Pearl of Burgundy gala dinner: Rich and oxidative with nutty, autolytic notes. Not the biggest fan - didn’t have much tension but others at the table liked this a lot. To be fair, not as oxidised as I expected a Bollinger this age to have been.

This was really at its apex or perhaps on the back side beginning to decline. Minimal psscht on pulling the cork. Still some bubbles in the glass once poured. It wasn’t too fragile, I just don’t think there’s a thing to be gained by holding. Lots of cinnamon stick, caramelized sugar, still fairly vibrant acidity. Not a lot of mushroom here. This was very nice with a hamachi crudo

I went into drinking this, concerned that this was over the hill - I was wrong (or at least, couldn’t tell). Drinking this, with effectively 24 years of age, was magical. Notes of brioche, pear and almond dominated the nose. On the palette, more pear, some apple, faint lemon, more dominant brioche and almond, and a hint of butter on the finish. Amazing. That said, I'm likely drinking my last remaining bottle of this vintage in the coming year (2022).

A boire

The 1997 Bollinger La Grande Anne is over the hill, pet of the fruits have faded away, left behind is the thick cheesy lees and angular acidity. Fatty leesy, maturing criteria and bruised apples, cheesy brioche with Grower Champagne with leesy texture, 50% Chardonnay and 50% Pinot. High acidity (cool vintage?), an over the hill Tarlant? 1988? (80/100)

From jeroboam. Well, this is one of the better 1997s that I remember having. The nose here shows some ripeness apple and a slight bit of bread, but it is also mineral and there's a sort of leanness here as well. The palate is definitely on the cusp of losing the remaining primary brightness and there's a slight bit of earthiness and mushroom just about to emerge. However, there's still a good amount of citric acidity to keep this fresh.

Just a fantastic bottle. Pretty much all you want in a mature bottle. Got better and better over 3 hrs open (def open 1 hr ahead of time). Fantastic honeyed nose, with nice autolytics and some light creme brulee. Was medium bodied, nice creamy fruit, nice minerality, and long finish. Great, just great.

Golden hue of maturity. Great volume and depth. Pronounced aromas of pastry, apples, some tertiary aromas of cheese and mushrooms. Unbelievably fresh on the palate! Citrus aftertaste, high acidity. Very mellow with medium-full body.

Champagne - 100 Vintage and NV Champagne; 12/15/2015-12/15/2020: During a vintage Champagne tasting at a Merchant. Very unique nose... Nutmeg, butterscotch and a bit oxidative, mushrooms as well. First a little weak in the smell. Coming more towards yellow apples and canned peaches, scents of warm baguettes.
In the mouth a hint of my grandmothers old basement immediately. This disappear fast. Nice balanced acidity and pretty good fullness. Long and fine in the mouth, but perhaps lacking a little fruit flavor for my taste.
50 + 5 + 12 + 16 + 8 = 91p.

Tasted blind. Golden yellow color with clear signs of aging. A bit unclear. Smells of sea spray and toast. The smell is a bit reserved, almost muted when compared to the Veuve Clicquot Grande Dame 1996 tasted next to it. But the taste is heavenly. Sharp and quite lively acidity on the tip of the tongue with lots of fresh bubbles turning into a powerful and slightly sweet mid-palate with tons of fallen apples. Ends with a bang with an extremely long finish which is more intense than the GD. A very good wine.

Saturday night at The Papies (The Papies, Elizabeth St, London): Once again (had this 1yr ago and rated 93) this is a great champagne to enjoy at this stage. In a way an unsung hero in this usually skipped vintage. Has a beautiful balance between richness and firm acidity, open and full on the nose, rich toasty side, ripe rich fruit , full champagne with a long finish. Just beautiful to enjoy now and doesn't seem to be loosing any life. 93-94

I'm wondering whether disgorgement dates (April 2005 in this case) will become more and more important for this wine as I've noticed quite some bottle variation emerging over the last couple of years. This was showing better than I'd hoped. Didn;t take notes at the time but it tasted. This was dark in the glass, extremely rich and had was gaining a nuttiness that I would assosciate with the 1990. (97's seem to move very fast in their evolution). Like mnay 97s it feels older than it is but as with my previous bottle the bead gives the game away. It might have been my cravings but I definately tasted tobacco in there some where in the finish which was fairly tart. Excellent cigar champagne. 1 more bottle of BGA 1997 left. It I'll be sad to open it as this was the one that really got my into wine when I first tasted it in early 2007.
Sorry for the rambling note. The bottom line is, drink now while waiting to open any 96s or 95s if you're lucky enough to have them.

DAWGS December 2010 - Champagne et. al.: Tasted non blind. Opened and served immediately. Light yellow color in the glass, clear looking throughout with tiny and steady beading. Beautiful almost smokey nose but slightly clipped palate. Palate seemed to want a cooler temperature but the nose needed this to be a bit warmer. The bubbles are starting to soften. Not as unctuous as my last bottle in October 2009.

Mid to deep matt gold in colour. Cork now straight. Big nose, meaty and vinous, similar on palate, quite rich, slightly yeasty and meaty with oodles of mineral and a touch of spice. Very Bollinger. Decent length and showing well. Ready and unlikely to improve further. ****

I've had the 1997 more than a few times (one of my faves), and it seems to have changed quite suddenly over the last year. For my palate, the fruit seems a little more subdued and the drier nuttier side seems to be emerging. Tasted this along side an old bottle of Krug Grande Cuvee (old style label) which had had a lot of cellar time. I expected the BGA to taste extremely youthful along side it but it seems to be developing the feel of an older champagne though with a mousse that betrays its youth. Still great but now evolving. I'm waiting to see how others find it over 2009. As '97 was a funny year, I'll be interested to see how this develops over the next 18-36 months.

Prestige Cuvees at Woodland Hills Country Club (Woodland Hills Country Club): Lemon and soft butter on the nose. Soft and smooth with good acidity. Opened to celebrate our 10th anniversary. This presents a curious mix with a mature smelling, yeasty nose that is followed by a fairly brisk, narrow palate with a bit of smoky minerality amidst citrus fruits. I thought we might have served it a bit cool, but even as it aired and warmed the profile didn't really change a great deal. OK bubbles but far from captivating.

This is showing better than the '96 for right now. Nose is masculine with roasted almonds, caramel, toasty brioche, and fresh yeast. The palate is rich and aggressive with toast, pears, orange blossoms, and again a nuttiness. Not too yeasty or chalky on the palate. Nice soft acidity on finish. Nicely made Champagne. Can't wait until those '96's come around to maturity.

The wine was a light & bright straw-gold colour with very persistent bead. The nose was certainly unpleasant, smelling of vegetal and specifically of cabbage. Some vaguely pleasant smoky notes peeked out with airing, but the cabbage dominated. At least the palate showed a little lemon, but again the cabbage was repeated. Pretty much undrinkable.

Consistent notes wth last bottle (Sept 06), big, winey, full, rounded, nicely between primary fruit and secondary complexity. Still plenty of fizz and good mousse. Lovely as an (hefty)aperitif and then with wild mallard. Still good with the last glass, though more consistent than the last bottle which improved with the last glass. Ready but no hurry at all. May not be the lonest lived or most classic vintage, but very good and very enjoyable.

Very fine bead although did seem to fade quickly. Bright straw yellow. Intense nose reminiscent of an aged chardonnay wine. Very yeasty, biscuity and doughy. Rich and fruit forward on the palate, with butter and caramel and some citrus in in the midpalate. Dry finish. Complex, although I think it needs more time to resolve fully.

Lovely golden color – fine mousse. Intense, wine-like nose that has an oatmeal, a toast and a floral element. Quite complex, but showing youth as opposed to maturity. I believe this will deepen and gain in complexity with time (hard to imagine as it is super today). Rich almost heavy palate that is supported by a wonderful effervescence. Like a dancing bull. There is a lot going on and I don’t think everything is aligned tonight. I would keep other bottles for a few years – I don’t know if this will ever match the brilliant ’96, but it should come close. (18++)

A great colour - mid-gold. The nose this time is full of coffee - layered on a sliver of fruit. The flavour is also shot-through with a pleasant coffee flavour, followed by balanced apples and soft citrus fruit. This is a really great bottle of fizz - as ever - and well worth the price. If you like your champagne forward and full, with good complexity, Grande Année is always a safe bet. Might have to get some more!

(at Cru – NYC) Yumm. First time with this vintage and while it is not as rich as the ’90 or ’96, it has everything I love in a young Bollinger. Wonderful yeast and toast yet light on its feet (relatively) with bright acidity. This is delicious now but should develop nicely over the medium term. (18.5+)

As others have said, this shows a very fine bead (which is impressively persistent to boot). The nose shouts Bollinger: it's bready, marrowy, and minerally, with the fruit showing up only later on the palate. In the mouth, the mousse is smooth but there's a good bite of acidity, too. The only thing lacking is a monumental finish; it's crisp, minerally, and clean, but it's not noticeably long. Otherwise, though, this is an all-around beautiful effort for the vintage.

Surprisingly small, straight cork. Big wine. Very winey. Fine mouse. Just starting to develop nutty flavours. Would be an ideal food champagne. Seems to have taken on more weight and complexity since tasted last year. Certainly seems a good effort for the vintage and needs more time I think whilst being approachable now. Probably would have benefited from decanting. Last glass was certanly the best. Unmistakably Bollinger.

Pale yellow color with ultra fine beeds (5/5). Very generous on the nose with a sophisticated bouquet of tropical fruits, citrus, cream, caramel, coffee and butter (14/15). On the palate the wine is rich and creamy with flavors nuanced by the bouquet. The ultra fine beeds fills your mouth with ease and lays out a red carpet of creamy flavors, such as lemon oil, pineapple, toffee, cream and white chocolate (18/20). An overall excellent effort by Bbollinger that deserves to be placed among the top 20 of this vintage. (8/10) 95 pts

Last bottle. Surprisingly delicate but notably less vibrant than previous bottles. Subtle hints of citrus and pear but the flavors where quite muted, definitely past it peak.

Beautiful almost smokey nose but slightly clipped palate. Palate seemed to want a cooler temperature but the nose needed this to be a bit warmer. The bubbles are starting to soften. Not as unctuous as my last bottle in October 2009.

Kul med 1997 Bollinger, mogen, bröd, honung och lite sherrytoner. En bra mogen Bollinger GA. Så mycket mer utvecklad än 1996 GA.

A bad bottle I'm sure
