From 75cl, perfect cork, no staining back from wine end(!) decanted 1 hour, improved until final drop. Eucalyptus and spearmint on the nose; bone-dry entry with austere, slightly cooked dark red fruit; highly concentrated dry extracted/raisiny mid-palate with grumpy tannins and a dour, astringent edge; tough finish. I enjoyed this less than I did the 2003 and 2004 vintages (in recent memory), largely because those had some residual sweetness to temper the brusque dry tannic mid-palate. Food pairing is all, the fattier and richer the better. No hurry—it is just conceivable this might bloom in a decade's time. 90P(+?)

Mature Tempranillo tasting (Rioja, Ribera-del-Duero, Toro); 11/16/2023-11/17/2023: Appearance: Deep, dark ruby color with a slight garnet hue at the rim, indicating maturity. Nose: Intense and complex aromas of black fruits such as blackberry and black cherry. Notes of licorice, cedar, and tobacco, with a touch of vanilla from oak aging. Layers of earthiness, leather, and hints of spice. Palate: Full-bodied with well-integrated, velvety tannins that suggest aging potential. Rich and concentrated, showcasing flavors of ripe black fruits, including plum and blackcurrant. A backbone of acidity provides freshness, balancing the wine's power. Complex layers of dark chocolate, coffee, and a touch of sweet spice. Finish: A long and lingering finish with persistent dark fruit and subtle herbal notes. Tannins may continue to evolve and mellow with additional aging.

Beautiful and complex bouquet with vanilla, dark berries and some smoke. On the palate the same impressions. The wine starts to be slightly drying in the finish but is still a great pleasure.

100% Tinta de Toro from over 100 ungrafted, non-irrigated parcels aged between 50 and 100 yo located in the villages of Valdefinjas, Toro and El Pego. The fully destemmed fruit is cold-soaked with the skins for more than a week followed by fermentation and maceration over a period of 21 days. Aged in new French oak barrels for 19 months. 14,5% alcohol.
Luminous, somewhat translucent and slightly evolved black cherry color. The nose feels very ripe, noticeably sweet-toned and slightly evolved with aromas of dried cherries, some minty tones, a little bit of evolved raisiny fruit, light notes of soft strawberries, a hint of meat stew and a touch of plum liqueur. The wine feels juicy, quite big and rather silky on the palate with a full body and very ripe flavors of cherries and strawberry jam, some licorice root, a little bit of raisiny fruit, light oaky notes of vanilla and toasty mocha character, a hint of meat consommé and a touch of salty liquorice. The acidity comes across as pretty low, so the structure relies almost entirely on the ample and quite grippy tannins. The finish is long, spicy and quite grippy with a rich and powerful aftertaste of strawberry jam, some raisiny tones, a little bit of woody oak spice, light evolved notes of meat stew, a hint of cocoa dust and a touch of prunes. The wine ends on a quite warm and slightly boozy note.
Although all the Numanthias we tasted in this Numanthia 2011-1998 vertical were very big and ripe, this wine was one of those that felt a bit too over-the-top. This actually wasn't as big, chewy and extracted as some vintages, but instead the ripeness seemed somewhat excessive here; the wine was just way too sweet, soft, fat and flabby. When Numanthia wines are good, they are good because they can combine the big size and power with impressively muscular frame, but this was just tons of sweet, concentrated and voluptuous old-vine fruit with insufficient structure to keep it from coming across as blowzy. The overall impression was rather porty - without the charm of a proper Port wine. Not really my kind of wine.

Unfortunately this was likely heat damaged and also showing some VA. It would blow off to an extent after an hour or so sitting in glass to become tolerable. Vegetal, pruny, oak, earth and tobacco with faded cherry and blackberry liqueur.

This was in great form and got better over the next couple hours. Perfumed blue and red fruits, herby undergrowth and earth. Drinking very well with pork belly and steak, plenty more in the tank so no rush to open the last couple of bottles

Deep ruby color. Dark fruit on the nose and palate along with some smoke on the palate. Drank it over 2 nights and it was actually better on night two.

In the bouquet luxurious oak, vanilla and other sweet spices, dark berries and chocolate. On the palate the same impressions, a lot of juicy dark berries and good acidity. Full bodied and a great length. This bottle does not show any signs of being too old. On the contrary; there is room for some more years of ageing. Very beautiful wine.

Nothing to add to aromatics descriptors from other reviewers, just that it is entering its drinking window and benefits from AT LEAST 3 hours of decanter. I had a magnum so perhaps from a standard bottle it would need 1 hour less but definitely is a wine that either one waits 2-3 years more to full development or give it enough air. Last glasses (by that moment after 4 hours of air) really rendered the wine best expression of the night. I don’t think it is necessary to wait those extra 2-3 years, given the fact that after 4 hours it shows all signs of a wine that is reaching its plateau, but it’s key to let it breath enoug time. Rounded, muscular but in a pleasant way, tannins resolved

Decanted and drank over 2hours. Youthful. While mature and in it’s drinking window, there’s still plenty of life left here. Dark cherries, plum, oak, and a medium finish. Best bottle I’ve had so far.

@Pecorella w 明子。 Dark red color with a hint of rim-bricking. The nose gives off dark, extracted feeling with red berries and old leather. Heavenly attractive. The palate, thank Odin, is neither overtly fruit-driven nor extracted. Instead it's dominated by pristine and pure red fruit, cherries and red currants. Superb balance, intensity and spine. Beautiful acidity to go well with tonight's Italian food. The Toro earth gives this wine elevation. Medium length and little over on the simple side. The long finish has too much tannin for my wife's taste (88p) but cut lovely through the richer plates.
If you are looking for gobs of fruit, look elsewhere. If you enjoy your wines mature, you need to wait many years for this one. It's built to last.

Deep ruby color turning brick orange at the rim with a reflective edge. The nose gives off incense laden notes of dark red berries and old leather from the toasted oak. The palate, even at this age, shows how ripe and bold this wine once was with juicy dark cherry and black currants, yet aptly balanced by the acidity that was pre-eminent during the vintage. There are secondary flavors of baking spice and scorched Toro earth that linger throughout the long, dusty finish. Drink now until 2025.

Kleur: Diep ondoordrinkbaar robijnrood. 50 + Kleur: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 10 + Smaak / Afdronk: 16 + Algemeen / potentieel: 8 = 89/100
Color: Deep impenetrable ruby red. Aroma / bouquet: Dark and spicy bouquet, limited fruity. Taste / Finish: Tough and thick-juicy wine, limited fraiche, beautifully ripened tannins that still evoke a strong association with Kokindjes (soft sweet liquorice). Mouth-filling, long finish but with a somewhat limited complexity. General / potential: Pleasant wine with a limited complexity, the second vintage Numanthia which, although still seriously pleasant after 15 years, does not really show tertiary characteristics. 50 + Color: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 10 + Taste / Finish: 16 + Overall / potential: 8 = 89/100

Big Winter Reds: Drank single blind, this was my wine. Dense, tasty and fruity, with a touch of tobacco, tar and gravel. My #3 wine and I was surprised when it was revealed.
Duft.
Ekstra: På 2 dagen: Større tæthed i frugten.

decanted 45 min. monolithic, lots of wine-making technique, little genuine joy. robust & intense, it worked very well w/dinner, just less exhilarating on its own.
Coravin # 1 - 2005 Numanthia is still a beast, all chalky tannins, dark dark super sweet blackberries. Palate coating fruit, low acid, good staying power. 2020-2035?

Very warm day here at 30c. Made a point of ensuring the wine was served at 18-19c . The temperature is so important. Once it is above 20 it becomes So flabby and alcohol dominant. It was at 18/19 just perfect, yes very full but still plenty of fruit on the nose and on the palet. Good length altogether very satisfying with Tagliatelle Ragu and 36 month aged parmesan

Excellent.

2004 was universally and rightly declared to be a great vintage in Spain, which then cast a negative shadow over the 2005 vintage. I bought a good number of 2005s, especially from the Numanthia Winery, and can report that these 2005s proved to be highly enjoyable and surprisingly competitive with the 2004s. Pitch black with a half inch pour. On the second day opened, the wine was significantly smoother, mouth coating, and rich. Ample acidity keeps this wine refreshing. This 15 year old wine shows zero suffering from its advanced age, works well with a wide range of foods, including beef, and continues to keep getting even better each year, with no decanting needed.

Monthly Tasting Group HWS #143; Wines from the book "1001 wines you must try before you die" (By BS): Beautiful bouquet with a lot of sweet spices, earth, some mushrooms and pepper. On the palate dark berries, chocolate, sweet spices, coffee, brown spiced biscuit, a slight impressions of some celery, pleasant acidity and soft tannin. This bottle seems to be fully ready. I have a few more, so there will be a follow up in this note.

-- decanted approximately 45 minutes before initial taste -- -- tasted non-blind over 2- 3 hours --
NOSE: concentrated purple fruits; a bit smoky; oaky; moderately fumey (alc.); medium+ expressiveness.
BODY: violet – blood red color of great depth; no bricking; sediment present; full bodied.
TASTE: oaky; alcohol stands out (labelled at 14.5%, but it seems higher); deep, buried, dark red berries; a "big" wine that seems to be fairly extracted; from un-grafted vines of 70 to 100 years of age, but it all seems wasted by the heavy-handed winemaking; medium-low to medium acidity; barely any tannins left; hot; anonymous. Probably a coin flip as to whether more age will do this any good. Won't be buying again. I liked this less than my score suggests.

This wine seems to be improving with age. Dark berry, mocha and vanilla on a long 45-60 second finish. The tannin seem much more resolved than the bottle i had a few years ago and I believe the wine could be cellared for another 5 years.
N: Closed; Init notes of iodine with berries & pyrazines coming on? Intensity lurking?
P: Med body; RNDISH entry with NICE, almost swtish frt met by an astringent pucker which stays in touch with the init frt as it transitions into a LONG, balanced, ult pleasant finish with a fairly elegant tangy/swtness to the firming, yet unoffensive, dusty tannins. Just now hitting its stride, & should do well with food through its 20th? Impressively done! My EXC/EXC+, trending towards the higher. 94 pts WS, 93 Vinous (Raynolds), and 92 ea RJonWine & WA!

Concentrated, dark, ripe, big. This was come a long way from 5 years ago. Last time I had this, it was shut down and all I could taste was the high alcohol. This has come around nicely, and after an hour in decanter, was just singing. Huge on the dark fruit spectrum, tannins were smooth and silky. This has turned into quite a gem. Nothing is out of place anymore and although big, everything is in balance. Drink or hold. I plan to drink my last bottle in 4-5 years?

Big cherry and black berry flavors, retaining a spicy cedary component. Still has a firm structure, but the tannins are ideally integrated at this point. This bottle has surprisingly little sediment, but I'd still recommend a decant. These are ready to drink now and for at least another five years.

Deep- garnet Developed bouquet of baking spices, undergrowth, dried earth, exotic dried spices and ripe banana. Full-throated on entry with dense sweet tannins, hessian texture and bright acidity. Thickly coated mocha chocolate flavours with wild forest berries, tobacco, incense and spicy oak in the background. Modern, plush and seductive the wine exhibits complexity, sweet, seagrass tannins and a long, generous finish. Not a subtle wine but very more-ish!

Quite a nice wine. Very dark, with an aromatic nose centered on blackberry liqueur and caramel. Some spicy notes. Flavorful but not at all sweet, with a nicely lifted mid-palate and very soft, silky tannins. Definitely ready to serve, but not about to collapse. Glad I own a few more.

1.5 hour decant. This was style very big. It is modern, with a lot of fruit and oak. The alcohol was noticable and annoying at first. It calmed down some but the alcohol never completely went away. I can't but ask "Why?" to a wine like this, although it is slightly enjoyable.

One of the few wines we bought in multi-case quantity. Opaque black with a half inch pour. Strongly fruity black cherry, blackberry, and black currant. Still tannic upfront, dense, powerful, lush, and eminently ageworthy. Overall, a great example of Tempranillo as a big red wine, and at 12 years old, the first bottle of the 2005 that is close to being seamless.

Beautiful clear dark red. To me, this is just beginning to drink well. Another year may help the fruit to eat the oak that now lingers on the medium-long finish. A very polished wine, affording great pleasure. Not a quaffer but one to sip slowly and enjoy.

Opaque black, with purple bubbles when poured. Strong black cherry and blackberry are the primary smells, with secondary leather and earth. Very smooth entry in the mouth that veers into firm and drying tannin, juicy acidity, and a hit of alcohol, all three of which leave the mouth feeling stripped rather than caressed after the swallow. A superb example of how the Tempranillo grape can make wines as big, powerful, concentrated, and ageworthy as top Bordeaux blends and Cabernet Sauvignons. Needs another 5 years of bottle age to fully round and integrate.

Penetrating aromas of toasted spices, dried pottery clay, free-dried herbs, damson, fig, and prune develop in glass to mulberry, raisin, and date. Very complex! Super fine yet almost puckering dry powder texture that is wrapped in black fruit, damson, sour figs and Christmas cake. Quite a festive wine with warming alcohol, adding glycerol to the mid-palate and roundness to the back palate yet balanced with medium acidity. Full-bodied, monster wine that gives to dense, chocolate-coated tannins and an elongated finish. Some maraschino cherry, sweeter spices add more to the finish. Concentrated, typical Toro wine with great depth of flavour in a modern twist that is pulled off with aplomb. Still relatively youthful with layers of fruits and tannins structure to stay several more years in bottle. The higher extraction also seems to work with the fleshiness of the fruit and the savoury twist that is Spain.

C: One of the darkest wines I've seen, almost black. P: Fruity, oaky, a bit hot, and very full bodied, almost thick. I don't care for this at all, the taste overpowers everything, even some fairly spiced food. Just not my style, Parkerized I guess. Still young, FWIW, but I doubt I'd like it even with more years.

drank all wines without decant, popped cork a few hours before drinking over 4 hours. all wines were purchased at release, and stored properly. all wines were in prime drinking window, without any evidence of fading.
'04 numanthia numanthia 96: clear winner with that deft balance of sweet ripe fruit, concentration, and acidity - just gorgeous.
'05 numanthia numanthia 92: less fruit than the '04, which made it seem more tannic although still quite good. same fruit profile.
'04 pintia 91: slight brett on nose, good palate of sweet ripe fruit, I'm sensitive to brett so this was #3 in this tasting but the palate was quite delicious. hopefully other bottles will be clean.

Still dark ruby with good flavor. The wine looks ruby colored. The legs are medium. There is light sediment in the bottle. It smells like raspberry, red currant, strawberry jam and toast. A very good wine at 10+ years and will still be good 6-8 years out.

The wine has a deep ruby colour with some clear discolouration on the rim. It has a medium+ intensity on the nose of ripe and dried black and blue fruits, with plenty of plums, cherries and blueberries. There is a lot of oak characters, particularly the lovely nutmeg and vanilla notes, as well as some tertiary notes of leather, tobacco and a slight touch of barnyard. The wine clearly has plenty of evolution left and even retains the sappiness of good Tempranillo!
On the palate the wine is dry with medium acidity, full, ripe and smooth tannins, high alcohol, a medium+ intensity of ripe black and blue fruits and more of that marked tobacco and leather flavour. The finish is medium+ and the wine is very full bodied.
This is a very good quality Tempranillo from Toro and could only be improved if the alcohol was in slightly better check and if there was a touch more freshness to the wine. Still, this clearly has a good 5-10 years in it for the patient although it is drinking beautifully at the moment.

Big, heavy, rich and full powered. The rich fruit coated a good amount of the tannin which made this a delicious wine with the blue cheese we were having. Dark berries, liquorice, bacon and smoke were attacking the palate, there was acidity to stop it going over the top which was good. I really enjoyed this wine and it has clearly had some quality handling, but a bit big for me to have everyday.

Opened for two hours, then poured out a bit, but didn't get to taste much before it was retired for the evening, VV'd and chilled for some days. Unfortunately, Tempranillo seems to need to be consumed within several hours of opening or they turn. Which is what this did. My bad.

HDH holiday tasting (Chicago, IL): Very oaky, but somehow the insane amounts of fruit are able to absorb all that oak, and you don't end up picking splinters out after tasting it. There's a nice little bit of acidity to this, so this doesn't become one of those hot masses of fruit. I'm also impressed that the heat here wasn't extreme, though I likely wouldn't be drinking too much of this at one sitting.

Similar to other tasting notes. Beginning to enter its drinking window, but not quite there yet without 3-4 hours in the decanter. The nose, though, was most expressive right away (i.e., earth, smoke, tobacco, dark fruit, etc.), but faded a bit as the night wore on. In the mouth, though, things got better. At first, the tannin and structure of the wine dominated, but this settled at around the 3.5 hour mark to reveal a glimpse of what this wine might very well become in another 5-10 years.

This wine needs some more time. Nose of smoke, dark berries, licorice, dried cherries, and hints of sage. On the palate, still walled off, but there are hints of cherries and dark berries peeking through. Thoroughly dominated by the oak treatment and substantial tannins. A little high on the alcohol but the raw material seems pretty good. If scoring 92-94. Hold.

Nose: Even with a 4+ hour decant, the nose is slightly reticent with black cherries, smoke, leather, licorice, black raspberries, and some violets. As it finally opens up, it becomes more ethereal and floral.
Taste: Full bodied with medium/high acidity and chewy tannins. The structure is still very present, but it isn't obtrusive with black cherries, violets, incense, licorice, leather, and some smoke notes.
Overall: This is still young, but it's also really damn good. This clearly has a lot of life left and it's worth cellaring further.

Big fruity wine, stood up to baby back rib dinner and worst service we have had at a famous rib place in Delray that I won't name but you have to order your ribs ahead of time, and then for most of us that night, they screwed up the order and acted like it was our fault. The Numanthia is a fascinating wine, has long time to give, not always sure I like all of it but time will tell.

Black with a deep ruby rim. Big, powerful wine but with lots of character. Anise, focused blackberry essence, lemon rind, and minerality. Full bodied on the palate, some rustic tannins on the finish but it's that kind of wine. Needed an hour + of air to open fully.

Dark red; sweet and smoked nose, some licorice, mulberry; lots of spices plus some caramel, quite acidic afterburn; lots of power, very masculine, brute force rather than finesse

Regular dinner group (By PvD @ Savarin): The wine was popped and poured and the bouquet still a bit locked because of this probably, but it showed ripe dark berry fruits and some chocolate. Same on the palate. Modern made with a lot of ripe dark fruits, beautifully integrated oak and also good acidity and round tannin. Beautiful wine, starting to show its elegance beside the concentration. Lovely now and certainly still around 2020.

Decanted for 30 minutes before drinking. The wine has changed considerably since the first time I had it. On the nose there is a tanginess with some red berries. The oak and richness that I associated with this wine was not prevalent. The palate showed more tanginess. It comes across as being more alcoholic than its 14.5%, which isn't a great quality. Not much in the way of secondary flavors.

Big and powerful with delicious extracted black fruit. Wonderful mouthfeel with a smoky meat texture in the mid palate. Youthful, No problem going many more years.

PnP. Dense, brooding and with reductive stink and etoh. It does have fleshy fruit cut with firm tannins and a little acidity (I think). This was okay with a deep dish sausage pizza, but would destroy most other food. I don't have much hope that this will become beguiling in any future state. Seems that it was at it's best when young with fresher fruit. I hope to be surprised with the last bottle in a few more years.

Can't really rate this. Upon opening, this was closed for business, the alcohol drowned out every other flavour in the wine. Decanted for about 1.5-2hrs and it started to show a little better, display some richness and concentration but I still didnt get much out of this. Feels like this just needs a lot more time

Closed for business. I aerated and decanted this for an hour. Showed some savory notes with good acidity. Tannins on this are muscular and this seemed to need a lot more time in the decanter or a few more years in the bottle.

unbelivable deepnees and length, powerful, fullbodies, complex, red ripe fruits, mocha, coffee, chocolate and barriquenotes, soft and silky tannins. starting to reaching its peak, drink it over the next 5 years

Purple. Needed about thirty minutes to open and shine. This finished off a barbecue / grill out dinner with great fruit, mature tannins , and a long finish. These are drinking really well right now!

I chilled this a little before opening and it was quite tasty with spaghetti. Put in back in the fridge for a couple of day and the chill did not diminish the dark fruit notes or tannins...quite a nice drinker now and should only get better.

Ditto last note. Even after double decant, very tannic w moderate concentration of black fruits beneath. Question whether tannins/fruit will ever balance out. Try again in 3+ yrs.

En bouche, ample at fort gouteux. Finale longue!

Consistent with many other opinions here, I also found this wine to be rather muddled and non-plussing. The drinking window indicated on this site is 2011-2021; well, good luck with that. Those of you who hoard this wine beyond ~2015 are going to be disappointed. It lacks the acidity and tannins to hold up for very long. The fruit is still somewhat dark and intense, but it's dessicating and muddying up. Notes of boysenberry, plum, prune, graphite, and leather. The finish is quite long and enjoyable, but I've outgrown this winemaking style.

A little hard to like. Nice flavors but harsh on the mid palate and on the finish. Just seems discordant without reason. I have no more of these and I am fine with that.

Hmm, maybe I had an off bottle, but I couldn't find anything nice to say about this wine - almost black in colour, aromas of prunes and oak, and palate over-extracted and woody. I agree, aging will not help matters. Not my style.

From Magnum. Opened for hours and it did not change throughout. Heavily purfumed nose of sweet red and black fruits with flower petals. Not as luxurious on the palate. Tannins were smooth but dense and chewy. Sweet red and black fruits but also a touch of sourness. Oak was a little heavy for me and the finish was not as long as expected. Perhaps it still needed more time to fully come around.

Nose: Sweet, black fruits with cassis and hints of smoke. Palate: After aeration very soft tannins, spicy, black fruits and a medium length finish. Very solid but I wonder what this first bottle of mine would have been like a year or two ago (I think more structured and interesting). My next and last bottle will be drunk within a year, maybe 6 months. Good stuff from Numanthia.

Inky black. Aromas of black fruit and leather. This opened up significantly after the first hour. Ripe fruit, along with a decent dollop of oak. The tannins are still pretty prominent on the finish. A nice wine to pair with grilled steak.

Dark purple red. Deep and spicy bouquet with ripe black berry fruits and some chocolate. Concentrated with ripe cassis and blackberries and still firm tannin. Concentrated and a lot of sweetness. Really starts too loose its baby fat and there is still enough future.

Lovely nose of blackberries, wood spice/tobacco and vanilla. Disappointing on the palate, thin, with plenty of heat and a short finish. Will let breathe over night and reevaluate.
Dark, opaque garnet. Nose of blackberry, cedar, and espresso. Ripe full palate of blackberry, black cherry, tobacco, and espresso. Excellent length. Delicious acidity. Toasty oak is nearly integrated. Grippy tannins. Excellent, balanced wine. Built to last.

Deep red, almost opaque. Dark berries, some cedar and a faint hint of roses, almost like a good Barolo. Very potent, great concentration and well build. Powerful but smooth tannins. Good length with distinct alcohol but not disturbing in any way. A great “adult” wine representing the classic school.

Still purple red. In the concentrated bouquet a lot of spiciness, ripe black forest fruits and beautiful oak. On the palate the same impressions. Also a pleasant dose of sweetness and acidity. Besides being a blockbuster the wine also starts to show elegance now. A great pleasure already and it will probably show more and more finesse over the coming years. 92+

Tasted completely blind and the note says; chocolate, black fruits, lush, soft tannin, but not really exiting. Knowing this wine quite well (see my other notes), I wonder. Has this wine beenn stored too warm, or is it an off bottle? Not sure. Anyway, I scored it 88 this time.

Enjoyed this at the extended family annual Christmas party at Lugano. Enjoyed it with my Uncle Ed. The wine has a wonderful underlying sweetness, and is light on its feet, while still managing a wonderful fruit profile. I would describe this wine as a feminine wine, with approachable, dusty fruit. It really started to sing after being opened for an hour.

Decanted half an hour before tasting. Dark fruit with some creaminess on the nose and a mixture of power and elegance with an extraordinary long finish. Plum, balsamic notes, coffee-licorice on the palate. Initially a bit alcoholic and tannic, but the wine improved considerably at the end, showing an excellent shape right now. Paired perfectly with acorn-fed Iberian pork loin.

Decanted for 2 hours. Dark rubi color. Black and red ripe fruit on nose, cinnamon, alcohol. On palate orange peel, alcohol, dryeness, tannins still too present, concentrated. Long finish. This needs more time but definetively these Numanthia style is not for me. Alcohol always stands above of fruit. 89-90.

Drank over three days. Very concentrated with a lot of sweetness; almost like syrup. Black fruits like blackberries and ripe cassis, also some spices, oak and coffee. Day one and two the sweetness dominated. Day three good acidity and tannin showed more and made the wine more complete. It is probably best to wait at least approx another 4 years.

Spanish Tasting (Twin Cities): Improved over time and needs to be cellared for a while. Spice, menthol, dirt, raspberry, oak and vanilla. On the palate it picked up some sweet fruits and has a medium to long finish. Do decant a while at least 3 hours as it got better over time.

Spanish Tasting at John's (Minneapolis): Purple color. Nose has prominent cedar, spice, black fruit. The palate is deep, oak and spice predominate early, but evolves to show nice seetish blackberry and blackcheery fruits. Boldly tannic, but with a long finish. As most have noted this screams for more cellar time and/or a mondo decant.

– popped and poured – – tasted non-blind over two hours immediately after uncorking, then again on Day 3 (approx. 48 hours after uncorking) –
NOSE: Day 1: oak; pepper; earthy; purple fruits. Day 3: slightly funky; tight; dark non-descript fruits; oak.
BODY: black-purple color of great depth; medium-full to full bodied; fine particulate matter present.
TASTE: Day 1: oaky; black licorice; earthy, but not funky; dark fruits; sweet oak; coffee grounds; loads of coarse/grippy/drying tannin, but there seems to be deeply-embedded acidity holding it up ---- still on the tannic side of well-balanced (between acid and tannin) for now; 14.5% alc. is not noticeable; I think this will greatly benefit from more cellar time. Day 3: minerally; dark purple fruits; some oak; leather; earthy; smoke; I think this is more complex than what is readily apparent today; tannin is still coarse/grippy/drying; alcohol is still not noticeable. Needs time.

When popped the wine was completely closed on the nose. After some time muted aromas of dark berries, marzipan and alcohol showed, but it never impressed. The taste was very heavy with just a hint of berries covered in alcohol. In my opinion, the wine is way too extracted and not balanced at all, and it definitely needs food that matches it's heaviness. Although it might improve with time, I guess it all comes down to a matter of taste with this wine. I just don't like it.

Wow -- this is a dense sheet of black fruit, gritty tannins, spice and barrel notes despite 5+ hours in the decanter. Love the richness and flavor profile. But what will it take to soften and integrate? Still quite young, so I remain optimistic.

What is it about Spanish wines that makes me taste high end XO congnac? The flavor profile here was red fruit, some earthy spice and the aroma and sweet taste of Hennesy XO cognac. I experienced the same thing before, with Moncayo's Aquilon, but that is a Grenache and this is a Tempranillo. Dark in color, strong smooth red fruit nose, a flovorful but not unctious mouth feel and a long finish. Five years have served this wine very well. The tanins are loosening up and the wine is approachable now. This was just right after a 4 hour decant.

LVMH at Binny's (Binny's Lincoln Park, Chicago IL): nose: pungent and powerful nose of cedar, deep tones of dark red cherries, herbs, black fruits, floral tones and a touch of black currants. Well balanced and very complex with good depth on the nose as well
taste: full bodied with very chewy tannins and medium+ acidity. Young and a bit rough on the palate but with robust and refined tones of cedar, dark red cherries, herbs, black fruits, dark berries and licorice tones
overall: Excellent depth on both the nose and palate. While the nose was pretty open, the palate certainly reminded you that this is a young wine. This will be interesting to check in on in a few years

Some wines are great out of the bottle, some need time to breath. This wine is very good out of the gate and gets even better over time. This wine is drier then most, but properly balanced with fruit and just gets better and better over time. Great smooth mouthfeel and texture, not thin, not too much fruit, great balance of fruit and tannins overall. You'd swear this is an interesting cab rather then a tempranillo, an old world wine with a new world taste.

This ripe, dense red has a lot going on. The black fruit flavors lean toward blueberry and cassis, deepened by smoky oak and supported by firm, muscular tannins. Will only become more complex with time. (Best after 2011) -JD94

Numanthia Seminar (Binny's South Loop, chicago IL): nose: fairly tight, but what is there is very pretty with bits of violets, black cherries, black currants, dark berries, cedar, raspberries and some whisps of smoke. There is a real elegance to the nose, but there is also a robustness at the same time
taste: good firm tannins with medium/high acidity and a excellent full bodied feel. Rather classy with great tones of cedar, black cherries, black currants, raspberries and some hints of smoke
overall: needs time for sure as it is rather tight right now. I love the contrast that it presents between elegance and robustness, this really seems to have a great future and should be a very interesting wine when its mature

Bodega Numanthia Seminar (Binny's South Loop - Chicago, IL): Fantastic bottle of juice!!! Slightly more opaque than the 2006. Deep ruby (rather than 2006's purple) color. Still some purple tint near core. Beautiful full nose. Lots of layered dark elegant fruit. Blackberries, dark cherries, with licorice, and some nice heat that's enjoyable with its accompanying fruit. Excellent on palate. Rich and extracted showing the lenth, purity and finesse of a $100 Napa Cab to be honest. Plums, blackberries, leather and some sure signs of quality oak. Medium high acidity, alcohol and tannins. Very well integrated as a whole. Expansive finish with a full, round and opulent mouth feel. This, for the money, was the wine of the evening. I recommend anyone grab a bottle of tihs if it's in your price range and you are looking for a blockbuster stlyed New World bottling. You get a lot of bang for your buck - I promise.

I was completely blown away by this wine. I paired it side-by-side with a 2003 Quilceda Creek. I fully expected the Quilceda Creek to blow this wine away, so we started with the 03 Quilceda. Surprise. Just the reverse was true. The Numanthia not only paired perfectly with the soft, plum, and vanilla smooth Quilceda, but it easily could have been its sister wife. They are twins in almost everyway. The Numanthia was quite open and ready for business. No need to wait. This is a wonderfully feminine wine, which works particularly well in the summer, and which has all of the characteristics of a Quilceda Creek, but with a little extra something. The group was unanimous that this edged out ever so slightly the 03 Quilceda Creek. I am going to closely guard my remaining few. Yummy stuff.

Thought this was going to be as drinkable as a brick, but thought I would give it a try anyway. Deep violet in color, closed nose giving off some buttery oak, dark fruit, smoky mesquite. Tight on the palate, though good creamy fruit and dark cocoa comes out behind the wall of tannin. Way, way too young, but promising. Check back in 5 years.

Nice nose of red & black fruit, smoke cocoa. On the palate those same fruits are echoed with some chocolate and mineral, but all of this is overwhelmed by unresolved tannins. There is medium acidity and a finished that is dominated by dry tannins. I would love to see how this turns out in 5-10 years...Im just not sure whats gonna be left when the fruit starts to fade.

Decanted too long. DRATS! The evening wore on, and we were admittedly having too much fun playing Yahtzee Free for All, and alas we made it to the final Toro sensation. But the fruit had oxidized for too long and what little was left had been swallowed whole by the puckering tannin structure of this beast. However, I do remember what it tasted like when I first poured it and the fruit was reckless and fresh; I would buy this again on that taste alone...and not leave it in the decanter for six hours. Truly a beautiful and sure to be long-lived wine, but be forewarned: no more than 2-3 hours in the decanter.

Numanthia continues to be a great contemporary Spanish wine. It's very much the archetypal representative of Toro terroir, expressing an overwhelmingly powerful bouquet of espresso roast, hot stones, black brambly fruit and farmyard animal. I think this is better than the 2004, which famously got 98 Parker points (surely an exaggeration, but still...) Cloves, cinnamon, leather, layers and layers of fruit, and near-perfect structure. This is a great wine. About €36 in Spain ($50) - surely a great value.

Incredibly tannic, even when you're already drunk. But unlike the first few times I had it this time it was more approachable and fruit forward. And this has nothing to do with my palate or level of drunkeness, I swear! Anyway, good shit. great structure, if not finessed. Powerhouse stuff. After two days in the fridge it was still tannic but very good. Came together, which to me suggests long term aging potential. I will sit on the remaining bottles and drink every few years to see where it's at, but it ain't goin' anywhere quick.

A big, fat, rich wine with mostly dark fruit flavors, ink, anise, and bittersweet chocolate. Extracted and alcoholic, but not hot. I had no problem with the tannins either; they're resolved enough for this to be enjoyable. It's all a bit simple at the moment, but it will undoubtedly grow more intriguing with cellar time. For now, it's just pretty tasty.

An easy evening with friends: A mixed set of wines. (@ PVa): Surprisingly open. A lot of alcohol, lavas and chocolate in the bouquet. Loaded with fruit, still very primary!! Cassis, cherries. Pepper. Can't remember the last time I had such a tannic wine ... wait, actually, one of the bottles of '03 Numanthia I had a couple years ago comes to mind. Glints of absolutely gorgeous stuff here: blackberry, currant, with thyme and brown spices, but it was hard to consistently grasp anything because of the tremendous tannins that overpowered everything. This was a restaurant purchase, so it only had about an hour decant while we enjoyed champagne, and still at three hours when we finished the bottle we were thinking it might just be beginning to open up. My score here is somewhat speculative, reflecting my anticipation that this is going to be another outstanding Numanthia, maybe not the '03 or '04, but that it is going to come together beautifully in four or five years at the earliest. This needs seriously long cellaring. 92-94.

Wine Cellar Spain (Wine Cellar, Cape Town): (Tasted Blind): A deep to opaque red. Notes of mineral, liquorice, tilled soil and leather jacket mingle with a touch of spice. A deep, brooding entry with chewy tannins and noticeable alcohol. Plenty of fruit extract gives a tight frame that will benefit from a few years in a bottle. Elegant and with an extended finish. Made from Tinta de Toro grapes grown on limestone at an elevation of 700m.

Mixed wines (Terkels appartment): Tight black color with a very thin purple rim. Black cherry, black berries, buttered milk, cream caramel and some roasted oak on the nose. On the palate it is very powerful with dark berries , black cherry and black ink, and on the midpalate some tobaco, buttered milk and licorise. The finish is dominated by very dry tannins, but acidity brings along the mouthwater and balances the wine very well.

Yikes, Not my favorite combination of aromas comming off this wine. Anise, alcohol and petroleum byproducts/cleaning supplies, Deep fruit once you get past the cleaning liquid smell. Mouth drying tannins. Okay I'm going to decant this 2 hrs min and am sure it will improve markedly. Not pleasant so far 88pts?.

Had with lamb rack, potatoes gratin, and a brussel sprout caserole. Decanted about 1.5 hours before serving. Perfect compliment for the meal....Huge, dark, but incredibly well-balanced with a solid backbone and structure. Amazing nose of grilled meat, minerals, berries, lead pencil, and hints of violet. Solid 45+ second finish. Showing extremely well for its age but will be better in 5+ years.

Heavy alcohol and developing tannins - don't drink this without food right now. Some of my thoughts were blackcurrant, graphite, violets, dried meat (fleeting, around 3 hours in) and mango (weird, i know) in the nose. Had some right after opening, then the rest 4 hours later - after a few old riojas. It became considerably more tannic, but the heavy handed alcohol subsided slightly. Maybe get another to put away for 10-20 years......i dunno.

Very Complex Nose with Cherry and Cassis, later Chocolate, Cinnamon and Licorice Palate is very tannic but not unbalanced with nicely integrated Acidity. Not much Fruit Aromas yet. Will Open next Bottle not before 2014 90+ with very much potential

Opened this expecting big, brooding and perhaps inaccessible (had not looked at other notes, just grabbed a bottle). But boy is this a charming, friendly, fruit forward bottle. Elicited the very rare 'this is really good' from my wife who has no tolerance at all for thought provoking wines. Cherry on the nose and palate, mouth filling flavors, clean and long finish. Very nice.

I was pretty shocked at how good this was, especially as I drank it so young. I'm keen to get more of it now. The wine gave me a shiver down my spine which is a rare, positive sign.

Strange that this wine deteriorated with time after being opened. It was excellent with dark fruit, espresso and well integrated oak on first tasting. Next day when I thought it would even be better, it had tightened up so much I thought there was no way I could be drinking the same thing. So if you can help it, just put this badboy away for five to ten years, if not; pop, pour and enjoy!

From magnum. Dark fruit and leather, but totally overwhelmed by firm, mouth-gripping tannin. Like chewing on tree bark - unenjoyable at this stage. Despite being very young, and the large format, I wouldn't bet on this wine ever being something I'd enjoy.

Medium to dark purple, lots of oak followed by gummy black fruits, menthol and violets as it opened, smoother and more suave than the Termes and not much more complexity, very drying on the finish, don't see time helping, the complexity is just not there

Very fruity and enjoyable right from start. Full-bodied with a long, long finish. Very different to my experience with the 2004 which was harsh and tannic right after popping the cork. Decanting made it worse. Still I'm sure that too much air is NOT the right thing for the 2005 at this stage of life either. Drank it over three days and it became more and more tannic and the fruit faded out. The first day proved that it is a pleasure to drink, the development over the nex two days proved that this a long-term wine with a huge potential. For this price it is a steal.

Dark red color with a hint of rim-bricking.

Farven er tæt/ret dyb mørkerød.
Duft.

Very warm day here at 30c. Made a point of ensuring the wine was served at 18-19c . The temperature is so important. Once it is above 20 it becomes So flabby and alcohol dominant.

Deep- garnet
Developed bouquet of baking spices, undergrowth, dried earth, exotic dried spices and ripe banana.

Lovely nose of blackberries, wood spice/tobacco and vanilla. Disappointing on the palate, thin, with plenty of heat and a short finish. Will let breathe over night and reevaluate.

Tasted up against a Clio. This wine proved more structured and complex. Some cola, dark fruit and red fruit on the nose. Still a big wine with present tannins but nice complexity as it bounced on the palate. Full bodied and nice finish. Probably best drunk in another 3-5 years.

Fight night wines (my house): nose: very aromatic with cassis, smoke tones, floral bits, black berries, dark cherry along with some vanilla and tea leaves
taste: nice attack of cassis, black berry, dark cherry, vanilla, raspberry, and chocolate tones
overall: very young with a great attack and finish. THe tannins are sure kicking, but this nose was open for business after some decanting and it will be a lot of fun when the flavor profile catches up with the nose

An easy evening with friends: A mixed set of wines. (@ PVa): Surprisingly open. A lot of alcohol, lavas and chocolate in the bouquet. Loaded with fruit, still very primary!! Cassis, cherries. Pepper. A lot of everything. Also herbs and spices and good oak. For real finesse the wine is still to young. I trust it will come with ageing and then the score might gain.

Nice nose but still somewhat closed after a 2 hour decant. Deep berry flavors with lots of cherries. Very tannic. Almost chewy at this point. Hints of cocoa, and vanilla are evident even at this point. However, this wine needs time. At least a couple of years. Finish is long but a bit hot. As I said, time!

Numanthia at the Masters (Ken's): Full open nose has loads of sweet dark fruit. Rich, extracted and massive on the palate. Barrel sample - keep 'em buried in the cellar.

Masters and Numanthias (Northbrook, IL): Great nose with violets, dark chocolate, cherries, blackberries and vanilla. Palate is immense with huge red and black fruit flavours over cocoa, spice, toasty oak and vanilla. Grippy, tannic mouthfeel with a long finish.

Deep black color and an oak heavy nose. There are hints of black berries, but it's completely overpowered at the moment.

This wine does it for me but need to give it a few years, it's just too big and took too long to open up. Wow, can hardly wait!

Lots of oak, so taste is dominated by vanilla. Dark fruit, some spice, and strong tannins. Will wait on drinking any more.

Good core of dark fruit, vanilla, spice and smoke but oh so tannic! Big, chewy tannins that became increasingly prominent with air. Not ready yet.

Tasted at Acker
Color: Opaque Purple
Nose: Raspberry and Oak
Taste: Very firm tannins in its youth; Full bodied and big; good length; a fruit bomb without too much complexity right now but delicious and has plenty of time to develop.
