AP 04-06. Opened in late Nov with Zoe & Dale. I'm a little shocked at how primary this feels - the fruit is still very youthful and bright with a very classic Mosel red apple and citrus profile with bright floral and mineral notes beneath. It's only showing hints/the beginnings of more savoury and smoky development with the youthful fruit/florality dominating. But the overall sense of balance here is amazing - it's incredibly light and precise and I love the spine of acidity here. But I'll give my remaining bottles a lot more time before I check into another.

Day 3 I think. Day 1 this was a bit iffy - some funk and seemed a bit dumb. But this opened with another day or two. Now it’s lovely. Probably better yesterday but still very good Beautiful classic WS nose of peaches, red apples, baking spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, honey and a bit of minerals, a touch of apricot and apricot pits. Baklava. Palate enters a bit soft with honey but it spreads and grips in many ways and directions - apple and peach and tons of cinnamon and spice flavors come out, it gets less soft but it doesn’t become zingy and there isn’t a big acid feel - it’s creamy with some flesh but there is a backbone buzzing behind the flesh. A near citric steak comes out in the end palate towards the finish along with some minerality and spice. Grippy and spicy on the finish - bold cinnamon along with the apple peach and citrus. Some salty minerals. A bit ponderous but tons of good stuff with some lovely aspects. Nose - 5-5.5/6, Palate - 5-5.5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 16-17/20.

Seemed much younger than 2004. There was some petrol and lanolin in the nose but still plenty of lemon, apple and grape. Crisp, clean tastes of lemon, pineapple, apple, finishing with some grapefruit pith. Very nice but I wonder what this means for all the later vintages I have and my lack of patience.

Tasted blind. I thought it was an older Auslese because of the concentration and the relative sweetness. Lots of petrol on the nose. Great balance and elegance, slightly herbaceous finish. Lovely now.

Two Rieslings at home: The cork crumbled on extraction but the wine was fine underneath. A nose of pineapple, with a touch of turpentine, lemon zest, pear, mixed herbs and spices and meadow flowers. In the mouth, an appealing balance of fruit, sugar, acidity and alcohol (a moderate 8% ABV). Pears, lemons, grapefruit, nougat and guava. Savoury, white mushroom and slaty mineral elements. Agreeable, satiny, yet tactile mouthfeel. Elegant and clean. Mid weight. Not cloying or over-sweet (although the residual sugar is presumably quite high). Seemingly now in late adolescence. Delicious! Drink out to 2035 (if the cork survives!). 93+.

Nice soft to medium golden colored. Lots of white flowers and some soft honey notes in the nose. On the palate ripe citrus notes, ripe pear, wet hay, fresh cut green grass and some soft dried apricot notes. All in all it feels way younger than 17 years. Medium bodied with a fresh medium intense acidity. Good structure and depth. Medium complexity - but it feels quite elegant. Very nice medium long finish. This beauty is in a drinkable phase but it doesn’t show a lot of intense aging notes yet. Aging notes on these sweet Riesling wines can be so amazing that I would suggest to wait 5 more years before popping a bottle. If you don’t have the patience it’s definitely in a great drinking spot now too. (IG)

Not blind Really fresh, in the nose a bit petrol but in the palate fresh as most 2004 Rieslings from Germany. At the beginning a touch too sweet but later on really balanced and far away from his peak. 92+

Pale gold; pinpoint focus, white fruit, underpinned by subtle wet slate; exquisite, deft, delightful. Pitch perfect balanced. At peak, with time in hand.

Impeccable balance to this, with plenty of apple and lime and hints of elderflower, oregano, cream and kerosene. Didn't have enough impact to merit a higher score, but perfect to accompany a meal. Still spritely at 16 years old, of course.

Medium yellow. Expressive and beautiful nose of Lemon, white flowers, yellow fruit with petrol, lychee and a touch of pine apple, very good complexity. Not too sweet, I actually prefer this sweetness level to the Goldkapsel I recently had. Very good freshness and lift. The bottle was much liked and consumed in no time at the table.

(mostly) Rieslings and Thai (Silom12, Chicago IL): The nose is succulent and beautifully balanced with melded tones of green apples, pears, peaches, ginger, some reduction notes, mineral tones, crushed rocks, white flowers, jasmine, and nectarines. Even at 15ish years, this hasn't taken on much in the way of tertiary and developmental notes, but instead it's perfectly balanced. The light bodied feel is balanced and featherweight with a real lovely finish while possessing tart, high acidity. This is sailing along and is a beautiful Mosel riesling. This has a very long life ahead of it and is at the point where whether one drinks one or not comes down to how developed they like their wine.

Young, filigree but too sweet in my opinion in the late palate, unbelievable pale yellow colour for a 2004. Citrus and White peach dominated, refreshing acidity. Will be better and more balanced in the next years. 91+

Off the wine list at Nice Matin. Interesting. Drank side by side with the Selosse and they are very different wines. This has very much maintained the sweetness. Good acidity. Light and easy drinking wine. This time I didn't get any of the petrol side of things. More just white fruits and white peach. Very tasty and seemed to be a bottle just in great condition with little age showing at all.

One of the better 2004 Spatlesen wines I've had, and certainly the best 2004 from Prum as this is absolutely in the zone now. The vintage has been hit and miss for me across all the predikat, but tonight's showing was full, fresh, and deep. The evolution at this stage shows a roundness coupled with a delicate juiciness. Most of the rs has integrated, and what's left is an equal blend of soil and ripe white and yellow fruits. Long, clean and rewarding finish. Now or in the next 7-8 years. Easily recommended

Followed over 6 hours. Light to medium gold color, not showing much age. Dances lightly on the tongue, displaying subtle tropical and citrus fruit flavors before giving way to white peach and jicama. Outstanding, but not spectacular, though a perfect mate to Thai food. 4+12+17+8= 91

Still incredibly youthful in the glass! Nose is peach- and maracuja-driven with a basket of mixed other fruit and slight herbs-note. On the palate very mouthfilling, lively, featherlight. The fruit gets slate as counterpart. Very very minor honey note. The acidity is present and delicate with filigree structure. It´s more on the feinherb side than off-dry. Perfect balance. For a Spätlese this is close to perfection! Amazing stuff!

A bit closed from the start but opens up after half an hour or so. Elegant nose of white tropical fruit, physalis, round citrus, grass and petroleum. Smooth mouthfeel. Lacks acidity and energy. This bottle had a moldy cork which broke at opening so most likely it wasn't perfect. The feeling of far gone maturity also points in that direction. It's still a enjoyable wine but without the zing and energy. Medium long aftertaste. The elegant house style comes through despite the suspicion of a semi flawed bottle.

Yesterday, I had another bottle of J.J. Prüm, this time a 2004 Sonnenuhr Spätlese. I tasted this one before approximately one year ago and really really loved it back then, yesterday it was even better, a really amazing experience! At first the sulfur components of the nose were a little bit disturbing, the wine seemed to be a bit reductive, but after a little bit of contact with oxygen and a small increase in temperature it shows everything you expect from a J.J. Prüm wine. This one was just fantastic, my favourite Prüm and one of the best white wines I ever had. Really my style. Typical "Wehlener Sonnenuhr" flavours on the nose with maracuja, blood orange peel, green apple peal, yellow apple flesh and some pineapple notes with lots of spicy flavours (pepper and lots of different herbs) and after some time steely and stony notes. The fruit has already quite developed, it seems to be caramelized, but the caramel flavours are incredibly perfectly integrated! Never had this done so amazingly good in a Riesling. The complexity was just amazing, very good concentration and intensity, very long and - of course, like almost all J.J. Prüm - just marvelous in its balance. J.J. Prüm's wines offer an elegant, less-bodied Riesling style with reductive tendencies - a style which not all people may like - but one, which I absolutely love. This is how Mosel Spätlese should taste like and it will be amazing to watch the development of this wine over the next years.

The Sulphur has dropped away and you’re left with pristine orchard fruits and flint. It has good volume and acidity that is softening but supportive. Excellent balance.

Just a fabulous nose of green apples, passionfruit and petrol minerals. Mildly sweet with wonderful succulence and mouth-watering acidity. Delicious flavors of ripe green apples, lime and grassy minerals lead to a complex and tangy finish with notes of smoky petrol and passionfruit. I can't explain how good this bottle is tonight. Still young and becoming more nuanced. Amazing with pork chops from the Piggery.
A light straw yellow in appearance , the nose is initially heavy with the characteristic Prum sulphurous, struck match, rubbery quality, underlain with aromas of passion fruit, and coconut, hints of floraility, and a strong herbal presence. Aeration dissipates the sulphur, leaving a smoky slaty minerality, the freshness of delightful white flowers, honey, tangy green apples, oranges, lime juice, and subtle herbiness. Deliciously refreshingly off dry, with a hint of spritz, acidity and sweetness balance each other beautifully. The palate is rich with juicy Granny Smith apple, and a sweet, nutty, quality redolent of baked apple pie. So much to enjoy here - elegant and complex , zingy and rich. Wish i had another bottle to try in 5 years time! Will continue to develop for a decade!

A very pale lemon colour, full of co2 to start. Typical flinty/smokey nose full of ripe peach and a little honey, but only a little - not feeling overly aged yet...In the mouth, very high acid and more mineral and flinty than I would have thought. This has tangy lemon peel mixed in with the richer notes of white peach, with some bottle age it has a hint of almonds. Not too rich, this is one you could easily drink the whole bottle of... yum

Pale colored with a nose of white peaches, mandarin oranges, petrol and lime.
OMFG...the flavors follow the nose, but there's an ethereal quality that is just heavenly. Lightweight and elegant with plenty of lift. Not overripe -- this is a Spat that actually tastes like a Spat, no pradikat creep here. 8% abv, completely refreshing. Beautiful winemaking.
Salil gets this one right (finally).

Still fresh and bright, but entering into early maturity. Slate driven with cooler Mosel fruit, a floral lift, and early hints of petrol. Kaffir lime, green apple fruit with a perfect balance of RS, soil and acidity. Nothing is really prominent here, it comes across as a cohesive, beautiful, complex yet effortless wine that is incredibly easy to drink. Starting to drink beautifully and will likely stay there for a long time. 93pts

Youthful, expressive nose with medium(+) intensity. Green pear, elderflower, passionfruit, fresh lime, rubber hose, wet stones and white flowers. Maybe not the most complex nose but it sure smells heavenly.
Semi-sweet on the palate with high, ripping, acidity and medium(-) body. Meidum(+) intensity of flavors that are so pure and focused. Lovely light and juicy that leaves your palate begging for another sip.
Still youthful and will keep for a long time but damn good today! Love the style of J.J. Prüm's wines!

Drank post-dinner at Ledbury. Pale lemon. Apples, peaches and lemons. Stony mineral (slate), and a faint whiff of white smoke. Lively acidity, medium- body; elegant and a little light in the mouth. Despite being a dozen years old, this wine gave me the impression that it was still very youthful and could use a couple more years to come together. Will be better if you can wait.

Apples, pears, lime, and florals on the nose. Lime and minerals on the palate, with an exotic floral element. Restrained, though very complex and interesting if one is willing to look. The sweetness is there, but very well integrated. The acid is huge. This was not the best bottle I've had, and yet it is still singing.

Wild flowers, citrus fruit and stoney minerality drive the nose and palate. Bright acidity is channeled into the middle and balanced perfectly against the weight of the body and maintaining a lightness/ elegance on the palate and (long) finish. Initially, some reductive notes were present on the nose and entry but these subsided with air to reveal a more striking stoney, introduction.
Excellent - Drink or Hold

Very little to add to my previous notes on this. This wine is absolutely stunning, and drinking superbly right now. Amazing intensity of flavour, with an array of orchard fruits, floral notes, sulfury funk, and a vivid slate/stone mineral character that cling to the palate, and a remarkable sense of lightness that's hard to put into words. So focused, elegant, and long. Spectacular.

Look, this shit was on fire tonight. Crisp and clear nose of that cumin sponti (Z says burnt), lime, and sizzling minerality. The palate is even better - just dead on: lime, minerals, lemon, maybe a touch of grapefruit. It's really the texture that gets you - the acid/sugar balance is pinpoint - so light, like a cloud, but full of flavor. I could drink cases of this. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5.5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 17/20

Another fantastic bottle of this. Incredibly bright, pure citrus, pear, and green apple fruit framed by floral notes, slate, and some of that sponti yeast funk I often get from young Prüm. There's still a bit of sulfur here that only clears after substantial air, and it feels far more youthful than its 11 years. Impeccable balance with the acidity and sweetness buffering each other perfectly, and good length.

truly amazed at this wine for the value and taste. Opened to a great green apple palate with good acidity with a prolonged after taste. Sweeter than the whites I'm used to but a great introduction to reisling. The minerality coupled with the acidity makes this a great wine to enjoy.

AP #04-06 (late release) again, and another stunner of a Spätlese. A bit tight and unyielding at first, but slowly unravels with air to reveal layers of incredibly fresh citrus and green apple fruit tinged with smoke, flowers, slate, and a faint whiff of sulfur that lingers for a while. Z's descriptor of crystal pure nails it - there's such incredible purity and transparency to the flavours here, with gentle sweetness and an incredible sense of lightness. Incredible wine, and I'm glad I went long on this.

Late release. Improved dramatically with about two hours of air. On open, it was great, but not exceptional, which it achieved in a few hours. Lime, green apple, chalk, minerality. Crazy minerality and excellent acidity. Long finish. Drink some now AND hold others. You have several, right?

Dekantert 3 timer.

Incredible wine, absolutely crystal pure and scintillating in its balance between fresh apple fruit, lime, pulverized slate, and dazzling acidity. Red apples, green apples, pears, and lime on the nose and palate. This took a while to open up, but it was worth the wait. AP #04-06, a late release from the Prüm cellars. This is absolutely stunning right now, a very classic Spätlese that's all about elegance and finesse. There's a core of fresh red apples, pears, and ripe citrus fruits framed by gentle floral and mineral notes, and the start of developing creamy elements, but what makes this so remarkable now is the sense of lightness - almost weightlessness - on the palate. The sweetness here is quite understated, less than most modern Kabinett, and it's matched by bright acidity that keeps this incredibly precise and focused. Each sip seems to linger for minutes, and I'm glad I went long on this. Fantastic wine that's drinking surprisingly well now, but I imagine has plenty of time ahead to develop as well.

Light gold. A little spritz on opening. An attractive nose of lemon rind, peach, lime juice, pear, yellow spices and meadow flowers. Just a whiff of petroleum. Citrus flavours on palate, with green apple, pears, minerals and chalk. The sugar is at a nice level, mingling well with the spices, minerality and the acids. Quite detailed and quaffable. A lovely tactile, viscous mouthfeel. Elegant, pure and well balanced. Only 8% alcohol. Good fruit weight and length. It seemed to be only a few years from its drinking plateau, I'm not sure this wine will make really old bones.

Mostly Prum with Duck (Peking Duck House): Classic apple/peach and meadow character, but it's tannic and phenolic which makes it slightly bitter. Good but this bottle was not at the level this wine can hit in other vintages.

Drank @ Le Bernadin to start the meal. This is a great, easy-drinking wine. Very light, good acidity, sweetness was there but not overpowering. Get some good white peaches and light floral. Just a touch of the petrol standard in a Riesling. It was a nice wine.
Obviously more evolved compared to the 2011, some notes of petrol on the nose, more slatey minerality with marked acidity – from a cooler vintage. Good length. Quite dry for a Spätlese. Drink or hold. 90-91+

(A little moisture penetration of the cap edge. Good foil, and fill level good.)
Light yellow, with touches of green plug (5). Clearly Petrolium mark on nose at start. Disappears with some air. Fruit and sweet on the nose (12). Fresh acid and lime / lime peel. Light tingling on the tongue. Lovely balanced sweetness and fruitiness. Mineralitet. Long flavor. Honney. (15) Drank this parallel with the 2011 Riesling Auslese Wehlener Sonneruhr. Much of the same qualities but liked better the balanced between sweet and acidity in the Spätlese. An absolute pleasure. This is in its prime, if I'm going to guess (8).

The massive amounts of sulphur that Prum uses have mercifully been absorbed. That same sulphur has retained the wines youthful freshness with almost no petrol scents or flavors. All peachy-apricot that is initially very sweet until the piercing acidity kicks in on the finish. Lovely Spatlese.

- Yellow color and aromas of butterscotch. It's somewhat balanced and has flavours of apple with a light body. Satin-Like texture with a short finish - Tricky to open as the cork snapped - was it too dry? Did it affect the wine? Probably not, but the wine was in itself somewhat disappointing. Still classic apple juice on palate, but no nose, and little finish. Probably opened it too late.

Golden color. Pretty nose of fresh hay and grasses with a hint of sweetness. Lots of fresh acidity to go with the medium-sweet flavors of molasses, juniper berries and petrol. This is now moving to its secondary flavor development stage with mature caramel and spice notes. I kinda liked it better younger but it's in the in-between phase these wines go through so I will wait on the rest of my bottles to see what's on the other side down the road. A great pairing with the exquisite food at Junoon, NYC.

Pale colour, faint spritz. Musky nose with lemon and lemon pith - perhaps just a touch of sulphur still but that fades quickly. Very clean flavour, great balance. Youthful and chalky - a little tight still - but good lemon fruit here. In this vintage this tastes more like a Kabinett than Spatlese - just off-dry and no Spatlese richness. In fact the 07 Kabinett has more sweetness than this. A long way to go yet. Great refinement but I look for a bit more substance and richness in a Spatlese.

The nose is deep, viscous, green white fruit covered in petrol, very enticing. Color is a light gold, bit of effervescence. On the front, I'm getting pears with splashes of green apples, white apricot, white florals, tangerine zest?, petrol, its very viscous. Nice acidity cuts nicely on leading to the mid palate and the finish is freak'n forever. Loving this wine, well done.

Very light white gold color. A lovely nose of tart green apples, petrol and carbonic minerals. I forgot how utterly delicious these wines are with spicy chinese food. This has mellowed some since I last drank it a few years back but it still has a purity about it and great balance between the mouth-watering acidity and the slightly sweet green apple fruit. Finishes tart and concentrated with hints of juniper berries and petrol. If these aren't the best price-for-quality wines in the world, I just don't know what are. It is aging very well and will become a different but equally profound experience over the next 10 years.

Initial spritz, which is gentle and fun, is gone after 10 minutes. Ripe pear to minor mandarin. Only a hint of classic kerosine. Then primarily this is about perfumed, gentle, yellow grapefruit. Relatively low acid - despite the pedigree this isn't going to be for the long term. Perhaps 6 more years. Perked up and came more into balance with a pudding of v similar and complementary flavours: meringue, cream and tinned (ie no longer very acidic) mandarins! Now having more acidity than the dish, the wine engaged and was more vital - the acidity felt delicate and relatively complex. Reached 90 pts.

Simply a beautiful young Spat, as its youthful mineral profile on the nose grew by leaps and bounds as it sat in the glass. Ripe pineapple and cherry skins were buffered by a sleek acidity, and a long memorable finish. Early in its development yes, but delicious for sure.

Absolutely incredible. Not as gassy as some of its brethren, but the characteristic aromas are there, as is the spritz. Long, unctuous finish that's a bit like a caramelized pear sliding across your tongue. All of the fresh pear and apple notes a guy could ever ask for. Can't wait to try the Auslese.

This is from the same bottle as the last note, from 6 days ago. The bottle was 2/3 full on this day. Today, the petrol seems a bit less prominent, but only a bit. While the wine seems a bit less vibrant today, the fruit is much more prominent, with even some light red fruit notes - cherries. It's a better wine than it was 6 days ago - a bit more balanced, a bit more restrained, and a fair amount more interesting.

Another one of those "petrol" shakes! This slightly fizzy wine has a nice nose of white flowers and petrol, a mouth that's moderately sweet with white apricots and flowers and more petrol, and a length that's best described as (get this) oily. The length is also long and while not particularly smooth, owing to those petrol notes, it is quite rich and very, very interesting, if only borderline captivating!

Wow....I love these wines. In the glass scents of freshly sliced white peach and apricots, baked granny smith apples and a flinty, mineral-esque scent that rides shotgun to all the fresh fruit. The nose on this wine is tremendous...and I could get lost in this glass on a nightly basis. In the mouth flavors of apricot, fig, lime, orange rind, and wet stone crash across the palate...on a 45+ second finish that is breath taking. This is an outstanding bottle of wine...

Terrific nose. Definite burnt tire and petrol scent mixed with the sweet smell of dried apricots and dried apples. My wife thinks I'm nuts about the burnt tire thing being there, but it's there and I like it. Full bodied, oily mouthfeel. Same flavors as described above along with flinty minerals. Lip smacking residual sugar and a great finish. Delicious stuff, but I will say I've had similar experiences with $12-$18 Mosels. Took this bottle to our favorite mexican restaurant and it was a great pairing with the spicy mole.

Crisp and classic German riesling with mouthwatering acidity and juicyness combined with just the right touch of sweetness. Delicious flavor profile of tart green apples and sweet peaches against a backdrop of flinty minerals. Paired beautifully with chicken livers and bacon skewers and pea and mint soup.

Nice nose of sweet hay and tangy green apples. Great combination of mildly sweet green apple fruit combined with powerful, mouthwatering acidity. Has palate-staining intensity with good crispness and a long finish filled with notes of tangy green apples, sweet oranges, cumquats and limestone minerals. Still quite young and made in a high-acid style which usually means a long and graceful life for this wine. Both the '94 and '96 were made in this style and they are drinking beautifully today. 92+

At least an 89 pointer, this '04 version at this infant stage is zingier and racier than the '05. No gas or sulfites either. Very, very nice and paired well with the spicy red snapper curry at Seasons 52.

Young yet and loaded with mouthwatering acidity and flavors of green apples and cumquats. Just slightly sweet and extremely juicy with a lingering intensity on the lively finish. An excellent version of this classic wine that should age beautifully.

Decanted for about half an hour to allow some of the sulphur notes to blow off. A bit more color than the kabinett, with notes of minerals, wet stone, sulphur and petrol. A more rich and full texture than the kab, with pear and tropical fruit flavors.

in a word, delicious. apple juice, cantelope, some lime. as i smelled this, i could envision an entire melange of descriptors coming forth, each a bit different based on your own perspective. it's a very expressive nose! the acidity is ever so much on the tart side, but i presume this settles with some bottle age. i also enjoy the fact that it's not too sweet. the finish is tongue-coating with a beautiful mouthfeel, and long. you can never have enough prum in your cellar. highly recommended.

(IG)

Blassgelbe bis blassgoldene Farbe;
Ganz leicht cremige Textur, lebendige Säure, sehr sehr ausgewogen,
Hat sicherlich noch sehr gutes Alterungspotenzial und eine schon jetzt extrem gute Mosel-Spätlese

Wild flowers, citrus fruit and stoney minerality drive the nose and palate. Bright acidity is channeled into the middle and balanced perfectly against the weight of the body and maintaining a lightness/ elegance on the palate and (long) finish. Initially, some reductive notes were present on the nose and entry but these subsided with air to reveal a more striking stoney, introduction.

truly amazed at this wine for the value and taste.

Nose just starting to give hints of petroleum but also minerality and spices (cinnamon and nutmeg?) and fruits (Apple pear). But still a reticent wine that will open up in future up years

The wine is still a baby and has decade(s) ahead

While the wine seems a bit less vibrant today, the fruit is much more prominent, with even some light red fruit notes - cherries. It's a better wine than it was 6 days ago - a bit more balanced, a bit more restrained, and a fair amount more interesting.
