry's place (Wellington, New Zealand): Colour light gold. A pure bouquet of white florals, lemon, pear and brioche. On palate, ripe and rich, with serious structure, breadth and power (we were picking the vintage as 2009 or 2005). However, the wine also has beautiful balance, finesse and elegance, with very good acids. Oak is present on both bouquet and palate, but not, for me, obtrusively. Quite forward, but obviously young, this Corton is a 20+ year wine. The flavours were citric, greengage, peaches and pears and croissant, with honey and a strong mineral backbone. A long wine, with a dry finish. It needs 5 years as a minimum, hopefully it'll survive premox.

I took this to a friends 3/22/14 Chardonnay tasting. It had a rich, deep, clean and gorgeous bouquet of herb, mint, concrete, nut, pear, citrus, and bread aromas. Hard to call it average, but this is way, way too young, so in it's current state it is just that.. Took 2 hours in the decanter to justify pouring it. Massively rich flavors, aromas, and everything that defines superb Chardonnay, but tough to drink at this point by itself. I have the '07 and '08 which are showing much, much better right now. Give this guy another 2+ years. Amazing producer, amazing wine, just a baby...

What a difference a year makes! This is showing a very primary, bright nose. Tight and unyielding on the palate but the loads of dry extract is evident. Powerful wine, a bit viscous mouthfeel, it is dense but without being at all over wrought or heavy. The power is restrained with huge potential. Weather was perfect, said Jean-Charles. As with the results a year ago, there are no sharp edges to this wine.

We were undoubtedly drinking this wine too early to do it justice. However, a lot of oak flavour which overpowered the fruit, which was a little one dimensional, and continued into the long finish that was pretty much more of the same. CT Wisconsin Offline 2; 10/5/2012-10/6/2012 (Madison, WI): Extremely light and pale lemon color. Not real generous right now, some sea shell on the nose, minimal oak, with a very tight acidic edge. Served too cold at first this was quite tight and unyielding. As it approached room temperature there was a whiff of gunflint. Some swirling and coaxing unlocks notes of mint, aniseed, honeysuckle, preserved lemon and spiced pear. It has a rigid minerally spine and is dense and chewy, loaded with sappy orchard fruits. There’s loads of chalky dry extract to the finish and it is extremely long.

A little closed now. Stronger acid than the '08. creamy character shines through, highlighting the key flavor in this vineyard (at least for me), almond paste. Again, this vintage shows very little fruit or mineral qualities but does maintain a persistent linger and a fleshier quality.

At a Vogüe tasting tonight, as a little “bonus wine”. And what a wine! This was just near perfect at this point. Such rich, clean and brilliant ripe fruit is rarely seen, not even from this producer. The acidity is perfectly balanced against the clean and rich fruit, with the razor-sharp, clean minerality stitching this together to a perfect wine. Full of lovely white ripe citrus fruits, peaches, pear, flowers and crushed wet stones. This wine showed so well tonight, but will be even greater if left alone for a few years (not too many) so that it can develop and become the stellar wine I believe it’s destined to be!

taste: full bodied with noticeable medium/high acidity. There is richness to this, but the acidity provides a real spine as well with deep tones of lemon curds, pain grille, nutty tones, and white fruits.
overall: This definitely does need some time. Still, it's a real budding beauty that should reward patience if the premox bug doesn't strike it.

Fine Vines - New Burgundy Releases (Knightsbridge - Northbrook IL): Wine tasting. Ripe fruit on nose and palate, mostly showing peach and apple. Good spice as well. Fleshier, but with less acidity and energy than the 2008 also just tasted. Moderate length. Most likely a very good young drinking white Burgundy.

Domaine Tasting at Bonneau du Martray (Burgundy, France): From barrel at the Domaine. Ripe, rich yellow citrus and pear notes with white flowers. Full and rich on the palate with nice acidity, though not at the level of 07 or 08. Quite dense. Very easy to drink now. Moderate finish.

Bonneau du Martray Visit and Tasting (Pernand-Vergelesses): Tasting at Domaine. Interesting 3rd wine after the 2008 and 2007. Shows some the ripe fruit aspects of the 2008, with some peach an apricot on both the nose and palate. Just not as intense as with the 2008. Same profile comes through on the palate, although probably just as much rich fruit as in 2008, just much less acidity and minerality coming through today.

There is so much depth to the tones of warm oils, custard, baker’s vanilla, red apples, Meyer lemons, pears,
ginger, and mineral notes.
Overall: This is glorious right now and I have a difficult time seeing how it gets better. It will clearly age for a good while, but this is pure hedonism right now in Corton-Charlemagne form.

Nice open and certainly ready to drink.
Rounded and full bodied. Lacking real mineral definition, which I would assume will come in a few years once another layer of puppy fat is lost.
Very enjoyable.

The palate was rich, deep, dense and dry with flavors of bread, pineapple, lime, pear and minerals. It was truly outstanding and our group’s number 2. My score was 92+...our groups average score of 92.5.

A little closed now. Stronger acid than the '08. creamy character shines through, highlighting the key flavor in this vineyard (at least for me), almond paste. Again, this vintage shows very little fruit or mineral qualities but does maintain a persistent linger and a fleshier quality.
