2005 Château Mouton Rothschild

Community Tasting Notes

Community Tasting Notes (140) Avg Score: 95.4 points

  • Tasted at an Evening with Friends alongside 2005 Chateau Latour and 2005 Chateau Larcis Ducasse. The Mouton Rothschild was, by far, the wine of the evening from first sip to last dram. 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 14% Merlot with 1% Cabernet Franc. A fruit bomb from beginning to end, it surprised with with it's voluptuous full bodied feel. Aftertaste lingered for a full 60+ seconds. It will last for decades, yet gives great pleasure now.

  • Drank on Valentine's day. Not sure what it is, but I have a hard time getting excited about Mouton. Nothing outrageously bad, but also simply not that memorable. It may be young too, for that matter. Tannins came shooting out about thirty minutes into our bottle. Subtle, not overpowering, nice finish -- but nothing outrageously memorable.

  • Sun served this mag btl and decanted for 1 hr which should be longer to let it blossom I believed.

  • A friend surprised us with this bottle from their home. Served at a Healdsburg restaurant. Thank you, gents.

Ullage was reasonable and cork was fine. The bottle was decanted, but served almost immediately. Color had a good medium red hue indicative of an excellent chateau, nearly 20 years old.

The palate possessed darker red fruit qualities, such as mulberry and cherry. Some cassis too. No pencil lead like some Pauillacs. The 2005 vintage, as I recall, was big with lots of tannin, but this specific bottle was all about mid-palate elegance.

In sum, an enjoyable wine, revealing wonderful elegance with medium rich Cabernet Sauvignon flavors. Well balanced, but not brawny.

(Served with grilled duck, mushrooms, and creamed spinach.)

  • Mouton Rothschild Vertical: 2nd time within 2 week to drink with similar notes. Still youthful. It’s actually infanticide to drink now, despite entering into its drinking cycle. Strong vintage and powerful wine. Will last for min 20 years ahead. Medium+ acidity and high tannin. Tannin is velvety. Notes of cassis, vanilla, violet, spices, toast, black fruits, chocolate.

  • Drank it along side 2005 & 2009.

First time trying 2005.

2009 have notes of black fruits, spices, toast, cassis. Opulent. Classic and elegant. Similar notes compared with 2005 just that its younger. Medium+ acidity and high tannin. Tannin is velvety. Again it’s too young to drink this now. Min 20 years ahead. Keep and enjoy later.

  • Wine tasting for friends: Opened for four hours and then decanted for one hour. Served blind alongside Monte Bello 2009.
Solid, elegant Pauillac. The guests noted how evolved it was for the vintage.
Very good wine for sure, but it didn't wow me.

  • Decanted and aerated for an hour then drank over 90 minutes. Deep ruby red, you can almost call the 2005 vintage purely from the color of the wine. On the nose lots of dark cassis notes, tobacco leaf, pepper, some gamyness and crushed stones. On the palate very bright dark red fruits, lots of power and finesses, amazing backbone mid palate and great acidity and structure, finishes long with tannins present but velvety and fully coated by the richness of fruit. Simply delicious.

  • Had this at Table de Pavie in Saint Emilion. The wine was absolutely fabulous and this particular bottle was in a perfect spot - plenty of fruit left but secondary and tertiary aromas coming through. If you have this bottle in your cellar, it might be time to give it a try. Recommend a couple of hours of decant - our bottle was decanted an hour before we arrived at the restaurant and kept cool. By the time we had our first sip, I would guess it had been 2.5 hrs.

  • Return to Willamette; 7/2/2023-7/8/2023 (Portland & Willamette): A bit green but in the best possible way (I actually don’t mind some green in my wine). A bit more herbal. Very tasty although of course a bit young. Drank next to Maggie’s Cabernet.

  • Drinks like a very assured pauillac that is playing it safe and no up for mischief. Amazing potential, but far from offering true personality. A satisfying tease.

  • Dégustation de 30 millésimes de Mouton Rothschild

    2005

    KABOOM !!!

  • Drank extremely well. Profile similar to what you would expect. Drank alongside a 2012 Rudd Oakville Samantha’s, 2015 Verite, and 2005 Abreu, so really stood out as unique. 3 hour decant, could have improved with more. Excellent wine.

  • Judgement of Paris Tasting and Dinner (V. Mertz - Omaha, NE): Served blind alongside what was eventually revealed to be the 1971 Mouton Rothschild. This almost had me leaning Napa by a classic producer due to the gorgeous fruit and generous, scratch that, lavish use of new French oak. After careful deliberation with those at the table with more experience drinking Mouton both young and old, I was able to come alongside the others that this was indeed young Pauillac. All the cassis, cigar box, tobacco and baking spices ones heart could desire with some of the loveliest acid. Speaking of, the structure still has quite a grasp of this one but with all the lovely fruit, everything is in brilliant balance, even at 18 years young. Given that, I expect this wine to drink well for decades to come, particularly since secondary characteristics have hardly entered the chat. Definitely a wine I hope to enjoy many more times over the years but so grateful I got to try now.

  • 4/14/23- Strip Steak LV.
Slow oxed for ~3 hrs. prior in the room.
    Decanted at the restaurant. ~1hr
Nose: Hauntingly deep old cab aromas with some porcini dust hidden in there and overall delicate but beautifully unmistakably Mouton RC!
Finely macerated ripe cherries & plumbs on the palate but still has some power to it! Tannins are fairly well integrated. Acid is slightly protruding but still balanced. The finish fades gently. Approachable now but still had some hints of austerity. Nothing, some more cold cellar time will not resolve!
    Next bottle in 2 year.

  • From 6l. Decanted only 2 hours in advance and then drank compentatively between 6-8 of us over the next 3-4 hours at Otto Y Mezzo in Hong Kong. All my expectations were that this would be infanticide, especially in this format but, boy, was I wrong! WOW..WOW....this was totally beguiling, rounded and captivating from the first whiff of the nose and the first impact on the palate....and then it just grew from there into what were progressively mounting levels of 'reveries' territory. One of the gang is a tier-1 wine trade guy and is normally fairly low key in his scoring, but he thought my 96+ pts should more be knocking on the door of 100. My only defence the sublimity of the 1959 Mouton and Latour I have drank. But I can only go back is to how stupendously beautiful this is and...at any moment...how many angels can dance on your tongue? 96...and beyond!

  • Intense, especially following 2005 Hundred Acre. Earthy nose and layers of complex dark fruit. A real treat that will be better with additional age.

  • Classics (Tøyen, Oslo): Double decanted 2-3 hours prior to dinner

The nose jumps out of the glass with immensely deep purple fruits. Blackcurrant, cherry, pencil shavings, juniper, asphalt and a pronounced minerality, truly a showstopper nose. Later on leather emerged alongside sous bois.

Supremely smooth mouth feel, close to full bodied with perfect harmony. Dusty tannins, a slight cola note, crushed rocks and an enormously long finish driven by perfectly ripe cherries.
The mouthfeel is just so luxurious.

This kept on giving throughout the night, no hurry, though finally it seems 2005 has come around, drinking beautifully now.

  • PnP. Blood red color to orange at the edge. Nose is black fruit, cedar, incense, note of bay leaf, NY subway urine (evolved to used diaper, then settled down at the 40-minute point). Palate is black cherry, currant, pencil lead, baking spice, ground pepper. Nicely balanced and integrated. Still moderately tannic. Miles to go till it sleeps.

  • PnD 5 hrs before dinner yet it still was opening up in glass. A nice wine but, really, I’ve enjoyed some $30 91-93 pointers as much. Wished we’d gone to one of those after 1st glass leaving two glasses for today. Suspect it would be better. The craze Robert Parker unintentionally initiated with 1982 vintage has so distorted fine wine pricing. Good for the top chateaux.

  • We gave this a 3 hour decant in a wide decanter as of course this was opened on the very young side. I did remember that a bottle opened 4-5 years at a Mouton vertical tasting showed really well and this too was suprisingly open and seductive even. It had a great fruit intensity without coming across as hot (which I think some more recent Bordeaux vintages could do with). There seemed to be a touch of exoticism on the fruit, almost reminding me of a top Pichon Lalande in style. A very nice wine today and in 10-20 years it should prove a classic legend of a Mouton.

  • Paul opened in magnum and served in his BD dinner. As usual, this is one of the best vintage for Mouton. Full, silky and memorable.

  • Decanted 4+ hours. A very good wine but I expected more. I know that it's still early for the 2005', I'm not sure if it was a bit closed or if the bottle was not representative. Nevertheless a very good wine. I hope the next one will be even better. 94+ pts. at the moment.

  • I wish I could show you the colour of this - beautiful deep garnet. Mesmerizing. Looks surprisingly advanced for an '05. The smell though is not so great. In fact it really stinks on first opening - like a pig shed and this took a couple of hours to disappear but I don't think the wine ever really recovered. There's a lovely quality of fruit - clean, full, dark and rich - but the wine remains really only medium weight. Plenty of sandy tannins and acidity still despite the advanced colour and it's clear that this wine has been made for the ages.

The source material is clearly top notch but surely this bottle is flawed. ie stinky and the advanced colour. Is this really worth 5 x the price of the excellent Pontet Canet '05? Of course not and a stupid question I know but you've got to ask yourself what you're getting for your money here. Not a re-buy.

Note: I contacted Berry Brothers here in the UK and asked their opinion. They said it definitely sounds faulty and immediately credited the full purchase amount to my account. Now that's customer service.

Roasted aromas that gives a hint it could be Mouton. I guessed LB 2000. Young with a lot of acidity. 96+

  • Luxurious bouquet with pleasant rustic smells, graphite and beautiful vanilla, cedar and oak. Lovely toast. On the palate ripe dark berries, cassis, chocolate, graphite, beautiful acidity, a pleasant touch of sweetness a bit fat. Delicious wine with round, still sticky tannin and already showing its merits, but there is plenty of future in this wine. Just great!

  • Medium dark red color. Beautiful berry, cassis, mineral, and exotic spice bouquet. A rich powerful wine displaying a steel fist within a velvet glove character. Massive, supple fruit, intensely flavored. Long, long aftertaste.
Wow. Enjoyable now, but will continue to evolve for a decade. Truly, an extraordinary experience.
Double decanted for 2 hours prior to tasting.

From Mark’s 2005 Bordeaux Vintage Tasting:
Attended a 36 wine ‘05 Bordeaux tasting recently. The wine above is one of those wines. Served single-blind.
All wines were tasted over a 2 day period, 18 per day. The wines served on the 1st day had their corks pulled two hours prior. The second day’s wines were served “ double-decanted”, 2 hours before the first flight. The overall tasting experience was quite different, as one would expect. Day 2 wines were softer, displaying more ripe fruit, and less harsh tannins.
Kudos to Mark for both a fantastic experience as well as providing an instructive opportunity to evaluate this vintage.

  • 2005 Bordeaux at 16 years courtesy of Mark Taylor; 6/26/2021-6/27/2021 (Atlanta, GA): Mmmmm, funk and horse, wow!!! Spicecake, roasted coffee, an awesome nose! Silk on the palate, cherry and coffee, superfine tannins, just gorgeous. My #1 and the group #1. I guessed Haut-Brion.

  • Phil in Town; 6/25/2021-6/26/2021 (Matts House): Exceptional wine, you know you are drinking a first growth. So polished and rich but had 8 hour decant and was nicely rounded out and showed far better than I thought it would at this age. Classic notes of cedar, graphite, baking spice and nicely integrated oak. This wine in 10-15 years will be screaming, still young no doubt, but was a real treat. I had tied with the 2003 Montrose and behind the 2010 Chave Hermitage which is as good of a wine that has ever been made

  • Cork was removed the night prior; enjoyed over 4 hours. This is all about potential just now. That said, it's a classic Pauillac, with lovely notes of graphite, dust/soil, and a lingering richness of fruit that offers a resounding, and elegant experience. By the second half of the bottle, this had come more into form, but it never really dropped the kimono, so to speak. HOLD for several more years if you're looking for a more complete experience. highly recommended

  • blackberry, currant, cedar smoke, graphite, leather, tobacco, brown spice, black coffee, plum, and dried herbs. Rather ripe on the palate, with air it continues to gain weight and concentration, oak integration is excellent

aromatics unwind faster than the palate unfortunately, on the upward trend 95+

  • Although, the expectation was high for this is probably the best bottle in my cellar (pricewise anyway…), it was a very nice experience to enjoy the 2 of us during this new year’s eve.. locked down.
I noticed 2 things special in the appearance that will translate later in the taste:
Some tiny granularity, sediments that will appear at first in the taste, but will eventually blends together a bit later
Some darker, brownish hints that will turn to some smoky, grilled almonds flavors.

Overall, this is a complexed wine, classy, balanced between power and finesse. With some extraordinary scents of expensive perfumes, sorry could not find the right words for it.

I think the wine is ready to be drunk now. But, can wait easily another 15. Good, I have another bottle 😊

  • I was hesitant to open this as I prefer a bit more age on bdx but after reading more comments it sounded like this was entering a good drinking window. I was shocked at how approachable this was after just 2 hours of decanting. I had a 1996 Mouton earlier this week and the 2005 is much better wine on the palate and finish (not that the 1996 wasn't enjoyable). I look forward to drinking more of these over the next 5+ years as I think it will develop and age for as long as you'd like.

  • This is well done....purple fruited, coffee, some cigar notes, and powerful yet light textured. My brother felt the tannins were a bit heavy, I found them noticeable but think they should integrate well over time. This is still a baby

  • TRULY Outstanding: double decanted and aerated 3 hours

  • The wine started 20 mins after opening with a typical extroverted character. The bouquet was pumped out of the glass. Young aromas still-coffee grounds blackcurrant blueberry cherry. However, it soon simplified and dumbed down and remained that way. The acid was also low to the point of being flabby. It may need some years to emerge but the structure will remain unchanged and too soft for me. Drunk at Tetsuyas.

  • This is so young. Yet, if you look inside with just a bit of effort, the wine is fabulous with unlimited potential. Concentrated, full, rich and with serious depth of flavor, the wine balances its naturally opulent nature with the structure to age, a wall of ripe tannin and endless waves of juicy, ripe, fresh, pure cassis. Patience is warranted. So give it 15 years and enjoy it over the next 50!

  • Académie des Cinquante 64th Annual Dinner (Sofitel The Grand, Amsterdam, NL): Quadruple decanted. Much more concentration and depth than Grand Puy Lacoste on the nose, opulent and rich, meaty, no noticeable oak; relatively light tannic extraction on the palate, not as powerful and concentrated as e.g. the 2006, more transparent in style, slightly sweet and not very complex, gently grippy tannins; long and playful finish.

  • Great ... but closed by tight tannins despite 3 hour decant. Not hard blunt tannins, just tight. Shielding the glorious fruit underneath. Will be spectacular in 10 years for sure but I’ll try my next bottle in 4-5 years.

  • Wine Group Dinner #169 - 2005 Bordeaux Part 2 (Urbane Restaurant, Brisbane): Wine Group Dinner #169, Urbane Restaurant. The first of the Firsts tonight the Mouton was a dense crimson colour with a nose of very ripe blackcurrant, blueberries, dark plums and touches of exotic spice and cedar. The palate has that touch of exoticism and plenty of black fruit with touches of dark chocolate leading into a wall of fine, long tannins on the finish. A very good wine with more to reveal as it evolves.

  • Very dark garnet color, fine nose, balance throughout, elegant and caressing flavor and nuanced finish. A great bordeaux in its prime in impeccable condition, generously poured and thoroughly enjoyed at an April 23 luncheon at the French Institute / Alliance Francaise in NYC, with remarks from Philippe Sereys de Rothschild of Mouton Rothschild, Philippe de Montebello (Director Emeritus of the Metropolitan Museum of Art) and Catherine Pegard of Versailles.

  • Dark as hell. Needing five hours to develop its masculine aromas of blackberries, coffee bean, currants, garrigue or sandalwood. All presented in an elegant way. Multilayered and almost aristocratic.
On the palate is the same story. Chocolatey. Pure velvet. Delicious. Dense, meaty, opulent with a good length.
Only because that acidity low level I've some doubts about its future. A very Mouton bottle. Two more bottles remaining.

  • To me Mouton is like Liverpool football Club. When they play well they are amongst the greatest. When they play poorly, then they make a shambles.
Same with Mouton vintages and the 05 shone like a star.
Deep blackish crimson color, had 4 glasses with Coravin so no proper decanting.
The nose earthy black and dark red fruits, terroir screaming with joy, pencil lead and pepper.
On the palate dense on entry, voluptuous power that takes over the palate and coats it with fruit and great acidity. Long bitter chocolate finish for this poetically beautiful and powerful wine. Outstanding.

  • It's a dinner hosted by Chateau Mouton in which served Mouton 1998, Mouton 2005, Le patit Mouton 2008, Clerc Milon 2009, D'Armailhac 2010 and 2011. To me, the best wine is D'Armailhac 2011 and Mouton 2005.

D'Armailhac gives you nice strong wet leather flavor and on palate with a heavy body but quite smooth. Mid finish. 92

Mouton 2005 also gives you leather flaver with more minerality. Smooth and round. Finish is a little bit longer. 92

Actually, the other three are quite similar to Mouton 2005, but not so smooth and so well balanced. Some are more salty, some have more acidity, etc. I give D'Armailhac 2010 -- 91, Clerc Milon 2009-- 91, Peteit Mouton 2008 -- 91, and Mouton 1998 -- 92.

  • Crimson/mahogany core showing a little ruby fade at the rim; dense and mineral on the nose. Quite tightly wound. Some ripe fruits on coaxing and cedar; impression of coiled power on the palate. Has a long way to go and so much to unfurl! Tannins are resolving themselves but this is still a baby. Wait 15+ years.

  • Had at my friend Mike S. Last night. He decanted for 2 1/2 hours and we slowly drank over the next 4 hours. It kept developing until the third hour. Silky juice with nose that went from milk and dark berries on to earth and soil on to more fruits and then perfumes. The finish was long. Great wine overall. Starting to drink well but will benefit from more cellaring.

  • Trip of a lifetime- literally Bordeaux right/left and North/south Rhone: (Mouton, Cheval Blanc, Haut Brion, La Mission Haut Brion, Vieux Chateau Certan, Angelus, Pichon Baron, Smith Haut Lafitte, E.Guigal, M.Chapoutier, Château De Beaucastel, Stephane Montez, Jean Michael Stephan).

Amazing Mouton tour (museums and facilities state of the art, different than Cheval but beautiful layed out) and tasting:
    First label: 2012, 2009, 2005
    Clerc Milon: 2003
    Chateau D’Armailhac: 2011

Anecdotal comments after the chateau tasting- 2005 & 2009 were some of the best Bordeaux wines I have ever had. Some of the best wines period. Amazing complexity, depth, fruit, mineral- has everything and so much more.

2005 was like a kid in a candy store (so was 2009). I was sad to see it opened but at the same time it was open so when in Rome... Amazing wine and way too young. Not sure what was missing but I do know it had everything I like and some new ones for me as well- something different on the front-end- couldn’t place it but was fun, black fruits and maybe a touch of sour red and a touch of sweetness- all backed by lush velvety tannins and strong mineral underpinning. 13 years old and seems like it barely aged at all. Wait to open if you can as this puppy is built for decades but boy was it delicious.

Could not emphasize enough to do a tour and tasting there if given the opportunity- home run.

  • Joanne Bordeaux Trip 2018 (Bordeaux): The nose was dark and penetrating, showing a sweet, spicy, gorgeous mix of red berries, currant, soaring floral tones, hints of licorice, earth and herbs. On the palate, it was silky, almost creamy, and weighty yet balanced with pure red and blackberry fruits, hints of spice and mounting tannin. The finish was long, long ,long... structured yet fresh and almost savory. This bottle didn’t have the tension that I found at a tasting in 2016, but it was enjoyable nonetheless.

  • Decanted six hours and then back in bottle for two hours. Tannins surprisingly resolved. Some barnyard on the nose, and the fruit is lovely, but restrained. Not epic stuff, at least on this night. May be closed down right now. Rating reflects what it was on this night, not what it might be.

  • As good as this bottle is now, it is so well made that I can't wait to see what it taste like in another 10 years. Just a quick decant and drank over the next hour or so. Balance, finesse, it's all there. Excellent wine.

  • Brief tasting- Wonderful nose with red fruit, perfume, earth and truffle. Very elegant and pretty. Lots of depth. Cant get my hand off from the glass. Potentially 97-98 point in 10 years. Already enjoyable today with sufficient aeration.

  • Medium + ruby with garnet rim. Very expressive with dark fruit damp earth graphite tangerine, tobacco sweet spice. Emits more earthy elements and graphite as it stays in the glass. Deep concentration with loads of fruit, youthful with tannic grip and balancing acidity, earthy with long aftertaste. Young, lots of life ahead. Excellent

  • 2017 New York Wine Experience Trip; 10/16/2017-10/25/2017 (New York City, NY): Last tasted almost exactly two years ago, this ruby/red blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc remains packed with dark plums, violets, iron, orange zest and tobacco on both the nose and palate. Full-bodied, freshly acidic, seamlessly alcoholic and impressively concentrated, this retains its plentiful sweet tannins, solid middle palate and long finish. Based upon the fact that this wine has not budged during the past couple of years, I suspect that it is going to require more cellar time than originally anticipated. Drink 2025-2050.

  • Dense brooding nose - great richness hinted at here and great potential for the future. Closed at present; full and rich but wonderful balance on the palate. Unfurls its excellence gradually. Tight - needs considerable time.

  • This was opened and drank with a small amount of decanting time. The wine was clear and a mid hue of garnet red with a slight brown tinge to it and had a nose of dark berries and some caramel. With tastes of blackberries and some earthiness, this well rounded wine was in a good but not great space. It had mid level tannins but still a strong amount of acidity yet was still quite soft and enjoyable.

  • Wagyu BBQ dinner at my parent's home for my brother's 50th birthday. Color wise on the darker side. Dark ruby, purple core. Discrete nose, opening after 1h decant, of dark fruit predominantly with ripe aromas of blueberry, cake, flowers. On the palate this is deeply pitched again, dense as a Napa but not as sweet. Keeps the balance. A baroque Pauillac without going over board. Very popular at the table. Not me, but some, preferred this over the 2003 Latour and 2000 Margaux.

  • Mouton dinner with Philippe Dhalluin and Bernard Burtschy (Taberna del Alabardero, Washington D.C.): Very youthful yet harmonious and beautifully detailed nose displaying intense crème de cassis, wild Maine blueberry jam, ink, liquid smoke, dark milk chocolate, a hint of floral dust and lead pencil. Excellent concentration, incredibly layered, oily yet silky, weightless and polished, perfect amount of acidity, the tannins are masked by the sophisticated opulent fruit, and a long clean cassis and liquid smoke driven finish. Despite the opulent youthful fruit, the overall impression is quite calm and classic. It is surprisingly enjoyable but will improve for another few decades, hopefully becoming like the 59. Absolute pleasure!

  • If you like power, elegance, concentration, velvety textures, ripe, silky, fresh fruits with spicy, exotic flavors, this is going to be your style of wine. From a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc. The harvest took place from September 21 to October 6. Give this a decade and you’ll be drinking in grand style!

  • Indicative Pauillac and Mouton bouquet of opulent red and purple fruit with dense earth influence and Mouton lead pencil showing already. Obviously a gigantic wine but surprisingly approachable. Rich and sweet black currant and blackberry jam on the palate. Dense minerality as well. Ripe sweetness to the fruit through the finish. Well balanced. Opened at 02:30 and paired with fried eggs and toast, but still got a good read on this.

  • Mouton Vertical (Li Garden, IFC Hong Kong): Powerful yet elegant, can taste a slight sweetness. Too young to drink now, need to wait a few more years.

  • The nose showed an intense core of currant and black raspberry encased in a shroud of tobacco, cedar, spice and graphite. On the palate, it was center-focused with concentrated dark fruits and bitter herbs, as tannin clenched the senses. It finished structured, as tannin saturated the palate, and hints of mineral tinged dried fruits lingered. With everything going on in this glass, it’s almost impossible to imagine this wine at peak. That said, it’s balanced to the core and built like a bomb wanting to explode.

  • The first wine at a 2005-2015 vertical held at 67 Pall Mall on 23rd April. The Mouton Rothschild 2005, like a child born in the same year, is barely an adolescent. This wine is at least 15 years away from its drinking plateau and in quite an awkward place right now, despite the temptation to get carried away by the occasion and pretend otherwise. Neither of which is surprising. It is massive and mouth-filling, encased in a wall of tannins. You focus hard and swirl furiously and get minerality, graphite and an impressive purity of fruit and precision. It finishes with a refreshing salinity. Right now a wine to admire more than enjoy. 94++. I would not be surprised if that score goes up at a rate of about a point a decade.

  • Tour des Deux Rives, San Francisco: This wine had an incredibly complex and beautiful nose. Ethereal fruit, mint, floral notes, and oak. More feminine then I'd expect from Mouton. Likewise, the palate was intense but smooth. It had what I've found to be a common 2005 quality of not tasting mature but yet drinking splendidly anyway. I certainly see it getting better but for a vintage known for need a lot of bottle age, this is sure singing now.

Update: I had some of the leftovers of this wine the next day, after putting argon gas in the bottle with the remaining wine and recorking. This wine was still great the next day, while the 1996 Mouton had lost some of its sparkle, I still marveled over this 2005.

  • Tobacco and spice on nose. Very fine plush tannins. Very persistant with 60 sec mocha finish. Impressive and although a decade away from prime drinking, this is drinking far better than expected. Plenty of acidity but extremely well balanced, and a lovely salinity on the finish makes this seem fresh and moorish. With air noticed some tropical aromas - this has 1% cabernet franc (not used again until 2011. Some preferred the 2006, which has a bit more Paulliac typicity, but I liked this more.

97pts for me. My order of favourite recent top Mouton vintages is 2010, 2009, 2005, 2006

  • Mouton Rothschild Vertical

Matter of Taste Masterclass Verticals of Mouton Rothschild with Philippe Philippe Dallhuin and Neal Martin

Wines tasted 2005-13 from bottle and 2014 & 2015 barrel samples - all wines were decanted for a couple of hours before the tasting and spent considerable time in glass (between 1-3 hours).

2005: Initial impression was this was much more developed then I thought. Compared to other 2005 left banks wines I tried recently (Montrose, Poyferre, Grand Puy Lacoste). Some bricking around the edges (visually certainly the most developed of the whole line-up), displaying great creme de cassis, tobacco leaf and cedar. I could have drank a bottle of this wine now the way it showed without thinking it would be a crime. Certainly it should develop nicely -it’s got this lovely acidity that should ensure this will keep going for decades. Very impressive. 97-99

2006: Tasted after the 05 this came across as fairly closed and had a short finish compared to the previous wine. Visually some bricking around the edges but not as developed looking as 05. I felt it needed a lot of time in bottle and in my book this was nowhere near the 2005 (or some other vintages in this line-up incl 2008 & 2012). Neal Martin liked the graphite and in general RP has in the past rated this wine over the 05. The Group was divided and there was a fair amount of people that had a preference for the 06 vs the 05, some said they found the 06 more approachable. I certainly prefer the Cos d’Estournel 2006 over this which I have had a couple of times. 91-93

2007: One of the disappointing wines of the vertical. It was weird both on the nose and the palate - on the nose I thought I picked up some distracting glue aromas and on the palate nothing really dominated - there was decent acidity but with a lack of fruit to go with it. All the 2007 I had lately were unimpressive. Same here. Avoid. 86-88

2008: One of the positive surprises of the tasting. After the 2006 & 07 like a knight in shining armour to lift the drop in quality from going from 05 to 06 to 07. I found this already really enjoyable now. Beautiful cuban cigar on the nose and a long finish with a beautiful vanilla aftertaste. This is a gentle wine, slightly feminine. Pretty, No doubt 2 step up from the 07. Better then 06! 94-96

2009: Noticeably darker in color then the wine preceding it. Dark crimson / black cherry colour. WOW! This does hit all your taste buds from the first sip. A monument of a wine and you can just say what a privilege to try this (and the 2010). This is destined for perfection. It does make you feel sorry for Philippe and Mouton that Parker rated this 99+ and 99 in his last reviews in 2012 & 2014. I think it would have deserved to be another RP 100er in that vintage. 98-100

2010: After the 2009 came along the 2010. Another WOW! Almost black in colour (yet again darker then the 09). It does humble you to taste these great two vintages together and it dwarfs all (maybe with the slight exception of 05) all the other wines in this beautiful vertical. The 2010 is surely more classic then the 2009. It has more Pauillac typically. Neal Martin preferred the 2010 over the 2009. So long - pinnacle of Pauillac? This or 09. It’s not for me to say. I’d love to get the chance to taste those two side by side again when they are more developed. Philippe made the analogy that 2009 is the Barbie and 2010 is the Ken. The quality of both wines is such that after a very long decant you could actually be enjoying them already. But of course you would deprive yourself of an even more rewarding experience way further down the line. 2x Bravo! Mouton for 09 & 10.

2011: Difficult to be up after the 09 & 10. I needed to go back to the 06 first to “re-calibrate” my taste buds and be in a position to try and fairly assess/score this wine. The 2011 was actually quite good I thought and was in a relatively approachable place. Some lovely acidity - the wine was light on its feet. Got some kirsch, some saddle leather. Could actually drink this now. An early drinker, but a good one. Positively surprised. 92-94

2012: Even better then the 2011. For my money best of the “2nd Tier” (after 05, 09, 10). Just a bit more of everything compared to 2011. Great fruit, forest floor, quite approachable now. Another early but fantastic drinker. Very positively surprised - impressive! 94-96

2013: Ughhh. Harsh - really vegetal. Hard to decide which is the worse vintage - 2007 or 2013. If this is the best of the 1st growth Medoc wines of the vintage as per RP I will try and never have another bottle of this vintage again. First and last. Avoid! 86-88

2014/15 Barrel Samples: No scores as I just don’t have enough opinion to opine. Neal Martin likes the 2014 but he thinks the 2015 will be clearly better still.

Summary: Fantastic event. For my money there is (not surprisingly) one clear top Tier (2009/10 - and then still belonging in Top tier the 2005 with a small distance behind the 2009&10. In terms of today’s drinking it’s the 05, but the 09 & 10 just have SO much potential); followed by Tier II which are vines from lesser vintage which I would consider having again and can recommend (2012, 2008) followed by Tier III which are wines that others will enjoy more then me and which I think are good wines and maybe I just picked them up in a weak spot and maybe am not that qualified to judge at present (2006, 2011) and the Bottom Tier which are wines to absolutely avoid (2007 & 2013) as I would not be happy even paying a fraction of the market price, in fact I just don’t enjoy them at all.

  • Exclusive dinner with eight friends and 22 special wines.: Beautiful and classical wine with dark forest fruits and cassis, graphite, cedar and luxurious oak. The same impressions on the palate, licorice, luxurious and a beautiful balance between some pleasant sweetness and the acidity. Round and firm tannin. The wine was in the decanter for approx 5 hours and had opened up just a bit. Although showing some of its merits then, it is probably wise to wait until 2025 at least. Great and classical Pauillac. 96 – 97 for tonight.

  • Hard to give an accurate score without giving this a super long decant. Caramel, french oak, black currants, iodine and vanilla on the nose. The palate was very concentrated and big. This wine needs at least 15 years to show its best. It will be something special. The depth of this wine was very impressive.

  • Annual Comparative Bordeaux Tasting (2000/2005) (Chicago, IL): Lots of meaty and earthy aromas on the nose. This monster was just completely closed at the moment, and not very expressive at all. There was a surprising slight bit of tapenade on the palate, which was an interesting kick, but besides that, this is not showing much more. Next to the 2000, I would prefer the older Mouton at this stage.

  • 2015 New York Wine Experience Trip; 10/19/2015-10/27/2015 (New York City, NY): An opaque ruby/red blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc, this 10-year-old Mouton is starting to shed some of its baby fat. Ripe plum, violets, iron, orange zest and tobacco adorn both the nose and palate. Full-bodied, freshly acidic, seamlessly alcoholic and still hoarding substantial sweet tannins, it closes very long. This is the definition of an "iron fist in a velvet glove." It would be infanticide to drink it within the next five years, but those showing patience should be rewarded with three decades of hedonism. Drink 2020-2050.

  • Two Moutons: Very dark black red colour. An expressive, aromatically explosive bouquet. A bigger, but not a more complex, bouquet of spices, warm earth, dark roses, blackberries, savoury game meats and musk. There was also underlying minerality and plenty of spicy oak. I probably would have thought it a sensational nose (which it was), except that it was beside the 2010. On palate, seemingly more unresolved and raw than the 2010. Appearing firmly locked down, around a solid, tight core of red and black fruits. Huge architecture. Linear, focused and driven, but not without elegance. To me, the 2005 didn't quite have the acidity or the fineness of tannins of the 2010. Also, it is beginning to develop savoury secondary characteristics, truffles, dried herbs and tobacco. Again a very long finish, but with some firmness on the back. I don't doubt the quality here, it is a very special wine. I'd just give this wine 10-15+ years to come together. Cabernet Sauvignon 85%, Merlot 14%, Cabernet Franc 1%.

  • Good things come to those that wait! And this just keeps better and better, but what else should expect from a great terroir and the talented Philippe Dhalluin. Concentrated with layers of sweet, silky, opulent berries, velvety tannins, an attention seeking nose of cassis, cigar box, earth, truffle and Asian spice, the wine ends sensations of pure silk, velvet and opulence, that literally bathes your palate.

  • Bordeaux 2005 : Ten years on (Bordeaux Index London): Like biting into a lead pencil. Palate is coiled in yet subtle in its opulence. High tannins to the fore, with a slight raw aspect and closed down. Much substance is there, the juiciness is just underneath the tannic surface, but not yet coming out. Put in the back of your cellar, as this is special - a great Mouton in the making.

  • "International Business & Wine Society Mouton Dinner, Nomad, NYC." Very expressive nose of charcoal, tobacco, black fruits and aromatic herbs. Lean and tight on the palate but very dense and intense. Way younger than any wine in the tasting tonight. The finish is balanced and very grippy and fine with wonderful smoky roasted flavors. Seems like the long-distance winner down the road but way to early to drink this potentially perfect wine. 96+

  • Difficult to judge at this point but undeniably a great wine and potentially an exceptional wine. A smooth nose with raspberry, blackberry, tar/earth with aeration. Air time brings out the vanilla and sweetness from the wood, with almost young pinot-like brightness. Complex and even palate with dark fruit and tannins present but not aggressive. Light vanilla notes and faint herbs on the backpalate. Time will do well for this wine and it will certainly improve over the next several decades. 1.5 hour decant. 95+

  • Wow! As young as this is, it's absolutely compelling to sit and smell, and already really rewarding to drink. There's an incredible aroma that keeps building with air with ripe fruit, tobacco, walnut, cedar, graphite and more exotic spicy notes all coming together into an amazing fragrance. There's such refinement on the palate with fine grained tannins beneath the luscious, rich fruit giving it a very polished, glossy texture, and amazing length. Stunning wine.

  • First Growths Masterclass, Sydney. Double decanted 90 minutes prior to tasting. Medium red-purple colour. Meaty/bouillon nose with some black fruit, but dominated by savoury elements above plus char/smoke and leather. Palate follows with charcuterie and cassis and some tobacco. Nice taut tannic finish. Like this a lot - kind of the "wild child" of the flight.

  • United Cellars Grand Bordeaux Tasting 2013 (Royal Automobile Club, Macquarie Street, Sydney): Deep ruby with purple highlights and long slow legs. Medium intensity aromas of ripe blackcurrant, slight biscuit, slight caramel, cedar, slight spice, quite muted initially but opens in the glass with fruit, cream, ripe herbs and cedar becoming more pronounced. In the mouth the wine is incredibly smooth, black currant fruit tending to cassis, slight spice, medium plus acid chases the fruit, gentle surprisingly subtle long warm finish with very slight anise. • I have to say that this was the first time I tasted a 1st Growth (double blind) and the result couldn't have been more surprising for me.... and disappointing, either because I had no idea of what I was facing or because this bottle might have been an "off" one. I don't know that fact and I don't know if I will have the chance to taste this again to find out. Probably not. Either way, after knowing what I tasted, I checked CT notes and what I had was nowehere close to what these previous tasting notes express. With that being said, I can move on to my notes: Tasted double blind. Not decanted, served probably after 10-20 min max. after being opened. Medium to light cherry color, wide light rim turning red to brown (that's the very first thing that doesnt sound right). On nose shows some reduction at first, red fruit, subtle aromas of wood, freshness, a bit alcoholic, orange peel, candy, licorice. On palate it's medium bodied, a bit dry, balanced, medium acidity, barely no hard edges. With more time in glass gains complexity and seems more bodied. Finish was quite long. After the first taste I wrote down 87/88 but going back to the glass 10 minutes later, the complexity on palate and lenght convinced me of a much better, old style wine. Despite all this, a 89-90 pt bottle.

  • Decanted 5 hours. A solid glass clinging bead when swirled. Sweet spicy oak with good lift. A talc like powdery nose eventualy opens up and aromas bloom over time, towards the end of the evening gorgeous thickly scented blackberry and cassis scents arise. Palate: a lush neutral entry, perfectly balanced and not a hard edge to be seen. This was surprisingly easy to drink on its own - so elegant and silky. With steak, it stepped up and the tannin did its job making it an excellent combination. The food seemed to lengthen the finish of extremely fine tannin. Most enjoyable.

Sparkling polished black fruits are totally al dente ripe with sweet cassis and delicious juicy black plummishness. Very fine balance with deft use of oak integrating the right amounts of acid, fruit and alc structure. Top of the line and rightly vindicated when I heard the results. • Decanted for four hours, four times (an hour each decant). Nice dark color. Very well intergrated floral quality. There's blackberry, pencil shavings, earth, tar and a little casis. This is not ostentatious, just harmonious. The finish is quite long, gorgeous and velvety. This is a true sleeping beauty and I am not touching my second bottle for at least ten years. VERY Pauillac like and it is First Growth quality, it's just not awake enough yet, hence the quad decant. It seems that everyone is looking for some sort of deeper - alligorical meaning because of the hefty price tag. I always take price out of the equation when rating a wine, which is well deserved. This is the best Mouton since 1989. Drink 2014 - .

  • Anybody who bought this got hosed.

Decanted 6 hours. Forward exotic nose of expensive oak and sweet fruit. Color is redish black but not nearly as dark as Cos or Leoville Barton. On the palate sweet attack, but not that dense on the palate. Shocking really given its status. 2002-2004 were much more dense. Ok finish. Very flamboyant. Clerc Milion and D'armaihac were much better wines than this with better density/intensity and finish. Looks like they focused on volume vs quality at Mouton. Buy it for the label and status, but don't serve it to wine geeks unless you want to be embarassed. $700 a joke.

  • From the Outside Looking In-More 2005 Bordeaux (K&L Wines, San Francisco): Not quite as dark as the 2 previous wines. Distinctive, lively minty nose. Not massive on the palate, surprisingly easygoing, and showing a lot of its Merlot right now. This has reserves of fat and tannin that are more apparent on the finish. While very good, this did not strike me as particularly titanic nor as prototypical Pauillac in its aroma/flavor profile. Not a dud by a long shot, but certainly did not live up to its classification or price in the company of the other wines that were poured today.

  • Dusty dry palate that is very closed at this stage. Flavors of red licorice, currents and blackberry are most evident and very pure. A little minerality is showing through the already well integrated oak. Black fruits, tar and lead notes linger on the moderate finish. Balanced and well poised for the future.
Outstanding Quality 92 pts. This was very tannic at this stage and the acidity kept up with the body of the wine but the finish was lacking. I'm sure over time this will become a non issue.

  • Clear very dark garnet core of moderate intensity out to a ruby edge and thin watery rim - youthful. Clean vanilla, plum, oak, dense mulberry and plum aromatics of moderate intensity - youthful and a little tight still. Moderate body, acid, and alcohol with substantial but soft tannins. Moderate flavours of mint, earth, cedar, dark fruits, minerals. An amazing finish already - very long and full of mineral and dark fruit. Extremely well balanced and extremely impressive already. Can drink now (but it would be infanticide) but will easily develop for 25+ years. Wow!

  • 2005 Red Bordeaux Vintage Farr Vintners Masterclass (Vintners Hall, City of London): Colour lovely, but slightly watery at rim. Nose complex & delicious, but restrained. Very restrained also on palate, fruity, long and of obvious quality.

  • A stupendous wine, lovely depth, balance, fine tannins, and beautiful definition. If this is a substandard performance for a 1st growth, I look forward to trying a "100 point" effort.

  • As dense and dark as anyone would've expected. Big tannic monster built to last for decades. Very fruity nose of blackcurrant, cassis, ripe fruits. Tannins keep building up with times. Massive in the mouth, Mouton style which is drinkable now but certainly will offer much more in the future. LONG finish which last more than a minute. Truely great wine which I would give 95 now and will definitely merits more point with time.

  • A great Pauillac, with 84% Cabernet Sauvignon and 14% Merlot. I remember the discrete nose from barrel, but when tasted from bottle in London in February 2008, it shows a very succulent ripe cassis nose coming from the Cabernet Sauvignon. Even some bright ripe black cherry. Over one hour in glass, the aromas truly mixed a fresh black and red berry fruit basket and tobacco/mint freshness (only 1% Cabernet Franc and the rest Merlot). The palate felt richly contoured, with fine structure and tannic power. But very refined, almost silky, and far more elegant than the 2000 – which was also tasted alongside. A really super vintage, almost surprisingly soft. Just 13% alcohol, up one-tenth of a degree from last year. 95+

  • Powerful but shows great balance and will be a sensational wine with age. Smooth even now.

  • BORDEAUX 2005 / Cabernet rules; 4/5/2006-4/10/2006 (Bordeaux): Another great Pauillac, with 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 14% Merlot (last year’s only had 69% Cabernet Sauvignon and 13% Cabernet Franc), it had a more discrete nose than usual en primeur, much more discrete than last year. High atmospheric pressure perhaps restrained the wine’s expression. The palate was very solid, very concentrated, yet with velvety tannins and a very long finish with a note of dark chocolate. Just 13% alcohol, up one-tenth of a degree from last year. 94-97+

  • BORDEAUX 2005 / Cabernet rules; 4/5/2006-4/10/2006 (Bordeaux): A beautiful nose, spicy, cedar, with a concentrated yet also racy palate and lingering finish. A lovely Pauillac, made from vines averaging 50 years (no green harvesting in 2005) and made under the direction of my host at this morning’s tasting, Monsieur Polaert, who came from Lynch Bages to work at Clerc Millon in 2002. Lots of Merlot, but very flattering in its mid-level alcohol-level (13.1%) expression: 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot and 1% Carmanere! One of the Pauillacs of the vintage: 92-95

  • 2005 Bordeaux en Primeur; 3/26/2006-3/28/2006 (Bordeaux France): En Primeur tasting. Black cherries and plum aromas with similar flavors showing sweet spice and an intriguing mineral textre. Moderate power and tannins with lots of elegance for its youth in this great vintage. Great 94-96 point potential. 85% Cab Sauv, 14% Merlot, 1% Cab Franc.
