8th of 12, decanted an hour, perfect cork and level, less substance but more refinement than 03 and 2000 on same night, beautiful balance and freshness of 01 and today showing greater complexity, well made as ever, limited upside, 12+ years. F+ (18)......others preferred the richer and sweeter palates of the 00 and 03 and, although I preferred 01 on the night, I suspect the other vintages are the better bet for the long haul, particularly the 2000.

Our last half bottle of a full case and a good decade of 90-91s come to an end. Definitely one to decant a little beyond that all set, classic well aged and albeit a touch austere and with that Pauillac firmness still a good wine.

Nice wine - classical Bdx with tertiary notes. Barnyard on the nose, disappears after a 4 hour decant. Then a classical nose and also fresh, fine notes on the palate, which is a little bit "thin" to get a better note. Medium finish. No chance against the Pape Clement 1990 which was its "partner" this evening, but nice wine in its sweet spot.

Very nice mature Bordeaux. Still full of fruit. Blackberry. Hedge row, nice old saddle leather. Good structure now softening and integrating well. Medium to long, medium complexity. Drink now and over the next 10 years.

From half bottle. Cant argue much here ( we have been commenting on this wine for the last few yeas and this has been scoring 90-91 very consistently from half bottle. Classic across the board, charming, good earthy feel , well managed and healthy fruit. Yes has a few sharp edges but really a very pretty one. 91

From half bottle once again and decanted for a good 30 mins. Very pretty classic claret and 2001 continues to deliver on the fruit and freshness. This will go for a long time too. 91 for now and very well behaved

Half bottle. Needs a good 30 mins off decanting. Very classic with good dark fruit and frankly still very much on the fruit and not in a secondary mode 20 years later. We have had questionable bottles (all half bottles Papies 91-92) but all in all very good 91 ish wine.

From half bottle, decanted for a good hour. Maybe the half bottle didn’t help but felt a bit less impressive than from a few years ago ( Papies 92). Dark fruited , a touch overdone at times. Good wine but with a question mark. 90-91

Absolutely delicious! I would agree that this is drinking beautifully and the nose got better and better throughout the evening. GPL rarely disappoints no matter the vintage. Hopefully the price of GPL will hold as it’s been sneeking up over the last few years. Super wine.

Very pleasant 2001 Bordeaux. Although I would gauge it has a few more years 'left' I would recommend drinking now as i dont think it will get any better. Classic claret!

This is my 3rd bottle of the case that I cracked open a few years ago. This bottle turns out noticeably better than the previous two. Polished and aromatic, with rich flavours of cassis, graphite and cedarwood. It's fruiter on the nose than on the palate. Tannins are very fine. Although it lacks the flamboyance and concentration of a GPL in a good vintage, this is nevertheless a beautifully balanced 2001 wine.

This was in a perfect window for those that enjoy aged Bordeaux with a bit of fruit hanging on. On the nose red frying, but somewhat faint with some pleasant green notes (bay leaf?). Velvety mouthfeel with a hint of chocolate and eucalyptus balancing the fruit before finishing with good acidity and medium tannins. Worth seeking out for near term drinking.

On the palate, it's full of cassis, cedar, tomato leaf, pencil lead and dark fruits. It is obviously lighter and not as rich as 2000. Perfect balance of primary and tertiary notes. Tannins are largely resolved. It's a fairly well made classic Pauillac for an off-vintage.

Classic mature Bordeaux nose. Ready immediately upon uncorking, but advise decanting for sediment removal. Great choice for a patio dinner of cold steak and tomato salad.

13% alcohol. The cork is not that long, but it is dense and virtually un-penetrated. Decanted 75 mn ahead. Dark colour with some fading and the onset of browning at the edge of the rim. The nose has good intensity with blackcurrant and the harmonious remnants of oak élevage. The mouth is stricter because of highish acidity, whereas the tannins are largely resolved; in that sense, this wine is balanced much more like a Burgundy than a Médoc, let alone a Pauillac (and no, I did not say that it tasted like Burgundy). Pretty good on its own terms nevertheless, with good fruit and a balance tilted to the bright side. I like it, but I will add that the Lynch-Moussas 2004 that I had recently was much more Pauillac-like, in spite of the ostensibly inferior vintage and pedigree. I am getting too old to buy these stern Médocs, so the repurchase status does not arise. Went well with new lamb cutlets.

Am beginning to see the beauty of “off” vintages of Bordeaux. Okay, maybe not off per se - less heralded, more like. On the nose, dark cherries, some cedar and graphite and very faint whiffs of tobacco. This was so elegant, so balanced - left me wondering why I was such a points whore (and bought mainly sexy vintages) in my early Bordeaux collecting days. I seem to enjoy good but unheralded vintages a lot more - 01 and 04 spring to mind. Of course, nowadays I hardly ever buy Bordeaux any more, but that is a tale for another time. Drank over 3 days.

Popped and poured, and drank over 90 minutes. Ready to go right away. Fully mature Bordeaux, but plenty of stuffing left to last at least another 5-10 years. Red fruits, especially cherry on the back end. Fragrant nose.

Had a case in bond shipped over. Everything in seemingly good condition, popped one and cork came out perfectly. But the wine tasted a bit off. Not undrinkable, but clearly not right. Opened one more from the case and it was the same. Had traded a couple of bottles, 1 person agreed it was an off bottle, one thought it was great. Contacted the merchant and they took back the remaining bottles for full refund :)

My experiences with 2001 Bordeaux continue to be quite enjoyable. Nothing too exuberant but a very balanced wine with cassis and blackberry fruits, acidity to bring freshness and a menthol note in the finish. It's drinking well but should remain in its plateau for a number of years.

5th of 12, opened 2 hours, perfect cork and level, flavour profile as described in my previous notes, mainly cassis led, although not particularly concentrated, very harmonious and with fine acidic lift giving life to the fruit, scope to improve further. Another fine plus showing (18).

Fully mature, this is ready to drink, and probably will not have the longevity that is usually common to the estate. I will look to consume my remaining stock over the next few years. The nose is is deep and lingering. Blackcurrant and leather dominate with decent depth and a reasonably decent finish. I personally find the finish over tannic with a residual bitterness, which distracts from the overall experience.

90min decant. Nose: huuuuge fruit, leather, maybe a touch of barnyard/brett. Palate: sooo much elegant fruit (black cherry, black currant), anise, tobacco, cedar? Crisp acid, just beautifully balanced. Really, really nice — better than the 2011 from a couple weeks ago by a considerable margin. Loving this wine.

Decanted for 1 hour. Lovely nose with blackberry and leather, delicate but not overly complex. Very enjoyable on the palate, elegant rather than powerful. Fresh acidity, nicely balanced. Tannins well developed. Good length (balanced). This is not the most bombastic expression of Pauillac or GPL but a very precise and elegant one. I really enjoyed it.

This has hit full maturity and should stay here for the next 5 years plus. The vintage really belonged to the right bank, but this is perfectly pleasant with mature aromas of blackcurrant and leather. The tannin has sweetened and the palate has good balance and reasonable depth, but I do find it a little one dimensional, and not over complex. Likewise the finish is reasonable, but on the short side and light.

13% alcohol. Good long dense cork with minimal wine penetration. Fairly dark colour with the onset of bricking and some thinning at the edge of the rim. Decanted an hour ahead. Very good nose, with more red than dark berries and some tobacco (fleetingly). The oak is fully integrated. The mouth is just as good, with uplifting acidity in the finish; no opulence here, but harmony aplenty. The tannins are fully resolved, but the wine has good grip nevertheless. No rush to drink. Not the most demonstrative of Pauillacs, but a very good one nevertheless. A success in the lean and understated mode.

Delicious. Rarely drink Bordeaux under 20-25 years age but this proves I should. Needed hour to open (but not decanted) but once there this was an elegant middle weight with blackberry fruits, freshness with spine of acidity, and a bit of complexity on finish. Altogether very drinkable and inviting without being obvious.

Really nice bottle. Soft, resolved, medium bodied. Shows more on the palate than on the nose. Smooth as a David Gilmour double bend. You know, the kind where he bends the minor third up to the major fourth and then the major fifth over a descending minor key chord progression? And you're thinking oh David Gilmour that's such a tasty lick how did you get so very tasty? That's this wine on this night.

Unfortunately this could not shake off a very faint touch of cork. Otherwise I would have been scoring this a 93 as last time. The nose is bursting with ripe fruit and the palate is perfectly balanced with good depth. Completed with a lengthy finish, the wine is a great example of mature Bordeaux, and a bonus in a vintage that very much belongs to the right bank

One-hour (or so) decant. Wine was clear, garnet, no amber on rim. Very different from the bottle I reviewed in April 2017. This bottle hit all the check marks! In the nose: red fruits, cigar box and some Epsom salts. On the palate: red currants, slate, cedar. Fruit was just a bit dusty. Medium length. Much better than my last couple of bottles. Great food wine. I wonder if there is some bottle variation given my experiences and reading some other CT notes. This was a wonderful classic Pauillac.

As expected this is a lovely claret, mellow GPL - slightly drying out though, that core of fruit sweetness is more fragile than typical GPL, this is compensated somewhat by the relaxed, softer, richer structure.
This is now a drink-now vintage for GPL. Perhaps many left-bank Bordeaux. The maligned 2002 will outlive the 2001 by some way I expect.

Wow! Splendid nose of very fragrant black fruits along with dried herbs and a hint of minerals! Very dark in colour! Sheer red fruits on the palate, rich and intense, although it is a touch tight and needs time to unveil! A little gem!

Points for elegance. I am not sure decanting helps - letting it unfold softly in a glass or the bottle keeps some freshness for a 2001. Very pure but lacks stuffing of better years. Nice wine.

This is now fully mature and is drinking beautifully. The tannin has completely sweetened in the last year, (something I hadn't anticipated would ever happen,) and it is full of deep blackcurrent and leather. There is great depth to the wine and a good balance between fruit and tannin. All completed with a long finish, this wine has finally turned a corner.

While GPL is one of my favorite Pauillacs, this vintage seems to have gone a little numb since I last had it a couple of years ago. This is the second bottle I have had of late that seemed that way, even after a decant and an hour or so in the decanter. Color is nice, nose is red fruit and pleasantries, and in the mouth it has a good feel, but it seems to "just not feel right" in comparison to my earlier bottles (or in comparison to the 2003s I have recently drunk). The wine certainly was enjoyable, but it seems down a couple of points from last year. Certainly will last for awhile. I am hopeful the other bottles I have will rebound.

{cork, 13%} Down the middle Paulliac. Pencil shavings and cigar boxes. Dusty currants. Medium weight, still with plenty of fine powdery tannins. Medium acid. Certainly evolved, but far from old. Nicely ripe fruit, lifts with food, medium length finish. Very good, OK to start drinking now without hesitation.

Second Judgment of Madrid, Still an Aficionados' Matter (Restaurante Garcia de la Navarra - Madrid): Perfectly open and enjoyable right now. Vintage helps without any doubt. On the nose is a mixture of masculine aromas of fresh meat and roses, violets and sandalwood. Perfectly combined. With harmony. In the mouth it is more delicate and soft. It lacks a bit of elegance but aspires to greatness. Certainly deserves the fourth position.
Perfectamente abierto y disfrutable ahora mismo.

We decanted the wine for ninety minutes before we poured the first glass and followed its development over a period of another two and a half hours. The wine was dark ruby in colour and offered dark fruit, chocolate, cedar, leather and tobacco on the nose. On the palate the wine showed dark cherry, blueberry, blackberry, black currant, chocolate, tobacco, spices, vanilla and graphite, with medium-plus acidity and tannin and very good length. The medium-bodied wine tasted a little sour (in a pleasant way; like raw beef) and was a little drying. A nicely evolved, balanced, reasonably smooth Pauillac with good complexity, if without the concentration of better vintages. I am not too sure that it will make old bones, but I can sense liking it even better in five years.

Better than my first bottle -- I'd say the theme of my last note is correct but this was a richer experience. The aroma was more focused and the taste (after a decant) was a wee bit more profound. Nice stuff. I kept thinking of the 2000 Dame de Montrose -- this was in a very similar realm.

The rating is irrelevant -- this is a mid-level Pauillac doing its job beautifully. Which means I am grading this while drunk. 15 years after vintage, the fruit has dropped down and the secondary characteristics are kicking in. The finish is lengthening, the mid-palate is deepening, that cedar thing is starting to take a place among the fading tannins. It's really good stuff. It's not Pontet Canet or a first growth, but if you want a friendly left bank that reminds you of why you like the way Bordeaux starts to age, here it is. Flannery filets wrapped with bacon, sauteed mushrooms, spinach, view of the city, really a nice evening.

It's a nice Bordeaux but not a great Pauillac. Good Bordeaux nose, good palate. But I paid € 40,- which isn't expensive for these kind of wines. But for € 40,- I can buy a much better wine from the Rhone or the better ones from South Africa which is much more value for money.

By the glass at the BA lounge. Fresh bottle albeit opened for a bit of time. Decanting would for sure help this wine. Dark and youthful in colour. Very much a classic pauillac from nose to palate. It's young but not austere or harsh and the tannins albeit grippy are not angular. Primary still with a good pepper , light leather light cedar notes. Good fruit across and given time ( a good 5yrs) this will definitely evolve into a real elegant beauty. 92 for now but will improve with time.

Thank god for other people's reviews or I'd be ready to cry. Our bottle last night (first of six bought long ago, taken to someone else's house) was initially identical to Paul D's, though after two hours and close to the last drop there was some sign of change, something that could have led to the wine Zweder describes. I'll cross my fingers and open another soon under better circumstances.

Terroir-istes International - France, Bordeaux, Pauillac (Rodwell House): Mid garnet to orange rim, the bouquet is tar, cedarwood, black fruits, earth, liquorice and warm brown spices. It is lifted and heady with great intensity. With a lively acidity on entry and sandy texture, the wine shows ripe fruits and spicy oak notes, displaying a savoury edge suggesting some age. Complex, it is medium-bodied but lacks some stuffing yet remains elegant. Flavours of liquorice, chocolate, shoe polish and forest floor. A long finish, svelte with cocoa-powder tannins and a touch of feral on the end. I felt the touch of brett seemed integrated into the wine, perhaps overall the wine was a little monochrome?

Opens up with a lot of cedar and cigar box aromas, pretty classic Pauillac. Not much fruit there for the first hour or so. With air this improves, with dark fruit appearing, in the fresh blackberry mode. Good structure with the balance on the tart, acidic side. Some powdery tannin but not drying. Also some oak tannin noted on the finish. Great with dry rubbed grilled rib eyes. Last glass was the best. Could hold this longer, or drink now, depending how you like them. Wouldn't hold too long based on this bottle. Enjoyable Bordeaux that didn't break the bank.
Showing a bit of age around the rim, lovely garnet. Classic nose, cassis, forest floor, spices, mineral, very impressive. Quite smooth, good grip and acidity, maybe a touch sharp. Not much fruit on the palate and not extremely well balanced, hardly noticeable, silky tannins, good length. Very good, drink now.

Last bottle of this case, sadly. Classic Pauillac in middle age. Fine, grainy tannins, iodine; some tart, plummy fruit discernible an hour or so after decanting. Still rather tightly wound and will not suffer from additional time in the bottle, or an hour or two in the decanter.

Très intéressant. Un vin à l'insistance discrète. Très distingué, il donne l'impression de ne pas y toucher, mais la persistance aromatique est marquante. Se livre finalement comme un grand vin, facile et raffiné, avec du fond. Une belle bouteille.

opened 4 hour ahead. nice nose of slightly mature bordeaux with cedar and tobacco. palate slightly less impressive, just medium bodied and the fruit is quite underwhelming and soft. if the palate ends up living up to the nose this could turn out better than this. Unmistakable paulliac nose of leather, tobacco, and oak; earthy palate of red berries, licorice, fine tannins, light weight but not thin; perfectly balanced with a clean finish devoid of any hint of alcohol. Many previous tasters must be more spoiled than I, because I thought this was wonderful. A lighter weight body for a 'full flavored' wine, it is so well balanced, refreshing, and versatile. Seafood in the summer? No problem. A great cooler vintage bordeaux for a fair price.

Really suffered in its flighting, coming between a pair of outstanding older Bordeaux and the Cheval and Haut-Brion. It comes across a little ripe and dense right now with the oak still rather unintegrated and not showing any of the pencil lead/cedary elements I'd expect in Pauillac; with time it pulls itself together better with the fruit taking a step back and more savoury elements starting to emerge. Plenty of structure here, and this is more about potential than pleasure right now.

This one was hard to get a grasp on. Initially quite expressive with floral nose of red fruits along with coffee, and flint but with air turned quite dumb with a shy nose of licorice and cassis. Palate was rather subtle and feminine, with cassis, licorice, cedar with some mature characteristics. Lengthy focused slightly dry finish and touch of leather. In liked it better upon opening but I still think this will turn the corner with time--though it's a rather subtle and elegantly style bdx. 91-92

From 750. Mature disc. On opening, quite a bit of fruit with an almost candied quality, lots of spice here with a sort of bell pepper component. Curiously anonymous. There's good density and technically nothing is wrong really, but I don't know that I would have pegged this as a Bordeaux blind (never mind a Pauillac) - my first guess would have been Californian. Again, the palate has no flaws. It's just rather generic, which unfortunately didn't change with air. I don't think this will really come around, either; it's mature now and certainly not going to get any better.

La Commanderie de Bordeaux à Vancouver - Chateau Grand-Puy-Lacoste Vertical (Bistro Pastis): Decanted 45min prior to serving. Medium to red. This was similar to the ‘99 in its ordinary profile but did show some hints of ‘place’ with notes of blackcurrants and cedar, but still lacked the classic nuances that the pre-’96 wines showed. This, along with the ’99 and ’03 all seem to be more ‘internationally’ styled which is sad to see. Good.

Very good, very Pauillac. Decanted a couple of hours: shows more intensity than I recall from previous bottles, where understated harmony was the signature. This is a striking enough wine, free from polish and drama, to make me reconsider abandoning Bordeaux as a source of household wines.

Classic Pauillac on the nose. Not particularly fruity. Supple tannins. Balanced. Opened nicely after an hour. Probably at its peak now & for the next couple of years.

PnP: Dark ruby core color with brick edge. On the nose, vegetal note dominant. On the palate, mild tannins with medium bodied. Over the course of 1.5 hour, the initial vegetal note on the nose slowly evolved into ripe/stewed fruit. On the palate, medium bodied mixture of ripe dark fruit and more vegetal component. Medium finish. Much more balanced than the 2004 but less intensity, as expected due to age. 2004 vintage had a higher tone of acidity, but the flavor was more pronounced.

- Brick color and aromas of cedar and mushroom. It's lacking fruit and has flavours of tobacco, cedar, mushroom and licorice anise with a medium/full body. Round texture with a long finish.

The color suggests a middle-aged wine. This GPL has an engaging, yet restrained bouquet (somewhere between subtle and outgoing) of candied cassis, oregano and black tea with some lifted notes reminiscent of roses and distant hints of animal fur. Nice attack of cool red fruit, some sweetness married with cinder and graphite, with a fairly light-bodied mouthfeel. Not flashy at all, its charm relys on class and nuance. A bit of leafy greenery shows up on the finish along with black tea flavors of tannins (which are sufficiently soft and resolved to make this drinkable now).

From an assemblage of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc, the perfume offers cedar, tobacco. black and red plums and forest floor notes. Medium/full bodied, classic, round, Pauillac textures and a spice filled, red and black finish are the hallmarks of this wine. This is a forward style of Grand Puy Lacoste and while there is no hurry to consume it, there is no reason to wait.

From half bottle. Still very young and primary. Would suggest 1hr+ decanting at this stage. Wine starts very stong and with primary red fruits all over. But it eveolves into a beautiful, elegant wine and although still young a tannic it shows signs of future greatness. Very young at the moment and a shame to try now. Stilll very good though. A good buy for the future. 92 for now but with lots of potential. Drink in 5yr+

For not a great Bordeaux year this is still awfully good. Grapite and pencil lead , warm soft cabernet flavors that i like in Paullacs. Not a big wine, but still with a nice fruit mid-palate.It might last a couple of more years but i would drink any now...very tasty

Popped and poured from 375ml... This smells good right out of the gates, with an intriguing melange of sweet plum sauce, funk, caramel, and forest floor. A fairly sexy nose for GPL and especially for one so young. On the palate, there's good density of fruit and grip, with a very suave mouthfeel-- the tannins seem mostly melted away. Avoids being austere (which GPL can be in some vintages), yet it is totally medium-to-light bodied, of middling length, and elegant. There's an herby, savory, old wood quality here that's sooo Bordeaux. Overall, a nicely classic claret that is charming, traditional, and on a fast evolutionary track. Tastes like it could be high in Merlot for a Pauillac. Still has some upside on the complexity end, but don't hold too long if this bottle is representative.

So I'll get to the wine in a moment, but I'd first like to comment on the goofy dime-sized mock-artistic swirly superimposed letter GPL logo that I had never previously noticed on the lower left side of the label. Is this logo perfectly necessary and befitting a venerable Bordeaux estate? Totally looks like something that Emerson, Lake, and Palmer would have come up with around the time of the Tarkus or Trilogy albums (it is hard to pinpoint the perfect ELP moment in time but it is pre-Brain Salad Surgery, to be sure). Or maybe even something Jon Anderson would have dreampt up circa "Olias of Sunhillow." In any event, I was quite distracted by this logo, which seemed to mock me, to call to me, to lord unflinchingly over me while I meekly drank the wine, like Sauron's Eye to my Frodo. So I ask dear reader that you forgive my lack of true content in this note for I was distracted by an epic mind-battle between me and the logo - in the end, it is hard to say who won.
Oh, the wine was pretty good. Would have scored it a 90 had it not been for that damned logo.

A beautiful Pauillac of the old library bent. Has the beautifully soft, warm scent of old books and old, creaking mahogany furniture over a lush, sweetly warm world of dark fruit. Pretty much at its peak, I think. Gorgeous stuff.

Dinner at Cocotte (Cocotte, Dickson Road): I have always been partial towards GPL, and this was both a good advertisement for the wine and the vintage. We decanted this for about 30 minutes. Very classic Pauillac. Pure cassis, tobacco, earth and whiffs of cigar on the nose. Juicy, crunchy fruit, rich texture, pure cassis and dark cherries and lovely juicy acidty on the palate, all held up by a nice sense of structure from very fine-boned tannins. Pure yumminess. Finish was not the longest, but it was seamless, round and open, showing pure Pauillac loveliness in lingering flavours of plums and a bit of graphite. Just that bit better than the 2002 Giscours we had alongside I think - a bit fresher, more open, more balanced.

Quite enjoyable now as the tannins have smoothened out somewhat. Nice pauillac of pedigree. Very integrated and elegant with a decent finish. Surprising young still. Probably will develop further complexity with another 2-3 years of cellaring, though probably won't be great.

Medium/deep ruby core, narrow pale garnet rim. Moderate intensity but atrractive and quite developed nose showing blackcurrant fruit, notes of tobacco and bloody meat. Hint of gravelly minerals. Palate is medium bodied, surprisngly soft and harmonious with cassis fruit, notes of bloody meat, fresh acidity, medium/good length finish. Very approachable with decent complexity, but perhaps lacking a little depth.

Had from a .375. This is a very nice Bordeaux just approaching its maturity. Given some air it was open and was drinking well. It had typical Pauillac aromas and a good balance, even if it wasn't very powerful. A classic Bordeaux that will probably drink nicely for the next decade.

Complex nose of black currants, tobacco, cedar woods, creamy coconut with a touch of menthol. The wine has developed nicely, maintain the dark ruby in color. Mouthful of dark fruits on the palate, nice texture but a touch simple there and yet still very well made!

This is a really fine Pauillac with tobacco and sweet dark fruits on the nose. On the palate there is a hint of vanilla and dark fruits while the finish is nice and long with flavours of apple and black currant jam. I have one more of these and hope to be patient enough to leave it another 5-6 years.

Without a doubt, a beautiful Pauillac, Black currant, Creme de Cassis....sensational dark fruits, not an enormous wine but very thick, this is indeed something, at least a good 10 to 12 years to go and I don't think it is at it's peak. A beautiful wine!!!!!

Favourite wine of the evening (others were a 1990 Château Olivier, 2002 Abeja Cabernet and 2000 Château Tour Pibran). Dark red colour. The nose shouted terroir (the others had more fruit on the nose). It was classical Bordeaux and really set itself apart from the other wines. Enough fruit with some leather and tobacco and velvety smooth. Very nice wine and can keep for a few more years.

Dark purple color; Very closed out of the bottle and needed some time to wake up. Finally after an hour or so the nose was there with dark fruit and tobacco along with more dark fruit and anise flavors that carried through the medium finish. Structurally sound and probably will continue to improve with additional time. If I owned these I might worry about lack of complexity as it ages but still a good wine.

Dinner Chez Rob & Lauryl: Started out rough for me. Very primary still, and was in a weird place initially. After it had some air for an hour or two, this began to shine though. Classic pencil shavings, tobacco, earth, and some floral notes. Despite being medium bodied, this has very nice flavor intensity, and it ends in a good finish. Although it was delicious with the food last night, this will get much better with time. A definite winner.

Boerne Wine Club (Maggiano's a The Rim, San Antonio TX): Nose was a little closed, but shows some cassis, cherry and crushed rock. Precise refined palate with cassis and sour cherry, but driven by earth and flint. Tannins still prominent and chewy, but not too intrusive. Finish medium to long with plenty of earth, mocha, and pencil. Excellent precise, balanced wine, and a great example of Pauillac. Just staring to enter its drinking window with a good decant.

Excellent Bordeaux nose with primary aromas almost lost. The palate, however, with medium body, long and spicy finish and very green tannins. Would have expected something more mature for the wine of this vintage. Not bad, but for the price, there are better wines out there.

I really enjoyed this due to its subtlety. Medium ruby color. Very open nose of spices, cinnamon and white flowers. The fruit is slightly reserved but that added to its charm tonight. A dark purple wine, with a nose of sweet cassis and tobacco. On the palate it is medium bodied, with sweet fruit, glycerin, soft tannins, and good concentration. The finish is medium-to-long and develops notes of cigar box and earth, while still driven by sweet fruit. This wine drinks well now, but it will develop more complexity within 5-10 years. Drink from now until 2020.

Dark colour with youthful intensity. Cedary nose is full of Cabernet style fruit: black fruits, liquorice, blackberry jam, cigarbox. The finish is long, complex, and very firm with earthiness on the finish. Definitely should continue to improve for years.

A bit primary yet and perhaps a bit closed, it definitely needs time. Relatively unevolved with a lot of cassis and sweet black fruit. Tannic though no monster and quite linear and pure. This should be a very fine wine in 5+ years. Could be a 2004 it's so unevolved.

Medium garnet color. Lead pencil and dried red fruits on the nose. A bit refined on the palate. Not a big wine, but no slouch. Decent mouthfeel with some currant, tar, and leather. There is the usual earthinees present as well. The acid level seems a bit high today telling me it's a food wine. The tannins are undelying. This is my last bottle and I am on the fence either missing more in my cellar or happy they are gone (all 8). I am leaning toward the later.

This is an unusual note for me, since I shun Bordeaux as of late. It surprised me, and I liked it. Alot. This had a deep ruby color. The nose revealed some tremendous dark fuits, cassis, slight almost inperceptible chocolate, and an eartiness I really enjoyed. (It reminded me of a fantastic Napa offering in a great year similar to a Caymus or Shafer.) I almost forgot it was Bordeaux. Super clean resolved tannins that made this wine super-finessful, and yet big. Great lenght on the backside that went on for 20 seconds.

2001 Bordeaux (Virginia): Tasted as part of a 2001 Bordeaux tasting. Lightest wine among the Pauillacs, St. Juliens and St. Estephes today. Fruit leaning more towards the red side, compared to the blacker fruit shown by the majority of the wines we tried. Probably more of a mid than long-term ager. Nice, but slightly outclassed by most of the other 01s here, IMO...

Medium ruby red. This wine shows a reticent nose of creamy cassis, tobacco, and leather. Medium-bodied, but a good roundness and creaminess in the mouth. Not incredibly well structured or showing a long finish, but still this is a nicely balanced wine showing GPL's typical creme de cassis character. 89-90 points

Similar to my previous note. Less of a fruit core than normal for GPL.
Otherwise this is savoury, complex old world claret. If the mood is right it's great stuff.

Dark and youthful in colour. Very much a classic pauillac from nose to palate. It's young but not austere or harsh and the tannins albeit grippy are not angular. Primary still with a good pepper , light leather light cedar notes.

With air this improves, with dark fruit appearing, in the fresh blackberry mode. Good structure with the balance on the tart, acidic side. Some powdery tannin but not drying. Also some oak tannin noted on the finish. Great with dry rubbed grilled rib eyes. Last glass was the best. Could hold this longer, or drink now, depending how you like them.

Dark ruby, with perhaps just the slightest bricking at the rim.classic BDX funk on the nose at first, as well as red fruit, leather, smoke, and blackberries. Medium plus body, smoothe, with red berries on the palate. Finish is nice but fairly short.
I like this wine a lot, and wish I had bought more at $25 back in the day. Not a blockbuster, but a terrific, classic Bordeaux.

Good.
